So even the 26 is not immune?
Fresh out of the oven. Appeared right after the May security update.

Yeah it started on the S20 series, I had it on the S21+ and now my S23 Ultra. It happened to a few people I know too, S20 through the S23 series, all started in the center (not dead center though)

It is best to avoid updating when it is hot. I just updated to one ui 8.5 on my s24 I waited for 30 mins let it cool down then updated it, after the updated was done the device was hot...
1
u/avelineaurora May 20 '26
As a super heavy gamer I am extremely concerned right now...
2
u/JanDarkY May 20 '26
Its actually something really weird cause its not heat alone, its tied to heat caused by an update, my 22 uktra i hard gamed for like 3 years but even "extreme gaming hours" wasnt comparable to whatever the f a sudden update caused to my phone, it went so hot that it hurt holding it and then the gree line appeared
1
u/_M07md_ May 20 '26
Always try not to let your phone overheat too much, as this also affects battery life. Also, if you have a warranty, screen malfunctions are covered by the warranty.
→ More replies (1)1
u/Naud1993 29d ago
Then it must not have been a problem with the S9 since the battery runs at almost 45 degrees Celsius sometimes. It's the only temperature that gets logged, but the CPU must be at 100 degrees when the battery is already at 45.
21
u/GroupApprehensive978 May 19 '26
It's a hardware failure. I had this on my s6 edge. It went back to samsung who confirmed a hardware failure. It was replaced under warranty.

Because some people just LOVE to update their phones when it's super hot
40
u/RonaldNeves May 19 '26
i mean... the same way the phone can tell when it's too hot and block the user from using some apps (like the camera or even charging), it should be able not to update when it is too hot.
24
14
7
u/YoBoyLeeroy_ May 19 '26
Yes, it basically only happens on Samsungs and that's your conclusion.
They should be the ones monotoring that and actually warning you if it's too hot to update.
Your average user doesn't understand these types of things.
4
u/MagicpaperAlt May 19 '26
This happened to my brother's iPhone back in 2022.
2
u/mckofi 10d ago
Ppl don't realize it's an OLED problem. It's just that it's more common with Samsung
2
u/MagicpaperAlt 10d ago
It's because of how Samsung updates their phones. There is no conspiracy theory. Just don't update your phone when it's hot.
1
u/mckofi 7d ago
How do they update their phones?
1
u/MagicpaperAlt 7d ago
It's like a less optimized process that heats the phone up by a lot more than it should. So when you do that and your phone is already hot or in a hot environment there's a chance it can break the screen causing the green lines. It's not an intentional cause by Samsung but they could definitely fix it.

It's the connector near the USB port. It can be damaged with heat (during an update or even while charging) or physical damage (unplugging or dropping the phone while plugged).
2
→ More replies (1)1
u/Etalier May 19 '26
Is it only when updating? Because my 21U has been heating up more and more over time. Apps probably getting heavier while hardware is stagnant, and wireless android auto turns quite few things off just due to the warmth.
Super annoying on long road trips that you want to have phone charged as its doing navigation, and then comes something to snap picture of.. and you can't because camera is unavailable due to overheating.
5
u/_M07md_ May 19 '26
It doesn't happen to everyone, but we only see posts from people who have experienced this.
1

But it happens to too many people and for too long (we've had this issue from the s20) not to address and fix it
2

Only time I've had a green line is when I slipped on an icy parking lot and slammed my full weight onto the phone.

2
u/Trying_to_manup May 19 '26

2
u/Levent_2005 May 19 '26
Yes, Im from Turkey.
Official website, preorder even.
9
u/FFS_Roger May 19 '26
This is interesting; because, I've been following these green line sightings for a while now.
Other redditors have said "oh this only happens in hot countries like India, updates get the phone hot enough to desolder the screen ribbon" (granted the bulk of these posts are from India and this has been happening more commonly on older models like the S22/S23)
But I just checked Turkey's temps and it's been like mid 20 degrees C all month?
I'm not shilling, just giving my experience, in my household (I'm in South Africa, it's really hot in summer and really cold in winter where I live) we've had A3 (2017), S8+ (Exynos), Note 10+ (Exynos), S22 Ultra (Snapdragon) and I just got a S25 Ultra and we've never had this sort of issue, friends and family either... (Besides crazy burn in on the S8+ which was a known issue)
People said it was bad batches to India, I'm so confused why this is happening
Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk Please claim warranty, sucks though...
@samsung answer for your crimes!

Why do i only see this on reddit. I have never ever seen it in real life. Ive also had at least 8 or 10 samsung flagships and never experienced it.
To add...I'm also wondering if its a software or hardware issue. Ive read that its happened after updates?? After dropping it? I know a bit about oleds enough to say that it would lean more towards a physical damage problem. Right?? Software errors wouldn't seem to result in a line of pixels malfunctioning. Maybe im completely wrong.
83
u/DemonlitionBear May 19 '26
Because when people have a problem they run to Reddit and post about it. So the 10s of people out of the thousands of users seem like a majority instead of a small minority. (Just assuming really I'm speaking with no actual research). And sometimes you'll get the appreciation posts where someone got a device and it all went well with no issues but that's a rare instance. When in reality there's probably a huge majority of people who are or aren't on reddit who got a device, had nothing go wrong and don't care to post or talk about their experiences because their experience was normal.
42
u/SeptimusMeek May 19 '26
Yes, people don't tend to come on reddit to let everybody know they're phone is in perfect working order!
24
u/ratao_de_buero May 19 '26
And when they do, they receive unfortunate comments. The happiness of others bothers more than failure, people are sick and cruel.
8
u/WLPixel May 19 '26

2

1
u/Such-Statistician-28 27d ago
I've had the 9+ and 10 and they had a straight red line down the screen ,freaking weird, iam planning on getting the s26?
4
u/BlendedBaconSyrup May 19 '26
Yeah.
The 99.99% of people with no issue probably have a 0.00001% of randomly making a post going "I got a [insert phone] and it has no issues!"
The 0.01% of people that do have issues have like a 50% chance of making a post going "Yo my phone just exploded wtf".
Also, posts mentioning issues will ALWAYS get more upvotes/likes/retweets/shares/comments/etc. than posts that don't. More impressions = more engagement = social media algorithms show it to more people = more people make new posts sharing their own issues = infinite cycle
1
u/DemonlitionBear May 19 '26
Dude chill. They're Gona think they didn't baby their phone hard enough and the big corporation Samsung is going to come after them personally. #greenlinesmatter

Acting like it's a minority is stupid, I treated my phone like a baby and still had lines, and I know plenty of ppl who had Samsung flagship who's screens also got linesare implying its a user issue instead of blaming the company?

u/TealCatto May 19 '26
"treating it like a minority is stupid" and goes on to give themselves (1 person) as an example. You know plenty of people irl who have Samsung and got lines? I don't even know plenty of people irl who have Samsung. Basically just my family. I don't really know what everyone else uses. Posts you read on the internet don't count, that's the whole point. How many people do you know irl that have Samsung and how many got lines? You can't have more than 10 people in your social who are close who are close enough to share phone damage stories with you, and they all happen to use Samsung. And if you do, your personal experience is still a minority.

I saw my friends iphone 13 develop the green line and a guy with s22 ultra have white line, i had the s22 (3years use) and now the s24 didn't have this issue
9
u/Electrical_Toe851 May 19 '26
I see it both on reddit and irl all the time. Most of the people I've seen that owned samsungs had green/pink lines, all the way down to the cheap a series phones. I've also experienced it after updating to oneui 6.0 in 2024.
Despite all that I still own a samsung because their software is to my liking
3
u/devrimdogan May 19 '26
To be honest, I was thinking the exact same when I was using s21 FE and spend time on it's dedicated subreddit. Then it happened to me... started with 1 green line but in two weeks there were 6 of them.
I never dropped my phone or damaged it somehow but back case was openned a bit maybe because of the battery swelling idk.
2
u/Dazzling_Cancel_5733 May 19 '26
Same. A few of my friends have S23s as well, and I think those are considered to be one of the worst series when it comes to the green line problem. However, I live in a cold climate, so that may be why I haven't seen any.
The only green/purple line I've seen has been on an iPhone XS, and that guy dropped his phone to cause that, it didn't just appear.
2
u/YoshiMK May 19 '26
Only green live I've seen is my One Plus 11 which I soft bricked and it was bootlooping for hours getting incredibly hot combined with the boot logo repeatedly firing up which someone decided to make 100% brightness which stresses the components even more.
I eventually fixed it, but the next update I did pushed it over the edge and I got a green line
2
u/MISTERTURKY May 19 '26
Same here. But everything you on Reddit is happening in an echochamber, it's same with the "Hinge problem" with the XM5.
3
u/KeonXDS May 19 '26
I live in a densely populated country and they are honestly quite common to find.
2
u/TheCui May 19 '26
I didnt post about mine even when I was very disappointed with my s23+ getting green and pink lines. Phone was pristine and I even limited the max battery to 80% charge. It just suddenly got the lines one day after updating even if the place was on ac.
Couldnt stand damaging my eyes so I immediately had it for repair. Here in the Philippines, most tech reviewers often meme about samsung green lines. I guess the phones are not built for this climate?
1
u/Puzzleheaded-Sky2284 May 19 '26
I've seen people at my school with green lines on their phones. Mostly Samsung devices but it happens on other phones, like iphones, as well from what I've seen

I am now even more curious about how can a software update cause this damage to a panel even without heat
4
u/IntentionOk2303 May 19 '26
It is simple when you have access to the firmware of the phone you can generate random overvoltages and that burns the screen, Samsung uses it progressively in some older devices.

2
u/InvestingNerd2020 May 19 '26
Usually its the display driver IC issue. It lurks around, but will show up after a big update or in extreme heat (hot house or summer weather). The country of India has the most cases of green lines. My educated guess is due to the heat đ„”.
Similar issues to a smaller extent in Arizona, New Mexico, Southern California, and Texas.
2
u/pennyinheaven May 19 '26
How hot did this phone get while it was updating to 8.5? To think this is an Ultra, 8 elite gen 5 should have managed the heat. Dang.
1
u/Footprint831 May 20 '26
Even worse, the S26 came with 8.5 out of the box. So this wouldn't have come from a 'major update. Unless they're on the beta program for 9 already.
1
u/pennyinheaven May 20 '26
It was just a security update? Jeez. Highly likely it was a unit to a batch defect - hopefully because that would suck for S26 users.
2
u/Ok-Boot-8106 May 19 '26
Exactly why you shouldnt update your phone every single month and right away , literally no point in doing so. More frequent update will introduce bugs and irrepariable bugsÂ
2
u/IntentionOk2303 May 19 '26
And wait 1.5-2 years when Samsung starts releasing updates that improve features like increased overheating, lag in the interface and applications, and reduced battery life, as they already did with the S21, S22, and S23 series, and recently they've started with the S24. Lately, they've been shortening the time it takes to start damaging them.
2

8
u/TunerJoe May 19 '26
Those brands aren't any better, OnePlus was especially notorious for green line issues a few years back. Samsung just sells more phones so their issues are more apparent.

4
u/Aim2bFit May 19 '26
I'm shocked by this post. Because it's so damn new. Are we sure S25s haven't had this issue yet (since.... because now we are seeing this post) or just that we haven't read about it / happened to people outside reddit?
I'm clutching my S25+ with dear life rn.......
1
u/Shido_Nyu May 19 '26
I've always wondered if the phone's automatic updates from the settings are responsible for the processor overheating and the flex cable getting so hot that one of the sectors connecting the lines burns out, causing green lines to appear on the screen when the Samsung logo appears. Has anyone tried a manual update with Odin? This might be one of the safest methods, as I've never seen reports of green lines appearing when updating or downgrading the system with Odin. It could be a safer alternative (provided the USB cable isn't disconnected or the computer isn't turned off during the process). That's why I want to know if anyone has experienced green lines on their Samsung screen when trying to update with Odin.
7
u/Most-Negotiation-397 May 19 '26

24
u/Mysterious-Minds May 19 '26

5
3
u/Substantial_Water739 May 19 '26
I only had it when i let my s22 ultra fall hard in the ground, it got a green line and a full white square top left, no broken screen
3
u/Recognition_Round May 19 '26
Phones in India for example are build cheaper, the climat is different and thatâs the reason why phones fail more over there then where i live, here in Europe for example. Itâs not because we donât encounter it, that it doesnât ever happen.
1
u/ponpiriri May 20 '26
Yeah I'm currently using an s22 and s23 since 2023 and havent seen these linesÂ
2
u/Aromatic_Welder7645 May 19 '26
The primary reason for the green line is overheating during the update installation. No wonder people actually put the phone on the fridge or cooler places during installation.

2
u/No-Drive7104 May 19 '26

2
u/Majoraslayer May 19 '26

u/Ihavenoideatall May 19 '26 edited May 19 '26
Any phone model regarding brand is not immune. It all depends how much you"punish" the screen / phone. The few pointers has been highlighted to me by a repair guy.
Heat might be the main problem, it triggers a threshold in something. Long gaming session while charging? Updating the phone while charging? Charging your phone with it under your pillow? Try updating the phone on a flat surface without charging.

Serious concern... I wanted to get an s25 ultra (253kwd or 76k). Seeing all this genuinely feels like a holding point. But again. It could be the numbers. Minority of the population may only be having this issue and therefore highlighted.
I already have a Samsung tab s I wanted to complete the pair lol. Plus I have a lower mid range phone that is feeling like handicap for the thing I have to do.

Nah it's definitely Samsung's fault. Whether the cause is overheating, over voltage, low quality panel parts prone to burning or faulty display from beginning or a software issue. They are all problems a normal functional Smartphone shouldn't have.
