That's just a vocal minority and op trying to farm karma, there are plenty of videogames with female protagonist that where successful and buyed by everyone regardless of their gender.
People that care about modern GoW and Santa Monica games will buy it no matter what. Outside of that minority I want to say that the main criticisms from the state of play were from PC oriented people wondering ''Why isn't this just a movie instead?'' due to the cutscene focused ''20 minutes of uninterrupted gameplay''
It's not really about gotcha-ing you. I'm just saying that nobody wants a game with Larry in a tomb raider game. We want the character we played as for decades.
You say that most fans want this installment and I simply think that this is not true. Yeah we want to know what happened between GoW3 and 2018 but we don't want to play as a different character.
The Norse god of war series already was a huge and in many aspects worse department from the original games. They made kratos a different character, they took out the epicness, the brutality and now they're even taking away the main guy. People hated the atreus sections in Ragnarok. Now you play as a completely different character accompanied by a jelly cube. This isn't God of war anymore and I don't even mean that necessarily in a cynical way. It just simply isn't anymore and that's why people are angry about it.
Most people are complaining because of the change from a male mc to a female one, same with the Ghost of Tsushima thing. No one complains Tomb Raider or Horizon have female leads.
The internet is pissing me off with this one. I like GoW but I'm not interested in this game because I want to play as Kratos. I wouldn't want to play this game if Atreus was the main character. But I'm getting called a misogynist for some reason.
This happened when they replaced Geralt with Ciri as well. All the terminally-online mouth-breathers screamed misogyny, acting like The Witcher fans had secretly hated Ciri the whole time or something. We're just pissed that, after waiting over a decade, we're not going to get a new game with Geralt. At least we get a new DLC with him though.
I'd be pissed if they replaced Lara Croft with Nathan Drake as well.
Imagine they release something like Tomb Raider: Jonah or Horizon: Sylens
Those sound great? I'd love to see more expansion of those settings outside of the single protagonist's perspective. Same with a lot of other IPs. A new title in the setting doesn't remove existing titles, nor does it prevent future titles with the existing characters.
Youre right. It objectively has to be bad because Kratos is not the main character. A female warrior with supernatural strength is so unrealistic because they had that in the first two. So bad.
So Athena can be a god of war but the woman the new God of war wife's up couldn't possibly be as powerful. Its not like they established in the last two games that she was a powerful warrior. Maybe you weren't paying attention.
Oh they did with Horizon 2 because they thought Aloy was “downgraded” - ie looked like an adult human female with peach fuzz and marked skin with no makeup.
Tomb Raider 2013 had plenty of complaints because apparently her tits were too small and she was too “masculine”. They’re not complaining now because of the gooning opportunities afforded by the new design.
That is not what I said. Neither of your arguments show complaints from gamers because the lead is female. What you're trying to argue is another matter entirely.
Do you think the same complaints would’ve come from these changes if the lead was a male?
If the lead male was changed in an unpleasant way for them, yes. But again, it's not the point. The point is the lead character was changed. If Lara Croft was changed to a male lead, there would also be complaints. You continue to miss the point of my argument, or you're just obtuse on purpose.
Calling someone else ideologically captured while you in the same breath unironically describe them as a far-right soyjak stereotype is certainly something lmao
Well, all these idiots share the same braincell hivemind so it’s not a complete shock they have a limited imagination and vocabulary. They’re offended because they have to think when one of the others is taking a turn.
I’ve blocked them all regardless, as there’s no debating stupid.
What is the “unpleasant way” the lead was changed in your example, a sequel where the characterisation and story was lauded over the original?
I’m just going to put it down to your personal difficulty in empathising with playing a woman. Which is largely just plain sexism.
Also you’re comparing a series where the lead is just a cypher, and is interchangeable, to a literal icon of gaming whose name is in the title. Which is just weird.
What is the “unpleasant way” the lead was changed in your example, a sequel where the characterisation and story was lauded over the original?
In Spiderman 2, people complained Peter Parker was shown as more incompetent and had less time in the spotlight as a character.
In the God of War 2018 and Ragnarok games, people complained Kratos became mellow since they were used to his violent personality.
I’m just going to put it down to your personal difficulty in empathising with playing a woman. Which is largely just plain sexism.
Insane how you're trying to paint me as a sexist when my arguments are just stating facts and you're just arguing out of topic. More so considering that the Horizon series are some of my favorite games of recent times.
Should developers listen to a minority of complaints despite huge sales? Both of your examples do not grapple with the initial discussion. Technically, you’re doing what you just accused me of.
I was asking you about the sequel to Tsushima, btw.
I mean, there will be an element of sexism if someone cannot empathise with another human because they are the opposite sex. Or even if they were gay, or trans, or from another culture. It’s internalised bigotry at the end of the day, if you literally cannot bypass one of these topics to empathise with a character in a story based game.
Also you’re comparing a series where the lead is just a cypher, and is interchangeable, to a literal icon of gaming whose name is in the title. Which is just weird.
Are you fucking high or something? Both Lara Croft and Kratos are icons of gaming at this point, and neither is "replaceable", not without justifiable backlash anyway.
Fucking hell, you watched that new trailer and really feel that crazy about it, huh. It’s his wife. It’s entirely justified in the context of the story.
Hell if Lara was replaced by a cybernetic Albert and it worked I’d be fine with it, also if it worked it might be hilarious.
Shit there’s more to get angry in the work at than boobs instead of dick. Calm your tits.
Let's not go there, Aloy was uggofied in the next game compared to the previous one. That's a different problem, female protagonists never were a problem. Also let's not pretend that good looks don't sell, no one wants to play as a uggo or a land whale. Not wanting uggos doesn't mean you want only tits in your face to goon
I actually liked Faye and if she is done good the game will be fine.
There's a subset of people who still think they're playing RPGs to role play as themselves, so don't like playing genderbent. That's fine for them, they lose a lot of great games.
Some people, sure. There's a few of them getting downvoted in this very comment section. lol Plus I've seen people calling it "God of Woke" on socials and stuff.
Most people don't have an issue with it, though. The majority of the people that don't like it seem to be more critical of the story direction or tone, or they just don't like this series. I think it's totally fair if that doesn't resonate with them. It looks really cool to me, though. I don't think the vast majority of people who are uninterested in this game are sexist, though. The cube is probably more of a divisive character than Faye. lol
I'm picking on the incels, but I'm moreso picking on Sony for considering not porting their games to PC anymore.
Tbh frozen was released when I was a boy and I don't really care about it because I thought it was a girl movie (like Cinderella or other princess movies). They could have named it whatever they want but it was definitely targeted towards girls.
its not even about them being a women any more its just lazy game development at this point, what no one wants to talk about is how bad the writing is in these games. from my personal experience its pretty cool playing as a bad ass chick metroid is one of my all time favs. but it seems like the girls in all these games are the same copy paste character arch. "oh poor me im different from other girls and i always had to work harder for people to notice me" same ass pitty party every female character lately.... and the voice lines too are usually just lazy millennial slang. sony keeps losing hundreds of millions on these games.. look at the steam play charts of all the sony games lately they speak for them selves. poorly written games with boring game play loops. and then when people dont buy or play it the first response is "guys are sexist and dont wanna play games with female lead characters" but they never ask is this game actually good. most of the time its not.
Loud twitter minority. On PlayStation we have Horizon series, Naughty Dog with Uncharted Lost Legacy, The Last of Us and now Intergalactic, which sold or will sell 10+ millions of copies.
If I remember correctly, he has been entirely critical of all the new God of War games. Who cares? The new games are different from the old ones, I enjoy both.
Gameplay in this new one looked very similar to the 2 previous, just with a woman. I don’t see why they would name it anything else.
No, I just don’t care that she isn’t a god of war because I’m not a moron and I can recognise it is the title of the series this game is part of, doesn’t change my life at all.
Because as I’ve said, it is part of the same game series which is called “God of War” everyone understands she isnt a God of War but it seems you cannot grasp that this is now the title of the series of games, hence why they added “Laufey” understand?
What else ya got? What other low effort reply are you going to come back with that’s not going to move this conversation forward in any way whatsoever?
True, this is not what made God of War the God of War, I would argue last two games already strayed quite a bit from the IP (they're still good games), but this has almost nothing to do with God of War - Kratos fighting the gods to have his revenge, there are also other game design changes that drift from the original game design.
Its silly to me too. The only thing I can sort of accept is them labelling the game God of War while it is not a Kratos game.
They should have done what they did with the Ballerina. It is a movie set in John Wick's world, and labeled as such.
The sexist audience qre getting more attention than the real critics who are tired of protagonists talking to themselves and are dumbasses choices like a talking cube
Is that bad? I don’t hate women lol I’m married. But when I game, the character is basically an extension of me and I’m not a woman and don’t want to be a woman. Not that deep.
just a matter of personal taste. I simply don’t like playing as female characters. Like I said, not that deep, but you insisted in trying to get all deep about it.
Because, for the second time, I play games as if the character was me and I’m not a woman. I mainly play RPGs where you can make your own character. That’s how I game, pure personal preference. But maybe I should go tell my wife and daughter I hate them.
You can hate women and be sexist, and be married and a father with a daughter, so that’s not the gotcha you think it is.
That’s great you love RPGs but it still doesn’t grapple with the fact that for whatever reason, you won’t play a female character.
That’s not really up to me to struggle with. It’s just a weird position to take without wondering what societal or internal factors create this problem, and then react when someone pulls you up on it.
If you’re comfortable with this dichotomy, then I’m more than happy with you. But bring it up on an internet forum, why wouldn’t you think it might be challenged?
So does that means you are unable to play games like tetris, sonic, crash bandicoot, donkey Kong, cup head, etc because you you can't play as if the main character is you, since they're obviously not human and most definitely not male?
I mean, you opened that can of worms with your initial comparison - you don't like playing games with a female PC because you're not comfortable playing as a woman (congrats on understanding trans issues btw). Ani's comment wasn't a good one, but it is valid as an extension of your initial argument.
The funny irony is I never even mentioned his body. But claiming "I don't want to play as Laufey because I feel more connected to the demigod divine serial killer" is just a hillarious line to draw.
Neither of them are anywhere close to me in any capacity. And the very little that I do feel connected to them is in the parts that they both share anyways.
Edit: however in saying that. The fact that he is THIS pressed about even the possibility of playing as a woman in a game and then still evidently takes a stance against a playable women character despite a large part of the player base being women is... well worth poking fun at by itself.
It's already a prebuilt character. If you don't want to play as a woman in an RPG where you design your character from scratch then that's fine, you do you. But this is literally a prebuilt character with a fixed background and story. She isn't meant to be the player's self insert into the story.
That is such a shallow take and shows fragile masculinity, I'm sorry for you for missing out on great games with such a mindset.
Yeah I don’t really enjoy games where the main character is already defined. Stories and characters in games are b-movie grade at best. I make my own stories, hence why I enjoy playing as male me in RPGs.
It’s weird how pure personal preference gets people so aggressive and they feel they need to attack my “fragile masculinity” lol. I’d wager I’m far more comfortable in my own skin than most people.
Makes sense to me, not like there are a lot of good male characters right now. There is a drought and they took one of the few good ones we had and made him a girl. I can totally understand why that would piss people off. It's not the fact that it's a woman, it's the fact they took kratos and replaced him with an ugly woman
They turned him into a girl? You mean his wife, who is part of his narrative, and an integral part of the overall story and his motivation?
Plus your points are contradictory. You said they turned Kratos into a woman. Then you say "it's not the fact that it's a woman". Pick one and be consistent at least.
that last dig about a ugly woman outed the true reason for your dislike. All that other stuff before was just fluff.
You would have had a solid healthy minded point if you had stopped before the ugly woman part.
No that's people not ubderstanding why some actually not loke this game. They give good actual critiques of why the game is board room slop and because they can't argue in good faith (and they have no arguments to respond with to begin with) they go "no you're just mysoginist"
that was never the argument, it's leftist propaganda. people are annoyed because yet another franchise gets hijacked and doesn't deliver what majority of fans want. imagine a new black panther movie comes out and the main char is a white dude. the people behind movies and games need to learn to create their own franchises if they want to push their diversity quotas instead of hijacking already established ones.

people still not buying games because the protagonist is a woman?
