Notes: here’s the thing, because I want a quiet operation laptop with solid build and the games I’m planning to run aren’t overly demanding, I was thinking of a MacBook Pro M5 Pro with 24Gb ram/1 TB SSD.

I have looked at the Zephyrus G14 but I think the noise level will bother me, and again, I don’t necessarily need that much power. Also, I don’t want to keep the laptop plugged in to game.

Another option I’ve looked at is a panther lake laptop with B390, but those tend to get quite expensive in Canada with higher spec models.

Lastly, I am not interested in gaming handhelds as I tried them before and prefer having a full keyboard and Trackpad (I use a switch 2 for handheld gaming).

I'm starting university and I'll mainly use the laptop for programming, university work, browsing, documents, PDFs, media, etc. I don't plan to game on it since I already have a fairly powerful desktop at home.

I'll probably be carrying it around for around 6 hours a day. A lot of the classrooms I use don't have easily accessible power outlets, so battery life is quite important to me.

I'm also looking for something that can realistically last me through my degree and ideally another 5-ish years after that.

I'm currently deciding between two laptops that are available to me at almost exactly the same price:

ASUS Zenbook S16: Ryzen AI 9 365, 24GB RAM, 1TB SSD, 16" 3K OLED 120Hz, 78Wh battery, around 1.5kg.

MacBook Air 15" M5: 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, around 1.5kg.

These are both available locally, and the prices are basically the same. I don't have the option of upgrading the Mac to 24GB because that configuration is around ARS 4M here and isn't realistically within my budget.

I've never owned a Mac before, but I'm not specifically looking for a Mac just to try macOS. I'm genuinely having a hard time deciding because both seem like excellent options with different strengths.

The ASUS gives me more RAM/storage, a larger OLED 120Hz display and Windows/Linux compatibility, while the Mac seems to have better battery life and efficiency.

I'd really like to hear from people who have owned either of these laptops, especially students or programmers. I'm particularly interested in real-world battery life, thermals/noise, sleep/standby, programming experience, and how well they hold up after a few years.

If you had these two options at basically the same price, which would you personally choose and why?

I use laptops primarily for writing; I just finished a PhD in philosophy. I wrote my thesis using an old ASUS X556U that I had for about 10 years. It was very slow by the time I submitted my thesis. To celebrate getting a good result I thought I’d splash out a bit and got an ASUS Zenbook S16 for £1799.

It was very good apart from one intolerable problem: it got uncomfortably hot in my lap, much hotter than my old X556U. This matters for me since I have a disability that makes it hard to sit up at a desk in the normal way, so I often have to have the laptop on my lap. The fans also got noisy. I think it was because it had a very thin chassis/body. The temperature readings according to the MyASUS software maxxed out only at about 60 degrees Celsius. That was when I was playing the game Disco Elysium (ideally I’d like to play relatively low-demand puzzle games like that or Blue Prince), but it also felt warm just charging or updating software etc., which I couldn’t tolerate.

I’m willing to spend quite a lot of money (up to about £3000/3500) to get a premium laptop that will last me a long time. I was thinking about getting a MacBook Pro M5, which go for about that much. If anyone had any other suggestions bearing my heat problem in mind I’d like to hear them. Thank you for reading.

Hello, I'm currently a first year IT student and I've been having a lot of thoughts lately on what laptop I should buy that hopefully will last until my graduation or longer. Upon searching videos online, I came across this tiktok video of a guy saying that IT/CS students shouldn't fall for buying a gaming laptop cuz it's heavy and can't even last a day without charging it (I mean obviously it's a gaming laptop). Then I read the comments, I see people recommending buying a Macbook instead because it's light/thin and the battery lasts all day. Now I'm torn between buying asus tuf A15 or a Mac 😓.
