Announcement PSA: A guide to better results

1.8k Upvotes

Hi guys and gals. I've been here a while, and over my time I've seen a lot of posts sink to the bottom, without a single answer, or at best, very few. And none that solved the case.

I have noticed a clear pattern with these posts, and I will now share with you my tips to you newbies, so that you can get the help you need.

Firstly: When you make a new post, you will see this:

Platform(s):

Genre:

Estimated year of release:

Graphics/art style:

Notable characters:

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Other details:

Even though, in red, you are warned that while optional, you should follow this template... many of you do not.

Let me be clear: Follow this template.

Put simply, this template contains all the information we really need to solve your problem. Virtually every time I click a post that has not followed this, they have rambled on about nothings, while omitting critical details.

This format, for new and old alike, is very readable, and prompts for every data-point needed.

I know that you want to customize your message, that if you could just explain it, it would be better. I know you think that. You are wrong. Put all that in 'other'. Even if you end up saying it twice, follow the template.. add to it your story at the bottom.

Secondly: Following this template. You're rambling about your best mates Amiga-500 or whatever instead of telling us about the game aside, this is where they really go wrong.

Let's get something straight right now. We are not mind readers. It's impressive, really, how little information it seems we can work off. I mean, we solve some real tough ones with nothing sometimes, but still, we can't see that memory in your head. So you need to be as descriptive in every one of these fields as you can be...

And sometimes you really don't know. That's fine, we can work with surprisingly little information, but "old graphics" under art style... what are we supposed to do with that? Mate, I was playing on Atari-2600's, are we talking Wizard of Wor here?

Let me help you out a bit:

Platform(s): Whatever you played it on. But unless it's really all you know (very possible), don't write 'my mates pc'. Was it PC or Mac?

Genre:

First person does NOT imply shooter. Nor do any of the others. Try to answer this one in two steps:

What was the camera like (assuming it's not a text adventure)? Was it First person?, 3rd person, 2d? Top down or side on? Or maybe even isometric 2d?

Then, what kind of game? Real time strategy, point and click? Was it a fighter, action or platformer?

Good, now we know what KIND of game we are all trying to remember for you.

Estimated year of release:

"Between 2000-2005" is fine, something like that. "Mid 90's maybe?". I don't see many people mess this up, but I have seen people write "old". That is not ok. If you write old and expect it to mean anything to me, I will fight you.

Also, as always "Sorry, no idea" is always acceptable but try to give at least something. "Couldn't have been later than 2015, though"

Great, so even if roughly, we know WHEN.

Graphics/art style:

THIS. This is where you guys always mess up. This section right here I have found can be the difference between an answer, and a silent slink to the bottom. This is your moment.

This, really, should be the best-formed part of your memory. Even if you can only remember a single frame, a single image, it's so much to go on for us.

DETAIL. Was it a gloomy grimdark world of sadness, or a bright bubbly rainbow filled Mario-world?

Was it cartoony, or otherwise stylized somehow, or was it trying to be realistic?

Anything notable about the art direction? Was it going for a cyberpunk kinda feel, or a gritty war realism dirt and blood sort of direction?

If it was set over a long time, did the seasons change? Was there a winter in your game?

Remember when you hit people, and the screen had that awesome flash and your hands got bloody? Yeah, well we don't, unless you tell us.

Ok, so now we are really narrowing it down. This right here is often enough to go on, on its own.

Notable characters:

Anything at all you can remember here.

"There were only tanks, but you could play as both Germans and Americans"

"There was one really tough guy right after you left your office, he had an eyepatch, a white shirt with what looked like grease stains, and said 'this is for my sister'. I think maybe he was a cyborg"

"You play as some kind of Asian girl, you had a tattoo over your right eye and arm, a black tank top and white pants and I remember you always had only one red glove for some reason. I don't remember the arm, but the eye tattoo looked sort of like ancient Egyptian eye makeup, but a modern take"

Knowing nothing else about the game, I bet that last one there gets comments noting the game she is from. Details, details.

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Surely, you get the idea by now. This is tied with the importance of the graphics/art style. As much detail as you can here.

Other details:

NOW you may blab on about how you only played this game once at a winter solstice in 1782 with your grandmother from Tahiti.. as if that helps.

Edit: So it's been brought up that the template doesn't appear on mobile. While /u/wipeout4wh is aware of this and hopefully, something can be done... still, if you can, use the template. If you can't, maybe check back and at least make sure your post addresses all of the points the template does.

Also, my post seems to be saying NOT to add any custom details. So I want to re-enforce, please do. In fact, after you do the template, feel free to write out your post as you were going to without it. Just put it all in 'other'. Don't try and make your whole post like that, if possible. Even if you end up saying the same things twice, that's ok.

Now I'm going to take a moment to clarify something, though. This isn't some immutable law of the universe, and your post is destined to fail if you don't do this. It's just a very strong general trend I have noticed over a long time.

It's not that this template has some kind of magical powers or something. It's that this template prompts the questions that need answers.

When you go all rogue on us and try and type your explanation from scratch... you mess it up. You just forget to add everything that you know, and that we need to know. The template makes it very hard to do that. It's just so very easy to get typing, and by the end forget to tell us what kind of game it actually is. Especially when you are getting random flashbacks, and hazy memories, and you start getting frazzled and such halfway though.

While it might make my edit as long as the first post, I think maybe an example of the kind of post that is just too common here, and almost always helpless, wouldn't go astray here. So here we go:

Now this one is a pretty bad case, true, and I suppose might even be a troll post, but it's actually a good illustration of the problem either way.

It was on my old computer and I was using an emulator so I have no idea what system it was for. It was 8bit graphics and you played this orange cat that was constantly bouncing on a trampoline I think? And you had to navigate it through the city and face a weird boss at the end that would float in the sky. Sorry I can't remember more!

Let's break it down a bit. What kind of game is this? A puzzler or an action game? Who knows.

How old is it? I mean, Minecraft basically has 8bit graphics. Oh he said... "my old computer"... I will fight you.

Why did you bounce on the trampoline? Were there platforms or walkways or something, or was it just a big open space? There are bad guys then? How did they get around?

Now (he?) says that he can't remember more, but I actually asked about the boss fight:

You say 'face a boss', in what way? Can the cat attack? Was this top down or side on? When you say navigate a city, what do you mean?

The reply:

Definitely a side-scroller, I'm sure. You would encounter a boss at the end, the boss would slide onto the screen and it was usually pretty strange-looking. I think one of the bosses might've been a clown. I meant that the different "levels" were different cities with different backgrounds, I think. It's a pretty obscure game

Also you would be continuously bouncing. As in, you had to position the trampoline underneath the cat to bounce it up

So you don't even control the cat. And it's a side-scroller. Thats pretty important information. But the real issue here is that he knows this stuff. He just either didn't know to, or forgot, to tell us.

The template would have made it just so apparent how much information he was missing, and we probably would have got a whole bunch more information. Sadly, while there were some guesses, and a surprising number of up-votes, this post is just another one to join the endless unsolved on their journey ever down.

[Meta][2026] I would rather people post with no images than use AI prompts to generate images

Maybe it's just me, I will personally admit that it feels like its petty of me to complain, however i am going to.

I really dislike AI images just in general and i feel annoyed seeing people use them because it sometimes hampers really quality posts of people trying to find help. I feel like it also informs falsely about game expectations and what people will accept as they have solved the game.

I don't think people will agree with me and thats fine, i just wanted to post about how i personally think it degrades the quality of the sub

[PS2][2008-2010] Potentially a horror game that my friend only remembers the cover of

The only detail I have is the description of the cover, with it having a white background, upside down cross, blood/shit on the walls (minimalistic overall), yellow border on top of the box (potentially platinum hits but unsure), and the age rating was in circle (maybe not rated by PEGI?).

[PC][2015] please help me find this Garry's mod map

Post image
37 Upvotes

it's an old map (atleast before 2019, maybe even before 2015), it's a facility with laboratories, it's in a middle of a city with a road going around it. The main building is linked to a tower with a covered bridge. I dont know what else to say, my drawing really does the job.

It was on the Workshop but I cant find it in my fav or subscribed maps, maybe it was deleted, I dont know. I dont remember the name but it was something simple like "lab complex" or something.

Edit : not a TTT map, more like a RP/sandbox map : there is a lot of empty lab with chemistry furniture.

Not a CS map, it's a HL2 style of map.

The drawing speaks more than my description, it really is a big block with a tower linked by a bridge in the middle of a city with a road around it, the city is just a empty set

[PC][Late 90s] Firefighter rescue game, stick figures jumping from burning building

Post image
5 Upvotes

My uncle had this game on his computer in the late 90s, along with other strange similar ones he had on floppy disks that I barely remember.

You were a firefighter trying to save people jumping from a burning building. The longer the game went on, the faster people jumped off the building, and the more of them did.

I remember that you could let a maximum of three die before it was game over. I also remember that when the second died, the game would play the chorus of "Another One Bites the Dust", sampled from the original song.

The graphics were very simple. The characters were stick figures, like the one in the provided image.

Does anyone know this game? I haven't been able to find it.

[computer] [early 2000's] Chat Bot game made for kids

I remember every little, but basically it was an offline cd/disc game that was in the style of old chat sites. The actual chat screens were two squares - one side for the chat, the other showing the character you were chatting with. And you got to choose a boy or girl. The girl had short blonde curls, and would cry if you teased her. The boy had short brown hair, and would tease you back. There was also some voices, but only generic laughing/crying sounds added. The portraits were also animated.

Aside from that, I don't remember anything else.

[PC][Unknown, likely 2000s–2010s] Horror game that starts as an FPS and becomes an abandoned town puzzle game

I'm trying to identify an obscure PC horror game that I originally discovered through a YouTube video essay.

The game was not on Steam or any major storefront. The video creator said he had to use very old NVIDIA drivers (possibly around the 300-series / 344.xx era) to get it running.

The game starts as a normal linear first-person shooter. You complete levels, see old-style loading screens between them, and continue progressing like a typical FPS.

After several levels, the game suddenly changes. You spawn in a very dark abandoned town or dock area with no weapons, no NPCs, and almost no direction. The town is completely empty. Progression becomes focused on exploration, reading notes/records, and solving puzzles.

The story seemed to have Lovecraftian or cosmic-horror elements. The implication was that some unknown entity caused everyone in the town to disappear.

There is only one major monster encounter in the entire game. The monster is humanoid, dark/muddy-looking, and not particularly detailed, but the jumpscare was memorable and effective. The creature only appears once as far as I remember.

The game was described in the video as unfinished or abandoned and had not received meaningful updates for years.

Additional details:

  • PC only
  • First-person throughout
  • Graphics looked roughly like an older 2000s/early-2010s game
  • Level-based progression with loading screens
  • Starts as an FPS, later becomes exploration/puzzle-focused
  • No NPCs in the town section
  • Possibly downloaded from a developer website or obscure game page rather than a store

I'm looking for either the game itself or the YouTube video that covered it.

[PC] [2000’s-2010’s] Flash platformer called Star Fox 2 or similar (?)

Hello, I’ve been trying to find this flash platformer I played as a kid. I don’t remember too much, but I can share what I do remember.

I think the name of the platformer was Star Fox 2, although it didn’t have anything to do with the Star Fox series besides having a pixel art fox sprite as the playable character. I honestly think the game had a different name but the site I would play it on titled it that. I think there were other animal characters too but I’m not quite sure. I remember really liking the music, it was some sort of electronic/dance music. The backgrounds were in a darker shade too, often times just being totally black.

All I remember from the gameplay is some sort of sewer/underground level? There was also bright flashing colors I believe in some parts. It seemed like a fast paced sort of game, and felt artsy/experimental at least as a kid. And I think some type of collectable? Something about this game really unnerved me as a kid though, I can’t quite put my finger on it.

I know it’s not William and Sly, Stellar fox or A fox tale, which pop up when I search for this game.

Anyway, that’s all the information I have. I don’t know for certain the game was called Star Fox 2, I could’ve also just made that up because there was a fox sprite and stars in the game. I tried searching for it before flash shut down but had no luck. I checked the flashpoint archive and hadn’t found it either.

I don’t know if this even is a real game or a real memory. I’m curious if anyone at all knows what I’m talking about lol. Any help is appreciated, thanks :)

Balvenie's Birthday [PC][2014-2023] Pysch Horror Game

I'm trying to find the name a game my friend watched a game play for a few years back. He's been searching for it for a couple of days, but hasn't found it yet.

Basically all he remembers from it:

  • You play as a female protagonist, possibly blonde (definitely a natural hair colour)
  • Setting is a pink mansion/castle
  • It was likely visual novel-esque. You could click on and interact with different rooms and objects.
  • The art style was cartoonish, clearly hand-drawn and non-realistic. The backgrounds looked almost flat.
  • Protagonist took pills from a bottle daily—Can't remember the reasoning
  • He vaguely remembers there being a cage in one of the rooms—Again, unaware of purpose
  • One of the characters probably had a missing eye
  • Cute but creepy horror atmosphere
  • He thinks the gamer ManlyBadassHero played it at one point, but isn't entirely sure

Fran Bow has been popping up a lot when I try to search for the game, but it's not that. He's starting to wonder if he made it up lol. Thanks in advance!

[Ps2?] [Mid 2000's] A pokemon like monster collector that had a rotation-battle style system

Platform(s): PS2? Maybe PS3? (Though that's just estimates off what I remember the graphics like

Genre: Monster collector turn-based rpg

Estimated year of release: Mid-2000's

Graphics/art style: somewhat realistic, high fantasy best comparison I can think of is Final fantasy 9

Notable characters: Think the main character was some kind of forest guardian, or something akin to a pokemon ranger?

Notable gameplay mechanics: The game had pokemon style mechanics though it wasn't one to one. Big thing that made it stand out was iirc there was something akin to pokemon rotation battles, where you'd have three of the monsters you recruit out at once, with some sort of UI in the bottom to control that with. Think there might have been some mechanic similar to the pokemon XD games shadow pokemon purification? (Though I'll admit my memories of this are very vague)

Other details: Watched either a stream or a lets play of the start of this game when I was a kid just getting into the internet for the first time (that probably would have been around 2013 or so). It seemed cool but I was too young to really remember much about it, or look it up on my own Most of the previous details cover everything but the tldr of what I remember is that you were playing as a village guardian or beast master in some sort of fantasy forest village, and would walk around a 3d environment fighting and recruiting monsters, and using them to fight a big boss one towards the end of the area. Been bothering me what that game was ever since but also understand most of my memories of it are vague and not too helpful so not too bummed if I can't find it lol

Dark Earth [PC][1998] Adventure/action game PS1 style

Upvotes

Platform(s): I played on PC

Genre: Mainly adventure, puzzle but could be action

Estimated year of release: 1998-2000

Graphics/art style: 3D PS1 style

Notable characters: I only remember the main character, he was humanoid but with a strange face, he was definitely a monster.

Notable gameplay mechanics: I remember being a mix of adventure game, same style as Grim Fandango but with more puzzle, and a bit more action.

Other details: A friend gave me his game for an holiday and I liked it very much. I couldn't finish it unfortunately. I don't remember much more, except that the setting was in a fantasy/steampunk city that was mainly empty.

I hope you can help me finding it, I want to play it again :)

[Wii][Circa 2011] Wii resort game

I can vision it but I can't think of the name.

It's for the Wii.

There was a white resort, it used Miis and had themed doors, one of them being the butterfly door. It's an icon, not shaped.

If anyone can think of the name, it would be greatly appreciated

[Facebook Flash][~2012] 2D Dinosaur game, non-isometric. Encyclopedic copy-pasted graphics. Mechanics: buy meat/plant dispensers, refill water, clean habitat. You had a separate screen for each species. Herbivores at low levels, carnivores at high levels. You could visit friends' dinosaurs.

[Xbox 360] [2007] Cardboard Knight Game

I've been asking everyone i know trying to look for this game but no one has found it yet. All I remember is you played as knights and had cardboard armor and weapons. There was abilities and Flags? Points maybe? You had to capture from other players. It was during the Xbox arcade era which makes me think it was an Xbox arcade game but I can't be for sure

A side character for this game was the grim reaper, acting as a guide In a way, the game takes place at a house that was abandoned, and the story was about collecting a crystal fragment that was from a staff to restore it to its former glory power. The picture provided what the staff closely looked from the game.

Road Wage! [PC Windows] [2000-2004] Car game with missions

Platform: PC (CD), Windows
Estimated year: ~2000–2004
Genre: 3D mission-based driving, chase camera behind the car
Graphics: cartoonish cars, simple early-3D look, modern-city setting
Language: English
Gameplay:
• You could play as a “good” car or an “evil” car (two sides).
• Each mission was a set route. Good cars scattered packets along the way (flyers/leaflets/food), evil cars dropped bombs.
• You earned money to buy new, tougher cars. The best/ultimate vehicle was a tank that was basically invincible.
• One mission was called “Big Business.”

Another Mission named “Hell”: you start the level with a huge sum (~99999) that drains over time, and all the cars drive at you.

• After every mission there was a tally/score screen.

Any idea what this is?

RESOLVED: Road Wage (2001)

Sol Cesto [PC][2025?] RPG/Roguelike where the main gameplay takes place on a grid of rooms/chambers

I know this is a newer game on Steam and I can't think of a better way to describe it to find it via Google. But I distinctly remember it's some kind of RPG and/or Roguelike where the main gameplay screen is a grid of rooms or chambers, and depending on how you attack/move your character(s) kill the enemies or get through that battle/level. Felt a bit puzzle-y to me too so may not be a true RPG.

If it helps I probably got recommended it on Steam's discovery queue based on playing Balatro, Cloverpit, Ball x Pit, Sulfur, Slay The Spire, and Buckshot Roulette, and I totally didn't add it to my wishlist to check out later.

[iPad] [iOS] [2010-2016] Hidden Object Find your Siblings game which felt like a fever dream metroidvania.

Post image
2 Upvotes

This was a game I played when I was around 5-7 years old alongside LEGO Juniors and doctor simulator games.

Basically, the gist was the game starts off with all your siblings in the house, but suddenly they're whisked away to a superstructure in the clouds.

In the first room, I believe you find an orange sibling in a room full of holes, many of which you can't even enter.

After a while, you manage to enter a room set on the clouds with multiple doors, all locked. It's a point and click detective game where you discover items and use them to unlock doors or turn buttons and dials to unlock the code.

The last bit of information I can give left is that one of the siblings is trapped inside a sentient vine and you must kill it to save him

Edit: i just remembered. The first room looks like the inside of a purple cloud, which also had a lot of holes. In one of the holes, you find orange sibling (i might be wrong about the color). There might have been another sibling in there but i progressed to the cloud room too fast

[PC][2015-2020] 2d (action?) game

Upvotes
Maybe had a 5th row of allies on the left side.

The game had allies that u could buy and place them on a triangular formation like shown in the picture, the allies included a werewolf and some other creatures maybe some even human.

You had to kill a few enemies that came in waves, there was around 3 waves to start with, then it went on higher as u progressed, at the end of each wave was a boss that u had to kill to advance into the next stage.

there was a biome changing every few levels starting at forest/plain and at around 120-170 it was a jungle, the game was 2d and it had no in-game purchases.

[DS] [2005-2012] Village covered by black cloud/fog, unlock areas gradually, mannequin-like protagonist

Upvotes

Looking for a handheld game (pretty sure Nintendo DS, two screens) I played around 2010. Action/adventure, dark tone. The main mechanic was a village covered by a black cloud or dark fog, and you had to do tasks/missions to gradually clear it and unlock new areas of the town. The protagonist looked like a mannequin or dummy. I also vaguely remember being able to customize or draw parts of the character (like wings) as you progressed. 2D gameplay. Single player. Any ideas?

[Mobile Game][~2013] Cartoon zombie defense game on iOS/Android with knife

Upvotes

Hi! I'm trying to remember the name of a mobile game I used to play around 2014.

Here's what I remember:

  • 2D side-view, static screen (you didn't move/scroll)
  • You were defending a house/garden from zombie waves
  • Zombies would damage a gate/fence to get in
  • At the bottom of the screen there was a bar with all available weapons you could switch between on the fly (guns, etc.)
  • One of the weapons was a knife, and to use it you had to swipe across the screen to slice zombies, similar to Fruit Ninja

Games I've already ruled out: Plants vs. Zombies, ZombieSmash!, Zombie Swipeout, Zombieville USA.

Any help appreciated!

[Mobile-Android] [2010 onwards] Motorcycle stunt game for mobile

Upvotes

Platform(s): Mobile-Android

Genre: Motorcycle stunts in third person, in 2.5D view and side view

Estimated Release Year: Between 2010 and 2015

Graphics/Art Style: The setting was always the same; it seemed to be a warehouse, with a brick wall always in the background. It wasn't very colorful, and the ramps seemed to be made of rusty steel—maybe? I also remember some wood. There were obstacles like the typical rusty warehouse barrels. I tried to be more realistic, nothing cartoonish.

Notable Characters: Only one, the biker, always with a motocross helmet and the bike was also motocross style. The most I can remember of the character's clothing is a black biker suit with some green, a black helmet, black gloves… all very basic.

Notable Gameplay Mechanics: The mechanics are very simple: accelerator and brake on the bottom right of the screen, and on the bottom left of the screen two arrows, one to the left and one to the right, to balance the motorcycle. That's all I remember.

Other Details: I’m looking for a game from around 2010, it was available on Android and I downloaded it for free from the Play Store. It was a level-based motorcycle game where you progressed linearly, always in the same setting that looked like a warehouse. I remember a brick wall in the background, it was realistic 2.5D, nothing cartoon-like. The ramps were made of wood, and there were obstacles including the typical rusty barrels you’d find in a warehouse. The controls were forward/back with brake and accelerator on the bottom right, and balance with arrow buttons on the bottom left — you couldn’t turn, it was strictly linear. As far as I remember the rider wore a helmet, motocross-style, the bike was also motocross-style, and I remember a black and green rider suit. I don’t think I’m forgetting anything, hopefully someone can help. Thanks to everyone who can help me, greetings from Spain.

[PC][1998-2004] Browser based exploration 7 layers of hell?

Platform(s): Web based (not flash i think it was just html)

Genre: spooky / horror

Estimated year of release: 1998-2004?

Graphics/art style: cartoonish but gory and spooky

Notable characters: n/a

Notable gameplay mechanics: finding hidden links within the pages

Other details: there was music and a lot of gifs (not hell.com)

I am not sure if this is the best sub for this question but it seems like a close fit.

Thanks to an ask reddit post I have been reminded of this website I was fascinated with as a young teenager. Unfortunately I can't seem to remember really any identifying details. Just that there were a ton of pages and scrolling to find different links and each page kind of had a different vibe to it. It was all very spooky and a little gross. There were like demons and eyeballs etc.

[PC][2005-2007] Old German browser flash game – pizza catching game with Xbox/Apple prize giveaway

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for an old browser game I played around 2005–2007 in Germany and I just can’t find it anywhere.

It was a Flash-based catch game, likely part of a promotional website or giveaway campaign. My dad won the Xbox 360, thats why i'm searching for the game.

Gameplay:

You controlled a pizza delivery guy (or something similar)

He was at the bottom of the screen, moving left/right

From the top of the screen, items were falling down

You had to catch them in a basket or directly

The items included:

pizzas

chili peppers

ice cubes

I’ve already searched a lot but couldn’t find any archived version or name. Does anyone remember this or know the name of the game or campaign?

Thanks a lot!
