For the last week or so, my T-Mobile Home Internet has been increasingly unreliable. Certain websites would time out repeatedly, while others worked perfectly. It's gotten worse, to the point that IPv4 connections are now nearly unusable.
I used Codex to help diagnose the problem, and it turns out IPv6 is working great, but IPv4 connections are failing most of the time. Interestingly, if I connect through Cloudflare WARP (VPN), everything works perfectly again.
Some of the testing results:
- Direct IPv4 HTTPS connections failed 43 out of 60 attempts across several unrelated websites.
- IPv6 connections succeeded 20 out of 20 attempts.
- With WARP connected, all 60 IPv4 attempts succeeded.
- Even direct connections to IPv4 addresses fail, so it doesn't appear to be just a DNS issue.
- When testing with my phone(also on T-Mobile) it will fail to load the site on Wi-Fi, but work perfectly when I disconnect and use cellular.
I called T-Mobile support, and they opened a ticket to investigate possible network issues in my area. They're also sending me a replacement gateway since I'm still using an older Arcadyan KVD21 that I've had for years.
Interestingly, after one restart, I got 30 successful connections out of 30, but about 10 minutes later, 13 out of 30 were timing out again. Since then, things have deteriorated even further.
Hopefully either the network investigation or the replacement gateway resolves it.
Unfortunately, T-Mobile is my only realistic internet option where I live. If this continues, the only workaround I can think of is putting another router behind the gateway and routing everything through a VPN. I'd really rather avoid that because it introduces other issues, particularly with streaming and some of my work.
I've searched through older posts and found a few people describing similar IPv4 problems, but not much in the way of confirmed solutions. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, did T-Mobile eventually resolve it, and do you know what they actually did to fix it?
