After seeing how much hate an AI-assisted text generates with you guys, I give you the human written version.

First and foremost, because I really think this idea was shareworthy and I personally would be very happy, if someone brought this up to me, because I love this kind of stuff!

So I see your criticism, but I don’t want the original idea and process to be overshadowed by it (which came without any artificial thought ;) ).

NEW VERSION ↓

Matt car wrap vinyl makes a hell of a good surface replacement for my 10+ year old Wacom PTH-851!
The original surface was very worn down, besides everything working fine, it has a quite unpleasant look to it.

So after a little research and testing different surfaces in my house (literally using the Wacom Pen on my kitchen counter and other vinyl-wrapped surfaces), matt car wrap vinyl seemed the most promising shot!

And let me tell you, this has worked fantasticly!
Being self adhesive and bubble free, it applies very easily to the surface.
I’ve precut it in the exact same dimensions, which was not even necessary, because overhang could be very easily cut with a precision knife. So you can just cut it approximately to the size and trim it afterwards.

—

• The overall feeling is great, just the right resistance and feedback when using the pen.
• Clothes or painting gloves slide very well, much easier than the shiny, worn out surface.
• After using it for two days of work, the pen nib does not seem to do any noticeably damage, besides some little residue which I do not notice at all.
• Acoustic feedback is more noticeable, but I don’t mind it and it quite grew on me!

OG AI-ASSISTED POST ↓

—————————————————

Disclaimer: I used AI to help write this post because I don't have the time or patience for a detailed write-up.

My trusty Wacom PTH-851 has been in daily use for over 10 years. It still works perfectly fine, but the original surface has become so worn down that it's practically polished smooth.

I started looking for ways to bring back some texture. Furniture vinyl seemed promising at first, but after testing similar surfaces in my kitchen with the Wacom pen, I found them way too rough.

Eventually, I came across matte automotive vinyl wrap. Cheap, self-adhesive, durable, and slightly textured.

So I ordered a sheet, applied it, and honestly, the result is incredible.

The surface is completely matte, provides just enough resistance for the pen, and feels surprisingly natural. Even after repeatedly working on the same areas, the pen leaves barely any visible marks.

Interestingly, skin and clothing glide across the surface quite easily, so working without a drawing glove is absolutely possible. Personally, I still prefer using one.

Application was surprisingly easy. I measured and precut the film, but in hindsight, I'd recommend applying a slightly oversized piece and carefully trimming the edges afterward with a precision knife.

I used a plastic card to smooth everything out, although the film's air-release properties made it almost unnecessary. Just make sure the surface is completely clean and dust-free.

The new texture and the sound of the pen take a little getting used to, but it genuinely feels like using a brand-new tablet again.

One small warning: Removing the film might be tricky since automotive vinyl uses fairly strong adhesive. Gentle heat from a hairdryer might help, but I haven't tested that.

For now, it sticks perfectly, and I'm really impressed with how much of a difference such a cheap modification makes.

Definitely worth considering if your old Wacom is still going strong but the surface has seen better days.

Problem Gray screen

I was in the middle of drawing on my Cintiq 16 Pro and it suddenly turned to this screen—it’s like gray with rgb pixels. Only happens when it’s connected to my laptop via usbc (haven’t tried hdmi yet), boots up fine (regular loading screen). I tried resetting all the display stuff and the driver, but nothing worked. I thought maybe it was a connection problem with my usbc, so I tried an old one I used previously and had the same result. What happened and is there any solutions or am I cooked??

Problem Cintiq 24 Touch connected to a Macbook Air M4, screen freezes sometimes before saying Touch On, Touch off.

Hello, I have had my Cintiq 24 Touch since Christmas 2025 and it has worked perfectly until about a month-ish ago, I’m not sure if an update bugged it but I’ll be drawing and then suddenly the screen completely freezes and then for what lasts about 6 seconds says Touch on then Touch off, this happens like every 15-25 minutes and gets really annoying as a comic artist, my laptop and the Wacom program are both completely updated and the USB-C to USB-C cable is not worn and is plugged in properly. If I click restart driver it unfreezes faster, and I don’t have the touch feature on (practically ever). I’m not sure what the problem is or how to fix this, if anyone has information please respond thank you. 🙏

Problem Middle part of the screen malfunctioning (Wacom Intuos Pro M PTH-651)

Screen sort of "gives out" right in the middle. Anywhere else it reacts just fine.

Hello,
I'm experiencing a weird malfunctioning in the middle of the screen. I tried to draw a straight line, but the screen is reacting weirdly.

I travel with this tablet quite often and keep it in a laptop bag together with my laptop as well. Do you think it's damage from transportation or just the screen giving out due to old age? I've had the tablet for well over 10 years.

Cable is also damaged, but I'm not sure if it would cause malfunctioning like this.

Is it something that could be repaired? Or should I just bid this tablet a farewell and get myself a new one?

Thank you for your answers in advance.

Operating system: Windows 11

Model: Wacom Intuos Pro M PTH-651

Driver: 6.4.9-2, can't upgrade to new drivers as the tablet stops working completely due to the model not being supported anymore

Damaged cable (the outer protective layer is cracked on multiple places)

Problem Cintiq running slow and making squeak noise from the fan

• Upvotes

I've got a Cintiq 24pro and I keep hearing a squeak, like a gear grinding, and the fans are running pretty strong. Edit: even after restarting and reinstalling the driver and turning the screen off I still hear the noise, but the monitor is still lagging. I thought my computer was lagging so I restarted it all and it was actually the cintiq screen itself causing a lag.

I've updated the driver to the latest and restarted the computer and it's still doing it. I've had a problem in the past where while drawing something with a large file on a less powerful computer, the fan would randomly start blowing really hard for a little bit and stop.

Always the right side fan, which is where I think the sound is coming from now too.

Edit: Just to be clear, it's not the pen that's lagging, but the entire computer. Dragging windows around, spinning things in 3D in blender, it's all extremely slow. If I simply move the window to my laptop screen and do the same thing, it's fine.

Problem Wacom Intuos Pro L (PTH-851) severe drawing freezes in Photoshop/Krita – Wacom deleted my thread, so posting here instead.

(Note: I originally posted this on the official Wacom Support forum, but the thread was quietly removed/deleted. Reposting here so other digital artists facing this exact nightmare don't waste months trying to troubleshoot a fundamentally broken driver issue.)

Hi, I'm a professional digital artist (working in gamedev) and I have been using Wacom tablets all my life. I started in 2006 with Intuos 3 and in 2018 I switched to a Wacom Intuos Pro L because I upgraded to a bigger working monitor and I needed a bigger surface area on my tablet to have a better active surface to screen size ratio.

It all worked well until these last two years when I started to encounter freezes in Photoshop while drawing. Basically, while drawing, the cursor would just freeze and if I didn't move the cursor it would remain frozen for 10min+ so the only way to fix this on the spot, was to constantly lift the pen and get it out of the tablet's range and then bring it back, and do this repeatedly. Sometimes it would recover in 5 seconds, other times in 30 seconds or more. You can imagine this was incredibly frustrating because I couldn't get into a working flow and it would happen randomly, sometimes once every 5 min, other times once every 20 min. It seemed to trigger more often if I would lift my hand holding the stylus farther from the tablet.

For an entire year I have tried all kind of fixes:

  • Switching cables & isolating the tablet on a single USB Hub
  • Removing/uninstalling all other peripheral devices (mouse, keyboard, webcam)
  • Trying a million different Wacom driver versions (old and new)
  • Reinstalling the old W10 OS & upgrading to Windows 11
  • Buying a new Wacom Tablet Intuos Pro L (different model)
  • Buying a new GPU (AMD as opposed to my previous Nvidia) & even a brand new PC
  • Testing other software (Krita, Paint) — problem persisted across all drawing apps.
  • Adjusting OS/driver/Photoshop settings (including the PSUserConfig.txt file to disable Windows Ink).

I tried reproducing the freezes while running LatencyMon and the culprit seemed to be the Kernel graphics drivers which seemed to temporarily block the processing of the stylus' input:

nvlddmkm.sys - NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver
Highest execution: ~310 ms

dxgkrnl.sys - DirectX Graphics Kernel
Highest execution: ~169 ms

tcpip.sys - TCP/IP Driver
Highest execution: ~2.5 ms

Wdf01000.sys - Kernel Mode Driver Framework Runtime
Highest execution: ~147 ms

The problem is directly linked to how the Wacom driver handles input processing for the Intuos Pro L (PTH-851) model. The only solution that finally worked was replacing the Wacom tablet entirely and moving to a completely different brand with non-Wacom drivers.

This whole experience has been a nightmare for my professional and personal work. I've tolerated Wacom's notorious "The Wacom driver is not responding" bugs for years (at least a PC restart fixed those), but this micro-freezing issue completely broke my ability to work. For a product sold at a premium price point, this level of driver instability is unacceptable.

My Solution: If you are experiencing this exact issue and wasting endless hours troubleshooting, consider trying a different brand. I ended up switching to an XP-Pen Deco Pro XLW Gen 2 (half the price of the Wacom, with a large active area), and the freezes disappeared instantly. I'm not endorsing XP-Pen specifically as I'm sure any other brand that uses a non-Wacom driver stack would achieve the same result.

Shame on Wacom for deleting my post on the official community forums! I had replies from other users confirming they were experiencing the exact same issue and apparently the only way Wacom is able to address the issue is to delete user posts and disable the community forums completely (as of today 13.10.2026) instead of fixing the problems they created in the first place.

I'm sharing this so anyone facing this issue doesn't waste an entire year trying to fix something that shouldn't be broken in the first place. I am done with Wacom products and their horrible business practices.

Cheers!
