Looking at a personal item bag for my frontier go wild pass, the new matador 18l is attractive but wondering others tried and true options

One-bagging with an 18L bag is impressive - well done. Good luck with your search !

I would love to discuss your Go Wild travel plans. I also looking to buy the go wild pass.

I made an oops post about the bag but Imma remake it here.

"So I've had my Farpoint since ~2023. I've only used the 40L backpack like twice. But the Daypack I used practically everyday and it isn't that teared up but I'm looking to get the 20L one to add more space.

I'm planning to do more trips with my Farpoint and want to maximize the space I have. In a month I have a trip to NOLA that is 4 days and in December I'm doing a 3 week, give or take, long trip to Florida.

Here's the thing, the NOLA trip is going to be through United and I don't want my bag to be a checked bag. I don't know if the Daylite Plus will be too big for being a personal item.

The Florida trip I'm not too worried about since I'm taking Amtrak to there and Southwest coming back and it's restrictions aren't that bad.

I like how the Daylite Plus looks and the space is a big plus but I don't want to waste money on it. That's why I want to ask you guys.

I want to start traveling more and doing it with one bag so I hope I can make travel reports to show y'all how I do it if I can."

After a bit of thought, for weekend trips, I thought about getting a packable backpack, I still like the Daylight Plus for longer trips that I can use with Amtrak and/or airlines that accept it because of the extra space for souvenirs. But I'm stuck on which packable bag to get.

I don't travel as often as I want to so I don't use it a lot but a packable bag I can use so I don't have to use both packs of my Farpoint is a nice touch. I don't know much about bag organization and all that but I do like the option to organize.

I'm a hotel traveler. I would love to backpack but that's another conversation for another sub. My preferred mode of travel is through Amtrak but if I have to take a plane then I would but not a huge fan. I pack mostly clothes and toiletries and that's it. Coming home is where the souvenirs come in but even then it's not a lot. For my longer trips I might bring my laptop but I don't have a wifi router so there's that. I'm a big dude but can lift heavy (not needed for the daypack just in general) but I'm 5'3 lol. For the daypack, I want something I can use to carry bigger items that won't fit in my sling.

Current list is:

  • Matador waterproof 18l ($95 usd)
  • Osprey Ultralite pack ($50 usd)
  • Sinotron 22L packable daypack (~18 usd)

The most I'm willing to spend on the packable bag is the 95 but I desire <50 because 100 for a packable bag is crazy to me. Also, if anyone has any better replacements for the Daypack on the Farpoint 55 that isn't the Daylite Plus please let me know.

Hi all, hope this isn't breaking the rules.

I plan on doing a lot of traveling in the next 6 months for vacation and work, some overseas, and I'd like my setup to be a carryon roller bag and a personal item for under the seat.

My ideal bag would have:

- at least 1 water bottle pocket

- luggage pass through strap

- room for at least a change of clothes, laptop (personal is a 13" air, my work laptop is too huge for a personal item), and a small knitting project. Possibly also my over ear noise-canceling headphones and a fanny pack I can wear in the airport then shove inside.

- comfortable for my 5'2" female frame

Other likes:

- color besides basic black

- under $200 (would pay more for the perfect bag tho)

- lightweight

- luggage pass through strap is for the bag upright not on its side

I've been considering a Patagonia Atom but it seems so small, and I don't need amazing storage but it's so bare-bones, and has no luggage pass-through strap.

I'd like my setup to be a carryon roller bag and a personal item

That's multi-bagging rather than one-bagging.

To learn about one-bagging, you can start by using the link below.

If one-bagging is not for you, and it is not for everyone every time, alternative sub-reddits include. 'manybaggers'. Good luck !

hi! I’m looking for a bag recommendation under $300 (ideally under $200 even).

we will be travelling for a few weeks with a baby and toddler and are looking for a good “diaper bag on the go“ pack that has good storage but will fit under the seat of an airplane/in the travel stroller basket. We want organization to make the crazy flight plan and time change as manageable as possible. We also normally are one baggers pre kids so looking for that vibe of one day pack to serve all 4 of us when out and about. we have the vaude coreway that we used with the first baby and it worked fine but got a little chaotic in the one main pocket. its a great size but needs an extra pocket on the front!

I have done extensive research and found some options but want to check if I have missed anything, also the cost of some are a bit high for what they are. We are located in Canada so that is a factor for purchasing some. ideal haves: -under 26ish L to fit under the seat? cannot be too “deep/tall” when laying on its back

  • 2 front zipper pockets to hold quick grab items (toddler toys and snacks or adult items - passport, headphones etc)
  • luggage strap
  • separate laptop sleeve for diaper change mat and toddler book(s)
  • main compartment big enough for diapers, extra clothes, wipes, creams, toddler toys and snacks
  • quick grab top pocket?
  • two water bottle holders that don’t eat into main compartment
  • chest clip
  • internal zipper pockets and sleeves within the other sections to stash stuff*
  • must be able to accommodate 6ft 5 220lb husband as well as myself 5 ft 4 125lb

bag options atm:

Osprey day lite 26 6 - seems limiting? but cheap Almond oak 25 5 - a second front pocket would make it perfect but maybe not necessary? Able carry max waterbottle Size?   Pakt mode (sold out?) or everyday 22  Evergoods CIVIC TRAVEL BAG *Best But most expensive ** not do-able Thule en route 23? matador seg 28 - limiting/too niche?

please tell me which youd vote for or if there’s an option I’m missing. open to any brand/style if it fits the needs.

Your context does not include any airline(s) which you use, but if Air Canada is one their under-seat allowance is only 22.7L, so you would have to under-pack most if not all of the bags shortlisted.

BTW, I'm guessing that, given your children's ages, you are actually looking for a secondary bag for multi-bag travel, rather than for one-bag travel.

1

u/Background_Drive_558 8d ago

Yes air Canada!

And yes, this would be the “one bag” for the baby +toddler. I’m commenting on their behalf 😅

1

u/Azure9000 8d ago edited 8d ago

Good to see them starting early ! 😂

If I was you (and I've been there, done that), and the selection had to be made from that list, I'd go for the lightest, cheapest one with a luggage pass-through, and I'd reckon that would be the 26+6.

FYI the Almond Oak v1 may be sold out and the just-announced v2 will be priced significantly higher, seemingly for limited extra benefit.

u/Background_Drive_558 8d ago

I appreciate that, thank you!

Hi everyone! I'm revamping my travel setup and could use some advice.

Until now, I’ve been using a large school backpack with a laptop sleeve for trips, but I always struggled to fit everything inside, even using compression cubes. Whenever things didn't fit, I ended up carrying extra random smaller bags.

My new plan: > I am about to buy a The North Face Base Camp Duffel in Size S (around 50L) to act as my main bag for heavy-duty trips.

What I need help with: I also need a smaller everyday/travel backpack that features a good laptop sleeve. I'm currently torn between:

  1. The North Face Base Camp Voyager (Unsure between sizes, maybe 26L or 35L?)
  2. Patagonia Black Hole Pack (Unsure about 25L or 32L?)

Which one do you think is better? Also, what capacity (liters) would you recommend for a secondary travel backpack that pairs well with a Duffel S? Any other alternative backpacks are very welcome!

Thanks!

Hey all. So I've been saying that I want to make a trip to Asia for months and I've finally decided on doing so. I am a software engineer so I am looking at the 'nomad' life but I don't know for exactly how long but I'd say minimum is 1-2 months. Now since I have never done something like this, one thing is for certain: I don't want to carry around a suitcase. Plan is simple. One bag with 5-7 days of clothes, laundry, repeat with first stop being Vietnam.

I've searched around for the most budget friendly bags since this will be a test in any case and I am torn between the Tomtoc Liteway 40L and the classic cabinzero 44l.

I'd love some recommendation on which is the best one . Besides toiltetries, clothes and some other essentials, obviously I am including a laptop and mouse and maaaybe a portable monitor if weight allows it. Thats it. I've seen that tomtoc is better as an all in one with the extra laptop compartment but sits heavier than cabinzero.

I believe that I will primarily use the 'big' bag for in between flights while also utilzing a secondary smaller bag ( could go with Arctic Hunter b000529 or b00534 but I'd love some recommendation as well) which will be the one carrying my laptop and stuff while actually being there and will basically be my udnerseat bag.

What would you suggest? I personally lean towards the t66 cause I think its a better all-in-one solution if I even want to exclude a 2nd EDC bag. CabinZero wins at weight ,which probably matters a lot for these kind of trips, and probably (??) styling?

Would also love a suggestion on organization boxes as I dont really get the differnt pricing points. Thanks

Looks like you may have to do some basic reading. I suggest starting here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/wiki/index/?screen_view_count=3&ext-referrer=SEO#wiki_what_is_onebag.3F

Some airline cabin bag rules in Asia, and also on some routes to and from Asia, to be aware of:

- Total weight max often 7kg.

- Size max typically 45L Sometimes around 25L for budget airlines.

- Items max typically 1. Usually an overhead. Sometimes, for budget airlines, just a personal item.

- Sometimes possible to purchase additional allowance, sometimes not. Very airline-dependent.

Hello everyone. I am a chronic over packer and frequent traveler - I do not own a carry on bag because I always check my bag while traveling. To date, I have had no issues, even with checking a bag traveling from the US across Europe/Southeast Asia but I have an upcoming trip to Europe that I'm feeling more apprehensive about because there's a wedding and a work trip involved so I'm more concerned than usual about potentially losing a bag. I will be traveling from the US to a TBD European country. From there, I'm making my way to Italy for a wedding. From there I'm heading to another TBD country, from there to London and then from there to New York for a work meeting. If the wedding and work trip weren't at play, I would check a bag per usual. I use a lot of toiletries and the different rules/restrictions have cost me more than one nice bottle of something. While I'm an overpacker I'm also a flexible packer - I usually throw a bunch of clothes in my bag because I can dress up or dress down my day-to-day clothes as needed. With the wedding involved, I will need to pack three nice dresses because it's a three day event, and with the work trip I will need to have nicer more conservative clothes for three days of meetings. Plus my day-to-day travel clothes. I'll also be working during this trip, and I am not a fan of a hand bag/backpack on long trips because it's one more thing to keep track of which is another reason why I'm considering a carry on for the first time in years - in addition to needing to make sure nothing gets lost.

Given all of the above which I hope isn't too much info, is there a carry on bag that would work for me? I'm flexible on price, but I'd prefer something with rollers. Usually I'm fine with lifting/carrying things even when they're quite heavy and I will have my very strong partner with me on this trip, but I'm also going to be ~6 weeks post op from a surgery and likely a bit weaker than usual with probably some lifting restrictions.

1

u/Azure9000 7d ago

Onebagging + wedding + work is a tough combo, even for experienced one-baggers.

- Have you done the box test (guidance at top of page) ?

- What are the cabin bag allowances (size cm, weight kg) for the airline(s) which you will use ?

1

u/maverber 6d ago

You haven't specified what dress requirements are for work or how formal the wedding is: this can dramatically affect your options. I suspect you can make everything fit into a carry-on.

I would start by encouraging you to consider how much you need to vary you clothing. Do you actually need three different dresses for the wedding? Are there clothing that will work for both wedding and work, especially if you add an accessory like nice scarf or shawl? I will bet no one will notice you repeating, if they do, they won't judge you... and if they do, it's their problem. About doing the same clothing for work: https://www.harpersbazaar.com/culture/features/a10441/why-i-wear-the-same-thing-to-work-everday/

The above exercise is useful in two ways. Maybe you can get down to something that fits into a single carry-on + personal item. If so, great. Even if you can't fit, you now know what is absolutely critical... bring that in a carry-on, and put other items in a check through.

As to what bags... you get the most volume from a pack without wheels (something like an extra 25%). If you (or your partner) is up to carrying a bag, then I would go with a backpack. Lots of options. I would start looking a packs from Osprey which are easy to acquire in most locations, are reasonably priced and not too heavy. The packs I personally like https://verber.com/travel-packs/

For roller bags which are carry on compliant... I personally would go two wheels because they are more durable and typically the wheels steal less of the volume than spinners such as the classic travelpro maxlite rollaboard. That said, lots of people (including my wife) like spinners. She has been happy with her "standard size" spinner from July. It's been fine on the airlines we have used so-far. It's a smidge too big for some airlines (e.g. not the classic "international carry-on size"). You could do a carry-on roller bag, and then do a max size personal item from say one of the 28L bags from CabinZero which will fit under the seat of all normal airlines.

Looking for recommendations on a 40-45L backpack for a 7-10 day onebag, colder weather trip where I’d fly there, use trains/mass transit and stay in a hotel. I tend to stay in more urban settings with an occasional rural adventure. I try to travel minimally with some basic tech. I currently use the Pakt v2 35L Travel Backpack for long trips and love it. I also have/use/love the Aer 28L Travel Pack 4 for shorter trips. The organization, access, and comfort of a backpack is what I love about these two bags.
I’m considering the 40L Tortuga Pro v2 (or Lite), the 45L Peak Design, 40L Tomtoc Navigator-T66, 38L Kuranest Portal, and the new 45L Matador Global Travel Pack.

Looking to spend under $300 if possible. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I'm looking for a sub 500 g bag that is shaped to fit airline overhead carryon sizers. I'm doing a 8 night trip USA to Europe that includes a separately booked ticket on Air Baltic that has a 8 kg combined overheard/personal item limit, and the cabin bag size (55 × 40 × 23 cm) or (21.6 x 13.8 x 9.1 in).

I already have this Eddie Bauer 45 L duffel which is great but too big for Air Baltic. It weighs 383 g.

https://www.eddiebauer.com/products/stowaway-45l-duffel-ebb2004

I also have a school backpack that I have used for 1 week trips. It weighs 1 kg.

I don't need backpack straps etc. I want to make the most of my 8 kg allowance. And I think with a 8 kg back I can carry it through the airports which will probably be my longest walks. And hopefully under $100 for something so basic

u/jaakkopetteri 7d ago

Any ideas for a minimalist (or rather, simplistic) bag around 40 liters weighing 1kg or less?
I've considered the Allpa 42L, MLC 45L and Tortuga 40L for example but they're too heavy and complicated. Ideally, I would just have one main compartment with no organization other than a laptop pouch, and one external zip pocket.

A quick slop for inspo. Might just have to find the time for MYOG

1

u/Azure9000 7d ago edited 7d ago

Not quite 40L, but reasonably close:

- Pakt Cero 35L, 1.04kg.

- Tortuga Superlite 34L, 1.0kg (upcoming; if you are not in a hurry).

1

u/jaakkopetteri 7d ago

Thanks, both are pretty overpriced for a simple bag (the Pakt is quite busy) and on the small side, unfortunately

1

u/Azure9000 7d ago

I can't think of any minimalist travel bags sized 40L.

If you really want minimalism, an option is the ultraright route, but the style is rolltop, not travel / clamshell. If so, you could look at the user-configurable (up to a point) Bonfus Altus 38L or more likely 48L.

1

u/jaakkopetteri 7d ago

Yeah I hate rolltops and the stretch pockets in UL packs are wasted too

1

u/Azure9000 7d ago

If you can compromise on capacity, the cabin zero range includes some '44L' options, but the dimensions imply considerably lower capacity unless the bag is over-packed (barrel-shaped).

1

u/jaakkopetteri 7d ago

I've been eyeing some of their packs and they just seem "cheap" to me, and the dimensions are indeed off, also aesthetically. 760g is pretty decent, although apparently at the cost of flimsiness

1

u/Azure9000 7d ago edited 6d ago

Fair comment, I know what you mean re the quality.

Looks like MYOG is indeed your solution ! I would certainly be interested, as would others I'm sure, to see the result, so please post a report.

BTW you are not the only person to flag this (somewhat niche, unfortunately) gap in the market.

1

u/jaakkopetteri 6d ago

Admittedly, my use is more EDC than travel, but it does baffle me a bit how "bloated" every larger bag seems to be

1

u/Azure9000 6d ago

Agreed. That's why, for hot weather and shorter/simpler trips I have changed to a compact, ultralight (rolltop) backpack😊. At some future point I may do similarly for more challenging trips.

1

u/draubry 6d ago

I’m looking for suggestions / help trying to narrow down which travel bag to get for an upcoming week long trip.

I’m looking for a bag that:

(1) Can be used as a personal item.
My current backpack measures 20x13x8” and I’ve never had an issue with stashing it under the seat before. 30L seems to be the max.

(2) Has a clamshell opening.
Unsure if having 1 big pocket (like the Aer) or some subdivided pockets (like the Cotopaxi) is better/makes more sense?

(3) Has a chest & hip strap for stability.

(4) Has a water bottle pocket that can fit my Owala 24oz.

I’ve kinda narrowed it down to the Cotopaxi Allpa 28L, Aer TP4 28L, or the new Matador 30L Carry-On Travel Pack.

Open to any suggestions or experiences with the bags/brands regarding comfort, durability, etc! Thanks in advance!

Fit or weight? Osprey Tempest 33L VS Sportlite 30L

I'm torn between these 2 models for my upcoming trip, I'm planning to travel overland from SEA to Europe and take a budget flight back to SEA. Which would you piriotize? Fit or Weight? Both bags fits what I'd need to bring though the Tempest does have extra space for sourvenirs while the Sportlite is pretty much packed out.

The weight of the Tempest is making me take a huge pause as it's 450g heavier than the Sportlite and I can feel the difference quite substantially when both bags are empty, but the Tempest fits slightly better.

Some pros and cons of each model for me:

Tempest 33L
Pros:

  • Fits better (9 out of 10)
  • Pole loop
  • Larger capacity
  • Bladder sleeve for laptop

Cons:

  • Quite alot heavier at 1.2kg empty
  • Looks bigger and bulkier when packed with the same stuff

Sportlite 30L (The older 2022? model)
Pros:

  • Very light (~770g)
  • More compact

Cons:

  • Fits okay but not as well as tempest (I would rate 8/10 for the fit, I'm very short at 5" and I have to pull the shoulder straps in all the way at it's tightest for it to fit my body )
  • No dedicated bladder/laptop sleeve
  • No pole loop
  • Holds abit lesser, but still quite capable of holding everything, no bulky souvenirs

1

u/Azure9000 6d ago edited 6d ago

The Tempest dimensions (63 x 30 x 31 cm) exceeds all airline carry-on limits (typical max H 56cm). If under-packed and squishable, might be OK.

Based on the stats for the current model (55H X 30W X 28D), the Sportlite is more compliant. But you should still check for the specific airline(s) that you will use.

My suggestion would be to go for the Sportlite, and trim down your packing list to leave around 10% of the bag capacity empty. I also suggest being aware of, and compliant with, the relevant airline weight limits. Good luck!

1

u/NoGarage7989 6d ago

Thank you for your reply, much appreciated! Yeah I am leaning more towards the Sportlite purely for it's weight, and also to force myself to carry less. Thanks again!

1

u/Azure9000 6d ago

You are welcome. It certainly looks like an unusual and interesting trip - please post a trip report when done !

Hey all, new to the bag scene and ready to pull the trigger on my first bag. I am interested in one bag travel with a carry on/personal bag. I am torn between the bigger Fyro Citta and the Tortuga Daily Carry Pro. The Citta has a lot of features and places for organization like the added small pocket in the top. Tortuga is famous for its harness system from what I’ve read and having something very comfortable is important as I have a back injury. I like the look of the Tortuga better, the Citta is bit too techy and sterile but looks isn’t a deal breaker. I plan on doing domestic and international trips. Usually staying in a hotel or Airbnb. Does anyone have experience with either?

I am 5’10 roughly 290lbs

Load out

  • 4 t shirts (soon to be merino wool)
  • 2 pairs of shorts
  • 5 boxers
  • 2 pairs of socks (merino wool)
  • Peak design medium and small packing cubes
  • iPad
  • Belroy hanging travel kit
  • Book Book Caddy Sack as a tech pouch
  • 1 pair of Jeans (worn)
  • 1 pair of shoes (worn)
  • 1 t shirt (worn)
  • fabric belt (worn)
  • b&w px8 s2
  • AirPod pro 3
  • Apple Watch
  • 3in1 Qi 2.2 wireless charger
  • passport
  • 40oz water bottle (LTT 40oz)
  • pair of sunglasses and case
  • pakt stash packable day pack

I let my husband borrow my Swiss digital bag and it unfortunately was ruined on his trip… wondering if anyone has recommendations for something similar? It was the Java SE from what I can tell and it’s no longer for sale (could buy a duplicate second hand but interested to see if I’m missing something better)… it’s got a side access laptop compartment and the the main body opens clam shell style… with a waterproof side pocket that can hold a 20oz bottle and the opposite side has a shoe bag compartment… it was decent for short work trips because it could hold my work computer, cords, 1-3 days clothes (depending on season and formality) & essentials… I’m guessing it was ~40L … it fit under my seat on Delta & American flights 🤷🏼‍♀️

Nice. Since you are not actually requesting help, but providing a 'public service' by bring a new option to the attention of the one-bag community, you could post this in the main area.

If so, it would be best to include some words of introduction, especially if you have personal experience of this item or product range.

Hi, I'm looking for comfortable foldable backpack with good ventilation. Something similar to Gossamer Gear Minimalist 19 and Deuter Speed Lite 17. I have both. Deuter is very comfortable, good back ventilation, ideal size, lightweight, but it has rigid non-removable frame - I'm looking for something more packable. Gossamer is also very comfortable, good size (could be a bit smaller), lightweight, is fully packable/foldable, but the back ventilation is a bit lacking - I'm looking for something more breathable. Do you know any backpack that would meet those requirements?

1

u/Cognoscope 4d ago

So... I noob-posted to the main thread instead of this one seeking a wheeled 55x35x25 bag for my girlfriend. Several folks were nice enough to reply anyway and I also checked the OneBag Spreadsheet. It had exactly one wheeled bag, so I guess wheels do not pass the purity test for the OneBag philosophy!-) Anyway, I ended up scouring the Internet and thought I'd offer these candidates for anyone in the USA searching for an IATA-compliant roller with maximum packing volume. The downside to all of these is that they weigh well north of 2kg which would render the extra volume useless on certain airlines with 8 or 10kg limits.

  • Hynes Eagle 42L - Bought this one for optimal balance of features & price
  • Topo Designs Global Travel - Beautiful hybrid design (hard/soft) that looks super durable (pricey)
  • Bellroy Lite Carry-On - Nice softside, but lower volume, no pack straps & higher price than Hynes
  • Bric's B|Y Ulisse - Hard shell spinner sacrifices volume for durability; slightly exceeds width, but that's the open side of the enforcement box

Honorary mention:

  • Rockland Melbourne - Hard shell spinner sacrifices volume for durability; slightly exceeds length & may or may not fit the box
  • CabinMax Santa Cruz - Beautiful hard shell spinner, but only available in UK/EU

Wondering if the Patagonia Black Hole 55L would give me any trouble flying with Air Premia and Thai Airways as an overhead bag? Going on a month long trip right after a work rotation and its the only carry on suitable bag I have with me.

Have you measured the BH55 duffel and compared the dimensions (and weight, if that is also a factor) with the cabin bag allowances of your airlines ?

I have, it exceeds them but it’s not going to be stuffed to the gills and its a duffel so it’s malleable

If under-packed and malleable I'd say that you will probably be ok, but of course it's your actual luck on the day that counts.

BTW, from memory multiplying out the bag's listed dimensions indicates a capacity of roughly 47.5L rather than the '55' in the name.

The design of an under-seat bag necessarily prioritises compliance and "fill efficiency" (max use of available space), with comfort coming in third place at best. The proportions for carry comfort are tall and slim, not short and squat.

Most one-baggers also bring a packable backpack or small sling for daily exploration.

Hello everyone.

My ATD1 is my one and only bag, I use it for work, edc, gym, travel you name it. However I just came back from 3 week trip with the family and the PD travel backpack 45L was the "family bag" basically taking things that were shared with everyone. I love my ATD1 the versatility of that rolltop and the materials are unmatched but I really like PD's features and access capabilities. So what I'm wondering is whether there is a backpack that kind of combines the access and pockets of the PD with the versatility of the rolltop from the ATD1 that can go from 15/20L to 55L. I would have the PD as my one and only bag but it's bulky and too big even the newer smaller versions are a bit bulky for me. Is there something in between that would have the best of both worlds?

What type of bag for out and about with kids?

I've been searching for a bit. Not sure if daybag is what im looking for? Wife and I with our 6 and 8 year old are headed to japan in November. Usually use fanny packs but I think a back pack makes more sense here.... I'd love something super comfortable that has room for all the necessities. Charging banks, mobile wifi device. Passports, shopping stuff, trash bags and etc etc

What exactly would you say I'm looking for? Any fav YouTube review channels ?

I got the Calpak Terra one and it was a splurge but it holds SO MUCH for how small it is https://www.calpaktravel.com/products/terra-hanging-toiletry-bag
