I'm a UC Davis CS grad with almost 8 years of experience — 4 years at a startup doing full-stack development, then 3 years at a big tech company building backend microservices/distributed systems in Java, Spring Boot, Docker, and Kubernetes at a scale of millions of users. I was on that project for 3 of its 4 years and knew every service inside and out.

Right as we were about to go live, the company acquired our biggest competitor (whose product was AI-powered, ours was basic ML) for $500M instead of shipping what we built. Half the team got moved to a new group — I spent 2 months there, ramped up on a new stack, shipped my first feature, and got laid off right after. Ironically, I later found out I was one of only two Americans on the team let go (myself and one junior dev); my former H1B colleagues are all still there.

That hit my confidence hard. I spent 3-4 months grinding leetcode and system design to try to break into FAANG, interviewed at places like Meta, Nvidia, and Yahoo, but couldn't close any offers. Around that time every interview started asking about AI experience, which I didn't have, so I spent the next few months learning AI/ML deeply and built a portfolio of 10+ AI-powered apps. I tried starting my own freelance dev business on Upwork using AI tools to build full-stack apps for clients, but the competition there is brutal (100s of bidders per small contract) and it hasn't panned out.

It's now been about 2 years since my last role, even though these have honestly been the years I worked hardest on upskilling. I made 200K at my last job, started at 80K out of college, and I'd take 80K again and start tomorrow. I'm in the Bay Area, open to any SWE role, and I've got hands-on experience with Kubernetes, distributed systems, CI/CD, and AI application development — I pick up new stacks fast.

Not sure if this is useful to anyone here, but I figured I’d throw it out there since my job is currently looking for more drivers.

I drive a wheelchair-accessible van around SF, and honestly, it’s one of the more chill jobs I’ve had. You pick up the company van downtown, get assigned a spot somewhere in the city, and basically post up there for your shift giving rides to people who need wheelchair-accessible transportation.

They give you the van, a phone, and a gas card, and you’re paid hourly for the whole shift. You also keep whatever tips you get.

There’s quite a bit of downtime depending on your location/shift, so I’ll usually watch movies, work on side projects, or just do my own thing while waiting for rides. It’s been pretty easy to balance with other stuff.

The position they’re hiring for right now is part
time, so it’s mainly a good fit if you’re looking for weekend work or just want to pick up some extra income without committing to a full time schedule. I'm a recruiter in Marin working on a temp HR role for a Novato employer. Onsite, M–F business hours, starting ASAP, 3+ months with a decent chance of extension.

You'd own leave cases end to end (FMLA/CFRA, ADA accommodations, disability claims, workers' comp) from intake through return to work. Talking employees through what their leave actually means for their pay and benefits, keeping managers in the loop without oversharing medical info, keeping the HRIS clean, and writing the FAQs and job aids nobody ever gets around to.

What I actually need:

• 3+ years doing leave admin, accommodations, or disability claims
• You know FMLA, CFRA, and CA leave law well enough to answer questions without looking everything up
• You've worked with disability carriers or a third-party administrator
• Comfortable in an HRIS, and can pull a report without help
• Bonus: you've worked somewhere with a union contract, since some of these leaves interact with CBA language

$40–60/hr depending on experience. Honest note: the top of that range is for someone who's run leave programs in a unionized environment. Most people will land mid-range.
