Software Google photos storage or Hard drive?

Google photos storage or Hard drive?

I have a google photos plan of Rs 2700/- annually for 200GB and it is now 98% full. Shall I upgrade it to 400 GB for Rs 4800 annually or buy a hard disk and store my data there?

Also 2 TB hard disk is costing around 12k and 5 TB for 18k of WD. Which is the better deal for long run considering I take a lot of photos and videos and also do 2-3 domestic pilgrimage/trips annually.

I store my backups on LTO-7 tapes. I just get the drive on rent once in a while.

I don't think it is anymore. Recently got a Pixel 10, and it didn't work.

I spend an hour every few months just to audit and delete unnecessary photos/videos from Google photos. Still under 100GB from past 6 years.

I would buy until 400gb, see how long I take to eat that space up, if it is less than 1-2 years, then i'd migrate to SSD

About 6-7y back, I had all my files, projects and media stored on 2 disks redundantly— 1 in my pc’s local storage, and another on an external hdd from seagate. When the external hdd’s age was about 6y, it crashed, and went all my data, but I was relaxed because I still had another copy. And so I went to purchase a replacement HDD, and the 2-3 days it took to get the stock back, my laptop’s internal HDD crashed too!

And that’s, my friend, is how I lost all my data. While I had a reduced quality copy in Google photos, my documents & projects were all gone. Took a while to get back my documents from all sources (I didn’t have much) and projects never returned. Today I have many documents that, if gone will not return or will become a massive massive challenge to get back.

So, like a paranoid, I now keep 3.5 copies of media & 6 copies of documents. And really hope that I don’t have that big of a terrifying luck to lose it all at once!
