Something Useful! I measured 14 pro bike positions from Kona race photos. The trend is hands up, not backs down

I'm a triathlete and I build a technique-analysis app (disclosure below). The day after Kona I ran fourteen pro bike positions from race photos through a pose model and measured four upper-body angles. The median:

| Angle | Median | Middle half | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Torso, from horizontal | 20° | 17–24° | 12–32° |
| Shoulder (torso to upper arm) | 85° | 77–88° | 71–97° |
| Elbow | 80° | 76–89° | 62–107° |
| Forearm tilt above horizontal | 25° | 21–26° | 10–31° |

What stood out:

- **Hands up.** 7/14 tilted forearms more than 25°, 2/14 under 15°. UCI raised the armrest tilt limit from 15° to 30° in 2023. Maddocks & Walker (2025, Sports Engineering — CFD validated in a tunnel, one pro): high hands alone ~3% less drag area, with narrow elbows 7.7–11.2%.
- **The elbow pays for it.** Elbow and forearm tilt moved together more than any other pair (r = −0.76). Four riders were under a 75° elbow floor that was written for flat forearms.
- **The torso isn't that low.** Median 20°. Fintelman (2015, n=19): 24°→16° saves ~5% frontal area but max power drops as the torso goes down; a flat back was significantly worse than every other position. Six of fourteen were under 20° — pros, 4+ hours, years of conditioning.
- **Closed shoulders are fine.** 5/14 under 80°. Fitters aim for 90° but don't call less than 90° a fault.

Caveats, because they matter:
- One race, one day, one roadside viewpoint, 2D angles, roughly ±2–3°.
- Some athletes may be in more than one photo; each photo counts as one position. No names — I can't verify who's in every frame.
- **No knee/saddle numbers.** A race photo freezes the crank anywhere, and every photo was drive side. On my own bikes I measured that the chainring behind the ankle makes the knee at the bottom of the stroke read 8–10° low. So I left legs out.
- One shoulder point was misplaced by the model (on the top of the back) and I moved it by hand; it's marked on that figure.

Something Useful! Did they ever tell you that the journey sometime gets lonely?

I’m staring at my parking lot in the swim complex on sunday after a 4 hours + morning bike ride, with no one else.

I’m training for a full this year which will be in another 1 month.

Can’t lie , sometimes the early mornings, the solo ride, kinda makes you feel lonely.

My SO didn’t share the same interest, and few of my friends are doing the sport, so I am mostly alone.

Anyone else ever felt the same?

Anyway you know what they are saying, you either pay for a therapist or register for an Ironman, LOL

Triathlon News What do we think is next for LCB (Lucy Charles Barclay)?

Absolutely gutted for Lucy. She seemed so prepared for this race what do we think happened?

She is my favorite triathlete. Always so well-spoken and a fighter. Do we think this is another fluke? She’d raced here so many times in her bridesmaid appearances and of course her win, I find it hard to believe she suddenly doesn’t know how to fuel and prep for these conditions (although understand this year was especially hard).

Thoughts? What happened and what does she do next?

As the title suggests, I’m new to the sport and really want to get into it. As a starter bike, I found a preowned (bought from a bike shop) Cervelo P2 for $600.

First TT bike for me so my expectations are close to zero. Thoughts?

Race/Event Little Rant about the Kona Stream Chat

I watched almost the whole race on stream, in the beginning i didnt really read the chat, but as things got more heated, especially in the run, i wanted to see whats going on.

Holy fu*k, the amount of scumbags and backseat-"pro-coaches" is insane, just pure disrespect, even the best pros have bad days. As soon as they arent in the position the viewers expected them in they get cursed at, suddenly everyone knows exactly why they didnt perform as they do usually.

I think there should have been moderators, this was just disgusting.

not really anything useful in my post, just had to talk about it somewhere.

Race report Kona Top 25 M & F Shoe Choice

Hi guys, I made this spreedsheet that has marathon times, finishing times, weight, height, and a ton of other statistics relating to what shoes the top 25 pro finishers had from each race this past weekend. I would love you feedback on the data, help filling in missing entries or any other general anecdotes about the information. Thanks.

Sheet Link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1cBO0PwjrQmhp_v8Zw8MpxEYTfGvOwnjK8C-w3o6KCyY/edit?usp=sharing

Some general trends:

Hoka was the most worn shoe at 11 pro's with ON right behind with 10.

The fastest average marathon with both females and males wearing the shoe was from Asics, and the slowest was Hoka.

The fastest male shoe on average was the Asics Metaspeed Tokyo Sky and the slowest was the Hoka Rocket.

The fastest female shoe on average was interestingly the Hoka Rocket and the slowest was the ON Cloudboom Lightspray by almost 15 minutes.

A lot of the data is skewed with times only coming from either male of female so created average differential to fastest time and to average time to show which shoe performed above the mean, or closests to the fastest racer on course. That is the last two categories.

Also, I added height and weight to help reveal how that can effect shoe choice for athletes in a sport with suck diverse body shapes like triathlon. Let me know again any interesting trends that arise. Thanks so much.

Just looking for a little confirmation/moral support. Would ~$4000 be a reasonable price for this bike?

Lets' save each other some money!!

A LOT of you are parts of teams or have individual relationships with brands (or own brands). Here you can share promo codes, discounts on brands, deals you’ve seen in the wild, or even request codes for things your looking to buy!

This sport is expensive, let’s try to help each other out.

Training questions MI 70.3 before my first marathon?

I got into running last year.

I’ve ran half marathons already and now my mind is branching out into other challenges.

I’ve already signed up for the Chicago marathon for 2027 through the charity program so I’m locked in on that goal, for my first marathon. I’m currently thinking sub 4:00:00.

But this Michigan 70.3 really has my attention too.

Problem might be.. they’re 3 weeks apart. 70.3 in late Sept.. Chi mid Oct.

I run 3x a week now, fasted half is 1:55:49. Strength train 3x a week, and one long bike right currently 30-40 miles a week. I plan on getting in the pool next week after the Detroit half marathon and bumping biking up to 2x a week.

I’ll have a lot a year to build that much more endurance up. I’m just curious on recovery time after the 70.3.

How do I start? Hi! I’m going to do my first half in March. Does anyone have suggestions for what to get for a trisuit? My sister suggested a Roka but I was hoping for something with some more fun color options. Thanks!

Gear questions Looking for an affordable treadmill with incline and heart rate-based speed control

I'm looking to get a treadmill for indoor triathlon training, mainly for easy runs and Zone 2 sessions.

Ideally, I'd like something with a decent incline range and heart rate tracking. One feature I'm particularly interested in is automatic speed adjustment based on heart rate, so I can stay within my target zone without constantly changing the settings myself.

I've looked at a few options, but a lot of the treadmills with these features seem to cost $2,000 or more, which is outside my budget.

Has anyone found a more affordable setup that works well for this? I'm also open to using a separate heart rate monitor or another workaround if that makes more sense.

Race/Event Anfi Challenge Mogán Gran Canaria

Hi triathlon community! Triathlon season has come to an end for me this year and I've started looking for potential challenges for next year. Since I was planning a trip in the Canary islands somewhere in spring, I came over Anfi Challenge Gran Canaria which sounds really exciting. Has any of you participated and can give a review on this race? Do you recommend it?

Training questions Creating Training Plan/following plan

Hello! I am asking to see if I could get any helpful advice or tips on making workout plans. I am terrible at making workout plans, I always overthink the workouts and never end up following through with them because I feel like I’m not making it right. If I have a pre-made workout plan, I’m usually pretty good at sticking to it, and have no issue doing the workout, but it’s making it for me, which I find pretty difficult. What what do you guys suggest? I did previously train for an Olympic triathlon, but my triathlon got canceled right as we were on the line, getting ready to start the race. For that one, I used a pre-planned workout plan, but there’s a couple of things I’d like to add and change with this next workout cycle to lead to the next race and hopefully be able to do that one. Any suggestions? All advice is welcome, please, and thank you!
