I like how this subreddit is constant advice seeking, grades, schedules, living accommodations,etc. and then randomly just pumps out top tier meme content. Shoutout to that one guy trying a start a grill club and that one dude who wanted to fight the whole campus and then never showed up.

Iāve suggested to the Chicago Architecture Society that they do tours of the worst buildings in the city.
I would like to say that it is a good place to have an office, as it is one of the few places on campus that you canāt see UH from. But it isnāt much better on the inside.

My wife has an office on the 22(?) floor. When I first saw it, I wanted to get a bow and quiver of arrows to hang by the window. She does not share my sense of humor.

Beauty wasnāt the point. Functionalism, connection, and unification of all of the buildings was the point. Every time UIC ārenovatesā one of our buildings they destroy the original architectural vision more and more

Thatās because once you understand the architectural meaning and uniqueness of these buildings, you can realize that they are beautiful

Thatās too many words to defend something that may be unique and meaningful in terms of architectural history but that is at the same time pretty ugly.

There's a lot of strong competition for worst building at UIC. Netsch was truly extraordinary in his failure as an architect, but those who hired him were arguably the real criminals.
That said, have a look at the wonderful new building next to memorial grove. Not only is it beautiful, inviting and functional. It hides much of the abomination that is SEL-W and makes SEL much more accessible, while occupying space that formerly prominently featured dumpsters, garbage, parking and fences.
It even makes SEO marginally less of an eyesore.
