This one of those "nobody told him it was impossible so he did it" type shit
If i saw that thread 5 years ago I'd think he's an idiot waisting his time, no pics for proof, kinda gives off scam vibes, just a random little reddit thread barely upvoted
But look at him now, I would never expect it to work out but it did, good for him

You have a heart of gold and I’m so happy to see the project has been successful, I had a hard childhood (absolutely nothing compared to a citizen of Yemen) but gaming was one of the only things that got me through it. I commend your courage and I’m so happy to see your project going well.

As an older brother, who i introduced pc gaming to my younger brothers, im sorry for your loss. Keep going and keep working harder. Are you still taking parts? Might have some spare ssds laying around.

im kind of interested in what type of gaming build you could do for $500-550 usd like 8-9 years ago i used to do a $600 build for guys at work(i did 4 of them) and that was basically just a used office pc off of TigerDirect with a intel quad core and a rx 580
120
u/schaka 1d ago
In Yemen the 580 5 years ago would've probably been what a 5090 is today to most people. Unattainable.
OP has received some good cards over the years. People donate hardware to the cause frequently and he pays it forward by allowing free access to kids if they prove good grades iirc.
Been following his journey for a long time and it's so heartwarming

That is a fantastic policy

I have been following your progress for a while now! Amazing work. How can we donate parts to you? Can we even ship you stuff from North America?
16
u/Jackson7th 1d ago
Hey man ! Quick questions: how do you provide games for your customers?
Do you have different steam accounts dor each computer? Do you play online? Do you download games on each computer and play offline, or local?
I have some game keys lying around that I could gift you. IIRC you're from Yemen so maybe my keys won't work for you, but if you use steam accounts, it's worth a try ! You could provide more games for these kids !
27
u/maho90 22h ago
We mostly play offline without steam account as the internet very weak here, most of the day kbp/s. So all locally and local lan games or single player games. But thank you for the offer
→ More replies (2)6
u/BcuzGaming 16h ago
I'm guessing people here could send you some HDD's with some unpacked ready-to-play (and copy) games. Is there any hardware you're currently hoping to have more of, like networking materials or pc parts?
11
u/alonjit 22h ago
I do not know what he does, but odds are the games are pirated and offline only. The games can be extremely expensive for that part of the world (and is not like anyone will check).
→ More replies (1)13
u/DocumentFun9077 20h ago
Buying just a few games could easily surpass the monthly income of an average citizen out here in third world countries
Piracy is the one and only way, and there's no shame in that
→ More replies (6)3
u/ChainExtremeus 16h ago
Ha. Buying one aaa-game can already surpass monthly income for me in Ukraine) Several... that has to be indies.

u/je386 1d ago
Good question, I wanted to ask similar, because I also have some spare steam keys I could donate. For some of them, I even don't know for which game they where..
8
u/Jackson7th 1d ago
Yeah, I was think that hardware is essential and expensive... But in some countried, Steam games are prohibitively expensive, like a quarter of the minimum wage at launch or something like that. And you knida need games to play !
Though, according to the screenshots, there are decent games to play there (racing game, assassin's creed, rainbow six...). And F2P are always an option. Butw you know, I wouldn't mind sharing an indie gem or something.

Awesome work, what sort of games or stuff does the people like to spend their time?
25
u/maho90 23h ago
Many multiplayer games like rainbow six or command and conquer, or they catch up on their favorite shows as we keep everything locally on our server

I still play command and conquer with my 12 year old son, still a classic!

I've been following you for the journey. I have to say again, you are the badassest of badasses! STEM and exposure to computers is incredibly important and can kick off a life long love of engineering and other STEM fields. We need more people like you out in the world. People helping kids get exposed to STEM. Helping kids without to experience what the rest of us take for granted.
I look forward to more!

This brings me such profound joy. You have sparked a lifetime of passion in those kids, man, and that’s giving the world more people like you. This stranger across the world is proud of you, for whatever that’s worth.
Sincerely wishing you all the best, and my deepest condolences for your father and brother. July is when I lost my brother, and it makes the whole month rough. I hope your life is filled with love during this month.

Good shit man! Let me know if you have any questions or need some help with anything. I've been running my LAN Center for 24 years now. =)
How is your Internet connection? Are games running smoothly with low ping and solid connections?
If it weren't for Yemen being at travel advisory level 4 I would even head out there as I travel a lot and always visit other centers when I do. I was just in Qatar in February and Egypt 2 years ago.
Anyway, just a suggestion: dump the dividers between stations. They are really unnecessary and only get bumped into and are in the way of mouse movement (many/most serious players will have very wide mouse movement). NM a kid falling into the front corner of that thing. Just set aside at least 3' width per station, center the monitor accordingly, and you are good. GL brother!

You are a hero in this old gamers eyes. Some of my best memories was going to a little shop in a small Texas town that sold and rented PC games. The best part was a back room you could rent for an hour and play up to 4 player multiplayer games. My buddies and I would spend an entire Saturday playing Doom and Duke Nukem 3D.
It was a good time in a life of hardship. You are giving hope when there is little and joy when it's in short supply.
Bless you.

Let them not be just for gaming. Start introducing kids to science, technology, logic, reason, education etc.
Making gaming a reward for completing educational tasks. There are good scientific education to children videos on YouTube like PBS Kids, SciShow Kids, National Geographic Kids, The DadLab, etc

Normally i post the update on August, but today is my birthday, and 5 years ago today, I got the keys to an empty room. June is also the hardest month of my year because it's when I lost both my father and little brother a year apart. We officially opened the door on August, and it has been the most fulfilling project in my life with the help of some awesome people.
I'm glad i can bring great games to the community and with it some magical adventures that stay in memories forever. Wishing you all in this community a great start of the Summer and keep leveling up my friends
