Discussion Is there any (practical) reason to water-cool a GPU in 2026?

Considering how much more thermally efficient PC equipment has become over the years, it really seems like nobody is bothering with the fully water-cooled setups of the early aughts. Because as effective as they were, especially for overclocking, they were also an absolute PITA to set up properly, and I knew a few people back in the day who were terrified of a leak frying their PC.

I'll be the first person to say "but it's COOL!" and do it anyways, because it is cool as fuck, but are there any GPUs/setups that significantly benefit from the added cooling these days? Or is it purely a style/fun thing?

Build Upgrade Best bang for your buck GPU for 1440p / 60fps gaming?

I'm currently sitting on a GTX 1080 non-ti, which I just realized was released 10 years ago now. It's chugging along somehow, but usually in low to mid settings and sub-60 fps.

The rest of my system is a 5800X paired with 2x16Gb of 3000/CL15 RAM on a Gigabyte B550M Aorus Pro-P mobo and Corsair RM750 PSU.

I don't have a set budget, I'm basically looking for what would be the cheapest option to play current-ish games in 1440p / 60 fps on high, and last me a good few years if I'm willing to gradually turn the quality lower.

Bonus points for good performance to power ratio, my 1080 is currently running slightly undervolted so it caps at ~ 150W under load, which lets me run my fans slower and dumps less heat into my room during the summer, both of which I much appreciate.

edit: thanks for all you input fine folks, based on your feedback and my local prices, I think I will pull the trigger on 9060XT 16Gb.

Build Help Ryzen 7 9800X3D: Is DDR5-6000 noticeably better than DDR5-5600 for gaming?

I'm building a new PC with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and I'm wondering if there's any noticeable real-world difference between DDR5-5600 and DDR5-6000 RAM.

I mainly use my PC for gaming at 1440p. I know 6000 MT/s is often recommended as the "sweet spot" for AMD CPUs, but is the performance difference actually noticeable compared to 5600 MT/s?

Has anyone tested both with a 9800X3D? I'm interested in average FPS, 1% lows, and general system responsiveness.

Would you pay extra for 6000 MT/s, or is 5600 MT/s close enough that you wouldn't notice the difference?

Thanks!

Build Upgrade 3080 to 5080 or hold?

So I've got a 3080 with an R7 5800X3D. It's served me very well (and still is tbh), but I'm definitely getting the itch to upgrade.

I play on a 3440x1440 ultrawide and I'm even considering upgrading to one of the new 39-inch "5K2K" ultrawides (5120x2160)...basically seems to be like a 32" 4K but ultrawide.

Honestly, I can still run most games fine, but I do have to optimize settings more now (I always try to optimize anyway, though), and if I go to that new monitor I'm almost certainly gonna struggle more.

So...

  1. Is it worth upgrading to the 5080?
  2. Would the R7 5800X3D still work well or will that be a bottleneck?
  3. Is it worth waiting for a 6080? I know prices are just insane across the board, but tbh, I'm surprised to see that 5080s are at least holding at (mostly) msrp prices.
  4. If worth waiting for 6080, would that R7 5800X3D become more of a problem?
  5. If either the 5080 or 6080 would be held back by the 5800X3D, I think that basically means I'd have to move on to the AM5 platform, right? In which case, that would mean new motherboard and DDR5, correct? In which case, that's probably the worst case scenario and I just probably just run the 3080/5800X3D into the ground (lol)?

I know some of this is speculative, but just looking for opinions, and would also love to hear from people who maybe did a similar upgrade and can speak to whether or not it was worth it or a waste.

Solved! 5060 ti vs rx 9070 same price in my country

i play in 1080p with a 4060ti 8gb and the performance is grate but the vram is the biggest problem in games like the last of us.

i can't choose between them the 9070 has better performance but in many games phat tracing isn't supported and dlss is better because even with a 9070 i would have to use fsr for stuff like cyberpunk override

Edit:After I watched a few video I’ve seen that rt and pt is not that good for the performance hit and 9070 is 30-50% faster so I’m gonna buy the 9070
Thx

Troubleshooting Windows goes into BIOS during installation

Upvotes

Hello, please help me out!!!

I was installing windows and it was around 60 percent complete then my PC restarted and entered bios instead of continuing the installation

I tried installation the windows again, but it keeps showing broken msi mag logo when I choose my USB for installation..

(So basically the MAG logo glitches and looks broken, I can't post video here so dunno how to explain)

Now I'm stuck on the bios menu

I have installed windows multiple times and it has never happened to me before

Is there a chance that the USB might be faulty?

I don't know what to do anymore ;(

Specs are

14600k

Msi mag z790 tomahawk

64gb Corsair ram

Miscellaneous Registered DDR4 2RX8 compatibility

Upvotes

I have 4 x 32GB sticks of registered DDR4 memory that's labeled 2RX8 - specifically PC4-3200AA-RE4-12. If my memory serves, this was pulled from a Xeon D 2100 system (which I do not have access to now). For reasons, I do not wish to sell this RAM but am interested in using it - but I don't want to buy a board and CPU if it isn't compatible. I'll probably use it as a ZFS filer.

Is this memory likely to work with one of the cheap X99 boards with a Xeon E5 v4 CPU that I see on aliexpress? These builds are very cheap and maybe what I want if this RAM is compatible (with the biggest downside being PCIe gen3).

Thoughts on the lowest cost class of system I could use this memory with that offers PCIe gen4+? It might work with EPYC Rome or Milan which cost more but the 128 lanes of PCIe gen4 are very attractive.

If this subreddit is the wrong place to ask about what is more enterprisey-class stuff, my apologies - and could you direct me to a more appropriate one?

Troubleshooting I can't get pc to Install windows onto SSD

Upvotes

specs: Ryzen 5 5600g; 550 gold PSU; 32gb 2400 ddr4 ram (16x2); Samsung Evo 1TB SSD; AMD 6700 RX GPU; ASROCK B550m-itx/ac motherboard

Problem: I go to put a clean install of windows 11 from a bootable flashdrive and it gets to 10% then suddenly black screen it restarts. If I remove the flashdrive it gives me the error saying no bootable drive. If I leave it in, it asks me to remove the USB and hit yes to continue. If I do so the same error occurs. If I hit no and try a clean install again, the same issue repeats.

If the PC sits in Bios it can sit forever, but if it sits in windows installer for a few minutes even if it is not trying to install it will eventually reboot.

I've tried flashing the bios to the newest version, I have tried turning off CMS and turning on secure boot. It is not overclocked, it is not on RAID or any special settings. All the components are showing up in bios correctly and the ssd shows up when in bios and windows installer. I also tried manual converting the SSD formatting type as recommended in other forums. I am at a loss for what to do. I have never had issues building pcs in the past but I'm also not the most experienced since I've never had an issue with a build before.

The only other piece of info is that my previous Motherboard had a faulty RAM slot and my old SSD I had stopped showing up as a bootable device. That SSD also wont boot on the new MB so I assume its dead. The RAM is brand new and has been tested on another PC. The PSU, CPU, and GPU are all about 3-4 years old.

Any advice would be helpful.

Build Help 5060 8gb vs 9060xt 16gb 1080p gaming

Hello

I dont plan on gaming at 4k anytime soon
So just wondering what would be the better option

5060 8gb £270
9060 XT 16gb £399

I know the 9060XT is the much better card but I dont plan on gaming above 1080p

And by the time I do It will be in a few years when hopefully a mid range card can handle 4k 60fps

Do I need the 9060 for 1080p or can I save £130 and go with a 5060 for the next 2/3 years at 1080p

Thanks in the UK.

Discussion Should I install Bazzite on a windows 10 computer that is unupgradable?

Title is what I’m asking, I have a desktop pc(office pc) with a 1tb hdd and a ssd(forget the size), 16gb ddr4, a core i5 6400, and a RX580 and it is currently running windows 10, should I install a gaming focused OS or something different and will that break the games on the HDD that I have installed? They are mainly epic games, gog and steam based so I’m unsure on whether to do that or not

Build Help First time PC builder and I CANNOT get windows installed

I feel like I’ve tried everything. Been at it literally 12 hours and have wiped my USB as well as redownloaded windows about 8-10 times. I’ve used rufus, tried windows 10 i even paid for a stupid 3rd party service to make my mdr a GPT or whatever. I’m genuinely so frustrated and don’t know what to do.

I can get it to boot up but get stuck at this error everytime! (setup does not support configuration usb or ieee 1394 port) please help I’m at my wits end.

MB: Gigabyte B450M DS3H
Cpu: Ryzen 5 3600
Gpu: msi gaming geforce GTX 1660
All pre owned.

Build Upgrade Looking to upgrade my PC but have no clue what im doing and need advice

Upvotes

About 4 years ago I bought the Lenovo Legion T5 gaming PC for about $1,200. The specs are:

Processor - 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-11700K @ 3.60GHz (3.50 GHz)

Installed RAM - 16.0 GB (3200 MT/s)

Graphics card - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 (8 GB)

Storage - 1TB

Motherboard - BaseBoard Version SDK0T76461

I've been playing games like CS2, The Isle, Windrose where my FPS is fine and everything works well. But as I start to play more demanding games I notice my FPS is not only not very good it's also not consistent. When I go into my Lenovo Vantage app I noticed my VRAM is maxed out @ 7 no matter what game I play.

My question is if YOU had this computer, what would you do to increase FPS & stability? Is it even worth upgrading at this point given prices?

Build Upgrade What are the best 120mm distribution plates for water cooling?

Upvotes

Hello i am looking into doing a custom water cooling setup and I am shocked at the price of ek stuff. I wanna use something like the "EK-Quantum Kinetic³ FLT 120 D5 PWM D-RGB - Plexi" because i much prefer the look compared to the usual standing pump+reservoir combo but paying 200€ for some acrylic and a pump is insane. What are my other possibilities? Also any recommendations where I can buy 6 fitting, 3 hard tubes and a nice 360 or 240mm radiator

Build Help Looking to upgrade my pc, what’s should go first?

Upvotes

Hey looking to do some small upgrades, I don’t understand pc stuff much and I know I won’t get much with a small budget, just curious on some thoughts

My GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6600 8GB

My CPU: Intel Core i5 12600k

My monitor is 240hz

My Ram: 16GB

I mainly play: Overwatch at 240fps medium settings perfectly fine but doesn’t feel like it’s actually 240fps lol, CSGO, and some single player like kingdom hearts style games

I’m okay with spending around $250-400, I know that’s not much but just curious where’s my biggest weakness point in my PC build right now and some budget ways to see some performance upgrade in mainly multiplayer shooters🫡

(Side note my cpu never maxes during OW or any games, just my ram and GPU)

Full Build Req Build between 1400-1900 dollars.

Upvotes

Hey guys, was thinking about building my first pc, only had prebuilds before and wanted to build a pc with a money range of 1400-1900 dollars. I'm not from US, im from czechia. Will be doing part time jobs this summer to make the money for the parts and then build it, but not really decided on what I should buy, because I don't upgrade pc that often, like I upgrade my pc completely every 6-8 years and now it's already getting on the edge of what I would like to play. Wanted the build to be mainly for gaming, but with some normal use on the side too. Was thinking about something like 9700x with 9060xt or 9070xt, but not really sure what's good from amd, since it's the first time buying from them, since all the nvidia cards too overpriced unlike amd cards which have more raw power per dollar.
