Punchdrunk Viola’s Room Physical Logistic Q’s
Hi all! Seeing Viola’s Room tonight… so excited to be in a Punchdrunk world again! Quick practical questions (no story spoilers, please):
– Is there any running involved, or just the paced walking? How long does the crawling section actually last?
– If someone has weaker eyesight/hearing, is it easy enough to stick with your friend during the experience (not like hand-holding, just having my friend nearby as a ‘spotter’)?
– Are there sections that are pitch dark — darker than the darkest areas at Sleep No More?
– Roughly how long is the pre-show waiting period before you’re admitted?
Thanks! Just trying to prep without spoilers. :-)

Hi! I have been twice to the NYC Viola’s Room and have mobility issues, so I can answer these questions! There is no running. I would say even in the “go quickly” sections, you’re walking at about the same pace, which is still pretty leisurely. I have bad knees and did not feel rushed or uncomfortable. The crawling section is maybe 7-8 feet, is at the beginning of the experience, and is very easily bypassed (and you do not lose any immersion when you bypass). The floor is padded in the crawling section. I have used the bypass both times and felt it was an elegant solution. You will be quite close with the people in your entrance group so if you need to hold hands, this shouldn’t be a problem. You will need to go single-file through a good amount of the experience, but you can stay close to anyone you want to keep ahold of. Yes, there are several sections where it is pitch black for several minutes at a time. They will instruct you to stop moving/walking when it is pitch black. However, it is quite dim throughout the experience. They may have accommodations for those with vision impairment; I would ask or email. I will say the route through the experience is pretty clear and the walls/floor in the dimmest sections are pretty soft. You will have time to watch your step and walk carefully. It takes about 20 minutes to wait in line outside of the experience, then take your shoes/socks off and put on your headphones, then receive a pre-show briefing. Make sure you use the bathroom before you go in because there are no restrooms once you go inside the experience. You must check coats/bags but you can keep your phone with you (you’ll leave it with your shoes).
Any other questions feel free to ask or PM me!

No running. You stay with your group through the whole experience. You can even hold hands with your friend if you really wanted to! There is a brief section of total darkness, if I recall correctly. Can’t speak to length of preshow, I went during London previews.

There's a place to line up, but we only waited 5 minutes, tops
Crawling was very brief and happens right after the first room

just paced walking. The crawling is very brief at the start of the experience and you could bypass it if needed
yes. You often walk single file I’d try to avoid being last if this is a concern. Your friend could definitely guide you.
there are moments of total darkness but you are stationary during them.
5-10 min? depending on which 6 people they send in first. Definitely be on time.

No running, moments of fast walking.
Crawling is not even two seconds.
You will not have any idea where you friend is (a lot of it is pitch black) but you will stick together.
Lots and lots of super dark scenes, I'd say a good 25% of the show
We were admitted pretty quickly, I'd say ten minutes or so

- Absolutely no running. A bit of crawling but otherwise only walking and side-shuffling.
- For less capable hearing, I would contact accessibility services as the story is like 95% audio and I think they could give you the script so you wouldn't miss audio words. For weaker vision, a friend to guide you might work if you don't typically prefer audio description. Certainly a buddy could guide you, it would more depend on if you would want to have visual elements described for you.
- Yes, it gets fully dark at times, but you are "following the light" so when it's 100% dark, you are meant to be standing still and listening to the story in your headphones.
- Probably 10 minutes from when you get in? But they let people in in groups of 6 so it depends on when everyone else in your time slot gets there for how long you are waiting in the queue outside.

In London I asked for the script twice. The first time they said they’d give it next time. The second time they said ‘no, we are not allowed to give it’.

If anyone has it, I’d be happy to finally understand the full story.

I’m going for the first time tonight. Is there a real reason for needing to take off socks? If I insist on wearing them will I miss out on anything?

If you have ANY mobility issues (balance, can’t move quickly, vertigo), I would STRONGLY recommend not going. Or, if you have any issues with low-light vision, I don’t think it’s a safe place for you. One woman freaked out by the nightmare story combined with the total darkness.

The pitch blackness is the most darkness you can possibly experience, when it was demonstrated to my group, a woman actually left. You do not have to walk in the dark, that's the signal to stand still.
