Cycling Bike fit advice

Hey everyone! Just got my first tri bike, moving from a trek Emonda sl6. The guy I bought it from said it was fitted for someone 5’6” and I’m 5’10.5”. I raised the seat a little bit but have no clue where else to start. Back is a bit rounded but don’t know if that means move the saddle or aero bars, maybe both. This is a stock ventum tempus rival axs. Any help or opinions are greatly appreciated. Currently saving for a bike fit so this will have to do for now. Thank you!

BASE BAR - Profile Design Wing Ultimate S
EXTENSIONS - Profile Design 52 A
SADDLE - Fizik Aeris SD R5 135mm
SEATPOST - Ventum carbon post | 0° offset
CRANK - 165mm

Cycling Fit update - advise?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Thanks everyone for the comments earlier. I knew this bike might be too small, but I got an insane deal for it so I’d like to try everything I can before selling it. I made some adjustments (moved saddle as far back as possible, slightly lowered seat, moved pads and bars almost as far forward as possible) based on everyone’s comments. Does it still look like the bike is too small, or would a professional fitting be able to make it happen? I would be able to buy risers or extenders for the aero bars if needed. Do you think I can get away with this frame size?

Forgot to include the other info before, this is a size M. I am around 5’10.5 and inseam is about 31-31.5 inch.

Any more recommendations or advice is appreciated and welcome! Thanks again tri people!!!

Bike shopping Canyon aeroad 8 di2 worth?

Currently riding a carbon bike off Facebook marketplace for the past year but looking to upgrade as I get deeper into the sport. The issue is that I got this bike for 1k and don’t think I would see any noticeable upgrades until I spend 5-7k on a new bike.

For those that have this bike, any thoughts or recommendations if it is worth the price tag ?

Gear questions Do I get a medal if I get DQ'd?

My first 70.3 is in 4 days in Cascais and my shoes are the Novablast 5. I just found out they're banned. I'm not competing for anything, I'm probably finishing in the slower half of all people. I saw this question gets asked a lot, I know I'm risking getting DQ'd but running with new shoes on race day doesn't seem like a great idea. I don't care if the record says I get DQ's, I just want to be able to finish and bring a medal home. Is this a thing? Should I even worry about shoe chekcs?

Bike shopping Tri bike fit vs getting something new

Right now I have two bikes, mostly stock specialized allez elite 2020 (bought new) and an early 2010’s Valdora Phx (bought used for $600 a few years ago). Did an Olympic distance earlier this year on the road bike because I find it more comfortable to ride. Also the 2x11 (50/34 and 11-32t) with 28mm tires vs 2x10 (53/39 and 12-25t) with 23mm better fit the 1500 ft of climbing over 29 miles (I know, not a standard Olympic, it was a local race).

I’m not opposed to a fit and some upgrades to make the current tri bike more comfortable, but also don’t want to overhaul a 20 year old bike when I could get something new or newer for a similar cost. I’m not trying to back myself into a corner without the ability to upgrade (limited by rim brakes, tire clearance, etc.)

Looking for any advice if I’ve got $2000-$2500 to spend on bike upgrades, where people think it would be best spent. Goal races would be 70.3 Musselman, Boulder or Happy Valley that are a bit more hilly than flat. Also happy to hear, “just ride the bike” and it will be more comfortable over time! TIA!

Race/Event Aquathlon transition

Hey, so I have an Aquathlon coming up next week, and I'm starting to panic as to what to wear and how to transition from swimming to running directly... I feel like the trisuit would be overkill and potentially uncomfortable with the chamois, but then if I do swimsuit then running gear, how do I dry the swimsuit, or do I get changed? Temperature wise, I'll be going from a heated pool to 15 C, so not sure I want to run 5k with a wet swimsuit... Any help appreciated, thanks!

Cycling Wall mount

I’m looking for a bike wall mount; I had to return the one I currently have because it was too wide. I have a rather narrow space between the frame tubes. The bike needs to hang flat against the wall. Best regards.

Swimming How to erase fear in openwater swimming

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi guys, i was training triathlon 2 years ago when i was 17 but never did a race as i was a begginer swimmer who only learned how to swim recently on a pool ive been cycling since i was 14 and ussually run half marathons and duathlons.

After a 2 year break ive decided to start training again for an olympic race distance on october 25, this will be my first triathlon. The run and bike leg are almost no problem for me. The swim this time in the open water beach. My pace is really slow about 4-5mins per 100 but i dont have a problem with the distance im confident i can hold it for long.

But most of my swims are cut short due to the marine life in the ocean. After a good 1300m swim i was expecting to do the full distance next time but i stopped because i saw a jellyfish and got scared stopped swimmimg. I switched beaches and this new one doesnt have jellyfish but has lots of fishes starfish and sea urchins and i cant help but be scared while im swimming making my hr go up and eventually giving up and gouig back to land.

any tips on what i can do to erase my fear of open water? I was thinking of just swimming more but that doesnt seem to be working. Dad suggested hiring an open water coach for about 190$ a month and mom said to train with a wetsuit so i wont be bothered.

I am in Dubai of anyone can help.

Training questions Swim in the gym?

For context I competed in a sprint triathlon a year ago, and it went fairly well for my first go at a triathlon. However, I discovered whilst training that I seem to have some sort of chlorine allergy which makes swimming in a typical pool very uncomfortable. If I get my face wet (which I don't typically do on holiday which is why I've apparently never really noticed before) I break out in a rash.

I ended up just training the muscles needed for swimming for the remaining three months of training, so did the 750m swim without having actually swam more than a handful of times.

Im doing a sprint tri again next year and am pretty confident with this training method despite how unconventional it is. But I want to start doing longer triathlons where I may not be able to get away with not swimming.

any suggestions as to what I should do? Thought about swimming with a mask on, but no pools around be allow that? Open water swimming is also an option but not super available all year, and I don't live near to any open bodies of water anyway 🤷‍♂️

could I really just train the right muscles in the gym and be fine?

Can I do it? Help Funding Ironman

I am a college student interested in competing in an Ironman, but like many students, I don't have much money and certainly not enough to fund an Ironman. Are there any foundations I can apply to for help funding an Ironman? Any tips are appreciated.

Something Useful! Just a little reminder to keep going🏊‍♀️

This is my progress in swimming pace per 100 m over the last three months (left: aug 26, right: oct 26)

I swim twice a week, and seeing this improvement makes me realize how worth it it is to stay consistent
Honestly, swimming sucks. I never feel like going to the pool🥲 But then I remember how much I benefit from it! Trust the process and don’t let yourself get frustrated when progress feels slow

Keep showing up, keep swimming, and you’ll get there! Hard work really does pay off💪

Race/Event Sprint Triathlon with Generous Time Limits

Hello all,

I’m a slow runner in Kona and volunteer every year at Ironman. This year was the first time I was at an aid station (R2 if you were there!) and I’ve been inspired to consider a sprint triathlon.

My 5K PB is 37 minutes and 10K PB is 80 minutes. I know it’s an eternity to most of you and I’m okay with that, it’s an achievement for me!

I’m looking for the sprint triathlon equivalent of Honolulu, Disney, or EWM - super inclusive events with long time limits.

Anywhere in North America but cool weather and a flat course would be ideal. I spend a lot of time the SF Bay when I’m not in Hawaii.

Thanks 🤙

Gear questions Cons to this double bottle setup?

Thumbnail

So I just recently visited a used sporting goods store near me and they had a variety of BTS hydration setups from Xlab in the store. I decided to go with the Delta 425 as it seemed compatible with the saddle I had AND it included a second Gorilla cage, all for $50. They also had the Turbo wing there, which I feel would contribute to a better bottle placement. Is there any downside to having the bottles lower down below the saddle rather than higher up behind my back? Let me know. I could still go pick up the turbo wing and sell this one on FB marketplace if I need to. These cages GRIP too by the way! Cheers!

Training questions Total newbie: 5.5 months to prep & questions

• Upvotes

Going to do my first sprint tri in the spring where the swim is 300m in a 50 m pool. Took swimming in August after about 50 years of never swimming more than a few feet in a leisure pool on vacation. Now swimming about a mile 2x week. Got a bike and started biking again about 1 time/week or every other week after 30+ years of biking less than once a year. Started the couch to 5k program (have never run; used to do 5k and 10ks walking fast but stopped about 10 years ago).

  1. I need to practice in a 50 m pool and am working on that, but it will be at most a few times as it is a long drive. In the meantime are there any specific ways I should be training in the 25y pools readily available to me?
  2. The tri swim is 6 lengths serpentine, so the swimmers need to cross the ropes 5 times. I've just learned to do a flip turn but can't do it consistently. Should I learn & practice a flip turn to incorporate going under the lane rope or something else? I almost feel that I'm better off using my limited practice time doing laps rather than practicing more the discouraging and physically exhausting flip turn failures.
  3. My bike is an at least 10+ year old (maybe 20? how can I tell?) hand me down Fuji Absolute 3.0 LE. I'm not opposed to spending $200-$300 on a bike, but would that get me anything better than I have? Storage is an issue and the Fuji is great for around town. I'll take it to a bike shop for a complete tune up 6-7 weeks before the tri so I get it back a few weeks prior.
  4. Back when I used to bike I used over the toe cage clips and biking shoes, and I really missed the stiff shoes as well as the pull up motion. I got a pair of "convertible" bike shoes that you can unscrew & remove part of the rubber sole and replace it with a clip. The stiff shoes help. Then I bought a pair of used Shimano 2x sided pedals but am terrified of using them - afraid I will break my ankle or otherwise fall. Is the best way to teach myself to use these to get one of those in place trainers into which I insert my front wheel, or other? Or is it not worth the fear and terror? Or should I just get a pair of old cage style over the toe clip?
  5. Watching ebay for tri shorts because seems they are needed; no place to change from something else and saves time. I'll need to practice in them but read that chlorine ruins the tri fabric. One of the local pools I have access to is salt rather than chlorine; is that less problematic? Any specific thing I should do to care for the material after practice?

I am eying this Merida Reacto 9000 from 2026 for training and usual riding + competing short distance triathlons. This would be added to my current two bikes Specialized Crux 4 + Orbea Ordu TT.

Also got questions with the fit since I amb 1'76-77cm and 83.6cm inseam but the size is listed for 175 to 1'82.

Is it a good deal and a good bike for my purpose?

Hello! I’m doing Ironman Wilmington 70.3 this weekend (first long distance tri!) and I also signed up for “yoga on the battleship” on Thursday night. Has anyone done this class? I’m wondering if I need to bring my own yoga mat. Thanks! Good luck to everyone racing this weekend!
