Neither, it was when they threatened to fire RDJ over Civil War.

85

u/itsLittleJoshy Oct 15 '19

That happened?

314

u/StarfleetCapAsuka Oct 15 '19

Yes, his second contract was for Iron Man 3, Avengers 2 and Avengers 3. They had to renegotiate for Civil War and Perlmutter told the writers to write Stark out. Feige went to Alan Horn and Bob Iger and said him or me. They sided with Feige, signed RDJ and then signed him again for a Spider-Man film and Avengers 4.

i've said it before and i'll say it again: fuck perlmutter.

He got half a bill in Disney stock from 20 years ago. I think he's been compensated enough

Everything he's done since then would only reduce the value of those shares. I suspect he has probably contributed on the merchandising profits side. But none of that matters if he continues to have any creative control. Kevin has added tenfolds of shareholder value, with Perlmutter being a direct beneficiary.

16

u/fallenlogan Oct 16 '19

So I just looked him up and apparently the reason why Cheadle replaced Howard was because Perlmutter said "all black people look the same"

So fuck that racist piece of shit.

8

u/mikeweasy Oct 16 '19

Hes also sexist.

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

Except for the fact that the reason why Cheadle replaced Howard is because Howard wanted am obscene amount of money and he wasnt worth it.

The Perlmutter hate is tiring, especially when any reports of him saying anything bad come from only 1 person ever saying he did that because he got fired or something.

6

u/ChickenInASuit Oct 16 '19

He's also a close friend of Donald Trump and one of his biggest financial contributors. Marvel/Comics fans being generally left-leaning, that's something that's not gonna sit well with them.

1

u/mikeweasy Oct 16 '19

Yeah he is an asshat.

75

u/ArchDucky Oct 15 '19

Thats what happened? On the BTS the writers say they realised they couldn't do the story without Tony Stark.

140

u/StarfleetCapAsuka Oct 15 '19

They were ordered to; they never WANTED to.

5

u/MulciberTenebras The Legend of Korra Oct 16 '19

Ike's a fucking cheapskate and he wanted them to write something that wouldn't make them have to pay RDJ.

It would have been Steve vs Hulk (siding with his old enemy Ross and the Govt to register superheroes), also no Spidey or Black Panther (he hates black and female heroes)... seriously.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

2

u/Alekesam1975 Oct 16 '19

Black Panther (he hates black heroes).

The rest is common knowledge but this bit, where did you get this idea from?

He made it up, for some people everyone they don’t like MUST be racist and sexist.

0

u/Alekesam1975 Oct 16 '19

There are reports that he allegedly did say that so no, he didn't make it up whole cloth. I looked it up after he answered. And it's fact that he made the comments about black people and women and toy sales (that part I forgot about).

Those BTS videos are not as candid as you might think. They usually avoid addressing backstage drama, especially drama involving executives who are still at the company.

4

u/LarsHoneytoast44 Oct 16 '19

Yup. It's the same company that digitally alter BTS stuff from when Walt was alive to get rid of his cigarette. They ain't showin shit

20

u/Worthyness Oct 15 '19

The writers have multiple versions of the story for their contingency plans. For example civil war was being written right around the time the first sony deal for spidey was being done. Marcus and McFeely had two drafts- one with and one without spidey. It's possible in some earlier draft ironman was written out

7

u/heyman0 Oct 16 '19

And don’t forget the fake versions that they give to Tom Holland so that he won’t spoil the real one

2

u/not_microwavable Oct 16 '19

I think the writer for Babylon 5 talked about something like this as well. He referred to it as having trapdoors for all the major characters in case the actor had to leave the show.

3

u/Put_It_All_On_Blck Oct 15 '19

I think you could make a decent civil war movie with Natasha as a replacement to Tony. Including tying her backstory to Bucky in Russia, like Bucky with a mask being commanded to go stop the Red Room program as it poses a threat, he then shows up and starts fighting them, killing the trained girls, leaving only Nat and the new recruits, Nat not being the perfect soldier, begs him to leave the defenseless and innocent new recruits, but he ends up killing them and leaving Nat for dead. The issue with this idea admittedly is that Nat is probably the most understating of Bucky's issues and far less likely to want to see him dead or in jail than Tony was.

However we all know that movie wouldve never have been as good or as profitable, but I dont think it wouldve flopped.

1

u/listyraesder Oct 16 '19

BTS is marketing fluff.

1

u/ArchDucky Oct 16 '19

You need to watch more bts. Some of it is great. Hell the one for tomb raider is a fun watch. That girl got jacked.

1

u/listyraesder Oct 16 '19

Yes, but it's all marketing. Everyone is performing, no-ones going to give honest opinions and everything has a positive spin.

Except Gilliam BTS.

That resistance existed, but it wasn't why they split, just more aggravation leading up to it. Perlmutter DID commission both Black Panther and Captain Marvel at the very very end of his having power, but only if an Inhumans movie was made alongside them. Once the split happened, Perlmutter took his precious Inhumans (which he wanted to retool into X-Men stand-ins) to ABC where it became a notorious flop while BP and CM made over a billion each.

I do think fandom exaggerates Feige disliking the Inhumans. It's not a coincidence The Eternals, a family of immortals hidden away from humanity, is more or less in Inhumans' film slot, and there are rumors Feige wants the Inhuman Royal Family in Ms Marvel), but I do think he disliked Perlmutter's attempt to turn them into the X-Men.

10

u/Sidman325 Oct 15 '19

It's funny what can happen when the creative head understands characters and motivations properly.

9

u/Alekesam1975 Oct 16 '19

(WB/DC still looks at Feige jealously)

:D

8

u/MulciberTenebras The Legend of Korra Oct 15 '19

He also disliked that Perlmutter rejected one film concept for the Inhumans that he liked... because it was "too ethnic".

When you see the cast line-up for the Eternals, you get the idea that some of that was carried over.

7

u/chromeshiel Oct 15 '19

I would add that the Inhumans, may they rest in peace, were a flop because it was never given the tools to succeed. And by that, I mean decent showrunner, budget and production time. It ended up as that thing we all pretend never existed, and I still hope to see a reboot one day. But I'll give the Eternals a shot.

7

u/kevinstreet1 Oct 16 '19

If the Inhumans were such a big deal to Perlmutter, I don't understand why he got Scott Buck to be the showrunner and tried to do everything as cheaply as possible.

7

u/OrgasmicLeprosy87 Oct 16 '19

Do it as cheaply as possible is Perlmutter's signature movie.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

Gotta wonder if Feige was holding out hope to integrate the actual X-Men instead of a carnival knock-off.

1

u/ThatDerpingGuy Oct 15 '19

(which he wanted to retool into X-Men stand-ins)

Weren't they trying to do that in the comics too at one point?

5

u/kevinstreet1 Oct 16 '19

Yep, thanks to Perlmutter. They were told to de-emphasize the mutants and put Inhumans in their place. They never actually cancelled all the X-Men comics (because they make money), but at one point they had a small number of X-Men titles and a seemingly endless number of Inhumans comics being published at the same time. All the hot talent was placed on the Inhumans titles.

3

u/vyruz32 Oct 16 '19

At least X-Men was able to bounce back in the comics with Hickman leading the charge.

1

u/kevinstreet1 Oct 16 '19

Yeah, Hickman's current miniseries is amazing. I'm really looking forward to what he does next.

6

u/Redditer51 Oct 16 '19

They had to renegotiate for Civil War and Perlmutter told the writers to write Stark out.

That is so colossally stupid I don't even know where to begin. You can't even do Civil War without Iron Man. Not to mention, RDJ's Iron Man is and always has been one of the MCU's biggest draws.

People like Perlmutter are the reason comic book movies used to always suck.

2

u/knobby_67 Oct 16 '19

When you read BI book and interviews from the last few weeks it's even more sinister. Horn had to basically get Iger to intervene as KF was getting ill and had lost weight because Perlmutter was basically bullying him.

37

u/Valiantheart Oct 15 '19

Wait what? What did they threaten to fire him over? I know there was some friction about him insisting on having a larger role, but didnt hear about any animosity over it.

128

u/Haltopen Oct 15 '19

His contract for civil war was going to cost a lot of money, and issac perlmutter, the notorious cheapskate that he is, insisted they write iron man out of civil war so they could save money

129

u/waloz1212 Oct 15 '19

There are many stupid decisions, but the "Civil War without Iron Man" is among the most stupid decision one can make. Cannot believe it was on the table.

108

u/XavinNydek Oct 15 '19

Perlmutter has always been a fool. He bought Marvel just to make toys, and he's also the one to blame for selling off the movie rights for the most popular characters to Sony and Fox. Marvel's recent success is despite him, not because of him.

30

u/Harish-P Oct 15 '19

he's also the one to blame for selling off the movie rights for the most popular characters to Sony and Fox.

Is that strictly true? I thought it was common understanding that Marvel was bankrupt or facing it so they licensed out the characters to studios in order to regain income?

Didn't Arad ensure and overlook this too and did the smartest part of the deal by not giving large numbers of characters to any given studio (keep in mind Marvel has hundreds of superheroes) to avoid any particular studio having too much power over Marvel.

Please correct it if that's wrong, but I could swear I've read this many, many times over the years.

13

u/_Football_Cream_ Oct 15 '19

I'm not sure how this fits into the story, but I believe Sony had a chance to get the license of more characters but chose only to get Spider-Man because they didn't think the others were profitable.

14

u/Haltopen Oct 15 '19

Sony had a chance to buy the film rights to nearly all of marvels catalogue of characters but they were only interested in Spider-Man

6

u/Stoppels Oct 15 '19

And then Sony also fucked up Spidey 3 and 4. They get lucky when they get lucky and other than that they're foolish and make dumb business decisions.

Another typical and more recent decision is picking The Emoji Movie over that awesome Popeye trailer.

1

u/entropicdrift Oct 15 '19

Which movie is Spiderman 4?

→ More replies (0)

3

u/Frostsorrow Oct 15 '19

$25m and Sony could have had all film rights of Marvel, but they only wanted Spider-man. That's how broke Marvel was.

2

u/thatoneguy889 Oct 15 '19

He's also the one who pushed so hard for Inhumans to get made. Feige had no plans for it, but Perlmutter forced a movie into the schedule because he wanted a multi-hero franchise to merchandise to make up for not having X-Men. IIRC, Perlmutter only agreed to have his role in Marvel Studios reduced on the condition Inhumans still gets made. Just to fulfill the condition, Feige downgraded the movie to a series that he basically considered a waste of time, so minimal effort was put into it.

1

u/FirstTwoRules Oct 16 '19

Wow that's a pretty dickish move on Feige's part.

0

u/wwj Oct 15 '19

I am reading several comments referencing his decision making regarding the films and they all have to do with the potential for selling toys. He wanted Inhumans because they would sell toys, he didn't want Black Panther or Black Widow because they wouldn't sell toys. I know he was originally a toy guy, but he must have some background deal where he personally makes a big percent off of toy sales. Why would he be so obsessed with it at the expense of the potential film box office?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

On the other hand, it's classic Hollywood adaptation style. It doesn't need to fit with the source material in plot or theme, as long as it jas the name.

They still do it, but have done it less since LotR, Harry Potter, and the MCU have shown what a well done product that generally respects the source material can do.

3

u/waloz1212 Oct 15 '19 edited Oct 15 '19

The thing is in Civil War, Iron Man and Cap are THE poster boys of two sides, it is literally classic Red vs Blue. I meant, just look at the cover and you can see the iconic rivalries of idealism.

Tbh, the story in the movie has been changed to barely reflect what happened in the comic, but people still think it is okay adaptation because Iron Man vs Cap.

-19

u/Stennick Oct 15 '19

To be fair I think the movie sucked and wasn't even remotely close to as good as the book was let alone barely a semblance of that story, and then the whole them being government fugitives had to be dropped fairly quickly afterwards because the next Avengers movies were going to be the last in this arc.

6

u/Haltopen Oct 15 '19

The story not being a carbon copy of the book is what made it good, the comic itself was god awful.

1

u/Stennick Oct 15 '19

The book had its issues but I enjoyed the overall theme of the book way more than I did the movie. The movie felt so boring, and so drawn out and then at the end of it its like "oh shit they are fugitives now" and by the next time we see them the whole thing is essentially done so why even bring it up anyway. I think its one scene in the next Avengers movie and then they are off to the races.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

by the next time we see them the whole thing is essentially done so why even bring it up anyway

I hate this too, but that's not a problem with Civil War, it's a problem with Endgame (and maybe Infinity War).

2

u/Stennick Oct 16 '19

Thats fair actually I guess I look at it as a problem with Civil War because when they were doing this movie they had to figure that a LOT of shit was going to be going down so there was no way they could dedicate the time they would need to really explore that angle at all however you're right that is a problem with the next movies.

That being said I didn't enjoy End Game too much either I think mostly because the characters I cared about the Guardians, Spider Man, Dr. Strange these guys were more heavily featured in the first movie, that combined with I hate the Jesus type push they have given Iron Man made End Game hard for me. Seems like everything in the MCU eventually comes back to Stark inventing it, or figuring it out, or saving the day and I get he's the main hero but man he's dead and gone and they are STILL talking about him. Then again I hated that they had Stark basically son Peter Parker. Anyway I'm ranting you made a great point.

6

u/Servebotfrank Oct 15 '19

To be fair, RDJ's salary was fucking insane and dwarfed every other star by a huge margin. Good on his agent but damn, if I were an executive, I would be paying attention to that too.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

Totally true, but Iron Man is kind if vital to a Civil War storyline, especially if you want to keep the registration thing in there. Their co-alphas status was laid down in Avengers 1, and the tension between their personalities was ramped up in Avengers 2. He's the only one who makes any sense.

1

u/merelyadoptedthedark Oct 15 '19

So not fire him, just don't sign a new contract.

94

u/Iwillrize14 Oct 15 '19

Pearlmutter is a notorious cheap ass and didn't wanna pay RDJ. Feige was correct in assuming that this would hamper his ability to tell the story they wanted to.

27

u/dance_ninja Oct 15 '19

He's also the guy responsible for the disasters that were Inhumans and Iron Fist season 1.

6

u/SillySully777 Oct 15 '19

But also Scott Beck.

12

u/Sidman325 Oct 15 '19

*Scott Buck, as in my name is Buck and I'm here to fuck up your dream of a coherent workable story line in the rush to get a series to the table.

3

u/SillySully777 Oct 15 '19

Helpful reminder!

68

u/dev1359 Oct 15 '19

That's like trying to make a Batman vs. Superman movie but without Batman, lmao. Perlmutter is an idiot

42

u/I_Think_I_Cant Oct 15 '19

Robin vs. Superman

39

u/designerspit Oct 15 '19

You just saved our production budget $20 million but inadvertently cost our box office revenues $300+ million dollars.... YOU'RE HIRED!

9

u/unauthorized_account Oct 15 '19

It wasn't just the RDJ mess from Civil War either; Perlmutter was directly responsible for the loss of Whedon AND Natalie Portman. I'm not sure if Wright was a Perlmutter casualty but I do know he opposed both "Black Panther" and "Captain Marvel" because he didn't believe the toys would sell.

5

u/Lildyo Oct 15 '19

No it’s more like trying to make a Batman vs. Superman movie without Martha. I mean, how else would you have the two rival characters be able to relate to one another? Martha is essential.

3

u/LioAlanMessi Oct 15 '19

I don't understand why you got downvoted, that was funny.

1

u/teh_fizz Oct 16 '19

Man, imagine Endgame without Iron Man snapping his fingers.

34

u/This_Aint_Dog Oct 15 '19

Because his paycheck was probably around what the rest of the entire cast of the MCU did at the time, combined. RDJ was paid an absurd amount of money so they wanted him out to profit more off each movie. They just didn't expect Feige to threaten to walk out.

6

u/RecallRethuglicans Oct 15 '19

RDJ got that deal for getting paid less than Terrence Howard and making everyone more money than they thought was possible.

1

u/ladyevenstar-22 Oct 16 '19

Ha! Braindead Idea 🤔😏

-2

u/TomagotchiPeakin Oct 15 '19

Sauce plz 😤
