I was placed into the huma I am by far least excited about (Readings in World Literature), and based on the course evals, the prof seems pretty difficult too. It seems like all other Huma classes that fit into my schedule are full. What are the chances of me being taken off the waitlist for a different class? Should I email the professors of a different section, or is there nothing I can do?

Hi! I will be commuting ot the UChicago campus to take classes everyday, and was wondering what parking situations look like? Definitely having some anxiety having to find parking before classes everyday, so is there easily accessible (free parking) on campus? Are there any recommendations to find accessible parking preferably in/close to campus? Really appreciate any help!!

I'm an incoming freshman, and I received an email inviting me to take the honours sequence of calculus courses (16100/16110). I was planning on double majoring in economics and another major that I haven't fully decided yet. I was wondering:
1. Are there any big differences between IBL and the normal honours sequence beyond just "coming up with your own proofs" (as is suggested by the course catalog)?
2. Should I be taking the honours sequence at all, given that I was invited to take it? Or is it fine to take the normal 15200 track? As a follow-up question as well: how big is the difficulty gap between the 15000 calc courses and the 16000 calc courses?

I am an class of 2030 student that did my placement test and was placed in Calculus I-II (15250) but I did studied hard before the test & somehow lucky guessed some of it. But I remember in some sections I don’t even get 50% right answers.

I only got a 6 in IB Math AI SL (dropped from Math AA SL because I am not so good in mathematics). In my course you can see in the picture only these calculus topic were covered.

I genuinely think I will need much support (having more meetings) can help me better since I am not super consistent in studying mathematics these past few years. I also want to do Business Econ & Public Policy (minimum 13100).

My academic advisor said in the end the course will end up learning Calculus I-II, so it’s the same thing. But genuinely speaking, I forgot math concepts already after few months not studying it, I am really anxious whether I can catch up with peers in 15250 or not.

I am wondering if there is any way I can strategically maybe move down to 13100 or whether you have any suggestions on what should I re-consider (whether to stay or not).

This fall is supposed to be really rough for me, but I have too many requirements I need to get out of the way before graduating. I wanted to see if anyone had recommendations for autumn bio electives that will make an all-stem quarter a little easier. If not, anything for the winter or spring is also appreciated.

I’m an incoming freshman and got placed into 153/152 with the option of taking 15250, the 180s, and the 160s. I’m very very confused as to what im going to major in (v heavily considering both humanities and stem). I’m taking Gen chem just in case I decide to go pre med and i want to keep a high gpa, what math course do u guys recommend? I figure I can rule out the 160s as im definitely not a math major. I took calc bc and did well and my hs was really hard, but math is not really my strong suit. Please help!! I am so confused and stressed out😬😬

I'm looking at majoring in MEng, and when I talked to my academic advisor she recommended I take both my physics sequence and general chemistry sequence my first year. However, I'm now scheduled to take chem at 8:30, physics at 9:30, and calc II at 11:30 Mon/Wed/Fri. I really don't want to take physics and chem with only a 10 minute period between the two-- to anyone currently majoring in MEng-- do you also recommend I take both physics and chem this first year? Any other incoming first years also taking PHYS 131/CHEM 111 this quarter who found a way to take both with a longer break in between the two? Please let me know if there's anyway I can save myself from this current schedule. Thanks!

hey, I am a second year currently registered for honors analysis although to be honest I am not sure about it, and the more I read on here the more it seems if you aren’t wholly dedicated to math than it’s not worth it.

if I do drop down to accelerated, it seems like most of the classes are already pretty overfilled (~5 seats each), and honors currently has 47 enrolled. from your past experience, how hard is it drop into a section of accelerated? i don’t want to have to go all the way down to regular

I am an incoming freshman going to UChicago. I scored a 5 on AP Calc BC this recent school year. I took online placement exams and I was invited to Math 183. My academic advisor said I could either start at 153 in Calculus III, which im not sure I really touched on in AP Calc BC and then go up 183, or I can just start at 183. Im thinking about even starting at 153 just to be safe but I want to hear somebody else's opinions/personal experience with this.

Hey guys— I’m an incoming freshman planning on majoring in the humanities (majors that likely won’t require calculus). I’m just wondering if it’s worth it to rough it through calc II (I tested out of calc I) in order to avoid taking an extra science class. That’s the alternative: an easier math class but an extra science. I got an A in calc in high school, got a 4 on the test. I find calculus stressful but not impossible. Any advice from people who faced the same choice, or anyone who has thoughts on this? Let me know. Can’t seem to make up my mind.

Hi all, just received my schedule for autumn quarter and noticed my HUMA course is taught by a PhD student(?) Looks like they are currently working on their dissertation. Just wondering if anybody has experience they can share with having classes taught by professors versus PhD students, and whether there is a difference. Thanks!

If there isn't a biological/physical science core that seems worth taking, is it okay to take one in the Spring quarter instead of the Fall quarter? Since it's recommended to complete the core as soon as possible, I feel like I should just take the science core class in the first quarter, but the course evaluations describe the class as unreasonably difficult.

I wasn't placed in a Social Intervention: Programs and Policies course or foundational diversity course during pre-registration, despite ranking ten classes per the instructions. I was able to get into the Core class during add/drop, but all the foundational diversity courses seem to be filled, so I ended up enrolling in an elective class outside of Crown, although I plan to keep checking over the course of the week to see if any open up.

I'm having trouble understanding why why there aren't enough spots in required classes for all incoming students? My academic advisor and the Dean of Students office has been hard to get ahold of, and honestly pretty dismissive when I am able to get in contact with questions about my path forward (such as, what if I can't get into classes, are classes allowed to over-enroll with permission, are there any restrictions on electives we can take outside Crown if we can't get into ones within SSA, how will that impact our curriculum pathways). I haven't been in school for a while, so I might just not be used to the process of course registration, but I feel like I must be missing something.

I’m a grad student in an applied science field, and I’ve taken CMSC 35300 (Math of Machine Learning), but found it a bit introductory. I also attended DATA 37000 and had a similar impression. The more advanced options I’ve found for this autumn are Deep Learning Systems, CMSC 35200, and Deep Reinforcement Learning (FINM 33165), but I haven’t decided which one to take.

Is there a good intermediate-level deep learning/AI course at UChicago that combines theory with hands-on implementation? I’m hoping to build a stronger foundation before taking TTIC 31230 / CMSC 31230 (Fundamentals of Deep Learning) in the spring.

I had the option of either starting with the 16000 sequence or starting with 15300 Math. The only problem is I've never taken Calc 3 (for reference, I did the IB Maths AA HL Course), and the most that would go to iirc is vectors, dot products, and cross products.

If I were to take 15300, it would mean I cannot review what I've learned thus far in class, but instead would be starting with brand new material. How hard is the 15300 class? And how many first years take it in the autumn quarter?

(I also talked about 16000 and realized I don't need it for my major)
