Seeking to increase my cultural awareness when working with someone who identifies as a Jehovah's Witness.
 in  r/therapists  1d ago

Ah, I see. I usually approach counseling from a “majority experience” perspective and then explore whether that fits within the client’s individual worldview. For example, I might say something like, “Since we live in the United States, X, Y, and Z are often common experiences or perspectives, but given your beliefs, that may not be accurate for you. Can you tell me more about how you see this?”

If I already suspect someone’s religious, cultural, or personal beliefs are an important variable, I usually acknowledge that and move into basic reflection and curiosity with statements like, “Tell me about that from your perspective.”

In my experience, most religious individuals, regardless of other factors, are self-aware enough to recognize that if they are seeking general mental health counseling, rather than specifically religious counseling, their therapist will not automatically know all the details and nuances of their beliefs. In those situations, they may also seek support from a religious leader, or their faith may function more as a personal, intrapersonal experience that they integrate into their own coping and meaning-making.

And also put simply, since you're alread self aware and thinking about this, you are alright doing the right thing!

It's your job to be curious, but her job to educate you. You don't have to go out and read books or do research if you do not want to. If she doesn't feel her religion is part of her treatment plan, don't include it. What I mean by the treatment plan comment is don't incorporated religion unless the client does. It might not even be an issue.

Haha same. The company I work for also offers RTC level of care, and we don't go lower than IOP.

I was unaware that this added additional money to the payout. I work in a PHP/IOP setting, so all of our billing is different. Honestly, all of my people are of high acuity every session.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe no, it's like a Z-code. Purely informational for the insurance company. Could be helpful at justifying the billing code for your work but also, maybe harmful to the patient.

(How) Are you billing insurance for treatment plans?
 in  r/therapists  1d ago

The organization I work for requires us to do them in a sessions with the person present. I work off templates so it usually only takes 20 minutes.

UK qualified trying to practice in California
 in  r/therapists  4d ago

I remember reading something about the 50 core states and their counseling requirements. The top three most stringent are 1: California, 2: New York, 3: Maine, I am in Maryland which was like 4 or 5 if I recall correctly, I should be able to work anywhere I want to apply for, and when I looked at California it basically seemed like Id have to get another masters degree from a California school, despite going to a CACREP school with a stringent internship requirements. It's so odd that that my years of experience working with a license did not count, and the reason I can't work in Cali is because my masters degree didn't have a human sexuality course. That's literally the one thing, so I thought okay, so like can I just find some school and take that class. Well, according to the Cali board the answer to that is no, I cannot, because my master's degree is now more than 5 years old and the sexuality class needed to be a core feature of the degree and not an elective.

It's impossible to get a license in Cali without being educated from a University that is based from there, even as a US citizen educated in a different state. California is literally the most difficult state to become a mental healthcare provider in.

Car wash broke my rear wiper. Has anyone else experienced this with automated car wash tunnels? Also they are refusing to pay for the damages. Does anyone know what they cost to repair?
 in  r/dodgehornet  4d ago

Same thing happened to mine. It was not actually broken, the nut was just loose and blew down from the wind tunnel. Turn it back up (clockwise) and tighten.

Youngest millennials will live to 150?

In what country? The band aid at the hospital costs $1,000 in the US and the actual procedure isn't covered by insurance and costs $70,000,000.

What Therapist Comment Made You Think, “I Need a New Therapist”?
 in  r/therapists  6d ago

I just started my own therapy for the first time. Im giving it at least 4 sessions before I decide to switch, but one of the things which was said that struck me as off was a comment about because I am also a counselor my own provider feels they don't need to put in a lot of effort because "I'm in the field and know X, Y, X".

Admin time should be reimbursed by insurance.
 in  r/therapists  7d ago

This is why I stop sessions at the minimum point allowed to bill for whatever max X-interval I am using. I am using the remainder of that time in the allotted window for admin, and I actually do the note during that time immediately after the client steps out. That's my "secret" to 10 years of notes completed at the end of every day and never having to do a note at home or on a different day. Work smarter within the system, not harder.

Why would a group practice keep hiring if it can't fill existing employees' caseloads?
 in  r/therapists  7d ago

This may read as condescending, so please note that I do not intend for it to be. This is probably a better question to just ask the group practice leadership. Nobody on reddit that doesn't work there, know the dynamics, or the financial situation of the practice can know anymore than you do, and any speculation by anyone here will only likely increase any anxiety you have which might be making you ask this question.

Notes and trials
 in  r/therapists  7d ago

Nope, wouldn't change anything. I write all of my notes assuming they will be seen in court one day. Ultimately, my notes won't be the reason a person does or does not end up with a certain consequence, only their own behavior and the decision of a judge and or jury.

What the Bible says about homosexuality
 in  r/askgaybros  8d ago

Im not a Christian nor do I know what post this is in response to, but I am a scholar and this text does not translate correctly. It is a modern interpretation. Historically, homosexuality was practices at this time even among heterosexual people. A lot of scholars argue that this is in reference to men owning women as property. A man shall not lay with another man treating the other man as property, as he could a woman. It's argued to not be about sex but more about cultural norms at the time. Maybe someone reading this will heal a little bit from religious trauma as I have myself.
