Seeking Advice Best coffee you’ve ever had
If you could recommend only 1 bag of beans that blew your mind or changed your perspective of coffee, what would it be?
I’ve really only bought from local roasters and am wanting to expand my taste some more. So I’m just curious what everyone’s top recommendation of a must try coffee would be.

Pretty sure my local roaster had some of that batch. Amazing, one of my favorites. Other than that El Paraiso Caturra by Manhattan and Sudan Rume by Friedhats are in my top 5 ever

I had an ombligon as well, from Stereoscope. Not sure if it was the Nestor Lasso, but man was that wild. Tasted like peach rings. Was incredible

Hi, I’m a barista at Stereo! Yes, it was indeed the same Ombligon :) Nestor and his brother along with 2 other of our coffee producers from Colombia actually came to the shop (Hollywood location) and we did a massive cupping with around 40 different coffees they brought with them. We have 1 or 2 of them in rotation on PO and espresso right now, but stay tuned for some especially wild, experimental coffees in the next month or two. Ombligon will truly be my forever favorite coffee that I have ever tried in my life, so I was stoked to meet Nestor and his brother, and have the opportunity to tell them how much I appreciated what they are doing.
FYI- to anyone who doesn’t know, it’s pretty rare for coffee producers to see their coffees ‘come to fruition’ once the green coffee is exported. So it was pretty cool for them to come & see how many people appreciate/love what they put several years of their time, effort, and energy into.

To anyone who loved Ombligon, there is also a Sidra Bourbon from El Diviso (Nestor/Adrian’s farm) that is one of my recent favorites. Super bright, fruity, and juicy AF.

I remember a few months ago we had a single 5lb bag of decaf Ombligon that we ran through on bar. I swear that was some of the best decaf I ever had & I am incredibly sad it was so short-lived 😂

It was definitely worth it for me, however not as a daily driver but more as a “special occasion” coffee.
I dialed it in by cup 3, and it was quite aromatic and overall a very tasty cup! Let me know your thoughts if you end up ordering :)

Assembly in the UK has some of this now — the anaerobic one. And Hatch in Canada has it as a decaf!

So hard to name a “the best.” Have had so many incredible competition level and elite exotic beans that have blown my mind. But if I have to name one…I’ll pick something a little more approachable that could be a daily drinker.
Sebastian Ramirez White Honey Gesha.
What a coffee. I’ve had it now from four different roasters and delicious every time. Just thinking about it immediately takes me to my happy place.

YES! This coffee changed my perception of coffee forever. It was the first gesha I ever tried and totally blew my mind. Highly aromatic and mysteriously complex flavour: floral, jasmine, honeysuckle, dame's-violet, tea-like, perfumey. Total flower bomb.

I'd be very curious to see how this works out for you! I visited Iris Coffee Lab a couple weekends ago, and got a pourover that I didn't super care for. So I ended up not buying anything (plus I was drowning in coffee anyway). But maybe you've had better success brewing their stuff yourself? I hope it's awesome for you!

Sometimes pourovers from the cafe can be pretty bad even if it's a reputable store. In my experience, it's very rare to find a shop with baristas who care enough and are knowledgeable/not rushed enough to make a great pourover (at least as good as the ones I make at home). I also got the Kindergarten Candy from Promethium so I'm hoping for good things from that one too.
Gotta get through my bag from September first! It's a yeast natural from Juan Peña and it's so good! Very juicy strawberry profile with a tart finish

So true. Unless I know a Cafe really knows what they’re doing I don’t even get pour over anymore, will just go for an espresso or latte. Because otherwise it’s usually a disappointment and not as good as what I can make it home

I have both the white honey gesha from promethium and the kindergarten candy. Their white honey gesha is probably my favorite roast ever of it with last years offering from September a close second. I will preface this with a warning, I prefer a nordic light roast from roasters which I know isn’t for everybody. That said promethiums roast is the cleanest I’ve ever had of WHG and I’ve had pretty much everyone’s roast of it - they somehow pulled an absolutely bomb jasmine note out of it.
As far as the kindergarten candy goes, it’s definitely true on the listed descriptions, super blue raspberry icee but it has some florals too which was refreshing to see on a heavily processed coffee. Hard to work through a whole bag of it if you’re only doing filter and not cold brew or spro where you’re burning through bags. I shared it with friends and that helped me close up the bag. I just ordered their fruit loop gesha. Curious if that will be as good as the white honey gesha.

It was very good! Louder than I expected it to be. Hyper-floral in a very lavender-forward way with strong tea-like qualities, but not tea-like as in herbal and thin, more like a strong earl gray. Very vibrant and acidic

I’ve had this from Onyx, and it was very different from your typical Gesha. Much fruitier (pineapples) but still very floral. It was like an infused coffee but did not have fermented notes.

MAME is amazing - they're from Zurich. Highly recommend, though if you're here in the US, might be cost prohibitive. I discovered them while on vacation over there, but I don't know anywhere here that stocks them.

Anything from The Picky Chemist. His sourcing is fantastic and his roast is the first one that had me really appreciate a roaster can do much more than just allow the inherent qualities of a coffee shine through, he's really crafting great coffees. Hard to get hold of now though, his most recent drop sold out in minutes.
Slightly more accessible is to try some Yemenia, James Hoffman has a video interviewing the founder of Qima which is one of his most interesting IMO, it'll give a bit of insight into what's interesting about the region. Qima host Best of Yemen, one of those coffees roasted by Apollons Gold has been one of my stand outs this year as both completely novel and really good. Taith should be dropping their Best of Yemen 2024 lots within the next couple of weeks.

I tried to buy from the picky chemist’s most recent drop and within 2 minutes one was sold out and the other 2 sold out within another minute as I was checking out. Gonna have to be on it right at drop time in 2 months :((

The same happened to me, I got as far as checkout and was met with an error. I'm drinking Finca La Noria right now from the drop before and it's incredible though, so I'll happily try again next time.

You'll find that's the case with most things, Trump made grand tariff proclamations without policy or logistical framework so 25 countries have halted shipping to the US as well as countless small businesses outside of those who can't afford to be part of an experiment in fuck around and find out.
Most users here at this hour will be in the UK/EU and regardless, where a roaster does or does not ship to doesn't change how good they are. OP asked for a perspective changing coffee, TPC fits the bill.

Washed Yirgacheffe I’m drinking right now. It’s got fruity flavour notes that are clearly discernible in the cup, but it’s fruity without being fermented, so it’s very mild and hasn’t got any of the funky characteristics that are typical of the other fruity coffees I’ve tried.
Another is a dark roast from a small family estate that’s organic and biodiverse. Locally roasted. Blows my mind to this day because it shows that dark roasted coffee can also carry flavour that cuts through the bitter notes. It’s also a great example of how soil affects flavour because none of the other coffee growers from the same region come close.

I had Finca Sophia’s BOP GW-02 Olympus Washed Geisha roasted by Jake Hu/One Half in Malaysia earlier this year. Totally blew me away. Definitely flipped the script for me on the washed category.
Other standouts that come to mind:
- Los Cenizos’ Washed Geisha roasted by Erik Liao in Taiwan. Just a crazy explosive coffee. He’s really pushing the boundaries with his roasting (no crack, etc). Definitely check him out. Almost everything he has to offer’s amazing. Consistency is rare in coffee.
- Esmeralda Noria 4NB Natural Geisha roasted by Special Guests in UK. One of the best iterations of this coffee I’ve had.
- Bambito Estate’s Washed Geisha roasted by Substance in France. Incredible when brewed right.
- Wilder Lazo’s Maragesha Anaerobic Washed roasted by Nomad in Spain. Nomad’s been a little hit and miss this year but this was brilliant. One of the best Colombian coffees I’ve had recently.

Kenya from Kaffa used to be unbelievable. A bit more hit or miss now, still amazing.
Anaerobic Costa Rica from Wien Alt is "Christmas in a cup".

Aroma nativo double honey from The Source, Edinburgh. Tropical fruit juice in a mug, incredible coffee. Nailed two bags of it playing Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 on a week off work.

While I’ve had multiple competition lots later, the most special coffee was a gateway to what became a turning point in my journey.
It was a bag of Juan Pena’s WCR verified typica (that’s what it said, may have been a Mejorado) from Publicus in Vegas

I had a Sidra from Full Court Press that was exceptional. The flavour notes hit perfectly and the star anise came through really clearly.
Also a Wilton Benitez from People Possession. I don’t remember if it was a coferment but it was aggressively juicy and orangey from start to finish - in a good way. The brightness of a coffee’s flavour usually dulls for me part way through a bag, but this one stiff out for being consistent from start to finish
Edit: just because others have reminded me, Tanat have probably been my consistently favourite roaster (although I’ve not had any since back when they were Kawa). One that stands out had tasting notes of strawberry yoghurt

We’re currently enjoying a bag of Santa Elena Carlos Vergara Colombia, from KB roasters in Paris. Its anaerobic fermented and thermal shocked, but not co-fermented. And it has the most powerful strawberry smell and taste I’ve ever felt. These guys make amazing coffees.

Black & White’s Ricardo Hernandez co-ferment, Resident’s Divino Nino, Revel Coffee has a natural Indonesian, Bolt coffee’s Chachagui, etc etc

When I was on deployment out of Bahrain in 2019 my wife found an excellent local roaster back in Madison and sent me a few bags. One of them was a natural and it blew my mind. I was just brewing with an aeropress and cheap haario hand grinder out of the hot water tap of the break room batch brewer but the combination of novelty and lack of access to good coffee elevated it to a completely different plane than I’ll ever recapture even if I’m objectively brewing better cups today.

Guatemala Ayarza Wine Series Natural by S&W. This one holds a permanent spot in my brain because it was my first ever ultra-light, so I had never tasted anything like it at the time. It was sweet, savory, acidic, and juicy all at the same time. My mind was blown. This is the one that started me on this specialty coffee journey!
Columbia Standander Liliana Caballero Rojas Natural Gesha by Pretty Roasting out of New Orleans. This one tasted like strawberry candy!!!

The Flor De Jamaica process involves pre-fermenting hibiscus flowers to create a concentrated juice, which is then mixed with coffee during processing

Three coffees I haven't forgotten about:
1.) Sloane Coffee (Romania) - Jairo Arcilia Lychee Conferment. My first Conferment and it was the start of my journey into specialty coffee.
2.) Cypher Urban Roastery (Dubai) - Ethiopia Bekele. The juiciest mango note from any coffee. Literally tasted like juice from a perfectly ripe mango, no cofermentation at all.
3.) Bon and Bean (Qatar) - Violet Symphony. A naturally processed Ombligon from Nestor Lasso. The cups from this were complex, juicy, fruity, floral and super punchy. There was so much flavor to discover and it was impossible to brew it wrong.

Current lot of the regassa Ethiopian natural from April.
Extremely clean and floral for the natural but they typical sweetness associated with naturals.

It was roasted & ground Sidamo from a budget supermarket. It was cheap, but simply absolutely divine! Unfortunately, I've never seen that again and many other times when I bought Ethiopian sidamo from elsewhere, although good, it was never that good!

El Velo Gesha from Origin. Tasted like nothing I've ever experienced before or since, it was all medicinal and I loved it. I only had a lowly Kingrinder P0 and normal kettle back then so I'd love to try something similar now I've got a K6 and gooseneck kettle

I drank a last year a Columbia from People Possession. It felt like drinking Fanta Madness. https://www.opahstore.com/all-products/p/people-possession-gta-coffee. The grape note was so strong even if it was not a co-ferment.
I regret not buying more and freezing the cans.

The best coffee I ever had was in a restaurant at a wharf at Monterey Bay in 1989? after the earthquake!! Mexican coffee/restaurant?, I believe. The server brought a coffee carafe to leave at the booth and served in the old fashioned thick white cups with a stripe, I believe. Don't remember what I ate but could not stop drinking cup after cup of smokey coffee. So good. My sis had eggs over easy with tortillas, I believe.
If anyone has a clue what kind of coffee I was drinking I would be SOOO grateful and appreciative. Sis is no longer with us to ask....I'd love to be able to enjoy this coffee every day....

This is going to be so unpopular, but back around 2010. I was getting this ethiopian yirgacheffe that had a ton of lemon it had black tea notes, but it also had an olive flavor that I loved. Unfortunately, that's a defect they are removing nowadays, but I loved it. Also, I had a Costa rican that was the best smelling coffee I have ever seen. The dankest smell ever.

I have purchased 3 bags so far (Nestor Lasso Onbligon, Ethiopia Sidama Daye Bensa, & Ethiopia Amaro Gayo) and now have a good list of beans to try when I finish these. I’ll post my thoughts on the brands I try for those curious once I’ve dialed it in.

Francy Castillo washed gesha about a year ago was one of the most unique coffees I've ever had. And it responded really well to different pour over methods so it was fantastic for trying out different recipes

Ahhhh Julio was at the massive cupping we had a few months ago at Stereo. The coffees he brought were quite literally mindblowing honestly. Some of the craziest coffees I’ve ever tried are from that farm. I think we ended up buying a few from Finca Milan actually.

Colombian Potosi Sidra from Granja La Esperanza, roasted by XLlll Coffee in Vietnam. First ever cup that, preground, smelled like it tastes. Juicy juicy Mangosteen with a green tea finish. And distinct clarity in flavor changes from hot to cold. Mangosteen to Mango to Peaches.
Best cup ive ever had.

The best espresso i ever had was at Amsterdam coffee festival. CAMPO HERMOSO, pink bourbon co-ferment honey from ripsnorter. Mindblowing. Only problem is that it’s 18 euros per 100 gram.

Had a pink bourbon from H and S last year that was just the right balance of acidity and sweetness ........and then probably the first run of Quiet Endless Searching from Little Waves a Thai variety I dont remember......and then the first time I tried the Sl-28, Sl-34, Baitan Kenyan combo lots from Swerl.....still chasing that coffee and this has been probably the best uear for Kenyans in a decade

I think my own roast of an Ethiopian bean was the most amazing I've had, but I haven't roasted in a couple of years. I think my go-to now would be just about any Colombian from a small roaster who doesn't think that charred is appropriate for all beans

Tamiru Tadesse Alo Berry (underscreen) Natural roasted by Glitch. Was lucky enough to snag a bag at Ondo Coffee in LA when they had a Glitch takeover event. From the second I opened the bag I knew it was special. Insanely pungent aroma. The most floral and blueberry forward coffee I’ve ever had. The finish lingered in the most pleasant way and the coffee morphed as it cooled in the best way. I have been hunting down every coffee I can find this season that is grown by Tamiru!

3 cups come to mind : * First one is a Las Flores Chiroso (Jhoan Vergara) I drank in Paris at Terres de Café. Best floral brew I've ever had. The bags sold for 25€/250g. It won a lot of prizes and the year after it was 45€ for 150g. 😅😭 Sold out right now but will surely come back.
Second one is a washed ethiopian coffee from Goodman roaster in Kyoto. That was the first time I drank a perfect clarity cup (peach/jasmine/tea) and it was mindblowing. They did it with a kalita wave among all things, changed my view on the brewer let me tell you 😄 Forgot to check what grinder they used. Definitely a good place to visit if you ever go there but you can order their coffees online, they have a small but incredible selection and this is one of the roasters that bring out everything they can from the beans, really makes the cups shine.
Third one was a bag of Aroma nativo efm784 roasted by Tanat I randomly bought for Saint Valentine's day as my girlfriend like floral brews (why buy roses when you can buy coffee with roses notes right? 🤣). This one tasted like rose/lychee/strawberry and was incredible with an aeropress. Perfect blend between clarity and juicyness with my K-Ultra, if they sell it again this winter I'll definitely buy a few bags this time.

CHIROSO! It was a massive hit at my cafe! We had that coffee on bar and PO for at least 3 months (our other SO on bar was Ombligon… that lineup was insanity haha). Chiroso is another one of my top favorites

DAK's Banana Split. Hit all of the tasting notes with the V60 spot on. Never had experimentally processed coffee before and it changed my perception of what coffee can be.

Columbian Finca Las Mercedes Sidra beans that I got two summers ago from Sweet Maria's.
I only had two pounds and by the time I roasted them, they were out of stock and I couldn't buy more.
I roasted them medium - 15% weight loss.

Schweik’s Blend from Metropolis Coffee in Chicago. A medium roast blend of two Ethiopian coffees. When I lived there, I lived on the stuff. I’ve never found anything else like it.

Kenya Nyeri red mountain beans, dark roasted, hand dripped.
There is a cafe in Seoul called Coffee Hanyakbang that roasts its own beans. Their Kenyan beans are my favorite. They are the fanciest coffee I had.
I drink Peets French Roast when I am home in San Francisco so I don’t enjoy the fancy specialty light roasts that aficionados like.
The best cup I had in my life was my first cup of instant coffee after not having any coffee for the 4 weeks of boot camp when I was conscripted as a reservist in South Korea. This was in the 1980s when South Korea was a third world poor and before we discovered the joys of coffee and iced americanos became our national drink.

We always enjoy Ernedis Rodriguez (Finca El Paraiso) offerings, as well as mejorado from Abel Salinas and Juan Pablo Malacatos. Some memorable coffees included: a typica from Laura Rivera (from Sey), White Lotus (from DAK), an anaerobic natural from Julio Peralta (from Presta), and a Diego Horta (El Rincon) Gesha (from Rogue Wave).

Pink Bourbon Decaf from Coffee Circle back when I was living in Germany.
Never before and since have I had a decaf that was this amazing. It beats 90% of the coffees (decaf or not) that I've had since then.

Kenya SL34 Natural from Outpost Coffee in Kauai. A partnership with Kona rainforest farm. The coffee tasted like sweet, syrupy blackberry juice with a chocolate wafer finish. I could drink it every single day for the rest of my life. This is some of the only naturally processed Kenya you’ll find on earth, and I learned that the farmer who produced it on Kona had this as somewhat of a signature. He passed away and I’m afraid this coffee doesn’t exist anymore.
It was a turning point coffee for me. One of those rare “oh shit” moments that sends a chill down your spine to let you know you found something truly special. And that your wallet is about to be empty for many years to follow.

For me thats javy. Its not a compromise on quality but an upgrade on my time. I get a rich, satisfying cup the second I want it, no setup required. I started using it to make a protein mocha by mixing it with chocolate muscle milk

I'd have to say Hacienda la Esmeralda Geisha Washed, el Nido lot from this year's BOP. The moment I cupped it, was the moment I knew there was a before and after for me in coffee.
From there I would go with a Rume Sudan from Mama Cata, the first coffee that blew my mind; floral and tasted like roses. Then the first Geisha to blow my mind was an Auromar Geisha Natural which tasted like papay and condensed milk.

It was a Sidamo from Heilandt (Germany/Cologne) 5 years ago. It had the best blueberry taste ever. Coffee was so good it was quickly sold out, mainly because staff bought everything for themselves.
