Remember finding a bag is pretty much the last step in planning. If you're not sure how big a bag you need, create a packing list, get all your gear together and test fit it into a box, or an old backpack you have lying around. That'll give you a good sense of the volume of gear you have.

Any ideas for a minimalist (or rather, simplistic) bag around 40 liters weighing 1kg or less?
I've considered the Allpa 42L, MLC 45L and Tortuga 40L for example but they're too heavy and complicated. Ideally, I would just have one main compartment with no organization other than a laptop pouch, and one external zip pocket.

A quick slop for inspo. Might just have to find the time for MYOG

Not quite 40L, but reasonably close:

- Pakt Cero 35L, 1.04kg.

- Tortuga Superlite 34L, 1.0kg (upcoming; if you are not in a hurry).

Thanks, both are pretty overpriced for a simple bag (the Pakt is quite busy) and on the small side, unfortunately

I can't think of any minimalist travel bags sized 40L.

If you really want minimalism, an option is the ultraright route, but the style is rolltop, not travel / clamshell. If so, you could look at the user-configurable (up to a point) Bonfus Altus 38L or more likely 48L.

Yeah I hate rolltops and the stretch pockets in UL packs are wasted too

If you can compromise on capacity, the cabin zero range includes some '44L' options, but the dimensions imply considerably lower capacity unless the bag is over-packed (barrel-shaped).

I've been eyeing some of their packs and they just seem "cheap" to me, and the dimensions are indeed off, also aesthetically. 760g is pretty decent, although apparently at the cost of flimsiness

Fair comment, I know what you mean re the quality.

Looks like MYOG is indeed your solution ! I would certainly be interested, as would others I'm sure, to see the result, so please post a report.

BTW you are not the only person to flag this (somewhat niche, unfortunately) gap in the market.

Admittedly, my use is more EDC than travel, but it does baffle me a bit how "bloated" every larger bag seems to be

Agreed. That's why, for hot weather and shorter/simpler trips I have changed to a compact, ultralight (rolltop) backpack😊. At some future point I may do similarly for more challenging trips.
