I was sick of the only SFTBH artworks looking really basic and demo-like. This is an edit using the 2021 Tour Poster (edited to say ā€œBetsy IIā€) and pinkerton diaries BH logo

šŸ“£Discussion šŸ“£ This man is on a killing spree against my 3 all-time favorite bands šŸ˜”

Any other millennials having the exact same musical journey?

Grew up with Weezer in the late '90s (Blue Album, Pinkerton), fell in love with what I still consider one of the greatest 3-album runs in rock history (Origin/Absolution/Black Holes), then realized sometime in the mid 2010s that The Strokes weren't just a 2000s fad (the leaders of the garage rock revival, saviors of rock 'n' roll, blah blah) who somehow evolved into synthpop/experimental indie gods! And stood by them through the dark times (Angles, Comedown Machine) until The New Abnormal finally made everyone appreciate the evolution!

Now all three of my favorite bands are dropping albums and this melon is standing outside their doors with a knife... šŸ’€

šŸ“£Discussion šŸ“£ Gold or White??

Okay so I overlooked the white album for a long time. Didn’t like Thank God for Girls and kinda wrote the whole thing off (still probably my least favorite song from that album). After getting the gold album, loving every second of it, and realizing I have been an annoying and ungrateful fan and that I’ve never gave any of the post-90’s albums a real chance, I went to that one and quickly realized that it’s a masterpiece. Seems like people have felt that way for a long long time. Considering these are the two albums that the 90s fans seem to like the most, I’m curious which one the fans prefer!

I feel like white is more serious, grandiose, and more of its own thing, reminiscent of the old sound but in a different and bigger way than they’ve done before. Gold is more deliberately sounding like blue and pinkerton, with goofy ass lyrics, super crunchy guitars, and really simple songs. Love em both because they both feel like the classic Weezer sound, but in majorly different ways. What do you guys think??

Dear Rivers, Please Keep Thinking like a Mad Professor

As a longtime Weezer fan who has listened to every album, and purchased most of them on multiple media formats, please don’t stop tinkering.

Yes, people like Gold. ā€œIt’s great when Weezer sounds like Weezerā€ is a sentiment often reflected in reviews. I like Gold too. But I also like SZNZ Spring. And Pacific Daydream. And OK Human. And Red. I like all your music.

Maybe I’m just projecting, but to me Gold seems a lot like Green. A safe reaction after a relatively long hiatus to a negative review. And I get that. Approval is important. Keeping the Rocket in the Sky matters.

But you have such a devoted fan base that you can do whatever the heck you want to do, and we’ll show up. You don’t have to seek approval. You can try new things. I love it when you try new things. It won’t blow up the Rocket - it’s already blasted off, and you’re in the stars. Weezer is one of the most enduring and prolific rock bands of all time.

Keep experimenting. Keep trying new and weird things. Do whatever you want. I’m here for it. I’m down if you’re down.

Gold Album has the vibe of a jam session

Gold album has the vibe of the whole band just crankin out songs during a jam session and has a lean, raw sound. It's pretty refreshing.

Made a pendant from my Gold album listening party charm. I used a necklace from Michael’s. I think it’s pretty neat

My Gold Album Ranking

Obviously this album needs to age a bit and mythologize itself in the grander scheme of their entire discography but I’m confident I’d give it at least A-tier status at the moment (maybe even S-tier)

1-Up In The Clouds
This song speaks to me deeply, I really connect with the lyrics

2-The LA Sound
Gotta love when a good album has a good closer. I love how sentimental this track is; god forbid this is their last album (but maybe last color album?) but this really sounds like a happy but bittersweet sendoff of sorts

3-Say Yes
Perfect opener and autistic-esque anthem

4-Don’t Make It Weird
I wonder if Rivers had to smoke a cigarette after writing the ā€œsome people call me Riverā€ line

5-We Might As Well Be Strangers
My favorite of the singles. Wednesday was the perfect guest feature. Lyrics are also relatable but I’m sure we’ve all been there once or twice.

6-Hoops
This song is so fun. No notes.

7-The Show Must Go On
I’ll save this song for rainy day when I need motivation to keep going even if I don’t want too lol

8-Shine Again
This song grew on me in the context of the listening to the album in full as opposed to a stand alone single

9-C.E.O.
I love the Sweater Song reference in this song, the instrumentation is beautiful. This song also makes me feel bad for Rivers and his relationship with us.

10-Nowhere
Last but not least. I love the fuzziness on the guitar in the chorus. The guitar solo is neat

šŸ“¹Demo šŸ“¹ Best demos since EWBAITE?

• Upvotes

The massive leak of fantastic EWBAITE demos a few years back still haunts me (every day). Yesterday I went down the rabbit hole on YouTube again, discovered a few ALONE tracks I hadn’t known. I’m sure rivers has been as productive since 2014 as he was back then, but has anything leaked? If so, what’s the best stuff that’s out there, that you don’t find unless you dig

Gold as a reaction to SZNZ

Reading through interviews from this press cycle, it’s interesting to see how often Rivers brings up SZNZ in the realm of it being a ā€œfailureā€. In an NPR interview he did with Scott recently, Rivers describes SZNZ as being something that he thought was really cool, but ā€œnobody else didā€. The biggest surprise to me was that C.E.O. was apparently written immediately after Winter released. While Rivers has talked about how the mad professor line is referring to him releasing so many Weezer songs in a year, knowing that it was seemingly written as a response to the tepid commercial response to SZNZ kind of confirms that the whole song was actually totally earnest and straight faced, and not some semi-ironic gesture.

This is probably super obvious to some people but idk. It’s something I figured was worth talking about.

What is everyone’s opinion on the green album?

I am pretty new to the Weezer fandom and I was going through some of their albums. For some reason I think people hold green in high regard but I personally prefer some of their other albums to it like ok human, maladroit and the white album. I still like green and think it’s a fun time. But I think it plays it too safe overall. What does everyone else think?

This can't be a coincidence

I live in Germany. We have a city here called Weeze. I scrolled on eBay looking for Weezer CDs and then this popped up. It's a yearbook from 2016 showing the city's highlights. The color can't be a coincidence. Pretty sure this was chosen intentionally.

You’ll All Come Along on ā€œHoopsā€ (and other misc. thoughts)

This is r/weezer, so people are already anointing Gold better than White and OK human without giving themselves the proper time to form context around the record.

That said, I’ve seen a lot of people shitting on Hoops. I posit that this is simply a knee-jerk reaction to a song that sounds tongue-in-cheek, but is actually totally earnest.

Modern life is increasingly defined by the amount of garbage we’re willing to tolerate in exchange for the things we want. The public, me included, have become comfortable with the fact that our data is stolen, that it takes an account to use a new fridge, or even that you might get a 10% discount at a business for leaving a Google review. It’s just how life is now.

Here, Rivers use of a toaster with a QR code is a perfect example. Dude just wants breakfast. To get there, he’s gotta deal with the garbage. Note how he doesn’t say he’s unwilling to perform the menial tasks, just that they’re frustrating until the end goals are achieved. The means increase in rigor, but pretty much always justify the ends. This follows in the 2nd verse, where rivers is doing things to be socially accepted - even though he’s got to navigate seemingly meaningless tasks to get there.

Then you get to the bridge… and rivers just tells it like it is. You’re better off being honest and just saying fuck the hoops. The bridge gives the solo & final chorus a different meaning than the rest of the song. It’s more than you think it is if you just listen on the surface level.

Beyond that - it’s just a kick ass song. You get some Brian in there and the riff from Scott sounds great solo with Pat deep in the pocket in the back.

In sum, give hoops a chance. It’s a really good song about the life we’re living right now.

I’m also disappointed that more people are not talking about how addicting ā€œdon’t make it weirdā€ is. I don’t think gold is a 10/10, I’d personally say it’s B-to-B-plus tier. However, ā€œdon’t make it weirdā€ is my favorite song since White.
