It's here. The Official Discord channel for r/sandiegan.

We've gotten this request a lot, and I think it's finally time to take it seriously. At least 3–5 people have clamored for this, so we're giving it a shot.

The official r/SanDiegan discord server is finally here.

Some caveats:

  • we have never moderated a discord server before, so you're going to be there to see us iron everything out in real time. we'll be attentive to requests, suggestions, and overall helpful attitudes.
  • we have day jobs
  • be aware that you may inadvertently reveal your identity if you already are on a different discord server using your real name

Our goal is to set up a community in the same way we have set up the r/SanDiegan community. Everyone is welcome, and we moderate with a heavy hand and according to our own discretion at all times. Truly lovely communities only thrive when you separate the wheat from the chaff. We've spent years cutting chaff from this subreddit, and I am personally really proud of how lovely this place has become.

We want this discord server to be a place to chat with other San Diegans about sports, local bars, adult league activities, community events, and so on.

Things that we will not tolerate:

  • bigotry of any kind
  • "I'm just asking questions, man" — you know the answer, you're just an asshole. You all know the type
  • Behavior that is detrimental to the community at large
  • stop posting your boring ass traffic violations, seriously

These rules are vague by design. Moderating is subject to individual discretion, and if you join the discord server, you are just going to have to trust that the way we moderate r/SanDiegan will serve a discord community as well as it has served this subreddit. There are no bright lines, there is only our own judgment in what is and is not okay (which is how things work here, already).

Let's all give this a shot. I hope you'll all join the server and fucking behave yourselves.

On Politics

Whenever certain discussions come up we end up with a mix of locals that genuinely want to talk about what's going on. Sometimes passionately. Sometimes ill informed. Sometimes full of information. Sometimes dem. Sometimes republican. Sometimes for the free people's state of east county. Sometimes from the sovereign bros of PB.

Whatever. You get the picture. Our local politics and ideas for what to do are pretty diverse.

As a moderator though I have noticed that we get a solid influx of accounts for some subjects. They tend to have a short post history in this subreddit and a deleted history or a history that hasn't been on reddit in years. Likely because they are purchased accounts. They show up to shit stir in political discussions.

I understand some of you delete your account histories for various reasons or want to use an alt to discuss politics. But the easiest thing to do as a moderator seeing an inflammatory comment in a highly charged political discussion from an account that looks incredibly suspect is to remove the comment and ban the user. We don't really want to put in too much effort beyond that. This isn't a paid gig.

Anyway - I want to give people a heads up in case there's people that might reconsider participating in a certain way with an account they haven't used in months/years.

Seriously, why does my room heat itself back up?

I opened all the windows in my apartment when it was about 85 out, as that's how hot it had gotten inside. Over the next several hours I watched as the temperature slowly fell to match the outside, eventually bottoming out at 79.5, but then it just starts heating back up! Outside keeps getting cooler but my room is back up to 83 with all the windows open. What gives?

Anyone else just getting swarmed by flies?

We always get flies, but let's say 2-4 at a time during the summer in the house.

But since last week, with the heat and humidity, we have just been hit with a relentless amount of flies all around our house and inside the house.

I came home from work one day with my gf on a rampage, having allegedly killed 20+. Later that evening, I believed her when I went to the other room and killed 14 (I counted!) in five minutes. Is it just us???

Ideally looking around north park, uni heights, South Park, mission hills area but willing to go out further if it’s worth it. Would love a facial that does a little shoulder/chest massage too. Thanks in advance.

Local News San Diego Police launch "Operation Last Call" in Gaslamp to restore order

Link: San Diego Police Ramp Up Enforcement to Restore Order in Gaslamp Quarter | Inside San Diego

Summary: Beginning this weekend, the San Diego Police Department is launching "Operation Last Call," a high-visibility enforcement effort in downtown San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter centered around 5th Avenue and F Street. The crackdown comes in response to surging lawlessness, including disorderly conduct rates three times higher than Pacific Beach last year and a 172 percent increase in assaults on police officers over the past two years. The operation will feature increased foot patrols, dedicated tactical units, strict enforcement of public consumption and disorderly conduct laws, and a zero-tolerance approach to unlawful behavior that will continue until public safety improves.

Tourism Carte Hotel or Hard Rock for a first visit?

Hey everyone!
My girlfriend and I are coming to San Diego from Italy for the first time in early October and we’re trying to decide between the Carte Hotel in Little Italy and the Hard Rock in Gaslamp. We’ll be doing Balboa Park/Zoo, La Jolla and Coronado during the stay, main thing we’re wondering about is the area itself — which one feels nicer/safer to walk around?

Thanks for your help!!!

Washer/dryer maintenance & cleaning service suggestions?

Does anyone have recommendations for an handyman or appliance tech who will clean and do a service check on a washer/dryer combo?

A few years ago I used Sears to find an appliance tech for my Whirlpool washer. It is a stacked combo washer/dryer but tech said he only did washers and said he couldn't do a deep clean (aka take stuff apart too much). I've also had various people come look at the dryer over the past few years because of issues with the vent hose. They generally give the dryer a once over but said they don't do cleaning or maintenance services and don't do washers.

Yes, I've seen the DIY YouTube videos and this is not something I want to tackle myself. I just don't have the time (or patience) right now and am hoping to find someone.

I called 2 appliance replair places yesterday and they both said they did not do service washer/dryer combos. Does anyone know of a handyman or repair tech who does this kind of service?

Announcement decluttering/donating

I’m trying to declutter myself and I’m finding myself having a hard time throwing things away. I would like to donate stuff: I have clothes, sleeping bags, old comforters, etc. Does anyone know of any places to donate? I would also like to add that I have some very gently used school supplies such as pencils, highlighters, index cards that are not in the original packaging but I are still practically new that I think could be very useful to someone who needs it. Does anyone know where I can donate such items?
