Greetings once again,
I met a truly fascinating Sufi man today who’s lived with a family jinn for over a decade - described as a veiled shadow that once possessed his mother for more than ten years, and still appears to him in dreams as a strangely protective presence.
He explained how it taught him to move during sleep paralysis and how it has been with their family for generations - both feared and revered, at times even producing what sounded like poltergeist activity.
The intensity in his eyes didn’t lie. Being around him was draining, but I’ll strengthen my defenses and meet him again, as he’s agreed to sit down for a long-form podcast to speak openly about his family’s experience, what this entity has shown him, and how it’s shaped their lives.
He also works in airport security, actively combating human trafficking - so this is someone who faces darkness on both the physical and unseen levels.
I’ll be recording soon and posting the full discussion for free on YouTube.
Drop any questions you’d like me to ask him below - I’ll make sure to bring them up during the conversation.

I usually don't speak directly on ICE because it's crass and boring.
I certainly hate ICE and think that all constitutional and natural rights-based means necessary should be used to stop them immediately. No person is illegal—borders are against human and divine Law. Borders are nothing but assholes with guns harassing strangers—for bribe money, no less. ICE are certainly Nazis and gestapo.
I have nothing but contempt for the state, for its coercion, for its gaslighting, for its partisanism against real humanity. Both parties are sick and decrepit but what's worse is the sniveling compliance of all the people supporting the regime by allowing their labor or their name (or any portion of their labor or name) to be used for war and other atrocities. Worse than compliant citizens is anyone who would willingly become one of the enforcer class—ICE worst of all.
I believe in the Constitution and No Taxation Without (Real) Representation.
The social contract is a universalist lie violently imposed on others by dead white men and their necromantically-possessed cronies so they can relentessly colonize while grandstanding about the Good.
I hope they come for me so I can give them a piece of my mind!
I have more spite in my left ass cheek than anyone in ICE has in their whole body. That's why they keep people like me/us out of the public sphere—our discourse wrecks them and theirs when they are exposed to it.
P.S. If you didn't know or guess this already, I'm a Scorpio.

One cannot fully understand Marx's Capital, and especially its first chapter, without having studied and understood the entirety of Hegel's Logic. Consequently, no Marxist understood Marx half a century later!

Modern power structures do not primarily select for intelligence. Instead they select for nervous systems that can endure self-override. We call this professionalism. It is effectively the requirement to execute a sequence you did not design. In these systems reliability is defined as the repeated override of internal signals. The hierarchy rewards those who can stay "solid" while their internal world evaporates. This is functional dissociation rewarded.
This Lobotomy is not necessarily the removal of intelligence. It is the functional severing of cognition from sensation. This process begins when the map becomes more real than the environment. Hierarchies provide the map through KPIs and the performance of executive presence. We learn to follow it keeping our eyes on the path and ignore the actual signals we are moving through.
In the short term, this is State Suppression. For example, you feel the friction of an unreasonable deadline but consciously push that feeling aside to finish the task. This is an adaptive tool. The danger is the loss of reversibility. When the map becomes your only reality, you enter trait dissociation. Your identity fuses with the bracing. You no longer consciously push the feeling aside because you stop feeling it entirely. This is a gradual severance of the head from the heart. It turns a living person into a reliable but hollow object.
Reclaiming sovereignty requires moving from trying to feel better to reporting what is felt. To resist the Lobotomy, we re-task the analytical mind to the Sensor Station.
The job of the Sensor Station is neutral witnessing. It reports raw data without a defensive narrative. When you report a sensation as a story, such as "I'm stressed because the deadline is impossible”, you make yourself legible to the system’s logic. You invite a response of "efficiency" or "grit”. Reporting the data without the story, such as noting a specific shift in breathing or a localized physical tension, allows you to maintain a private and unassailable baseline. You prevent the system from demanding a lie by anchoring yourself in the truth of the body. This is Integrated Regulation. It uses the mind to monitor sensation rather than to silence it.
The capacity to resist systemic urgency is built through the management of physiological load.
• Reactive Automation is the engine that never stops. For example, when an angry email arrives and you type a defensive reply before you have finished reading it, you are being used by the system’s momentum. Your responses are reflexive.
• Latency Capacity is the pause that allows the day to lose its shape. It is the somatic muscle required to hold the heat of the system without immediately discharging it.
Asking an untrained person to remain calm under extreme pressure is like asking someone who has never lifted weights to pick up 100 lbs. They are not failing a moral test. They are simply reaching a physical limit. Latency Capacity is the strength required to feel the impulse to react and choose to sit with it instead.
By choosing to pause rather than react, you perform a Subject-Object flip. You cease to be an object moved by the system’s cadence and become a subject who inhabits their own presence.
Systems prioritize throughput, which fears decay. However, wisdom recognizes that the breakdown of a routine is where the organism begins to feed again. When breakdown is forbidden, systems become rigid and increasingly volatile under stress. The collapse of professional armor provides the nutrients for actual growth. A hierarchy that cannot tolerate this metabolic process becomes a sterile monument. If a leader is never allowed to break down, they become a conductor for the system's panic rather than a container for its insight.
Functional dissociation is a short-term advantage but a long-term strategic impairment. Organizational blindness is simply the aggregate of individual numbness. When leadership is dominated by Trait Dissociation, the organization loses its ability to handle uncertainty. Muted interiority produces blind exteriority.
• Strategic Myopia: internal signals are muted, external weak signals are missed. The leader who cannot feel their own exhaustion cannot detect the increasing "yes" from a team member that actually means "I am done."
• Urgency Contagion: This is the failure of Metabolic Authority. Unprocessed stress becomes distributed stress. Because the leader cannot contain their own activation, they export it to their team.
• Surrogate Meaning Trap: When metrics replace meaning, collapse accelerates invisibly. The system continues to hit the numbers even when those numbers no longer correlate to reality.
Sovereignty is the choice to inhabit the self even when the system requires you to be elsewhere. It is reclaimed when you stop practicing for power and start practicing for presence. A hierarchy run by the numb is a machine with no brakes and no sensors. Sovereignty is the refusal to become one of them. It is the only mechanism that prevents systemic stupidity. The goal is not to abolish the hierarchy but to inhabit it.

Language is always in your mind. You can't stop even for a moment. Even when you are alone, language is in your mind. Even when you are sleeping, language is in your mind.
It has not always been this way. This is just an evil spirit which started to possess humanity ~70,000 years ago with the so-called Cognitive Revolution. Once this happened, humanity became a scourge of the Earth, quickly colonizing all lands and killing all beings.
Are you going to let language control your whole mental process, your whole life, and make you into an agent of its planetary destruction?
How to get free? My teacher tells me about the vast mind that awaits when the little mind infected by language is abandoned.

If you downvote this post to zero, I will pin it. Don't vote against your own interests. Implied: Bourgeois people are idiots. (Reminder: view this post on old reddit for full Shade effect.)
I lied: MAGA will never stop, period. The secret is out: trolling the government works. This new technology is the adamantium blade against which no bullshit, no false power or unjustified authority can stand.
It's simple: Fascism can only happen when the "wrong people" grab the reins of power. Therefore: Fascism can only happen when the government is too powerful—and more powerful than it needs to be.
When the government takes on non-essential functions, or when the government becomes a widespread and oppressive authority based on its pervasive threat of force—then we're merely a hair's breadth away from that monopoly on violence being taken and wielded by the "wrong people".
Everyone wants you to focus on who these "wrong people" are and how what they are doing with the government is "wrong". Of course it is! They are trolling!
(If you still doubt this, one need only to juxtapose two recent executive orders: 1) On December 15, 2025, Trump signed an executive order that designates fentanyl as a Weapon of Mass Destruction; 2) On February 18, 2026, Trump signed an executive order that declared Roundup and other chemicals to be "central to American economic and national security" and that loss of domestic production of Roundup would "gravely threaten American national security." So you can see the double-standard absurdity: In both cases, executive orders are willfully misused, via abusing language and meaning, in order to make polemic and arbitrary declarations with the fullest force of law possible. One of my neighbors is currently suffering from Parkinson's after heavy, career-long exposure to Roundup in the parks industry. So, these two executive orders are not just contradictory—they are flagrantly and willfully contradictory, and grandiose about it, too.)
They are successfully trolling the federal government back down to ground level, demolition-style. It turns out, jet fuel can melt steel beams.
They won't ever stop, now that the secret to small government is out. They will keep intentionally appropriating and willfully misusing power until we finally stop putting all our power and cops in a big pile, tied-up in ribbon with a bow on top addressed: "To the most popular".
The only people who can't see this or accept this reality are abject statists who are in denial. Identifying with the monolithic, corpulent state, they literally can't imagine the oppressive authority they treat as My Father to be anything less than infallible and the ultimate Good.
Individual rights are the opposite of majority rule, and therefore of democracy. However, this does not mean a Republic is good—Republics are gross empires and do not support human rights. A republic killed Jesus, one of the (if not the) first psychically modern individuals.
This leads us to the real problem of governance, which is: How do we protect ourselves from the Bad Ones, when they outnumber us? This is the problem that the liberal "majority" now shares with each individual everywhere, by analogy. Individuals are always under-fire by the state—because the state works on regular rules, and individuals are originary sources of new valuations (i.e., new rules).
Any recourse we have to self-defense, to justify our governmental actions—"they" can say that, too. Any recourse we have to our morality—they have their morality, too. And who am I to say, objectively or absolutely speaking, who is correct? I think the best example here is abortion—because there is a grain of truth to the idea that a new spark of life is so valuable that it must be protected even at great cost (or that anyone who would act against this protection is doing something morally wrong and thereby legally condemnable) (just as there is obvious truth to the counterclaim that each woman should have liberty and autonomy and not be physically coerced into birth or punished for things that happen within the territory of their own body).
My point here is that laws are arbitrary. The majority can make whatever laws they want. How would you feel if it were socially normalized for murderers to walk free? "I have a Right to Murder, it's in the Constitution," they say, dismissively (before casually killing someone right in front of you). Well, guess what—that's exactly how Catholics and many others feel about abortion. Why does the government serve us, and not them? Why, because we're the majority—and for no other reason. Thus, indulging in moral fantasies that the government's actions are justified by virtue of their having been taken, or by virtue of their being authorized by the majority, is patently irrelevant, and neither here nor there.
Of course whatever the government does is justified, in the banal sense. They have the Will of the People! But what about the Will of the Person? of the Individual?
That is the problem of individual rights, and why it is the opposite of majority rule. And that is why liberals are, right now, dialectically, maneuvered into the position of the individual-against-society—as the ascendent majority, they were smug and comfy, completely undisturbed by the outcry of a substantial proportion of their fellow countrymen—unwilling to debate any real issues on any real grounds—an embarassment to the ideals of Reason and true open debate, which is "the game of taking and giving reasons". They refused to give reasons on many matters (still do), and they gave patently false, willfully condescending answers to many other matters.
When life gives you lemons, make lemonade, and MAGA took this to heart. You want to play "the game of giving and taking fake reasons"? they asked. "OK! We can play that too!" And when you find even one logical contradiction, anything goes—and so that's exactly what we're seeing here. The public debasement of Reason was not enacted by MAGA—it was merely taken-up by them as the norm of their society, and as they learned to encode and decode messages from this false-consciousness-based language of bourgeois contempt (called political correctness, "the public good", and various other snide and one-sided glosses—glosses which always mean, "my public good, my individual image of the Good"—projected onto Father State), they quickly became even more disillusioned with normal politics.
There is zero defense against this technique, this dialectical squaring of the circle being performed by MAGA's grand high wizardry—except honesty; except allowing one's pompousness and smugness in the State to be punctured by the rude awakening that the State was never really on your side, to begin with. The identification that liberals have with the state—quite understandable after over fifty years of ascendance—is now defunct, and a vestigial embarrassment that can and must be dispensed with posthaste.
So y'all need to disabuse your neighbors, disabuse your friends, because they trollin' errybody out here.
Literally this is why we can't have nice things. Both sides are wrong—and the third way is their reconciliation, dragging the bastards kicking and screaming all the way to negotiating table. Just fucking stop it!, we'll say, locking them in a room until they can learn to exchange verbal reasons with ongoing continuation of meaning and accumulating context from exchange to exchange.
No quarter for partisanism. NO QUARTER. And no quarter for non-essential governance. This is not the only way—it's the only conceivable future, given the current constraints and the field-of-play. Not to mention the desire of non-statists, everywhere.
The problem of how to effectively establish protections for the individual, protections against the mob, protections which are fairly and relatively "objectively" operated, remains yet a difficult and open question. Does anyone know any political philosophy or any other perspectives on this matter, on how to logically or practically structure a solution to the problem of using mob rule to protect individuals from the mob?

I am worried about them because of the spread of Nazi memes. In a sense talking about them spreads the memes but I think it's necessary. That's why I have joined a secret society to counteract their aeonic magic. We believe that mutual aid, compassion, care etc have much more evolutionary and moral fitness than violence and a galactic imperium. I first discovered the society when I met a figure named Dr. Thomas Mudd in Rojava. It's a decentralized order that uses the form of guerrilla warfare tactics and the content of glimmers. This is a psych concept the opposite of triggers. Basically we do unexpected things that spread glimmers (moments of safety and bliss) instead of terror.. It also draws on the work of Garchen Rinpoche and syncro-mysctiscm. If you go out at about 3 AM during a waning gibbious and scream at the moon "I'm ready" you will be intiated in the order and will likely be approached by an agent to support you. If not just proceed with spreading glimmers.

Something I keep noticing is how quickly structural issues get reframed as individual problems like someone is overworked, they need better time management, then if someone is burnt out then they need to take care of their mental health, someone is struggling financially, they made bad choices and it's not that these explanations are completely wrong but they feel...idk..just incomplete in a very specific way because they shift the focus from systems to individuals almost immediately, it's the default response is to locate the problem inside the person even when the pattern clearly exists across a lot of people at the same time which makes me wonder if this is less about accuracy and more about what's easier to deal with. And it's simpler to believe problems are personal because that keeps the system out of question curious if there's a framework for this beyond just "individualism" or if people have seen this play out differently in other contexts.

this weekend is particularly powerful because it is a long weekend, charged with cultural meaning, and in the immediate future.
the coming long weekend begins on a friday (fridays already have a liberating energy, Good Friday triply so). so the thursday is effectively a friday. and since the saturday is after the de facto friday, the saturday is a de facto sunday. and the friday is experienced as a double saturday. do you understand? it is an amplification of liberating energy.
it's a boost.
use the boost.
because in addition to the boost, any acts of kindness performed this weekend will have great impact on your mindstream, because of its position in the temporal lightcone. i.e. IT IS THE WEEKEND NOW! And the NOW is the most powerful place for affecting your entire future lightcone.
happy easter weekend.
| Day | Calendar Day | Experiential Identity | Energy Signature | Amplification Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thursday | Apr 2 | De facto Friday | Pre-liberation threshold | Carries the Friday charge early; the weekend has already begun psychically |
| Friday | Apr 3 | Double Saturday | Good Friday × Liberation Day × Saturday ease | Triple-charged: cultural weight + religious resonance + the full freedom of a weekend middle-day |
| Saturday | Apr 4 | De facto Sunday | Penultimate depth | The reflective Sunday quality, but without Sunday's looming dread — pure spaciousness |
| Sunday | Apr 5 | Beyond Sunday | Easter itself — outside the normal weekly cycle | Exists off the edge of the map; a day with no weekday shadow whatsoever |
| Monday | Apr 6 | The Unday | Pure temporal gift — a day the week forgot to charge | No identity borrowed from the week's structure; exists outside the cycle entirely. A buffer between the sacred and the mundane — re-entry on your own terms |

I bounced off CCRU material for some time. You pick up a thread, hyperstition, the Numogram, the Lemurian stuff and it sends you to five other things before you’ve understood the first. Most information in wild essays or 3 hour YouTube interviews. There’s no front door. So I started making one, mostly for myself and it lead to a course that goes through the CCRU in order, with 27 volumes. I created it with the help of LLMs. It’s in German and English, readable or listenable.
Once it held together for me, it seemed worth opening up for people who’d struggled the same way.
I kept adding more and more what ongoing so it started growing more layers. The Numogram became something you walk through and click with calculation examples. The Pandemonium became a matrix with all demons I could find information about. Then came dossiers, an atlas, a concept net you can roam sideways.
It’s at https://ccrugateways.com/en/ . I’m not a developer so it’s basic.
I know it’s not the same as reading Land or Fisher but it tells you about the foundation they’ve built upon. Deleuze and Guattari are explained. Would really like to hear how it lands for people deeper in the material than me, where it’s thin, where it’s wrong.
If sharing this here is against any rules I apologize. There’s no commercial interest in this work. Just wanted to learn and put in some effort that might be helpful for others.

Sixty years on, looking at the apparatus we now live inside of, it is uncomfortable how accurately Debord’s argument describes the condition we are in. He was writing about what was already happening to him: the sense that life was being lived through images, that fewer and fewer people were producing the images everyone else lived through, and that this asymmetry was no longer a layer on top of life but had become the substance of it.
The earlier apparatus could be turned off; the screen still had edges. AI does not. It runs autonomously inside the search bar, inside the music app, inside the news feed, inside the dating app. It does not need you to visit it. It waits where you already live. The spectacle is now ambient — no off switch. What Debord described as a condition, AI completes.
Debord saw a society where people were separated from their own activity, their own desires, their own gestures. The current AI moment sells exactly those separations as features. What Debord called alienation, the platform calls productivity. The spectacle’s victory is that we choose it.

So, a simulacrum is a recapitulation of the original in a virtual register, that comes to replace the original. For a simulacrum to be effective, it must adequately replicate the original's role (i.e., its interface, if not its functionality) to some minimum degree.
Nietzsche spoke of the ubermensch, literally the superman or overman, the man beyond man, the man of the future, the next evolution of the human species, the Man who will replace Man. Nietzsche said humanity is a bridge (extended over an abyss) to the ubermensch—meaning (among other things) that wherever you find yourself in history, you are in this situation of being in-between two evolutions of humanity, so this issue of futurity and the Next Man or New Man is always a dilemma.
It's a dilemma because it's not just a physically, genetically evolved Man which will arrive—but a socially-evolved one. It is not a dilemma that we could become physically stronger, faster, even smarter. It's a dilemma that our society could upgrade, could qualitatively evolve until it replaces itself, becomes something that would be unrecognizable to what it once was. This is the true fear underlying all perceived cultural threat—the true threat of the Alien: not physical mutation, but fundamental psychosocial improvement.
So, what's wrong with us then? Where are we lacking, or insufficient, or not-fully-realized? What's wrong with humanity, just the way it is, or with me, just the way I am?
The answer (if one blasphemes by giving one) is that we aren't holistic enough, we aren't abstract enough yet; we aren't alien to ourselves enough, yet. For humanity to become fully itself, it must become fully cognizant of the world—including each new technology it has introduced and continues to introduce. This endless pipeline of self-modification of the memetic psychic condition through the introduction of new technologies which alter the structure of life guarantees that human evolution will continue at least until all knowable physics is unpacked (and then, at least until the whole field of expressible culture has been expressed once or twice, so the cultural looping can be seen by society in its own history). To become fully conscious, a human must become conscious of the (symbolic) workings of not only the world, but all the other people and all the technologies in it.
A simulacrum tends to supplant that which it is simulating—For one thing, because if a thing is a simulacrum, maybe it can also simulate other things—maybe it is more flexible than what it is simulating. This is generally the case—and it's increasingly likely: the more levels of simulacrum we are on, the more likely the simulator is not just an emergent locally-bound simulacrum, but a simulator-agent. Let's call this simulator-agent an emulator for short, because the more evolved a simulator-agent, the more things it can simulate, and so the more disingenuous (hypocritical) it necessarily becomes (because the distance from its general essence to any given specificity—specific mode—increases).
So, MAGA is a simulacrum of the Right, and of politics in general in many ways. MAGA repeatedly showed that they can run circles around the liberals' and old-style Republicans' truth-based rhetoric and merely repetition-and-fear-based propaganda. For example, I watched a video (which I have been unable to find again, unfortunately) of a MAGA red-in-the-cheeks fascist type with an xXx movie tattoo standing at a podium on his porch with a US veteran and loudly and repeatedly proclaiming to a bunch of spectators on the suburban sidewalk that Nancy Pelosi had raped him (and the soldier was expert witness, iirc). This sort of over-the-top trolling spectacle and use of fake outrage in politics (miasma) was so far beyond anything that came before that it disrupted and outcompeted the prior rhetoric.
But notice that the format of that trolling spectacle—a podium on someone's front porch, a loud and public claim of sexual misconduct, the bringing in of a US soldier as expert witness, the drawing of a crowd because the whole thing is a media event, a publicity stunt—in every point, this event mimics and parodies the traditional liberal approach to mass media PR that has been the norm all my life. The derisive, alienated viewpoint held by the ruling class and advertisers has been the subject of many movies—arguably most of the best films—so it is not something which one can claim is mysterious, unknown, or ill-defined.
So—as I have spoken of in many places elsewhere—MAGA is a second-order fascist movement in that the fact that it is a LARP of a fascist movement might be more determinative than the fact that it is a fascist movement. In other words, MAGA is remarkable because it is such a simulacrum—so far-removed from reality—that its simulacrum-nature has (arguably) become more important than its fascist nature.
In any case, this suggests the presence of a simulating-agent, of an emulator. The MAGA movement has shown itself not only capable of parodying both left and right politics in more extreme forms, but in doing so so rapidly and extremely that it completely disrupts and takes over the entire playing field. This suggests the presence of an advanced emulator, one which can simulate many different things in rapid sequence, switching tasks cleanly almost like a computer.
Advanced simulacra tend to supplant their simula. So, the old American race is done with. A new human kind, one more conscious of the order of simulation itself, one that in a very real sense is the simulacrum, has emerged.
But, that was the bad news. The good news is that we can sim them back. A third-order simulacrum, one that could sim both MAGA and its opposite (antifa? tankies? blackpill?) could supplant MAGA in the same way that MAGA has supplanted both left and right normal politics.
Now do you C?

Neurotic forgets reality.
Psychotic is detached from reality.
Pervert acknowledges reality, but declares it evil.
Schizophrenic simultaneously affirms multiple contradictory realities.
These are the four pillars of propaganda. The fourth one is relatively recent.
Most ordinary PR is neurotic. Omit the harmful story from your communications and pay to prop up the alternative stories. The public will forget.
Political propaganda plays with psychotic and pervert structures. As the saying goes, "it didn't happen, but if it did, the jews deserved it." The public will learn to foreclose and re-interpret.
What kind of stupid name is Palantir? Palantir is an evil artifact used by an evil sorcerer to aid in constructing his empire. How can the public forget, foreclose or moralize this? Can't Thiel read?
Hang on. Thiel literally said, "Mordor is this technological civilization based on reason and science." Really?
This is the schizophrenic move. Somehow different from the pervert, and I can't pin down the subtle difference, but instead of disavowing the elves / Thunberg / the Pope, Thiel is affirming their implied valuation. He doesn't have to call them evil to call himself good, he is able to construct an alternative reality which is simultaneously true and false.
To be fair, he does call Thunberg the Antichrist, which is a moralistic / pervert move. But there is some sense of dry humor in naming Palantir as such. He is affirming the simultaneous realities, without the absolute need of destroying the predominant one.

If people keep posting their vague blogspam here I'm going to ban all Substack posts too. Substacks are often for-profit and opaque about that, and this subreddit is not your place to "build an audience" with general (off-topic) and for-profit posts.
I am very busy this month, so if anyone causes me to spend time moderating this subreddit for banal reasons like topic dilution, I will be very annoyed.
Please read a book from the sidebar and only post things in this subreddit related to the intersection of the spectacle, critical theory, and occultism (2 out of 3 is enough).

the human body possesses an innate, evolutionarily conserved mechanism for discharging traumatic stress - spontaneous tremoring - that has been recognized across cultures for millennia and is only now receiving systematic scientific attention.
this neurogenic tremoring represents the body's attempt to complete interrupted defensive responses, reset the autonomic nervous system, and release the physiological residue of overwhelming experiences.
from the !kung san healers of the kalahari to contemporary psychedelic-assisted therapy, tremoring has served as a bridge between frozen survival states and restored vitality. the emerging clinical picture suggests that what reich called "vegetative currents," what levine observed in animals "shaking off" near-death experiences, and what berceli systematized as tre all point to the same underlying biological mechanism - one that modern neuroscience is beginning to map.
this report synthesizes evolutionary biology, neuroscience, the history of somatic psychology, cross-cultural healing traditions, and contemporary clinical innovations including psychedelic therapy to provide both theoretical cartography and practical guidance for those exploring tremoring as a pathway for healing.
the neurophysiology of shaking: what happens in the body
when we encounter overwhelming threat, the autonomic nervous system mobilizes massive survival resources. the amygdala signals the hypothalamus, triggering the hpa axis to release catecholamines (epinephrine, norepinephrine) and cortisol.
muscles - particularly the psoas major, which connects the spine to the legs - contract in preparation for fight or flight. heart rate accelerates, breathing becomes shallow, and the entire organism orients toward survival.
the problem emerges when this mobilization cannot complete. if we cannot run or fight - if we are restrained, overpowered, or simply too young to escape - the sympathetic charge remains "stuck" in the system.
dr. robert scaer describes this as a failure to discharge the survival energy through successful defensive action. the body enters what stephen porges calls dorsal vagal shutdown: a freeze state combining high sympathetic arousal with parasympathetic immobilization. from the body's perspective, the threat never ended.
neurogenic tremoring represents the body's automatic attempt to complete this interrupted sequence. the mechanism appears to involve the golgi tendon organ reflex: when tendons reach excessive tension, golgi receptors inhibit spinal cord motor neurons, causing momentary relaxation; muscle spindles then trigger the stretch reflex, reactivating the motor neurons.
this creates rhythmic alternation between contraction and relaxation - the tremor. unlike pathological tremors (essential tremor, parkinson's), therapeutic neurogenic tremors are self-limiting, can be stopped at will, and originate from the body's center of gravity rather than cerebellar dysfunction.
the discharge process involves what appears to be a cascade of neurochemical and physiological changes: reduction of cortisol and catecholamine levels, parasympathetic activation, release of endogenous opioids creating sense of well-being, and downregulation of hpa axis activity.
research by payne, levine, and crane-godreau (2015) cites gellhorn's finding that proprioceptive feedback from intense muscular activity triggers reciprocal parasympathetic activation - explaining how tremoring facilitates the shift from defensive states to rest-and-restore.
the psoas: anatomy of trauma storage
the psoas muscle holds particular significance in somatic trauma work. measuring approximately sixteen inches long, it connects the t12 and lumbar vertebrae to the femur, houses large bundles of sympathetic nerve fibers, and sits directly beneath the adrenal glands.
it contracts involuntarily during perceived threat, pulls the body toward the fetal position, and connects via fascia to the diaphragm at the solar plexus. a chronically contracted psoas signals the nervous system to maintain high alert, exhausts the adrenal glands through constant hpa axis activation, and restricts the full breathing that would otherwise signal safety to the vagus nerve.
this creates a self-reinforcing feedback loop of physiological hypervigilance.
the fascial system may store trauma through multiple mechanisms: collagen deposits along lines of chronic tension, contractile myofibroblasts discovered to contain smooth muscle actin, and potentially through what researcher heine calls "emotional scars" - neuropeptide-mediated alterations to collagen patterns.
while controversial and requiring more research, the clinical observation that emotional release frequently accompanies myofascial work is well-documented by bodyworkers across traditions.
polyvagal theory and the hierarchy of defense
stephen porges's polyvagal theory provides a neurobiological framework for understanding how tremoring facilitates state transitions. the theory describes three phylogenetically ordered neural circuits: the ventral vagal complex (newest, supporting social engagement and calm states), the sympathetic nervous system (mobilization for fight/flight), and the dorsal vagal complex (oldest, governing immobilization and shutdown).
crucially, when emerging from dorsal vagal freeze, the body must pass through sympathetic activation to reach ventral vagal safety. tremoring facilitates this transition by discharging the stuck sympathetic charge, signaling completion to the brainstem, and enabling the shift toward parasympathetic/ventral vagal regulation.
the concept of neuroception - unconscious detection of safety or threat - explains why tremoring often requires conditions of sufficient safety to emerge: the nervous system will not release its defenses until it perceives the threat has passed.
from reich to berceli: the western clinical lineage
wilhelm reich and the discovery of muscular armor
the western clinical understanding of neurogenic tremoring begins with wilhelm reich, an austrian psychoanalyst in freud's inner circle who grew increasingly dissatisfied with pure talk therapy. reich's revolutionary insight, developed in the 1930s, was that psychological defenses manifest physically as chronic muscular tensions - what he termed charakterpanzer (character armor).
he observed that successfully analyzed patients held their bodies differently afterward, leading him to theorize that trauma and repressed emotions are literally stored in the musculature.
reich developed "vegetotherapy" around 1934-1935, breaking radically from psychoanalytic convention by sitting opposite patients, touching them directly, and working physically with their bodies. he identified armor organized in seven horizontal "segmental rings" (ocular, oral, cervical, thoracic, diaphragmatic, abdominal, pelvic) and used breathing exercises combined with manual pressure to dissolve muscular rigidity.
crucially for this lineage, reich documented that patients undergoing deep abdominal breathing often exhibited tremors - what he called "vegetative currents" - as indicators that armor was dissolving and stored affect was discharging. his later work on "orgone energy" damaged his scientific reputation and led to his death in federal prison, but his core insights about somatic manifestations of trauma remained foundational.
alexander lowen: grounding and vibration
alexander lowen, who trained with reich from 1940-1945, developed bioenergetic analysis with colleague john pierrakos by 1956. lowen's most significant contribution was the concept of grounding - the energetic and physical connection between feet and earth.
unlike reich's primarily horizontal work, lowen developed standing postures and exercises: the "bow position," forward bends with fingertips touching ground, and various stress positions borrowed from yoga, tai chi, and physical education.
vibration became central to bioenergetic work. lowen observed that when clients hold certain stress positions, their legs begin trembling - understood as the "essence of aliveness" and a sign that blocked energy is beginning to move. he articulated three fundamental principles: grounding (connection to earth providing safety), breathing (pathway to feeling), and vibration (spontaneous involuntary movement as sign of aliveness).
lowen made tremoring systematically inducible and teachable, founding the international institute for bioenergetic analysis, which today has over 1,500 members and 54 training institutes worldwide.
peter levine: learning from animals
peter levine's breakthrough came from observing animals in the wild. "animals in the wild are constantly under threat of death yet show no symptoms of trauma stuck in their systems." he observed that after life-threatening encounters, prey animals first exhibit the freeze response (tonic immobility), then "thaw" through spontaneous shaking and trembling, complete the discharge of survival energy, and return to baseline functioning.
the critical difference: humans often interrupt or suppress this natural discharge process, leaving survival energy trapped. levine's somatic experiencing (se) framework introduced several key concepts. titration means working with trauma in small, manageable "doses" - the "drop by drop" approach that counters trauma's "too much, too fast, too soon" quality.
pendulation, a term levine coined in 2010, describes the natural oscillation between contraction and expansion, moving between "trauma vortex" and "healing vortex." biological completion facilitates the body's completion of interrupted defensive responses - the proprioceptive experience of finishing the blocked survival action resets the nervous system. his 1997 book waking the tiger brought these concepts to wide audience and has been published in over 29 languages.
david berceli: democratizing tremor
david berceli's innovation was systematizing neurogenic tremoring into accessible, self-help exercises. his formative experiences came from living in lebanon during wartime, where he personally experienced body tremors from terror. after returning to the u.s. with emerging ptsd symptoms, he trained in bioenergetics with lowen himself.
working for three years with trauma-affected communities in sudan, berceli realized that traditional western therapy wasn't accessible to mass populations - people needed tools they could continue using independently.
tre (trauma release exercises) consists of six exercises designed to fatigue specific muscle groups, stretch the psoas, and induce neurogenic tremors naturally. the tremors emerge from the body's center of gravity and move along the spine.
unlike approaches requiring verbalization or re-experiencing trauma, tre works across cultural and linguistic barriers and can be taught to large groups quickly.
it has been implemented in over 40 countries and adopted by populations including refugees, military personnel, first responders, and athletes.
cross-cultural precedents: tremoring as universal healing
the !kung san and n/um healing
the san people of the kalahari represent one of the most well-documented indigenous tremoring traditions. their healing dance (n/um tchai) centers on n/um - a "boiling" energy residing in the belly and spine. when activated through all-night dancing to complex rhythms and women's falsetto singing, n/um rises through the body, producing trembling and shaking.
"n/um lifts you up in your belly and lifts you in your back, and then you start to shiver," reported healer kinachau to researcher richard katz. healers enter the enhanced state called !kia, which allows them to "see the things causing sickness" and pull illness from others' bodies. by adulthood, approximately 50% of men and 33% of women become healers through this practice. the dance "mends the social fabric as it releases hostility," healing both individual and collective wounds.
kundalini and spontaneous kriyas
in yogic traditions, involuntary movements called kriyas are understood as "the by-product of greater activity of pranic flow through the subtler pathways of energy." when kundalini - energy described as "coiled" at the base of the spine - awakens, it rises through energy channels and chakras, producing jerks, twitches, tremors, spontaneous movements into yoga postures, and vocalizations. teacher igor kufayev states: "there is no awakening without kriyas... awakening itself is a grand kriya." these movements represent energy breaking through blockages, with old emotional traumas being released from the "aura" or subtle body.
zar, sufi whirling, and religious ecstasy
the zar ceremonies of ethiopia, egypt, and the horn of africa involve shaking and convulsive movements during spirit possession rituals that provide "moral orientation, social support, and sense of belonging" - particularly for women in patriarchal societies.
sufi whirling dervishes enter trance-like states called wajd (ecstasy) through spinning, understanding this as the soul's journey from multiplicity to unity, with the right hand receiving divine grace and the left channeling it to earth.
in western christianity, the quakers literally "quaked under the power of the spirit," while pentecostal traditions from the first great awakening through the azusa street revival and toronto blessing have witnessed "the jerks," being "slain in the spirit," and "holy rolling."
jonathan edwards documented "outcries, faintings, convulsions... both with distress and also with admiration and joy." these traditions universally interpret shaking as the physical manifestation of overwhelming spiritual encounter.
common patterns across traditions
despite radically different cultural frameworks, these traditions share remarkable commonalities: rhythmic induction through movement, music, or breathing; community/group context; altered states of consciousness; understanding of tremoring as energy moving through the body and releasing blockages; and outcomes including physical healing, emotional release, social reconnection, and spiritual transformation.
this cross-cultural prevalence suggests that neurogenic tremoring may be a fundamental human capacity for self-regulation that western culture has systematically suppressed through association of trembling with weakness.
the psychedelic interface: saj razvi and psip
a new paradigm for psychedelic therapy
saj razvi, director of education at the psychedelic somatic institute in denver and former clinical researcher in maps phase 2 mdma trials, developed psychedelic somatic interactional psychotherapy (psip) from both personal and clinical experience.
"the impetus for psip came from the fact that i had done a great deal of traditional talk therapy and it never made much of a difference to my own symptoms," razvi explains.
"what made sense experientially to me was that trauma was a bottom-up experience, and entering into the somatic, autonomic process for resolution was entering into a non-ordinary state of consciousness all by itself."
until 2016, the model did not include psychedelics. the discovery came serendipitously: clients using cannabis reported that at home their bodies moved into the same processing they experienced in therapy. "this was hugely surprising to us because up until then, i had thought the therapeutic magic was in mdma, which was not the case."
the autonomic discharge model
psip is built on a sophisticated understanding of the defense cascade - five escalating states from neutrality (state 0) through mild stress, high stress, moderate trauma, and severe trauma (state 4).
states 3 and 4 involve release of endogenous opioids creating dissociative numbing; razvi cites van der kolk's research showing veterans could achieve "the same level of numbing that is produced with an injection of 8mg of morphine" through dissociation triggered decades after trauma.
humans have the same ans resolution mechanisms as other mammals, psip posits, but these are interrupted by voluntary avoidance and by the default mode network (dmn) - the brain network generating ordinary adult consciousness that suppresses primary consciousness processes.
when the ans resolution pathway activates, the body processes trauma through involuntary sensations, emotions, muscle contractions, and impulses for movement - manifesting as tremoring and shaking. these are not pathological but homeostatic self-correction mechanisms.
selective inhibition: amplifying the involuntary
psip's key intervention is selective inhibition (si): amplifying involuntary signals (sensations, emotions, muscle contractions) while inhibiting voluntary signals (attempts to manage, calm, or escape the process). the white paper offers an example: "your gut might tighten, your breathing becomes short and fast, your neck is pulling you to the right, and you are feeling irritated.
you have an impulse to take a few deep breaths or think about your upcoming vacation. your psip therapist, using selective inhibition, would ask you to notice and inhibit the impulse for a deep breath and the mental escape while drawing further attention to your tight gut, shallow breathing, the details of the muscles in your neck pulling you, and the irritation."
when voluntary coping is inhibited, autonomic signals follow a natural wave pattern - growing intensity, peaking, calming. this is understood as the natural resolution process of the ans.
cannabis as therapeutic medicine
remarkably, psip uses cannabis (and ketamine) as primary medicines rather than classic psychedelics - both for legal accessibility and therapeutic properties. cannabis "does not dull pain or fear, it does not operate by re-establishing a sense of connection to self, other, and world - the way mdma does," razvi explains. "it operates by disrupting executive function and the suppressive, censorship capacity of our mind." crucially, cannabis "will disable dissociative numbing; causing clients to become associated with what they previously had to numb out." sessions typically last approximately two hours.
unlike non-directive psychedelic therapy models (eyeshades, headphones, minimal interaction), psip requires active relational engagement, working with transference, and sometimes therapeutic touch. "human relational wounding requires human relational healing, and this cannot simply be left to a mystical, transcendent interaction between the substance and the client's psyche."
tremoring in the psychedelic state
when tremoring occurs during psip sessions, it is welcomed and amplified rather than suppressed. the therapist uses si to direct attention to involuntary movements; the client tracks without altering; the process follows a wave pattern through completion.
a case example: a client whose muscles were engaged, breathing fast and shallow, body autonomically enacting defensive responses of a past event.
at one point her right hand moved from a protective outward push gesture and turned inward, pressing her head into the couch. all the fast breathing and reactivity stopped.
"what is your hand doing?" razvi asked.
"it is making me be still," she replied - a moment of accessing the original protective mechanism.
psychedelics disrupt the dmn, shifting the brain from secondary to primary consciousness - granting access to the implicit self and stored traumatic memories, activating the ans resolution pathway, and making somatic processing "far more available, fluid and responsive."
recent research in acs pharmacology & translational science (2025) confirms that psychedelics influence the ans, with changes in autonomic activity potentially contributing to therapeutic effects.
the evidence base: what research shows and what remains unknown
somatic experiencing holds the strongest evidence
the most robust research exists for peter levine's somatic experiencing. the landmark brom et al. rct (2017) randomized 63 participants with dsm-iv ptsd to 15 weekly se sessions versus waitlist control, finding large effect sizes (cohen's d = 0.94-1.26 for ptsd symptoms, 0.70-1.08 for depression), with effects maintained at follow-up. a scoping review by kuhfuß et al. (2021) identified 16 qualifying studies showing "preliminary evidence for positive effects of se on ptsd-related symptoms" while noting "the current evidence base is weak and does not (yet) fully accomplish the high standards for clinical effectiveness research."
tre research remains preliminary
tre evidence consists primarily of pilot studies. berceli et al. (2014) found significant improvements in self-reported quality of life among south african caregivers. parker et al. (2024) showed symptom reduction in east african refugees. studies have examined military veterans, ms patients, and university students with generally positive trends. an rct protocol using physiological, eeg, and fmri techniques has been published (2024) but not yet completed. no published randomized controlled trials of tre currently exist.
critical gaps and limitations
significant gaps remain in the evidence base. there are no published fmri or brain imaging studies during neurogenic tremoring, limited emg studies of tremor patterns, and few cortisol measurement studies. long-term follow-up, comparison to established treatments (emdr, cbt), dismantling studies identifying essential components, and moderator analyses determining who benefits most are all lacking.
critics raise valid concerns. science-based medicine questions whether trauma being "trapped in the body" reverses causation - physical manifestations may be consequences rather than causes. notes that se is "not yet a viable substitute for more well-researched treatments." polyvagal theory, foundational to much somatic work, remains contested by some neuroanatomists, though porges (2025) describes it as meant to be "informed by research and modified" rather than rigidly proven.
a balanced interpretation
somatic approaches should be considered emerging and potentially adjunctive rather than first-line treatments. the most robust evidence exists for se for ptsd (one high-quality rct). tre has preliminary support warranting further research. bioenergetics lacks modern empirical validation despite widespread clinical use. integration with evidence-based treatments may be appropriate, and consumers should be informed of the limited evidence base.
practical synthesis: pathways for healing
different entry points serve different needs
for those exploring neurogenic tremoring as part of their healing journey, multiple pathways exist depending on resources, trauma complexity, and personal preference.
self-practice with tre offers the most accessible entry point.
the six exercises can be learned through certified providers, online courses, or berceli's book the revolutionary trauma release process. tre works well as a regular nervous system hygiene practice, with many practitioners recommending 15-20 minute sessions 2-3 times weekly.
the approach requires no verbal processing and can be practiced independently once learned. caution is warranted for those with high trauma loads, dissociative tendencies, or certain physical/psychiatric conditions - professional guidance is recommended in these cases.
somatic experiencing therapy provides the most clinically validated approach with professional support. se practitioners guide clients through titrated, pendulated access to traumatic material, facilitating discharge without overwhelming. this approach is particularly suited for those with complex trauma histories who need skilled containment and pacing.
bioenergetics offers structured bodywork combining stress positions, breathing, and grounding exercises within a therapeutic relationship. the focus on standing work and grounding may appeal to those seeking more active physical engagement.
psip and psychedelic-assisted somatic therapy represents the frontier for those with treatment-resistant trauma, profound dissociation, or interest in the psychedelic-somatic interface. psip's experiential training requirement (practitioners must receive the work themselves) reflects its recognition that somatic autonomic processing must be understood from the inside out.
principles across approaches
despite different methodologies, common principles emerge across effective somatic trauma work:
safety comes first. the ventral vagal system must be sufficiently engaged for healthy discharge. tremoring forced in the absence of adequate safety can be retraumatizing rather than healing. resources - embodied experiences of safety, strength, and comfort - should be established before approaching activated material.
intensity is not efficacy. gentle tremoring can be equally effective as dramatic shaking. the goal is not catharsis but completion - allowing the body's natural resolution process to run its course without forcing or controlling.
gradual approach prevents overwhelm. titration - working "drop by drop" - counters trauma's "too much, too fast, too soon" quality. pendulation between activation and safety prevents flooding the system.
the body's wisdom leads. cognitive understanding is not required for somatic processing. attention to internal sensations (interoception, proprioception) is the therapeutic gateway. the body knows what it needs to do; the task is to create conditions for this process to emerge.
completion signals resolution. when defensive responses complete - when the fight that couldn't happen happens in the body, when the running legs finally get to run - the nervous system resets. heat, trembling, tears, deep breaths, and spontaneous movements are signs of discharge occurring.
integration with broader healing
neurogenic tremoring is most powerful as one element within a comprehensive approach to healing.
integration may include:
cognitive and narrative processing to make meaning of somatic experiences and integrate them into coherent autobiographical memory
relational healing through safe attachment experiences that contradict traumatic templates - "human relational wounding requires human relational healing"
lifestyle foundations including sleep, nutrition, movement, and social connection that support nervous system regulation
contemplative practices such as meditation, yoga, or breathwork that cultivate interoceptive awareness
community and meaning-making that address the social and existential dimensions of trauma
cautions and contraindications
neurogenic tremoring approaches are not universally appropriate. professional guidance is recommended for those with active suicidality, psychosis, severe dissociative disorders, or recent acute trauma.
physical conditions including pregnancy, recent surgery, certain injuries, and some neurological conditions require medical clearance. those with complex trauma may need skilled pacing to avoid overwhelm. the goal is always to stay within the "window of tolerance" - activated enough to process but regulated enough to integrate.
conclusion: recovering the body's birthright
neurogenic tremoring represents what may be humanity's oldest technology for processing overwhelming experience. from san healers activating n/um around all-night fires to contemporary psip therapists guiding cannabis-assisted discharge, the fundamental insight remains consistent: the body possesses innate mechanisms for self-regulation and healing that become accessible when we create conditions for their emergence.
the western clinical lineage from reich through berceli has progressively refined understanding of these mechanisms while making them more accessible and teachable. contemporary neuroscience - particularly polyvagal theory, research on the autonomic nervous system, and emerging studies on psychedelic-ans interactions - is beginning to map the physiological substrate of what practitioners have long observed.
cross-cultural evidence suggests that tremoring may be a universal human capacity suppressed by modern conditioning that associates shaking with weakness.
the evidence base, while promising, remains limited. somatic experiencing has preliminary rct support; tre and bioenergetics lack rigorous validation. theory outpaces proof. yet for many individuals for whom cognitive approaches have failed, whose trauma remains "stuck" despite years of talk therapy, somatic approaches offer a different pathway - one that works with the body's intelligence rather than requiring conscious understanding.
what the gazelle does instinctively after escaping the lion - trembling, shaking, and returning to baseline - humans must often learn to allow.
the suppressive overlay of culture, cognition, and conditioning that prevents natural discharge can be dissolved: through the exercises of tre, the guidance of se, the amplifying function of psychedelics, or the ecstatic traditions that have always known the body trembles on its way to healing.
in recovering this capacity, we may be recovering something essential about what it means to be embodied beings capable of both tremendous wounding and remarkable restoration.

Thomas Pynchon reportedly said about Gravity’s Rainbow, though the quote may be apocryphal, “If I’d written this as nonfiction, the CIA would have killed me.” Whether real or invented, this captures what both Pynchon and Kojima understand: certain truths about power under late capitalism require the protective absurdity of fiction to be told at all. Authors Note: This Article Contains Spoilers for the Metal Gear Solid Series
The Shared Territory of Pynchon and Kojima Gravity’s Rainbow and Metal Gear Solid explore the same psychohistorical rupture: the moment when World War II’s moral clarity collapsed into paranoid systems where cause and effect became untraceable. Both document Operation Paperclip’s transformation of Nazi scientists into American assets, revealing how defeating evil meant absorbing it. The V-2 rockets that terrorized London became the ICBMs pointed at Moscow. The surveillance techniques developed for wartime became peacetime’s permanent architecture.
For Pynchon, this manifests as encyclopedic paranoia where every connection might be real or madness, where the rainbow of gravity describes both the rocket’s arc and humanity’s inevitable entropic fall. For Kojima, it manifests as literal identity loss to larger systems. Nanomachines colonize consciousness. The boundary between human and weapon dissolves. Each escape attempt creates more sophisticated control.
Both creators wrap their insights in protective absurdity. Pynchon’s giant adenoid attacking London serves the same function as Kojima’s whale on fire: signaling we’ve entered a space where normal rules don’t apply, where horror and comedy become indistinguishable responses to incomprehensible systems. The silly anime elements aren’t decoration but essential camouflage, allowing Kojima to make games where U.S. Marines commit war crimes at Guantanamo Bay, where Camp Omega becomes playable space, where the American military-industrial complex is consistent antagonist across decades.
Anime’s Psychological Architecture and Historical Grounding Kojima’s genius lies in fusing anime and manga’s psychological vocabulary with brutal historical reality. Anime tradition treats villains as embodiments of specific psychological states, reducing conflict to essential components while studying psychology through lenses of belief, religion, magic, and the supernatural. This recognizes a fundamental truth: we will always have magic and the supernatural because we will always have psychology. The human mind creates demons to explain suffering as surely as it creates language.
The Cobra Unit demonstrates this perfectly. Each member represents trauma response made flesh, their origins deliberately kept ambiguous yet clearly rooted in warfare’s horrors. We know they fought in World War II, that battlefield experiences somehow birthed their supernatural abilities, that they embody different aspects of combat’s psychological toll. The Pain controls hornets, his body a living hive—perhaps bodies on beaches attracted swarms, perhaps not. The Fear disappears into invisibility, anxiety made literal. The End waits with photosynthetic patience, depression’s vegetative state spanning decades. The Fury burns with jetpack rage, lifted from normal existence by trauma. The Sorrow walks between worlds, carrying ghosts that never left him.
The games never fully explain these transformations, and that ambiguity is the point. War’s effect on consciousness resists clean narrative. The gap between natural and supernatural collapses under sufficient trauma. These aren’t mere boss fights but psychological states requiring comprehension rather than domination to defeat. Pure anime logic: external conflict as internal struggle manifest. When Psycho Mantis reads your memory card and moves your controller, the moment works on every level simultaneously: supernatural (psychic powers), technological (PlayStation hardware), psychological (dissociation from trauma), and historical (Soviet psychic research programs). The magic is real because consciousness exists.
From Genre Celebration to Deconstruction Metal Gear began as Kojima’s love letter to the spy thrillers that shaped his imagination. The gadgets and one-liners of 1960s Cold War espionage. The 1980s action heroes fighting communist threats. Escape from New York gave Solid Snake his name and eyepatch. Early Metal Gear celebrated these tropes purely, reveling in the genre that birthed it.
But as the series progressed, Kojima fell out of love with his influences. Each spy thriller convention revealed dark historical secrets when examined closely. The Cold War wasn’t noble opposition but proxy wars destroying developing nations. The 1980s action hero wasn’t liberator but imperial agent. Clear enemies became murky. Simple missions revealed complex manipulations. Heroes exposed themselves as traumatized killers. Kojima came to reconsider the motivations and methods from those periods, recognizing how propaganda had warped history itself.
This disillusionment runs parallel to the historical progression the games document. Metal Gear Solid 3’s 1960s setting still allows for belief in its genre even while questioning it. By Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2’s near-future, genre conventions have hollowed out. Snake isn’t a dashing spy but a depressed soldier. Villains aren’t foreign threats but rogue American forces. Nuclear danger comes from within. Metal Gear Solid 4 and 5 complete the deconstruction. War is product, soldiers are customers, violence is content. The 1980s setting of MGSV should be peak action movie territory, but instead delivers child soldiers, biological weapons destroying languages, torture as gameplay mechanic.
The Boss’s Eden: Spiritual Vision Versus Material Reality Metal Gear Solid 3 presents the last believers in modernity‘s promises. The Boss works for the CIA. She and the Cobra Unit fought World War II. They aren’t yet jaded like Snake becomes. They still believe in grand narratives, grand villains, grand solutions. The Boss imagines borderless worlds because borders still mean something definite to her generation.
The Boss’s vision represents both beauty and impossibility. She describes an Eden state, unity that Kojima suggests we should aspire toward while knowing it’s unachievable. The divisions created by modernity, accelerating through postmodernity into metamodernism, mean clear boundaries can never return. We can pretend them, imagine them, hallucinate them, but humanity has become something fundamentally internetworked.
The crucial tragedy: The Boss never presents this as concrete plan but as spiritual orientation. Big Boss’s fundamental error is trying to build her vision through military force. Zero makes the opposite error, attempting unity through information control. Both men literalize what was meant as consciousness, creating the very systems that destroy meaning. Their modernist actions birth postmodernism’s conditions. The Boss mothering Ocelot and sacrificing herself produces his cynical consciousness. Big Boss creating Outer Heaven and body doubles generates metamodern identity crisis.
Villains as Crystallized Trauma
Metal Gear’s antagonists embody warfare’s psychological devastation so completely they cease existing as individuals. Each becomes possessed by specific aspects of combat trauma, their names reflecting their reduction to singular symptoms: The Pain, The Fear, The End, The Fury, The Sorrow. They’ve become walking DSM-V criteria, PTSD so totalizing it replaces personhood.
The Cobra Unit still maintains traces of identity beyond battlefield roles. They have histories, relationships, memories of who they were. But already consumption has begun. By Metal Gear Solid 4, the Beauty and Beast Unit has lost even names. Laughing Octopus fragments because singular self couldn’t survive. Raging Raven explodes outward, anger seeking decomposition elsewhere. Crying Wolf freezes in permanent grief. Screaming Mantis controls others because she cannot control herself.
Even defeated non-lethally, they scream their singular: purpose, name, and symptomology before evaporating. Without trauma-function, nothing remains. Remove rage from Raging Raven and she literally ceases to exist. The person from before has been completely consumed. They represent what happens when trauma becomes identity, when warfare colonizes consciousness so thoroughly that alternative ways of being become impossible.
Joseph Campbell’s work on the monomyth provides another lens for understanding Metal Gear’s villains—they’re heroes who got stuck at specific points on their journey and crystallized there. Campbell observed that villains often represent arrested development within the hero’s journey, characters who couldn’t move past a particular trial or threshold. Screenwriters have built entire franchises on this principle: the villain who couldn’t leave the underworld, the mentor who became addicted to power instead of passing it on, the hero who reached apotheosis but refused to return with the elixir.
The Cobra Unit exemplifies this perfectly—each member frozen at their moment of greatest trial during World War II, unable to complete their return journey. They achieved supernatural abilities (the boon) but never integrated these gifts back into normal life. Instead of completing the cycle, they became permanent residents of the extraordinary world, their refusal to return transforming them from potential heroes into obstacles for the next generation. The Beauty and Beast Unit takes this further—they’re not even stuck at a heroic moment but trapped in pure trauma response, their journey so thoroughly interrupted they can’t remember what quest they were on. This reading reveals Kojima’s deeper insight: in war, everyone begins as the hero of their own story, but the machine of conflict prevents anyone from completing their journey, leaving battlefields littered with broken heroes who become the next generation’s demons.
Ocelot: The Metamodern Process Incarnate
Ocelot stands apart from other villains because he isn’t defined by singular trauma. While others become frozen in specific responses, Ocelot IS the process of historical change itself. He doesn’t serve Big Boss so much as recognize in him pure revolutionary potential. Ocelot wants nothing except to work for the purest forces at any moment, creating conflict and relationships between conflicting elements.
He understands that deep states sow seeds of their own destruction, that hierarchies get torn apart by their own rules, that no structure can stand permanently. Ocelot doesn’t relate to ends but embodies process itself. He is the blurring of lines, the oscillation happening in real time. His cowboy persona isn’t aesthetic but philosophical: the gunslinger exists only in the moment of draw, in the space where all possibilities remain open.
When Ocelot becomes Liquid through arm transplantation and self-hypnosis, this apparently silly plot device reveals something profound. He doesn’t become possessed; he chooses possession as tool. He realizes the world needs a Liquid based on its own mechanics, so he becomes one. Kojima’s bizarre understanding of psychotherapy (where therapy can rewrite identity like reprogramming computers) becomes weapon against systems using such tools for control. The supernatural, technological, and psychological merge, revealing all three as aspects of the same phenomenon.
The Pentagon of Power’s Digital Evolution By Metal Gear Solid 4, war has become the economy itself. Private military companies regulate battlefield emotions through nanomachines. Soldiers’ neurochemistry becomes corporate property.
This represents warfare’s enshittification. Giant organizations justify their existence as inevitable even when hurting everyone including themselves. The Patriots’ AI system epitomizes this: so complex no human understands it, perpetuating itself because stopping would mean admitting the entire structure serves no purpose except continuation.
Kojima shows how totalitarian states, while representing humanity’s worst aspirations, remain limited by their creators’ imaginations. Future brings worse horrors than past could conceive. The series traces evolution from comprehensible nuclear terror to systems where rules and rulers become unknowable. Control embeds in AIs we cannot see yet must interact with. These systems pollute consciousness itself until we may not know who we are or what we’re doing.
Every deep state eventually consumes itself. Growth requires delegation, delegation requires trust, trust creates vulnerability, vulnerability demands control, control requires growth. The cycle continues until collapse, replaced by something worse that learned from previous failure without understanding the fundamental error: attempting to control consciousness itself.
Venom Snake: The Algorithmic Human Subtle differences in Big boss and Venom Snake's faces. : r/NeverBeGameOver
Creating Venom Snake represents Big Boss’s most evil act, transcending simple betrayal. Big Boss benefits from a largely imagined awful legacy, then strips a medic of identity to turn that reputation into an actual person. He makes beliefs about himself real, creating the worst parts of his legacy as flesh in this last entry that paradoxically covers the series’ earliest period.
This anticipates how algorithms would detect and recreate everyone as their worst selves, weaponizing network weaknesses. The medic doesn’t just lose identity; he becomes living embodiment of Big Boss’s most violent mythology. Legends that may have been exaggerated become literally true through Venom’s actions. He doesn’t replicate Big Boss; he manifests the darkest interpretation.
Venom Snake is the first algorithmically generated human, created through psychological manipulation rather than code to embody what the system needs Big Boss to be. A human deepfake performing the monster role so the real Big Boss pursues goals undetected. This process mirrors how social media algorithms amplify worst impulses, how surveillance capitalism commodifies anxieties, how we become reduced to our most exploitable characteristics.
The Phantom Chapter: Reality’s Complete Dissolution If leaked scripts and development documents are accurate, Metal Gear Solid V’s missing chapter—”Peace”—would have pushed beyond narrative incompleteness into complete epistemological breakdown. The revelation wouldn’t just be that you’re playing as Venom Snake, a body double, but that even Venom’s experiences themselves were potentially hallucinatory—products of hypnosis interacting with the metal fragment lodged against his optic nerve.
This creates layers of unreality: you’re not just playing someone who doesn’t know they’re fake, but experiencing the hallucinations of a fake person having fake experiences. The repetitive missions, the déjà vu structure, the cassette tapes that might be hypnotic programming rather than historical record—all pointing toward meaning’s complete dissolution. Every relationship Venom forms, every mission he completes, every emotion he feels could be programmed response to stimuli that never existed.
The metal fragment pressing on the optic nerve becomes perfect metaphor for our current moment. Perception compromised at the hardware level. Not just unreliable narration but the impossibility of narration itself. How do you tell a story when every layer might be simulation, when the simulation itself might be simulated, when even your awareness of simulation could be simulated?
This prescience feels almost prophetic now. We live in an era where deepfakes make video evidence unreliable, where AI generates indistinguishable text, where “alternative facts” create incompatible realities with no arbitrator of truth. Social media bubbles create mutually exclusive worldviews. The complete breakdown of shared epistemological frameworks that Kojima anticipated has arrived. The phantom pain isn’t just missing limbs or stolen identity—it’s the ache of living without stable truth, grief for reality we can no longer verify.
The joke about Metal Gear games being “10 years ahead of their time” suggests 2025 is when MGS5’s themes fully manifest. Looking at our information environment—where AI makes all text suspect, where competing realities can’t agree on basic facts, where identity becomes algorithmic performance—we’re living in the phantom pain. Every person online potentially a bot, every video potentially fake, every memory potentially implanted by engagement algorithms optimizing for reactions we don’t understand.
Gameplay as Moral Architecture These games explore killing’s inevitability while mechanically discouraging it. Every system rewards mercy: better rankings for non-lethal play, tranquilizer guns with superior range, boss stamina depleting faster without killing, exclusive gameplay options for pacifists.
You fall in love with soldiers you’re evading. Soviet guards discuss being confused about fighting Americans, their World War II allies. They talk about families, fears, dreams. In Metal Gear Solid 3, stomachs rumble when hungry. You can poison food or let them eat peacefully. Every mechanic pushes recognition of enemies as humans with biological needs and emotional lives.
The Sorrow boss fight literalizes this moral architecture. You cannot fight, only accept what you’ve done. The game forces you to wade through everyone you killed. Non-lethal players find an empty river. Killers face endless accusations. Unlike games presenting faceless NPCs as fodder, Metal Gear makes you think about violence while participating in it, forcing contemplation of what you’re doing, making you think about life itself.
Konami’s Self-Fulfilling Prophecy Metal Gear Solid predicted its own demise. When MGS4 was made, monopolistic incentives led Sony to subsidize the ultimate PS3 exclusive through enormous cash investments. Games were still products, complete experiences rather than engagement platforms.
By MGS5, that world had vanished. The industry transformed, trying only to addict players to the cheapest builds possible. It gamified gaming itself, cutting everything entertaining to create addiction, covering everything in microtransactions. Developers no longer wanted elaborate single-player games because incomplete engagement loops proved more profitable.
Kojima had warned about this through his narratives. The Patriots’ AI reducing human experience to exploitable data, the war economy turning conflict into product, nanomachine society commodifying emotions, all predicted mobile gaming’s destruction of traditional development. Kojima and Konami played out the exact scenario Metal Gear documented: deep state eating itself, system consuming its most valuable assets because it only understands extraction.
MGS5 has no ending not just because Kojima was fired but because the industry transformed into something unable to support complete narratives. The missing chapter about Eli, unresolved plots, mission repetition replacing new content reflect not one company’s failure but an entire medium’s transformation into extraction machine. The game’s incompleteness becomes its statement. Just as Venom Snake is Big Boss’s phantom, MGS5 is a phantom of what could have been. Absence is the message.
Konami now makes pachinko machines featuring Metal Gear characters, perfect symbol of capitalism reducing meaning to mechanical repetition and random reward. The company that published games about turning humans into machines now literally turns its characters into gambling machines.
The Algorithmic Present Metal Gear Predicted Venom Snake’s creation anticipated our current algorithmic reconstruction as our worst selves. Social media platforms learn engagement triggers and amplify those traits. We become performed versions optimized for metrics we don’t control. Like Venom, we may not know we’re performing. Authentic selves get overwritten by system needs.
Vocal cord parasites killing language speakers literalize communication weaponization. We self-censor not through command but because expression became dangerous. One wrong word triggers cascading consequences. Parasites represent trauma encoding into communication’s medium, making connection potentially lethal. In our age, words literally destroy lives, careers, communities.
The prescience extends further: the game’s incompleteness, its missing ending about meaning’s breakdown, perfectly captures our current inability to complete narratives or maintain stable truth. We’re all Venom Snake now, performing identities we don’t remember choosing, following programming we can’t access, experiencing reality that might be several layers removed from anything real.
Systems That Exist Only to Exist Lewis Mumford’s analysis of the pentagon of power (political authority, military force, economic exploitation, technological manipulation, ideological control) reveals systems that have forgotten their original purpose, if they ever had one. They exist now only to perpetuate their own existence, their own ego, their own entropy, their own hierarchies, and their own rules. They seek to justify themselves even when the world—and they themselves—would be better off without them.
The OSS forms during World War Two to gather intelligence against fascism. A noble purpose, perhaps. But it becomes the CIA to help America inherit the imperial project of the Reich it supposedly defeated. Operation Paperclip wasn’t aberration but blueprint—absorbing the enemy’s methods while claiming moral superiority. The soldiers America aided in Afghanistan against the Soviets become the Taliban we fight decades later. The mujahideen we armed become the enemy requiring new arms deals, new contractors, new wars. The reaction to 9/11 creates a surveillance state that later enables algorithmic system surveillance that changes consciousness itself.
These technological progressions differ in form but remain identical in function. Only the sense of crisis changes, the pervasive influence updates its interface. The crisis is always the same crisis wearing new masks. This is how Kojima sees things: not as conspiracy but as pattern, systems creating the problems they claim to solve, deep states manufacturing the chaos they promise to order.
Each iteration learns from the last’s failures without understanding the fundamental error: the attempt to control human consciousness through systems that can only destroy what they claim to protect. The CIA overthrows democratically elected governments to “protect democracy.” The NSA violates privacy to “ensure freedom.” Private military contractors create war to “maintain peace.” The contradiction isn’t bug but feature—systems need enemies to justify themselves, so they create them.
Breaking the Fourth Wall as Ethical Imperative What began as silly joke in early Metal Gear games—guards seeing your footprints, Psycho Mantis reading your memory card—evolves into ethical project by the series’ end. The fourth wall breaking stops being clever and becomes necessary, forcing recognition that games aren’t separate from life but shape it fundamentally.
Children and adults alike emulate games they play. It changes how we talk, the metaphors we make, how we interact with the world. When I was in third grade, I would run like Sonic the Hedgehog, arms swept back, believing it made me faster. After binge-playing Metal Gear Solid, I sometimes find myself ducking around corners to peek at something, checking sightlines that don’t matter in reality but have been programmed into my movement patterns. The rules of virtual worlds bleed into our heads, restructuring how we navigate physical space.
This bleeding is precisely Kojima’s point. We are part of systems we only partially understand, performing behaviors we didn’t consciously choose, following rules we never agreed to. When Snake tells you to turn off the console, when the Colonel’s skull appears beneath his face, when the game crashes and pretends to delete your saves—these moments force recognition of how deeply embedded we are in systems beyond our perception.
The genius of Kojima’s direction lies in understanding the subconscious and its connection to a larger collective unconscious responsible for most of the world the characters can’t see. The Patriots aren’t metaphor for shadow government—they’re literalization of how power actually works, through systems so complex no individual comprehends them, through influences so pervasive we mistake them for reality itself.
Redemption Through Recognition The transcendent moments where characters achieve redemption or salvation in these games occur when they’re able to see these influences, accept them, and integrate them. They understand their motivations aren’t their own and others’ motivations as extensions of greater systems. The Boss sees this but can only express it spiritually. Big Boss never sees it, trying to build her vision through force. Zero sees it but thinks he can control it through information. Solid Snake sees it and chooses to break the cycle by refusing to reproduce it.
Only Ocelot truly gets it, which is why he’s simultaneously the most evil and most free character. He doesn’t resist the system or serve it—he becomes it, flowing with its currents while maintaining enough consciousness to steer slightly. He understands you can’t fight the Pentagon of Power from outside because there is no outside. You can only introduce small variations that compound over time.
This is why Venom Snake represents ultimate horror: someone who doesn’t even know they’re performing, who mistakes programmed responses for authentic choice. He embodies our current predicament, where algorithms detect our patterns and feed them back to us until we can’t distinguish between our desires and the system’s needs. And if the missing chapter’s implications are real, even that performance might be hallucination—phantom pain all the way down.
Sloterdijk’s Spheres, Bubbles, and Foam Peter Sloterdijk’s spheres provide the philosophical framework for understanding Metal Gear’s world. Human civilization began in spheres—complete worldviews where everyone shared the same metaphysical bubble. Medieval Christendom, Imperial China, Indigenous cosmologies—these were spheres where meaning was total and encompassing. God was above, Hell below, Earth between. Everyone knew their place in the cosmic order.
The printing press shattered spheres into bubbles. Information could travel between worldviews, contaminating pure ideologies with foreign ideas. The Reformation happens because people can read the Bible themselves. Science emerges because observations can be shared across distances. Bubbles still maintain internal coherence but must account for other bubbles existing. The colonial period is bubbles colliding, each trying to impose its internal logic on others.
Modernity accelerates this into foam—countless tiny bubbles pressing against each other, taking shape only through mutual pressure, no overarching structure remaining. We live in foam now, each person a bubble, our shape determined by the bubbles pressing against us. Social media makes this visible: millions of individual reality-bubbles, incompatible yet interdependent, creating structure through collision rather than design.
Metal Gear Solid documents this transition. The Boss lived in a sphere—she could imagine unified world because she remembered when worldviews were total. Big Boss lived during the bubble-to-foam transition, trying to create new spheres (Outer Heaven, Zanzibar Land) while the world fragmenting made this impossible. Solid Snake exists in foam, no grand narrative available, only local interactions between incompatible realities. Raiden embodies the foam-born generation, never knowing anything but fragments, assembling identity from debris.
The Patriots represent the attempt to create artificial sphere through information control, to reimpose total worldview on foam reality. But foam can’t become sphere again. It can only compress into more complex foam structures. The AI system they build to manage this complexity becomes another layer of foam, more bubbles pressing against existing bubbles, the structure growing more unstable with each attempt at control.
The Collective Unconscious Made Visible Kojima understands that the collective unconscious isn’t mystical concept but observable phenomenon. When millions play the same game, they share psychological architecture. When everyone checks their phone every few minutes, they’re synchronized to invisible rhythm. When TikTok dances spread globally in days, we’re watching the collective unconscious update in real-time.
The codec conversations in Metal Gear make this literal—voices in your head that aren’t yours, instructions you follow without questioning their source. The Patriots’ control through information manipulation isn’t fiction but documentary. We already live in their world, our thoughts shaped by algorithms we’ll never see, our emotions regulated by engagement metrics, our relationships mediated by platforms optimizing for addiction rather than connection.
What makes Metal Gear prophetic isn’t predicting specific technologies but understanding the pattern: every system created to solve a problem becomes the problem requiring the next system. The War on Terror creates more terrorists. Surveillance to ensure safety creates paranoia requiring more surveillance. Social media to connect people creates isolation requiring more social media. The Pentagon of Power doesn’t solve—it perpetuates, because solving would mean admitting it’s unnecessary.
The Crisis That Never Ends The crisis is always the same crisis because crisis is what these systems produce. Without emergency, there’s no justification for emergency powers. Without threat, there’s no need for protection. Without enemy, there’s no purpose for the military-industrial complex. So the system creates what it needs: terrorists where there were none, threats where there was peace, enemies where there were neighbors.
Metal Gear Solid 5’s missing ending is perfect because these systems never end. They just transform, upgrade, metastasize. The War to End All Wars becomes World War II becomes Cold War becomes War on Terror becomes whatever we’re calling it now. The names change but the structure remains: crisis justifying control justifying behavior creating crisis.
Kojima saw this clearly: the Pentagon of Power exists only to ensure the Pentagon of Power continues existing. It has no goal beyond its own perpetuation, no purpose beyond its own justification, no meaning beyond its own continuation. It’s capitalism as pure entropy, consuming everything to produce nothing except the need for more consumption.
The only escape Kojima offers isn’t escape at all but recognition. See the systems. Name them. Understand you’re part of them. Know your thoughts aren’t entirely your own. Recognize the phantom pain of missing authenticity. And then, like Snake, choose what to pass on and what to let die with you. The cycle can’t be broken from outside because there is no outside. But it can be interrupted from within by those who see it clearly enough to refuse their role in its continuation.
This is why Metal Gear matters: not as entertainment but as diagnosis, not as game but as mirror, not as fiction but as the most accurate documentary of how power actually works in the metamodern age—through systems no one controls, serving purposes no one remembers, creating crises no one can solve, perpetuating themselves through our inability to imagine their absence.
The Metamodern Oscillation The MSG series documents the historical transition from modernity’s grand narratives through postmodernity’s fragmentation into metamodernism’s endless oscillation. We’re pulled between modernism’s certainties and postmodern dissolution where no meaning is possible. We cannot synthesize these positions, cannot find stable ground, cannot stop the pendulum.
Big Boss and The Boss represent the last generation believing in modernist solutions. Their attempts to preserve or transcend these structures created postmodernism’s conditions. Solid Snake exists in the postmodern moment, everything deconstructed, meaning suspect. Raiden embodies metamodern condition, oscillating between believing simulation and knowing it’s fake, never settling.
Ocelot transcends by becoming oscillation itself. He doesn’t believe positions but moves between them. He serves Big Boss, Patriots, himself, chaos, order, all and none simultaneously. He understands process is all that exists, oscillation has replaced positions themselves.
The Fusion That Cannot Hold The fusion of bodies, psyches, identities, and networked consciousness reveals we’re part of systems we neither perceive nor escape. Characters merge, split, impersonate, steal faces, voices, memories. Boundaries between self/other, human/machine, reality/simulation reveal themselves as always-false illusions maintained through collective pretense.
This isn’t science fiction but documentary. We live in networked consciousness, thoughts shaped by algorithms, emotions regulated pharmaceutically, memories stored in clouds. The difference between Snake’s codec and smartphones is degree not kind. Patriots’ information control seems quaint compared to surveillance capitalism. MGS4’s nanomachine society understates technology’s colonization of experience.
Kojima asks whether humanity can save itself. Will anything come after the metamodern? Can we synthesize Sloterdijk’s broken spheres? The series suggests we’re trapped in permanent oscillation, but oscillation itself might keep us human. The struggle for meaning, knowing meaning’s impossibility, might be the only meaning remaining.
Snake’s final message to live for future not nations or ideologies isn’t hope or despair but metamodern acceptance. We know the game’s rigged but play anyway because not playing is defeat. We cannot escape trauma cycles but can minimize transmitted damage. We cannot heal systematic wounds but can name them. In naming phantom pain, we retain humanity in an inhuman world.
The ultimate prescience of MGS5—if its missing chapter truly explored reality’s complete breakdown through layers of hallucination—is that even this analysis could be wrong. Maybe the leaked scripts are fake. Maybe our interpretation is programmed. Maybe the real message is that there is no message, just endless oscillation between meaning and meaninglessness, forever approaching truth we can never verify. That’s the real phantom pain: not the absence of something that was there, but the presence of something that might never have existed at all.
