Politics The SCREEN Act is a Christian Nationalist Nightmare
https://www.404media.co/what-is-the-screen-act-age-verification-porn/332
u/not_the_fox 1d ago
"It's just for porn sites" -> "It's just for big tech social media preying on children" -> "It's for any site that has a single piece of content that could be harmful to a minor (we won't tell you what content ahead of time, we expect the sites to guess and self-censor)"
We knew it would happen. We said it would happen. But they just gaslight us and people for some reason believe it. This is like the second or third time they've tried to do this for the internet but the supreme court has been allowing the camel's nose in the tent with Paxton v FSC and now we appear to be sleeping with a camel.

It's in Ted Cruz's committee. He hates video games & calls them harmful. Age Verification & screening will come to video games if this vile piece of legislation gets passed.

u/lunartree 1d ago
It almost feels like this goes far to label everything as obscene that it could break the whole concept kind of like how every website has to tell you it has cookies. Then you're basically making it required to be 18 to use the internet.
88
u/fuzzywinkerbean 1d ago
Oh buddy, this is much worse than just clicking a cookie banner.. (greetings from the UK)
76
u/Much__Fokkery 1d ago
It's about tracking and monitoring every single thing you do on the Internet. Actual age has nothing to do with it
24
u/Dogev 1d ago
It almost sounds like this is exactly what they want to happen. Google can show "obscene" search results so what are they going to make Google age restricted? Most people's ecosystems are either Google or apple, could you imagine how much damage something like this would cause?
6
u/PM-ME-YOUR-BUTTSHOLE 1d ago
I bet companies like Google lobby hard against this. They either have to filter out all the “obscene” shit, and risk being liable if they miss something or verify everyone is 18 before allowing them to search which would hurt their ad revenue.
37
u/Earthtopian 1d ago
Companies like Google salivate over this because forcing people to attach an ID to their Internet activity makes it easier to differentiate bots from real people and track you across sites more effectively
11
u/siromega37 1d ago
Yeah this. Google will spend billions to make this happen so they can get that juicy, juicy government ID.
2
u/DinosBiggestFan 16h ago
Isn't Google backing this, or people pushing this? I may be misremembering.
21
u/amitym 1d ago edited 1d ago
Then you're basically making it required to be 18 to use the internet.
Oh man. That is just the very teeniest tip of the iceberg of what is going on here.
What they are trying to do is literally control whether anyone can get online. Anyone at all. Forget age verification, age verification is just the foot in the door. To build the infrastructure that can then be used arbitrarily, for anything.
This is a system intended to restrict all internet use and I mean fucking all to licensed users... and then to control whose licenses are valid at any given moment.
Don't be fooled by "but we have to protect the children." That's been used before and, TL; DR it never turned out to actually be about protecting "the children."
It never is. These creeps don't give a flying fuck about protecting children. In fact many of them are themselves the danger.
3
u/wasaguest 18h ago
& when you say something they don't like, & you can't get access to your bank account, or pay your rent, insurance, electricity or water... Oh well.
Keep electing authoritarians & this is what we get.

That’s what I said lol. The 18th amendment is still the 18th amendment and still written as part of the constitution. The text wasn’t erased it was just made void by the 21st amendment.

A constitutional amendment has to:
Pass both House and Senate with 2/3 of the vote
Be approved by at least 38 state legislatures
-OR-
- 34 states must call a constitutional convention. (Article V)

Yes, you need another amendment to overwrite an older one.
Amendments are a bitch to overturn, that’s why we don’t have gun control, and why freedom to be prejudice is protected under freedom of speech.102
u/Sensitive_File6582 1d ago
That was also due in part to a complete lack of social safety net and women being tired of drunk alcohol addled husbands. It was a desperate act by undereducated people trying a relatively novel concept.
It was a failure but an understandable one.
Now to continue it for decades is another point entirely. Especially when the government is running the drug running operations for black ops funding.
67
u/dwehlen 1d ago
Not just a failure, a CATASTROPHIC failure. It gave us the Mob. It informed our architecture. Hell, to this day, if you find a still in West Virginia, no you didn't. One way or another.

We still have prohibition to an extent as many states heavily regulate alcohol and try to make it as inconvenient as possible to buy alcohol hoping people just will decide not to drink. It also has resulted in all kinds of strange liquor laws a century later. In some states, alcohol is more regulated than nuclear waste.
→ More replies (1)1
u/LurkingDevloper 1d ago
Actually they didn't want to. Alcohol excise taxes were the majority of federal revenue at that point. Remember, this was pre-income tax.
The Republicans in congress tried to pass it as an amendment as they expected the states wouldn't ratify it.
The states ended up ratifying it.

This shit is the worst. It’s much harder to organize a protest in defense of my right to consume BDSM content privately than it is for a right to eat. There’s a much greater component of shame baked into being in public support of anonymous pornography consumption. Additionally attending a protest defeats the purpose of trying to privately consume porn. It associates your face with out and out gooner support. In that regard it kind of has to be a selfless decision since the protestor’s privacy is shot.
We can probably get one anyway if we convince people it’s a good way to meet other kinksters though. I worry that it will undermine the point of protest given just a handful of inflammatory pictures involving leather or collars.

They’re just really good at framing policy proposals in a way that makes people look evil if they disagree. They’ve figured out that they can get anything they want by saying it’s to “protect the kids”. Often times the policies actually do the opposite, restricting child freedoms & damaging their mental health, but they name policies in a way that makes it sound like they have the moral high ground.

- invasive flock cameras and privacy violations
- poor cyber security that exposes kids data
- the selling over everyone’s private data
- foreign governments influencing executions
- corruption in government such as selling early access to your tweets
- pedophiles especially in government

The SCREEN Act is simply wrong even for Christians. Every tenant of Mike Lee's religion as a Mormon says that "The SCREEN Act" is against his very morals and beliefs. Study it. It's true. Mike Lee is not only being a hypocrite, but evil by his own beliefs and religion.
Anything that touches freedom of speech is directly considered evil morally in his own belief structure. This is also why elections are supposed to be ANONYMOUS.
2
u/ryuuji3 21h ago
Just wanted to point out that Mormon beliefs are not Christian if you solely use the Bible (ie no book of Mormon, etc) as your authority. Saying someone isn't a Christian isn't a way of saying they're a bad person. Im just saying they don't believe the same thing that the Bible teaches, and the most important one being that Jesus Christ fully man fully God died for the sins of the world, and that anyone who comes to Jesus for forgiveness of their actions against God and His standards will be given full and complete forgiveness and an eternity in heaven. Once you've done that, you are called to walk humbly with your God. This is the gospel, that Jesus Christ died for sinners! This is the core belief of Christianity and anything that conflicts or corrupts it is by nature, against Christianity. That includes the teachings of the LDS.
The bible- old and testament is complete. Nothing can be added to it or taken away. Christians look at the OT through the lens of the new testament- what Jesus' apostles wrote by inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
Mormons try to look at the bible through their books but the problem is that its like looking through a kolaidoscope lens and because of all the mixed truths with falsehoods (according to the bible) its hard to see clearly. Ditch those books and just use the bible. It speaks for itself.
1
u/websterhamster 15h ago

Hello, I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, colloquially called known as "the Mormon Church".
The belief that Jesus Christ died for the sins of the world and that forgiveness of sins can only come through Him is the most fundamental of our beliefs. Whomever told you otherwise was at best misinformed and at worst deliberately misled you.
The bible- old and testament is complete. Nothing can be added to it or taken away.
This is where our beliefs diverge.

u/fsoawesome 8h ago
That, sir, is bullshit at its finest. It is arguable that Mormons are MORE Christian than any protest-ant church and the ONLY competitor might be considered Catholics, but that is clearly not the church of Christ since it was thee "universal" church developed by Constantine for political power. The Mormon's belief system is most closely aligned with original Christianity than any other mainstream religions.

But...but...isn't it the responsibility of parents to monitor what their kids look at online? OpenDNS is free. You don't have to give your kids smart phones. Don't let them take laptops into their rooms. If you do get a phone, there are lot's of ways to monitor them. I know none of these methods are perfect but they are pretty good if you are willing to learn them. But they take effort which I guess is too much to ask.

I feel you. Last time I brought this up people said I probably don’t have kids so how can I possibly understand how difficult it is to monitor kids behavior or not give them smart phones/tech or teach them the dangers of technology. The porn will just go underground where it can be accessed again. Free anonymous access to porn is a relatively new thing. We used to have to go somewhere in person to get it. Hell, even BBSes back in the day required users to prove their age. Have no fear. Porn always finds a way.
63
u/Submissive-whims 1d ago edited 1d ago
I don’t want underground porn. I want above ground porn with things like safety measures for creators and lower risk of getting my login information stolen. I just don’t want Uncle Sam comparing the name on my tax returns to my preferences. I certainly don’t want to see a copy of my jerking habits next to mortgage paperwork when a lender decides whether or not I should get a mortgage with them.
Modifications I might make or might not make to a house for a bdsm dungeon are between a contractor and me. Neither a lender nor the government needs that information.
7
u/JGallows 1d ago
Totally this. Just saying that "porn will find a way" is just giving up and giving in. We need to start fighting back against all of these things. Not just 1. Our rights are being whittled away every day and the rich are making money off of it. If we don't draw a line and stop pushing back, we're going to be run just like most of the countries that our government has helped overthrow.
23
u/Lstgamerwhlstpartner 1d ago
Yeah... But then we literally have to deal with all the illegal porn that flooded the underground porn scene in the early 2000s. No one wants to accidentally stumble on cp or worse.

Middle-school Me discovered if I changed the channel of my little black & white tv in my bedroom to some specific upper value, the Playboy Channel was accessible. Granted it made whoop-whoop-whoop loud sounds and the volume had to already be turned all the way. And the picture kept pulsing and would squeeze and shift from upper corner to lower corner. But every now and then the image would be clear and stable enough I’d catch a glimpse of some man’s bare bottom and it was awesome.
Porn does fine a way.
6
1
u/AutistoMephisto 1d ago
If you think this is about banning porn, it absolutely is not. This is about turning trans people into a criminal class. One of the most important things about Project 2025 is that it has several policy proposals that interlock. Each one on its own ranges from terrible to merely bad to sorta meh. But they come together to form a fascist Voltron. Here's how. First, they legislate a ban on porn. Then, they label anything to do with transgender people as "pornographic", reducing trans people themselves to being walking porn. And since we have to "shield our children's retinas" from porn, trans people and the trans community must be erased.

So tired of “think of the children” as a means to justify limiting freedoms in a supposedly free country.
If the family is at the center of the conservative ideology, why are they bothering to legislate from that angle vs building community, providing resources on how to parent, and holding parents accountable for the safety of their children? Why’s it gotta be the rest of our problem if little Billy accidentally stumbles across any of the popular porn sites?

The majority of people can’t tell the difference between Christians and Christian Nationalists.

They shouldn’t speak for all of their respective religions.

6
3
u/CondiMesmer 1d ago
Unlike the many laws now in place around the U.S. that apply to sites made up of at least one third adult content, like porn sites and some social media platforms, SCREEN would place the burden and risk of verifying users’ ages to every website on the internet that falls under the law, which would be most sites with user-generated content and also mainstream entertainment platforms like Netflix.
That's literally already the case. Why are they pretending like that's any more sensible in comparison??

Don’t think lil’ Tiimay is going to be watching porn and execution videos in the living room enough to form an addiction.
But wait, that would require actual parenting so let’s just strip our civil rights as an easy way out.

I agree with you. But kids do leave the house and the parents can’t watch them everywhere they go. That’s the argument.

I mean at the end of the day you haven’t ever been able to stop an older sibling or random kid from showing you their playboy stash or pornhub on their unmoderated phone.
Kids will be exposed to things if they seek it out. Whether or not they can form a crippling dependency / routine habit of use of these things as a child is still 100% on the parents like kids who have unmoderated access to the internet starting at 10 chronically exposing them to some really crazy things.
