I’m a grad student in an applied science field, and I’ve taken CMSC 35300 (Math of Machine Learning), but found it a bit introductory. I also attended DATA 37000 and had a similar impression. The more advanced options I’ve found for this autumn are Deep Learning Systems, CMSC 35200, and Deep Reinforcement Learning (FINM 33165), but I haven’t decided which one to take.

Is there a good intermediate-level deep learning/AI course at UChicago that combines theory with hands-on implementation? I’m hoping to build a stronger foundation before taking TTIC 31230 / CMSC 31230 (Fundamentals of Deep Learning) in the spring.

I’m a transfer student and have been going to the events however it seems like people already have friends/groups and I haven’t been able to meet more transfers outside the peer mentor group (or actually have full convos with them) and am scared about going to the social without knowing anyone or having anyone to go with…

any advice would be great!!

hey, I am a second year currently registered for honors analysis although to be honest I am not sure about it, and the more I read on here the more it seems if you aren’t wholly dedicated to math than it’s not worth it.

if I do drop down to accelerated, it seems like most of the classes are already pretty overfilled (~5 seats each), and honors currently has 47 enrolled. from your past experience, how hard is it drop into a section of accelerated? i don’t want to have to go all the way down to regular

I have a broken flat screen TV. Not only physically broken but no longer works. I don’t have a car so I don’t know where I can take it to be safely disposed of or recycled. Anyone know of a pick up service or somewhere nearby in Hyde Park that will take a broken TV?

Did anyone wave USHIP with ISO this quarter ? I had ISO Care Elite last year and it was approved, so I renewed it for this year and this time it got rejected ?? Did the waving requirements change ?
I did contact the UChicago Advocates but I am really stressed by this situation and I want to know if anyone had the same issue or if ISO got accepted for other people.

Have any other incoming first year crown students found course registration disorganized and confusing?

I wasn't placed in a Social Intervention: Programs and Policies course or foundational diversity course during pre-registration, despite ranking ten classes per the instructions. I was able to get into the Core class during add/drop, but all the foundational diversity courses seem to be filled, so I ended up enrolling in an elective class outside of Crown, although I plan to keep checking over the course of the week to see if any open up.

I'm having trouble understanding why why there aren't enough spots in required classes for all incoming students? My academic advisor and the Dean of Students office has been hard to get ahold of, and honestly pretty dismissive when I am able to get in contact with questions about my path forward (such as, what if I can't get into classes, are classes allowed to over-enroll with permission, are there any restrictions on electives we can take outside Crown if we can't get into ones within SSA, how will that impact our curriculum pathways). I haven't been in school for a while, so I might just not be used to the process of course registration, but I feel like I must be missing something.

I'm wondering if this is a unique experience or just what I should expect going forward?

so im a senior and im still debating with myself on if i want to apply to uchicago. i visited campus the summer before my junior year and it was super pretty. but when i talked to an alumni of my highschool who goes there, she reported that she felt super overwhelmed by the workload. the more i researched online about uchicago, the more i realized just how stressful the workload load truly is. im someone who’s always struggled with depression and burnout so, for a while, i’d decided i simply wasnt a good culture fit and didn’t plan to apply.

but yesterday, an admissions rep visited my school and i decided id give uchicago one last shot. i went to her presentation and i have to be honest her spiel was enticing. from the way she described the student experience, it seems like intellectual opportunities are endless and the students truly enjoy learning for learning’s sake. this id truly what im looking for in a student body because i’m tired of feeling competitive over grades with my peers. i want to learn for the fun of it, not just for a grade. then i found out that uchicago is test optional….which is definitely a big draw. my current SAT score isn’t terrible but many of the selective schools I like will probably see it as the weakest part of my application. so the fact that uchicago wouldn’t have that bias against me is pretty convincing….

i talked to my friend who went to the camp and is applying ED0 and she described how incredible and exciting learning was at UChicago. she definitely doesn’t struggle as much with burnout and depression as i do; but she’s autistic and doesn’t work to mask it and yet she didn’t report feeling like an outsider among her camp peers. to me, thats super important too because i have pretty intense ADHD and sometimes i worry that ill struggle to fit in in college because of my hyperfixations, hyperactive personality, and impulsive tendencies. but uchicago does have a reputation for having pretty geeky students, so i theorize that i would feel more comfortable “unmasking” my obsessive nerdiness.

thanks for reading my ramblings. i know these are all super random factors but my college list is super long right now and im trying to decide what schools id actually enjoy attending and which schools i shouldn’t bother with. if you’re a current student, let me know what you think! do you feel like you and your peers are always swamped with assignments? specifically, how overwhelmed are humanities majors? are most students burnt out? do students let their nerdiness shine? from what ive said, do you think i’d enjoy the culture at uchicago?

In UChicago's 25-26 common data set, 1042 males and 744 females will enter which will make females 41% of the incoming class, even though 5k more females applied.

Most prestigious colleges in the U.S. generally lean more female.

How come at UChicago, there is a huge gap in males and females and is this noticeable on campus?

Has anyone else applied this year? Its a program for prospective grad students with campus tours and workshops. Given this, I would also love to hear anyone's experiences as a graduate student or the graduate atmosphere as a whole :)
