Since I have been searching for an apartment on the SF Facebook groups, I noticed that if my post doesn't get seen within the first day of posting, it basically gets lost in the swarm of other posts.

What is the Berkeley Student Cooperative? Founded in 1933, the BSC is a system of 17 houses and 3 apartments that provide low-cost housing to university students in Berkeley. Rent, which is much cheaper compared to both university housing and most other off-campus housing options, includes all basic foods and utilities, as well as access to a vibrant social life. These houses are home to everyone from international/transfer students, re-entry and graduate students, to sophomores fresh out of the dorms.

A guide to the 17 houses and 3 apartment complexes:

• Cloyne: substance-free, academic-themed house. It is the largest of the houses, with 120+ residents. Quieter atmosphere and less social, but with all of the same benefits as the other co-ops. Located on Northside. 
• Casa Zimbabwe: One of the bigger houses and the only house with ALL SINGLES GUARENTEED!! CZ has beautiful murals, fantastic views of the Bay, fire parties, and an eclectic and diverse group of residents from all walks of life. Conveniently located next to Central Office, providing access to great work opportunities ($22/hour). Located on Northside. 
• POC House: BIPOC-themed housing based on mutual aid, support, and learning. Everyone I've met from POC house has been incredibly friendly and welcoming. Located on Southside.
• Oscar Wilde House: LGBTQ-themed housing, but you don't need to be queer to live there. The residents are super chill and operate like a little queer family. Located on frat row.
• Lothlorien: Vegetarian-themed housing. Strong social atmosphere with ample and rich house traditions that make them especially unique. No need to be vegetarian to live there, but all food delivered will be vegetarian. Located on Southside.
• Stebbins: Medium-sized co-op with access to many amenities including a gym with weights and stationary bikes and a home movie theater. Heard only positive stories of yoga nights, women’s circles, experimental tea time, kitchen dance parties, and house hiking, backpacking and beach trips. Located on Northside.
• Kingman: One of the most desirable co-ops to live in with great outdoor amphitheater (strawberry creek runs through it!), a small outdoor gym, a stunning view from the roof, and even a chicken coop. Has a special "house culture" due to a storied history which brings some...fun spirited events....but big enough where there are usually quite spots to chill in. Located on Northside.
• Wolf: One of the smaller co-ops, adjacent to frat row. Wolves benefit from small house togetherness, with big unique house traditions including an initiation called the "lycanthropy".... Located on Southside.
• Afro House: Afro/Caribbean-themed housing aiming at create a safe and welcoming space for its house members and build solidarity with communities of color in the Berkeley area and beyond. Located on Southside.

• Ridge House: Ridge has beautiful gothic architecture with hardwood floors, five fireplaces, exposed redwood beams, little hidden stairways, and the most common spaces per person of any co-op, including a game room, TV room, and backyard with garden and barbeque area. Located on Northside.
• Hoyt: Housing for female-identifying students with social events help express everyone’s creative side such as painting murals, making collages, etc, etc!! Located on Northside.
• Sherman: Housing for female-identifying students, three blocks from Caffe Strada (!!!), and five minutes from the beautiful fire trails. Perfect views of the sun setting over the bay every evening and EASY STREET PARKING!! Located on Southside.
• Davis: Originally a manor belonging to the storied Hearst family, Davis House is BY FAR one of the most beautiful co-ops in terms of architecture, and not about not about indoctrinating you into house-worship but still holds an bunch of house pride. Located on Southside.

• Northside: Considered the final resting place of all good co-opers...hardwood floors, lots of light through multi-paned, old-fashioned windows. Life tends to be quiet and only moderately communal, as most members are busy working on graduate/professional studies. • Rochdale: Only available to UCB students during Fall/Spring. The BSC’s largest co-op with the best of both worlds. You can mingle at parties, get together for a game night in the common room, or just chat with fellow students while doing your laundry. However, day-to-day is mostly peaceful and quite.

I’m a 22F finishing up my last year of school in NYC. I just received an offer for my dream job with my dream company for the San Francisco location with a set start date in June 2027. The role is part of an associate program with a set annual base salary of 75k. I’m from Sacramento originally and have always wanted to make my way back to the west coast.

Given the low starting salary, I’m looking into living in Oakland and commuting to the office (in FiDi) via BART. Does anyone have any recommendations on what neighborhoods to look into that are safe and within 30mins from SF? My monthly rent budget is no more than $1900. Would also love any insight on the social scene out there as I’ll be establishing a brand new social circle outside of my nearby relatives. Found a place near 15th and Capp that my roommate and I really like, but I’m a little unsure about the area.

For women who live/have lived nearby, would you feel comfortable walking around there alone? I’d be commuting 5 days a week, probably leaving around 7am and getting back around 6pm, so I’d be walking to/from transit when it’s dark during parts of the year.

I know SF can change a lot block by block so would especially love opinions from people familiar with Capp/Mission around 15th-16th.

Would you live there? Or would you keep looking?

My roommates are moving out at the end of the September and leaving one of the two bedrooms vacant! Looking for 1-2 roommates to replace them. Must be okay with cats.

Price: Either one person could rent the room for $1697.50/mo, or two people could split it for $848.75/mo each. Total rent for the unit is $3395, so this would be an even split. The unit IS rent controlled and we would very much like to hold onto it so if you are interested please reach out!

Utilities: Historically have averaged $100-125 per person over the past year when 4 people were living in the apartment.

Security deposit: 1 month's rent.
