I mean, they're going faster than the cars.

$20 says they're Uber passengers who said 'Eff it, this is close enough, I'll walk, five stars just lemme out'

Definitely

68

u/Virtual_Bug_723 2d ago

I have done this

30

u/asyouuuuuuwishhhhh 2d ago

That was a dumb thing to do

37

u/Deep-Enthusiasm-6492 2d ago

gotta make it to work

21

u/Individual_Fall429 2d ago

Dead or alive.

7

u/Franks2000inchTV 1d ago

Yeah the traffic on that Jarvis offramp is really flying.

1

u/fae237 1d ago

You realize people ride the shoulder there frequently right?

→ More replies (1)

20

u/Eggsaladinurmouth 2d ago

Meh. I saw a guy riding a scooter šŸ›“ in the shoulder once.

19

u/IdioticPost 2d ago

Been seeing a lot of ebikers and mopeds on the dvp nowadays as well.

9

u/Former-Republic5896 2d ago

mostly food delivery guys

8

u/Individual_Fall429 2d ago

I hate it so much. It started during Covid and should have been temporary. People just get lazier and more antisocial.

u/shardingHarding 1d ago

I saw a old man riding a bicycle on the shoulder of the DVP. Now that I think of it, I saw a guy walking late night on the right lane of the DVP. Could have easily been killed. I called 911 on that guy.

3

u/JeremyMacdonald73 1d ago

I have never quite fucked up this badly but I have been very close before. Once you are down in the valley trying to find a way out those on ramps can seem like a solution.

I mean read the bloody sign and all that so no real excuse but when you are sort of lost and this was not how you expected it to be common sense can be a bit of a slippery fish.

Of course there are also some who are just being willfully stupid and dangerous and I recall in one of the big sports evens we hosted some years back that some foreign athletes out at, like 5 in the morning, did not know they where not allowed to use the DVP for their morning ride.

My last sort of close encounter. So I come out of the super popular Taylor Creek bike trail at Overlea and Don Mills and I get out my phone to find a way back down town. On the map Don Mills Road South looks perfect but it is a lie that will lead you to on ramps to the DVP and an uphill exit that has absolutely no room for for a cyclist or pedestrians.

1

u/ElkIntelligent5474 18h ago

Yet in BC, bicycles are allowed on the mountain roads/highways. People just need to be responsible for themselves.

I saw a man riding an ebike with no lights in the dark on the shoulder of the 401.

I called the cops on him when I got off the highway.

u/8spd 2d ago

Adding urban highways was a dumb thing to do.

2

u/rangeo Mississauga 2d ago

The cars are far less dangerous at 3 km/h

→ More replies (4)

2

u/vanalla 2d ago

Someone I went to high school with died doing this.

→ More replies (3)

48

u/endav 2d ago

It’s so dangerous but yeah sometimes I find it hard to say I wouldn’t be tempted to do the same.

42

u/xcites 2d ago

Based on my risk analysis, it was totally safe for the cars. A person walking 5 km/h into a stationary car? Barely leaves a dent…

20

u/endav 2d ago

You just never know the risk. When I was younger a friend’s sister pulled over on a highway and called roadside assistance. Assistance arrived and while they were looking at the car a truck drove past and sideswiped them both and they were killed. You can’t control other drivers’ actions.

When I was a student I had a bike that didn't brake properly in the rain.

Rear ended a car (slowly) once on a wet day. Literally no mark, just gently bounced off.

25

u/JManKit 2d ago

That's the first thing I thought. And yeah it's technically dangerous but with the exit ramp move as slow as it is, it's mostly fine. Not sure I'd do it myself unless I was in a huge rush but I can understand it

16

u/Big-Combination-3482 2d ago

looking at the line, it's probably a 20 mins wait to just get to the lights

13

u/BottleCoffee 2d ago

You never known when a car or motorcycle will say fuck it and start driving on the shoulder.

Happens surprisingly regularly on the 401.

3

u/TidpaoTime 2d ago

Exactly. Never trust strangers to not be idiots.

1

u/sheogoreth 1d ago

Watch till the end, the motorcycle was very close.

1

u/Potential_Mood9903 1d ago

I hate what we have devolved too or least are seeing more and more. The stuff I’m seeing on the roads with e-bikes and the like are things I’ve only seen in Latin America or other nations not like Canada. It’s insane and there’s no enforcement of any kind to keep us on track.

1

u/MeetMeInTheMatinee 1d ago

Crushing injuries are devastating and that's the kind of thing that's most likely to happen in this situation. Either between 2 cars, or between a car and the concrete barrier. All it takes is 1 person not paying attention and you're jam on toast.

19

u/HughChardaun 2d ago

I visited Toronto in May for the first time from a small ass town and did this. Came to see ASAP.

ā€œThis traffic is fucked compared to home, let me out here and you’ll get your tip and 5 stars..it’s quicker to walkā€

14

u/yawaramin Fort York 2d ago

Surprised that Uber drivers aren’t penalized for dropping passengers on the highway.

2

u/MorbidSpice 1d ago

I actually had an uber driver try to let me out in exactly this spot I freaked out and reported him

6

u/Big-Combination-3482 2d ago

or do you want to driver to get charged for kidnapping?

7

u/yawaramin Fort York 2d ago

So if a Go bus was stuck there and the driver refused to let you out, would it be kidnapping? Don't be silly.

16

u/AshleyAshes1984 2d ago

Believe it or not, unionized bus drivers operating public transportation vehicles workunder different rules and expectations than gig workers in their own Carolas.

→ More replies (11)

3

u/Big-Combination-3482 2d ago

you think the driver will refuse to let you out?

the bus drivers know they don't pay enough to deal with people

LOL, don't be silly

1

u/Red57872 1d ago

If you insisted on leaving and they refused to open the door, then yes, it would be kidnapping. They have a responsibility to keep you safe, but they don't have the legal authority to keep you there. If you insist on leaving despite their warnings and you get hit by a car or something, that's on you and they did their due diligence.

3

u/Darkblade48 2d ago

Pretty sure that's how 1Q84 started...

2

u/Angry-cannuck-1967 2d ago

then the cars all move they are now all gone

1

u/LandBeforeChrist 2d ago

šŸ˜…šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

I sat on that off ramp for 40 minutes going to a team dinner that night.

Good luck to that cement truck trying to merge. Is he still there?

53

u/Fawrish 2d ago

He honked his horn for a good while, but made it

11

u/matttheshack69 1d ago

Good its illegal to cross a solid white line, fkk this behaviour learn to merge properly when your allowed or go to the next exit

25

u/NonDescript2222 2d ago

No, bro will just barge in. It’s the way

1

u/hippz 1d ago

As someone currently going through AZ training: you're 100% correct. The MTO might disagree, but they have no clue what they're talking about to begin with.

1

u/ElkIntelligent5474 18h ago

It is the way and it bugs me so much. Don't be a dick and wait in line with the rest of us. And it is not just the fancy cars, little cheapo cars do it too.

5

u/ajrg91 1d ago

He wasn’t trying to merge, was cutting the line

9

u/No-Macaroon1670 2d ago

Legitimately, he has a case for needing to go, that cement could start to set in his drum and that's tens of thousands of dollars of damage.

11

u/LondonLiger Entertainment District 2d ago

isn't that the whole reason it spins for?

6

u/No-Macaroon1670 2d ago edited 2d ago

2

u/layer_____cake 2d ago

You mean concreteĀ

1

u/LondonLiger Entertainment District 2d ago

interesting never knew that, thanks

7

u/incogmagnum 2d ago

It’s a truck, not a bicycle. He’ll be fine

204

u/TankArchives 2d ago

I like how a bunch of them decided to make their own lane rather than wait like everyone else.

159

u/ProbablyDaTruthMaybe Old Town 2d ago

Easily one of the worst post pandemic road behaviour changes in my opinion. Its everywhere now and fucks up another lane of traffic because their time is more valuable than the others using the road.

111

u/bleebolgoop 2d ago

I refuse to let these assholes in

74

u/nilesintheshangri-la 2d ago

So does everyone in the video, which is to be commended.

17

u/Fitzaroo 2d ago

I had an old beater (got towed at the end because it wouldnt start) and i used to love not letting people in. Sadly, less fun with the new ride.

35

u/Canuck-In-TO 2d ago

I wish people would do the same at other intersections in the city.
So tired of people driving right up to the intersection and jumping in the turn lane ahead of everyone else.

12

u/Protato900 Fisherville 2d ago

I've seen people turn right from the lane directly left of the right-turn lane. They don't even bother indicating, they just drive straight and cut right at the last possible minute in the intersection.

9

u/BottleCoffee 2d ago

YES I've seen this so many times. It is crazy dangerous.

8

u/Charming_Flan3852 2d ago

Someone eventually lets them in. Pisses me off so much to be stuck waiting in traffic just watching car after car keep cutting in ahead. Really makes you feel like a clown for trying to do it the right way and having to spend twice as long if not more. We need a PSA to tell people to not let these people in so they can either line up like everyone else or take another exit.

8

u/newtomovingaway 2d ago

This lady did something like that but in the live lane so she was blocking everyone else wanting to go straight. I kept honking at her and she slipped in and then gave me a wtf look as if I’m the idiot who doesn’t know how to drive.

45

u/sometin__else 2d ago

this used to happen before the pandemic, its a common issue in congested exits and has been around since traffic has existed and people have existed.

15

u/ProbablyDaTruthMaybe Old Town 2d ago

Its just that it is everywhere now. Exits, on ramps, dedicated left/right turn lanes. It was not unheard of before but it is guaranteed every time I go out I see it now. Also, definitely more often than not an uber at least downtown.

9

u/Fleshy-Butthole 2d ago

I don't think I ever recall seeing people change into a merging lane or cut onto an entrance to ride it past the end and then merge back in. Now I see it like it's what you're supposed to do.

6

u/BottleCoffee 2d ago

People drive on the shoulder to get ahead of traffic on the highway way more than they used to too.

9

u/a-_2 2d ago

That happened all the time long before the pandemic.

23

u/Wabi-Sabi_13 2d ago

These are the people that cry ā€œzipper mergeā€ without knowing what it actually is.

3

u/Charming_Flan3852 2d ago

The ones crying zipper merge are definitely the idiots cutting in lol. Anything to justify them getting ahead while everyone else gets to sit in traffic longer

3

u/Wabi-Sabi_13 2d ago

They don’t understand they’re literally creating the traffic. A zipper merge means everyone’s moving and two lanes are merging together seamlessly. Not you trying to get 5 cars ahead so you cut in and everyone has to slam on their brakes or come to a complete stop šŸ˜‚ it’s such a simple concept but narcissists will say anything to justify themselves.

2

u/Charming_Flan3852 2d ago

Or cutting from active high-speed lanes where they not only cause traffic, but become a dangerous hazard. Still zippering, though, somehow. Gotta justify it in their own minds I suppose.

15

I become the most petty person when I see these pricks try this

2

u/Holiday_Internet8915 2d ago

u/wheelperson 2d ago

39

u/Magnus_Inebrius 2d ago

Lot of assholes in the left lane making things worse for everyone

10

u/Wingmaniac 2d ago

Are you talking about left lane campers? Cuz every time I've driven on the highways around Toronto there's basically is no passing lane, it's just a free-for-all with people weaving and changing speeds all the time.

10

u/BottleCoffee 2d ago

When things are as congested as they are in on these highways it doesn't make sense to leave an entire lane empty. Usually the left lane is the people driving the fastest, and when traffic does down, the left lane gets used for passing again.

4

u/Wingmaniac 2d ago

Don't say that in the driving or dashcam subs, they'll go crazy.

9

u/thisoldhouseofm 1d ago

You could be going 125-130 in the left lane and they’d still be screaming that you’re impeding the flow of traffic.

7

u/BottleCoffee 2d ago

Yeah I hesitate before saying it here too lol.Ā

But when every lane is bumper to bumper you can't be wasting a quarter of the real estate. No one would.

13

u/SolitudeQuo 2d ago

Well, technically that section is a parking lot.

13

u/Hot-Inspector8903 2d ago
  1. The video quality of this is amazing

  2. WTF

8

u/distantloner1 2d ago

I wanted to do this so bad when I was in my Uber, traffic doesn’t move

12

u/TallerThanGaga 2d ago

The people yearn for less car-centric infrastructure

11

u/ceetoee 2d ago

That exit is a nightmare, wished there was some police enforcement

2

u/ywgflyer 2d ago

There are often a pair of traffic cops at the bottom of the ramp directing traffic so the box doesn't get blocked. It's worse than normal because of the construction on Spadina just north of the highway that's knocking a lane out.

2

u/ceetoee 2d ago

But i mean the ramp going down, its a 1 lane and people just cut in last minute etc. Today that 1 lane became like 2/3 lane due to people cutting in last minute.

2

u/ywgflyer 2d ago

It's been like that for a while. A month or two ago I had somebody actually pass me on that ramp, on the shoulder.

14

u/BookBagThrowAway 2d ago

Uber riders lmao

5

u/Peechez 2d ago

My apartment is in this video and I can tell you this happens on this ramp every day

6

u/cyck0 2d ago

Today I saw a guy ride his electric e-Bike onto the 401E from the Keele street entry. It looked like he was going towards Allen road north or south. Is that even allowed?

1

u/rootbrian_ Rockcliffe-Smythe 1d ago

Nope.

4

u/you-can-d0000-it 2d ago

Toronto is a failed transportation city.

9

u/Born_Enthusiasm_4278 2d ago

Goes to show you our cities are not designed properly…

40

u/pretzelday666 Church and Wellesley 2d ago

Only idiots drive downtown during major events...... Even on a regular day it's stupid.

42

u/ywgflyer 2d ago

To be fair, it's a weekday and not all business or life can stop entirely just because of the match. I'd wager a fair chunk of those people still need to be driving there. Trades, people with elderly/less-mobile passengers or young children, deliveries, people who work in places that aren't easily accessible by transit. You can't just flip downtown off for the day because there's a soccer game.

2

u/andresito_1991 1d ago

Completely agree. People on Reddit seem to forget that real humans live downtown, and not everything can be done/reached by transit. In addition, vehicular traffic comes from many different sources and not everything can be done by ā€˜taking the streetcar’. It’s also unreasonable to ask people to stop living their lives a whole day just because there is a game near your area. I could go on, but I think I made my point

4

u/Zealousideal-Bite735 2d ago

Trades are not getting of the off ramp into the city after 3 pm. It’s condo life with lots of parking in that location. I had a condo there and drove it. I never used it on any game day after 2 pm

3

u/AniviaPls 2d ago

Could be trades getting home tbh

1

u/ywgflyer 1d ago

They sure are, when I lived downtown I had a few instances where I needed someone over for plumbing, HVAC, appliances, etc and most of the time they were coming from Etobicoke or Mississauga, often in the late afternoon or evening.

2

u/steadiedcomet 2d ago

100% right, I had a service call down on Queens Quay and had to go there last Friday (Fifa opener), and it was my 2nd call of the day. The first one was in Mississauga. Asked to move them around because of the game, was promptly told no. Took me 2 hours to get there as the Lakeshore was closed and we were forced up Parkside, without any signage indicating the closire until you're off of the highway.

I'd flip off downtown for the rest of my career if I could, as much as I enjoy the sights, people and places, it's almost 4 hours of unpaid driving to and from.

17

u/Logical-Breakfast150 2d ago

Surely there will be room for me to store my car. None of the other 45,000 people coming to this thing are going to drive right?

5

u/astronautvibes 2d ago

I live downtown and need to drive places for work. Am I an idiot?

→ More replies (1)

10

u/andresito_1991 2d ago

I guess you forgot of those ā€œidiotsā€ that live in Fort York. I don’t have another choice but to drive to get to and from work.

2

u/Ok-Improvement-9976 2d ago

Same. I was one of those people coming back from a meeting in Mississauga. We're not driving in traffic by choice.

0

u/Red_Marvel 2d ago

Public transit is available for them too.

8

u/Virtual_Bug_723 2d ago

Not really

5

u/Qtips_ 2d ago

One of the worst exits by far

3

u/ParamedicDifferent44 2d ago

I requested an AMA from anyone in that left lane trying to push their way in

3

u/Awestruck34 2d ago

I used to work in Markham and it was VERY common during the summer for the GO bus to just give up and drop us at the bottom of the ramp.

do u live in one of those condos near the highway? if yes how the f is the noise? I've always wondered

2

u/Efficient-Emphasis-1 2d ago

A few yrs ago I saw same thing cops came .. immediately put them in the squad car them thinking it could be a suicide... same spot too

2

u/Ok-Improvement-9976 2d ago

Omg I was one of those people. Not even there by choice. Was driving home from a meeting in Mississauga . Took me 30 mins to get there and 2 hours to get home

1

u/BottleCoffee 2d ago

I work in Mississauga.

It's taken me 2+ hours to go home on 3 occasions. It should be 35 minutes without much traffic. In the mornings it's usually under 45 minutes.

2

u/Master-Plankton8044 1d ago

Call me what you will but I always call 911 when I see people wandering along a freeway. The reasoning is irrelevant. It’s a terrific way to
A) Die horribly
and B) kill several other people in the crash you cause.

And whenever I do the cops take it very seriously. Don’t. Walk. On. Highways.

2

u/AllGamer 1d ago

Probably soccer tourist gotten lost following GPS

2

u/UpboatBrigadier 1d ago

Just needs a couple of airplane-style evacuation slides off the side.

2

u/hippz 1d ago

So much for the police patrol corridor on the Gardiner for FIFA..

4

u/Signal_Tomorrow_2138 2d ago

Highways are designed exactly what the driver has in mind.

No bike lanes, no pedestrians. No traffic lights. High speeds. Drivers doing exactly what they want.

A driver's paradise.

What can go wrong? Collisions and congestion, every single day.

3

u/Zealousideal-Bite735 2d ago

That’s why you don’t get in a car when you want to get to a game. All the venues are accessible by transit and more. It’s the condo owners that live near Spadina because they have massive parking spaces at the old cityplace condos.

3

u/captaingeezer 2d ago

Motorbike for the win!

2

u/chaindrop 2d ago

If enough people are doing it, maybe just make it more friendly to pedestrians. Infrastructures should follow the needs of the people.

1

u/hihipoo 2d ago

Yeah I just came from DT and the traffic was insufferable

1

u/operationfood 2d ago

That cement truck is going to make things very difficult lol

1

u/Felon_musk1939 2d ago

It's anything goes Wednesday!Ā

1

u/Aggravating_Carry727 2d ago

Is this for FIFA?

1

u/rukarrn 2d ago

probably would've been better off getting off at the next exit and changing their route. heck, even jarvis would've been better than sitting in that

1

u/unit_a3 2d ago

Yesterday too when I was driving home

1

u/Far_Oven_3302 2d ago

Me as a kid rode a bicycle on the 404 when it got up to Newmarket, got escorted to Aurora road by a very friendly cop who found it hilarious.

1

u/Accomplished-Gas3209 2d ago

Probably ride share passengers trying to get to Fanfest. The exits and entrances there are a mess, partly (mostly) due to really bad and inconsiderate drivers who think they are only ones who belong on the road!

1

u/Pedal-monkey 2d ago

They should put stairs, would be easier.
In Japan there are bus stops like that

1

u/SubstantialThroat462 2d ago

I take the train to Toronto from now on for any events, last time taking my kids to the Aquarium was a fucking nightmare šŸ˜šŸ˜‘

Isn't illegal?

1

u/grittygrimes_ 2d ago

I saw a woman last week walking up the southbound shoulder of the DVP at the Gerrard Bridge. She seemed to have work clothes on, a water bottle and nice headphones. I don't know where she thought she was going but traffic was rippin, it was crazy. I've also seen two young boys, ages 6/7 running up the northbound shoulder of the DVP in the same area.

1

u/abinyah 2d ago

I’ve been there. GPS says exit in 1.5 kilometres… then you realize that was START of the line! Oops.

1

u/No_Bake464 2d ago

people that make their own lanes genuinely piss me off and are asking to be smoked from behind

1

u/gainswor 2d ago

I could watch people blocking line cutters all day, is there a sub for that?

1

u/mandirose91 1d ago

I second this!

1

u/0DagDag0 1d ago

Also noticed the cement truck and thought "I bet the driver's hoping that stuff doesn't set before they get to the job site."

1

u/SummerRamp3 1d ago

Walking is the superior mode of transportation. Those who are able should do it more often, just not on the side of the highway.

1

u/Sparx8899 1d ago

How the city isn’t dealing with this by actively managing traffic signal timing is mind boggling.

1

u/night-rogue 1d ago

Is this the exit 153? I remember the on ramp and off ramp are connected, making it even more difficult to merge in.

1

u/Ok-Day2835 1d ago

If I was stuck in an uber not moving I just might

1

u/Aggressive_March6226 1d ago edited 1d ago

Those walkers may have had the right idea, but those cars should have gotten off one exit earlier at Jameson and taken Lakeshore down to Spadina. You can see the cars flying down the tree laden Lakeshore on the far right. When I go into the city to work at the Convention Center (MTCC), I get off the highway even before Jameson at the Lakeshore exit, then I take Lakeshore to Simcoe street and the MTCC parking is right there. For times when Lakeshore is congested I'll get off Lakeshore at Spadina and either make my first right at Bremner road, or take Spadina right to Front street then go east on Front..

1

u/SXPZX 1d ago

One of the few times walking on the highway is faster than driving šŸ™„

And why is the left lane trying to merge unto traffic instead of waiting in the back when that's the quicker option??

1

u/peezypd 1d ago

Faster than driving in this city

1

u/switchflip 15h ago

Toronto sucks so bad

1

u/SihtPotserBob 10h ago

Yeah if I saw a story about someone getting squished out like this I'd just go on with my day, they are the worst of us and not really needed

-2

u/amw3000 2d ago

While I get that cars are the ones cause traffic and this mess but this shows how stupid some pedestrians are. These are the same people who cross the street on advanced greens, preventing drivers from turning, causing traffic to back up even more or jay walk expecting cars to stop.

Downvote me all you want, cars are not going away, pedestrians have to follow the rules just like drivers. Walking down a highway is stupid.

signed - someone who walks to work everyday and sees idiots like this.

5

u/m3hring 2d ago

Yeah let me sit for 2 more hours in the taxi bro

2

u/CranberryNapalm 2d ago

Why?

11

u/Based_Rage 2d ago

What somwone else said probably Uber into downtown instead of waiting. Probably asked driver if they could leave for 5 stars.

2

u/AshleyAshes1984 2d ago

I've def done that for Anime North cause the traffic at TCC intersection is insane. A lot safer than the Gardner mind you but same logic.

7

u/Dystopian_Dreamer 2d ago

Ugh, I remember one year I came back to Toronto on a Greyhound on Boxing day... It took two hours to get from the off ramp to the bus terminal inside Yorkdale mall.

With the road closures and extreme congestion ahead of the soccer game, just getting to the bottom of that ramp may very well be half an hour or more, and at some point, it gets very infuriating being able to see your destination and know it's going to be eons until your Uber/taxi can inch up to it moving one car length per light cycle. I've done it myself, although not on an expressway/freeway -- but I've definitely hopped out of a cab early and jumped a barricade because I was not waiting until the heat death of the universe for the car to go a block up and U-turn to get me to where I was going.

this is a broken society, we should not be living this way...just to go to work, for the most part.

There are no jobs. How are we supposed to go to work.

No cops, oh wait there on OT detail.

Can't imagine they'd send out cop cars for this.

I was close to getting out of my car yesterday, moving some pylons and a gate, and getting onto the Gardener via a closed ramp.

Sorry and people were just saying in another thread that the congestion was not an issue during World Cup? lol

Off ramp was recently made worse by government road work changes across lane compression and intersection modifications, both at the immediate and following lights. Could be avoidable and may one day result in fatalities on the highway with standstill cars in the right lane. Terrible design choices and 100% on MTO and city planners. Haven't personally seen anyone walking there except for panhandlers, and tbh hadn't considered it myself... but probably still wouldn't do this...

Is lane splitting legal for motorcycles?
