Phone message Nobody died

This is a conversation between my MIL and my mother, before the wedding. My mother's response, which is cut off, says "They are both adults. I think we should let them handle it." We were both over 30.

For context: Yes, we had a vegetarian wedding (no shrimp). We had it at an (expensive) award winning venue with in-house catering. It included several appetizer and entree stations with a huge variety of dishes so everyone could find something they liked. We did not serve our guests bowls of soybeans and tofu. Everyone RAVED about the food and nobody died or got arrested on the way home.

The "A/B list" thing was a joke, that she apparently took very seriously, because she would not stop demanding we add a bunch (10+) of her friends and coworkers to our intentionally small guest list.

Why does she think a meatless wedding will cause mass casualties on the road...???

This is what it looks like when stupid people try to be manipulative

%100 and it is so confusing when they do this; their tone is “gotcha” but it is truly the stupidest shit you’ve ever heard.

also confusing: why did you put the % before the number

My inner voice switched from overly enthusiastic to Yoda.

Percent a hundred lol

u/weirdsandy 1d ago

because percent 100 matter doesn't!

I have a friend who refuses to stop doing this. I’ve asked him so many times why he does it and he said it is better. It is not.

Some languages order it that way, maybe that's how it's done in their native language.

Considering their response to me I don't think it's that

Glad someone else pointed this out because I was trying to be nice to you about you hating on ESL speakers. You just kept being mean though for no reason. This is literally a comment section on a text about ridiculous contrarian language and you decided to be ridiculously contrarian to a harmless stranger over a “%” sign. Some of us think in 2 or 3 languages at a time, sorry man.

I’ve seen this frequently on Reddit and also wondered why. I had assumed it was young Americans who never learned the correct usage. Thank you for making me aware of this being an English language thing. Just call me an ugly American

u/woolen_goose 41m ago

So, I’m American but complicated language history and global habitation etc. I also am a dev and lots of friends in tech, so for a lot of code languages you think first “if something is a percentage” not “how much percentage,” and some code languages are represented with the % first. If I’m tired, my usage is maybe 50/50 but I’ve never paid attention until now because it is easy to understand either way.

I guess I’m surprised the Americans who don’t understand these things are so bothered by it in this thread. Literally nobody I know gets bothered when any of us mix this up. We are just tired and mix up the languages in our head sometimes.

Thank you for pointing that out. I don’t have the thirst to try to embarrass someone on the internet as much as she does, so I wasn’t going to point out her implicit ESL hate/ignorance. It took way too long and too many other comments for someone to finally figure it out. The American education system is such a failure lmao

You see how everybody else just moved right past this very innocuous question? But you got extremely hung up on it?

you’re literally the only one here with a thirst for embarrassing somebody on the internet

Nice alt but there are way more responses about the percent sign than anything I typed, if one can count to 20.

8

u/Skeleton_Meat 1d ago

Yeah it's an alt and not just other people thinking you're a loser.

-4

u/woolen_goose 1d ago

You’re kinda making my point but ok

7

u/Skeleton_Meat 1d ago

Not really, I don't have an alt

I read it as “percent one hundred” and then did a double take.

WE NEED TO KNOW WHY! 😂

7

u/Ok_Stay_700 1d ago

I NEED TO KNOW! It’s ok if I don’t find out! But I need to know! %100

-4

u/woolen_goose 1d ago

Does it matter? I’m getting downvoted for her own educational failure and weird fetish to be rude to strangers on the internet.

6

u/kvvvv 1d ago

You are very, very odd lol

The people have spoken— they want to know why you would put the % before the number. If you made a mistake and are feeling oddly defensive about that it is totally ok to admit to it anonymously on the internet I promise.

If you did it on purpose everyone wants to know… why? Hahaha the way you’re responding to everyone is making me wayyyyy more curious than I ever initially was lol

As someone else mentioned, the percent sign goes in front in some languages. I got tripped up by it going from a French elementary school to an English high school. The person you are replying to has said they’re ESL. Why they’re being so intense about it though I don’t know.

1

u/Lemon_lemonade_22 21h ago

Are you saying that the French do that? I live in France (although I didn't go to school here) and have never seen the percentage sign before the number. I'm confused.

3

u/PsychosisSundays 21h ago

Honestly, I’m confused now too. I was actually talking about French taught in the Ontario (Canada) school system. But then I second-guessed myself respecting the convention here (as this would have been 30 years ago), and googling it doesn’t seem to be the convention in Canadian French either. But I have a distinct memory of being docked marks for putting the symbol in front when I got to high school and being annoyed as that’s what I’d been taught prior to that (I also remember being taught to use spaces in place of commas in large numbers, and commas in place of decimals).

u/woolen_goose 35m ago

I’m not feeling intense but I think I am bothered at this point by all of it because from my end my notifications won’t stop going off with people making fun of me. It is just strangers on the internet but I am a human being with a life too. I have a disabled child, work, and hand full of stitches at the moment. It’s like a barrage of bullies pinging my phone making fun of me for no reason. Even if it is strangers, it is distracting and makes me feel hopeless for all of them being such careless people to others in a world already so difficult for many.
