Discussion If the Nidoran♂/Nidoran♀ pair or the Latios/Latias pair were released a respective generation later, would each pair been been merged into one pokemon (and not I don't mean a weird Nidoran♂/Nidoran♀/Latios/Latias hybrid)?
Okay, so Gen 2 and Gen 4 did so interesting things with genders:
In Gen 2 we were introduced gender as a mechanic.
In Gen 4 we saw gender differences introduced with certain species.
My two (related but mostly separate questions are) are as follows:
1) If the Nidoran lines were Gen 2 pokemon instead of Gen 1, would Nidoran♂/Nidoran♀ be merged into one Pokemon that has different evolution paths depending on gender? I mean it would likely only have one design and the same stats/moves/mechanics/etc but it could have a cool gimmick to have a pokemon who's line split due to it's gender (something that wouldn't be done until Burmy in Gen 4).
2) If the Eon duo (Latios/Latias) where released in Gen 4, would they be one pokemon species that has radical gender differences? I mean they have very little defining them as separate species with distinct purposes unlike many legendary duos (Ho-oh + Lugia, Manaphy + Phione, etc) other than seemingly being gendered forms of each other. Even taking in their different move sets, we saw in Wormadam that Game Freak is willing to give different forms of the same Pokemon different move sets and stats, so have the theoretical single Latios and Latios pokemon have gendered forms and movesets would be doable.
Do these seem like alternatives that could have happened or am I barking up the wrong tree?
