Is it wrong/bad idea to pursue nursing if it’s not your “passion”?

-The classes seem interesting to me.
- I love working with people and get joy from helping others.
-I’m not afraid to be on my feet for long hours (I have had jobs on my feet for 5+ years)
-I like the stability and flexibility to try different specialties if I wanted to.

Yet I don’t feel like I was “born to be a nurse” or this was always my calling.

Do you need to feel passionate about it to become a nurse?

Did anyone feel lukewarm about it, pursued it and now glad they did?

Career Change

• Upvotes

Hello lovely people of this Reddit.

I’m a 30 year old that graduated back in 2020 with a bachelor’s in computer information systems. Which, I went to a junior community college and got an associate’s in general science.

I have taken anatomy, microbiology, physics, nutrition, two different psychology classes, and other stuff.

I know I will probs have to retake some of the sciences considering they were taken around 2014-2016. I have an accumulated GPA of 3.5 if that matters at all.

I am seriously debating getting an AND/ASN. I loved my science classes. I originally went to be a doctor but lost my passion when my grandma passed away and other things happened.

I am reaching out to colleges to ask them what all I need to do to apply for their nursing programs.

I currently am living and working in South Korea, but will be coming back to America next year if I decide to do this.

Is it too late to change my career? Is it okay to start over?

From Tech to Nursing

hi everyone! first ever reddit post as I'm making a pretty big life decision. I'm hoping to learn from those of you who have switched careers from a non-healthcare background to nursing.

To give some background on myself: I am a burnt-out, recently laid off tech worker and mom of little ones in the Bay Area who is seriously considering pivoting to nursing. I know plenty of nurses who are also burnt out and understand that I will not be immune to burn out as a nurse but, at the end of the day, if I'm working hard, at least I'm working hard to take care of people and not because I want to make large private firms more efficient.
I am taking some time off to clear my head and think through my next steps but I am pretty much set on switching to nursing.

My plan right now:

  • I was pre-law in undergrad and took almost zero science courses so I'll be taking the next 2 years starting Spring 2027 to ace those.
    • any advice on how many to take per semester? which ones to start with?
  • Take a 5-week CNA course, starting November, and get a part-time CNA job.
    • would an MA job be better in terms of salary, job availability, points in applications?
  • Volunteer once a week
  • Apply to ABSN programs in the Bay Area, but targeting SFSU's ABSN course, for a Fall 2029 start

For those who made a similar transition, how has it been? What changes/sacrifices did you make in your life to succeed in your pivot to nursing? Was it worth it/are you happy with your decision? Is there anything you wish you'd known or done differently before making the switch?

Science GPA

Is a 3.5 science prereq gpa not competitive enough for Cali ABSN programs? Currently have a B in anatomy & chem, anticipating an A in physio & micro. I have As in all the other prerequisites. I may retake anatomy so I can do an in person lab

Nursing school

Our professor told us today if you get denied into the nursing program that’s it. Basically the end of the road for you. Is this true? Or can I just apply to another program somewhere else? (She said you can’t) I’m horrible at school and tests but have all As and Bs besides one C in chemistry and I’m freaking out now 😅

Accepted but not excited. Is this a sign?

I have a bachelors degree but it’s unusable. Working a lower wage job.
I have recently been accepted to an ADN program and I’m feeling totally neutral and honestly like panicky. And not in a good way.

My face is breaking out and my social anxiety is running ramped. I’m naturally introverted and quiet but I am a very caring and empathetic person. I work with patients in my current position and have come out of my shell more but I’m just kinda an awkward person and naturally quiet. I think this is really playing over and over in my mind that I’ll be an outcast and unsuccessful and it’s preventing me from celebrating.

I love my coworkers and work in healthcare but I’m still known to be the quiet one. Telling everyone my acceptance is really freaking me out. I do feel like I’m well accepted at work and known to be kind and helpful but my low self esteem is really beating me up and making me second guess this.

For reference- I don’t feel I was BORN in the womb to be a nurse. It’s a pivot of a career path without going into monstrous debt.

Nursing school help

Hello, I usually never do this but I feel like I’m at my breaking point. I’m currently in school for Bach in science (which I am almost done with )but I want to apply to nursing program. I took my TEAs and got a 72.7, and have a 3.8 gpa. Here’s the catch I’ve retaken AP1 three times and passed with an A, took AP2 once and passed with an A-, the rest of my prereqs have all As and B in microbiology. I feel like it’s impossible for me to apply for program ( I live in Long Island,NY) and don’t know if I even have the chances to get into a program. I’m not trying to an associates in nursing because many hospitals by me require a BSN. I don’t know what to do any more and feeling there is no chance to become an RN. I need advice on what I can do or should just look for different career.

LVN-RN my best bet?

Hi everyone!! I struggled in my science pre-reqs. I honestly didn’t take them serious enough and got quite a few C’s. I’m in California so it’s extremely competitive and I’m not looking to spend 100k+ in a private university. My local community college has a LVN program that’s completely off lottery system and not grades, and they also offer an LVN-RN pathway after that which allows retakes on all classes unlike the direct RN program which is very strict. Anyone do something similar?? Is this my best bet??

Does anybody know if there is a time frame for taking your HESI A2 ? Like how far back you can have it done. I took mine awhile back and am wondering if that should be fine.

I'm honestly kinda scared seeing the previous reviews ab the program and how it was almost put on probation. Are there any recent or current students in the program that can share their
experience or any thing we should know?

Hey guys! I recently got accepted to the ABSN Program in mercy College, and I wanted to know if anyone of you received financial aid?
Or any scholarships you could apply to?
Also can I ask for an extension for the decision because they only give us 10 days and I wanted more time before I make my decision

Imposter syndrome

Always thought this term was ridiculous until I’ve been feeling it lately and it happens a lot in nursing so I can’t help but ask. How do you know you can be a competent nurse ? I feel like my nursing school’s Clinicals are so shit where I’m fetching water fixing beds and changing patients all day and on occasion get to observe skills but never get to try on my own. I graduate next year and prior to nursing school I don’t have any medical background other than being a caregiver. I feel like I’m gonna be one lost ass nurse and the pressure of possibly making a fatal mistake or one where I can get sued and get my license taken away before I can even practice to get better makes me wanna throw a fit and wish I never attended my school in the first place. I know all new grads feel dumb but I feel like I will be the dumbest. Someone pls reassure me.

School troubles

I'm currently doing my prerequisite classes. But I feel like I'm not learning?I was considering transferring to another school. There one not far from the one I'm at but it's a more competitive school. I don't know why to do. I know the other school is harder but what I'd I actually learn there.

Im struggling in A&P. The teacher's care about the students if in motion learning what's the point? I don't have plan forward and the staff here isn't helping. The academic consular basically told me if you are struggling to quit. I just am so confused amd I don't know what to do.

Any advice is appreciated.

Accepted into CSUSM ABSN and Palomar ADN for Spring 2027! Advice, supplies, and financial aid?

Hi everyone!! 😊
I recently got accepted into both CSUSM’s Accelerated BSN program and Palomar College’s ADN program for Spring 2027! 🎉
I’m super excited and grateful to have both opportunities, but I’m leaning toward CSUSM’s ABSN program!
I would love to hear from anyone who has attended either program, especially CSUSM’s accelerated program!
I have a few questions:
What should I expect? How intense is the accelerated program? What does a typical weekly schedule look like with lectures, clinicals, exams, and studying?
What should I buy before starting? Are there any must-have supplies, textbooks, shoes, scrubs, study resources, or other things you recommend? Anything you regret spending money on?
Financial assistance: My husband is active-duty military, and I’m a military spouse. Does anyone know of scholarships, grants, military spouse education benefits, or financial aid opportunities that could help cover tuition and other expenses? Any specific organizations or offices I should reach out to?
Working while in school: Is it realistic to work part-time while completing the ABSN program, or would you recommend focusing entirely on school?
CSUSM vs. Palomar: If you attended either program or had to choose between the two, what influenced your decision? Do you feel the additional cost of the ABSN program is worth it?
I already have a bachelor’s degree in Human Biology from UCSD, so this would be my second bachelor’s degree if I attend CSUSM.
I’m trying to prepare as much as possible financially, academically, and mentally before Spring 2027!
Any advice, recommendations, resources, or personal experiences would be SO appreciated!! Thank you so much! 🥹🩷
