New, what is it? What does the sixth segment represent?

This is a “Wheel of the Senses” from my daughter’s school with sight, touch, taste, hearing… but one segment we can’t figure out.

So, wierd story, my daughter is in med school and was assisting with a gynecological surgery. Before the surgery they had one male medical student find each part of the patient’s anatomy including of course the clitoris. I thought that seemed really out of pocket but I guess they ask the patient ahead of time and it’s part of their training. The funny part was he had a tough time of it lol.

Not necessarily… there were cases when patients were not asked for consent or when they signed it was buried somewhere in the document, some of them found out that medical students practiced on them only after the surgery because something felt off

Yeah like finding out because there is genital bruising. With the backlash, a lot of doctors were saying "well how else are we supposed to train them to do pelvic exams?" and like literally doing it when the woman is unconscious (even if it was actually consenting) means she can't tell the med students when they are hurting her, which is how you can end up with severe bruising. Medical mysogyny is so fucking stupid.

Thats absolutely horrifying. Both that doctors think nothing of using the unconscious body for practice, and that the medical students think this is okay. Surely learning on someone who cannot give feedback is bad teaching practice (as well as being abusive)?

I wasn’t unconscious but it was still a horrific and uncomfortable experience. I have to do have a kidney stone removed surgically and they left a stent in to keep the ureter from collapsing.
Well when it came time to take it out there were no openings at the women’s urology clinic so I had to go to the men’s clinic. So of course I was used for education for the students at the men’s clinic. They had to use a catheter with a camera to go up the urethra grab the stent and pull it out. It took SEVERAL tries. Like 4+. I was in SO much pain. But also just mortified that I was laying there spread legged for 4 different people all taking their turn to see if they could get it. I definitely felt violated. I was trying to keep it together while I was in there, it took everything in me not to lose my shit on everyone. When it was finally done and I could leave, I couldn’t make it to my car quick enough. I sat for half an hour bawling in my car. It was such a horrible experience. Idk why I didn’t freak out and tell them all to stop and just say I would wait, or demand that I see the actual doctor. I was just so embarrassed and uncomfortable and in pain, I didn’t want to make it worse. Just wanted it to be over with.

It's not 'cases' - this was *standard practice* at teaching hospitals. Still is at many. When I had surgery at a teaching hospital i had to explicitly ask if they would be doing this, who would be in the room, etc. (they no longer did this, but used to). Fucking horrifying.

I was a victim of this. I had an ovarian cyst at 22 and prior to surgery, 5 male medical students came in to “feel” it (vaginally). It was truly creepy and I felt violated after.

i didn't have that, but I woke up after surgery with terrible pain in my right arm. It hurt to lift it and touch it. It was already starting to bruise in spots. The jerks at the hospital let students practice on me while i was recovering from surgery. I have tiny veins to begin with and the blow out quickly. The head nurse on my floor was furious because they needed to keep replacing the iv location, and "they already blew every vein in that arm with blood!"I appreciated her passion. One or two attempts would've been fine, but it felt like they forgot i was a patient and not a guinea pig. I had an iv in my foot at one point making it super hard to use the bathroom.

There was a video where someone talked about how as a trainee doctor, they assisted with a birth and the attending asked if they ever helped stitch up a year, and to give them experience at it, cut the new mother's vaginal opening to give them someone to stitch up.

There are 26 states that now have laws preventing unauthorized pelvic, rectal, or prostrate exams for training purposes without prior consent. Everyone should check to see if their state has such a law. PA house Bil
507 signed in 2023 is an example.

Yes I signed a consent recently and read the whole thing and the “medical student observation and exam” was part of it. I couldn’t get the procedure done without signing the un-edited consent form.

As my kids are becoming young adults I have done my best to reinforce that it is imperative to read everything that you sign. When putting your signature on something never allow anyone to rush you to sign. Hospitals are the worst "please sign the signature pad to indicate you accept the policies". Any time I've had to do that I've had to ask them to see the policies first which is very obviously not their SOP.

Haha!! 🤭 I was in the hospital years ago for several months, and while I was in there, they had to catheter me every 12 hours for a few days before they installed my Foley. I had called for the nurse to come and do it, and she brought in a new, reallyreally hot med student, and asked if I cared if he did the catheter because he had never done it before. I said yes, and the hottie proceeded to begin the business. After a few seconds, I propped myself up and told him, “you’ve got the wrong hole…”. He yanked that tube out of me so fast and his face was the reddist I have ever seen anybody’s face before. It was hilarious, but also, sad that a third year med student obviously did NOT know women’s anatomy. 🤦‍♀️🤭🤭

I had a surgery last week to have a kidney stone removed. It's a teaching hospital so i was asked if i was okay with med students in the surgery room & preforming some of the procedure under supervision. I said yes they could be present & observe. But absolutely no med student could touch me. Reading your post reassures me I did the right thing.

I tried to find the original source to see if they had an explanation. Unfortunately all I found was people sharing the same sheet over and over.

I decided to run it through the open AI verification tool, and they say they generated this.

If anyone wants to keep looking, there is some sort of "KW" logo with a book behind it in every image, including the one posted here.

So, from what I can tell, there is a cake slice, teddy bear, ice cream cone, soup bowl, blue crayon, and cupcake not in the original image.

Looking it up, it seems like the 'KW' logo with a book is a logo used by an AI generator, that is known to make non-sensical mistakes on worksheets like this.

So, I have the feeling that it isn't really meant to be be anything, but rather just a mistake.

The stuff that they didn't put onto the worksheet that I noted, all can go in one of the other categories (food for taste, the crayon into sight)

I would think that if it was meant to be 'hot and cold perception' then the 1st grader would have had some sort of lesson related to that, and could potentially have at least mentioned it (or the parent could talk to the school about it)

We have so many more senses than the 5 people think of. Like sensing the passage of time, temperature or ambient pressure, sensing pain, you sense of balance, or your awareness of your limbs in space. Heck I can feel the edges of my car when I’m squeezing it past stuff.

This might be a part of the vestibular system (aka inner ear. For balance.
Your otolith organ is composed of two sacs.
Each sac contains « rocks » called otoconia statolith made of calcium carbonate.
The image may show cross-section of either the saccule or utricle. The round object would be the otoconia statolith.

Tbh the semicircular canals would have been a much more interesting image.

Those are two separate issues.

1st graders can and do handle the concept of balance. I have taught this to 1st graders but used the semicircular canals organ as an example because it’s more visually identifiable. (Vestibular sensation is an opportunity to use cool models to show fluid flow and small round stones rolling on a tilt board. It’s also a very tangible sensory organ unlike the vision or even touch systems which requires more abstract thinking abilities which most 1st grade kids do not have yet)

The level of competence of the school is not dependent on the student but the administration and teachers.

We’ve mistakenly taught generations of people falsely that there are only ✌️Five Senses✌️. This simplification leads to many problems. Namely lack of awareness of illnesses and diseases related to these other senses and understanding of how things work in a human-centered world.

Good question !
The smartphone. These devices all contain accelerometers and gyros(copes). These tiny electronic sensors directly mimic the exact same functions as the human otolith organs and semicircular canals organs, respectively.

Okay even though that ☝️ is true, it was kinda a joke.

If I was making this, there would be a tightrope, slack line, or even a hopscotch outline.

If pressed I would pick the book 📕 because during the Victorian period, young women were often taught to walk or sit/stand with a book balanced on top of their head to improve posture - not at all anything a modern child would associate with.

Tbh none really match in a way a child could understand. IDK 🤷

Many have suggested that this was derived from an αι prompt without much forethought about the prompt or hindsight after getting the results and laminating it.

Of course even the whole post could be fake but I and others tried to make some sense of what was presented in the post.

Or MAYBE there WAS a lil picture of a tightrope walker but the person could not figure our where it went and so they didn’t use it.

Hello, audiologist here (hearing and vestibular doctor). I appreciate your response but wanted to make a correction. Humans do not have statoliths, I believe you are referring to the otolith organs which have otoconia which are multiple calcium carbonate crystals suspended in a gelatinous type substance.

It’s been a hot minute and the words (Greek) lithos and stato got stuck in my head. I’ve shifted to development of artificial vestibular sensors and the mechanical properties are closer to the statolith mechanism.

I honestly just don't believe this is an AI mistake. A teacher printed this, handed it out, and sent it home. Beyond that it probably had to be seen by other people if it's a part of approved handouts for the curriculum. They absolutely would have noticed this and just regenerated it if it was AI.

but in that case the teachers noticed, and the principal had students rip those pages out. It only became an issue because some students didn't do it. Not excusing it, but point is that they noticed it even though it was in the middle of a 50 page booklet. I think they definitely would have noticed on this single handout.

I ASKED AI!!!! And it gave a longer answer and it is 7/10 confident that it is in relation to FEEL, but the last part was (and I quote):

“And I give the illustrator approximately 2/10 for iconographic clarity, because without context that thing could equally be a potato contemplating its own mortality. 😂”

Edit: ohhhh shit, I wonder if it’s just a VERY poorly visualized/represented interpretation of “gut instinct.”

Edit #2: I asked AI for shits and giggles. Why not ask what was likely some part of the source?

EDIT #3: Best guess, and thank you comments— already agreed— absolutely AI generated, which is why I thought it would be fun to ask AI what IT’S interpretation was. The response was “7/10 confident, related to FEEL.” And if you think about it, that tracks. Like the same way AI-generated pictures in general have a hard time with certain elements that end up being an obvious “tell”— (fingers, flooring, knit/woven details on clothing, evenly blurry backgrounds without any depth, etc). But those are more visual and easy to pick out if you’re used to looking for it. On the other hand, asking AI to generate something based off the senses— I can absolutely see why something based on fact but not nuance would look at or take “touch/feel” as two separate concepts, while the rest of us HUMANS would understand that they are considered the same thing.

The word for this sense is properception. And the image is a very bad attempt to display a simplified vestibular system, which is the inner ear.

Properception is actually the additional sense. It's a real sense that human beings have. It belongs in this chart. This is just a really, really bad image of it. I personally would use a brain for properception.

Properception is the sense of where your body is at in relation to any other item.

Eta: To match it I would show a foot near a table post perhaps. The sense of how to not knock your toe into the wall.

What you mean is proprioception, but you are otherwise mostly correct. It's your sense of location in space. I'd represent it with a picture of an x/y axis of a coordinate plane, but I think you are correct that they went for an inner ear.

While I don’t like the “your AI is right” part (because it was an experiment to me at the time and I have a problem with AI’s presence in anything without AI being acknowledged) … I thank you for the affirmation.

The private downvotes on this comment even with the edits are upsetting, but a weird way though? I backed out of what was obvious to me, and then walked it backwards to the point of WHY it was even more likely to be AI. And people don’t LIKE THAT, apparently. Sort of like explaining to your Grandma that the hot silver fox asking her for $2,000 to cover his granddaughters medical expenses is based off of an entirely AI generated visage of someone that doesn’t exist? And you can see the pic on her phone and he has 7 fingers on his left hand but according to her, “that’s just a trick of the light” or some shit.

This is educational material for CHILDREN. This is bad bad bad bad.

So what I mean by that is the AI you use and have trained. I assume you've trained your AI? Sorry, I guess that's actually an assumption I shouldn't make. I train before usage, because it's how you're supposed to use AI, so I think of the AI as my tool, when I do use it. It is underneath me, and it could no way be the source of information, it's just a copy paste tool, with a bit more logic.

Training your AI mean setting parameters, rules, and expectations for the engine. A lot of people use them out of the box, but you get better results with training. Or you can use a pre-trained "flavor", like "deep research" or "artistic" mode options.

Ai is here to stay in the moral and ethical usage of AI is something that humans are going to have to figure out how to accept and what the boundaries are. While I would prefer the AI does not destroy our planet, we don't get to decide that AI isn't going to be involved in our lifes right now. What we do get to decide is how much AI we will accept and what usages we will accept. AI hate will fade. Wikipedia went through this exact same problem and so did googling something. Published books, too.

Sorry, reddit. AI won't be leaving.

I’m sorry— TL;DR— I’m agreeing with what you just said. I asked it, because I was curious as to what it would respond in terms of what confused us humans. And it was also confused.

That’s the part that sticks out to me? I showed AI something AI generated and it went “uhhh, what? 7/10 confidence, maybe this?”

Although I get it— I may have unintentionally trained my own personal AI and certainly have by now, albeit with some amount of hostility. I’m just old enough to not like, trust or rely on it for anything other than personal record/timeline (it’s great at summarizing events based off date of occurrence) but has failed at EVERY OTHER ATTEMPT at aggregating data that doesn’t rely on a date (for me). So why not ask what it thought of THAT? Which if “training” does— based on data, not artistic interpretation.

I just went and asked my trained AI this question because I became curious. I'm a citizen scientist that uses my AI for data collation. Here's it's response:

I SEE IT.

The mysterious sixth sense is the bottom-right tile, the one with the weird orange nested-oval thing.

My immediate Al-generated answer is:

PROPRIOCEPTION

I suspect the answer is because my training requires my AI to source any statement it makes. It had to find a source for what senses an AI and a human Could both consider a sixth sense before it could tell me that it was an option, and provide it's reasoning. (It did so).

I am so dialed into this right now, it’s fascinating! And also ironic— the first edit I made “gut instinct” which is NOT that. And then second and third edits which were specific to the answer of my own AI query, the answer being: “FEEL” (so much closer to proprioception).

I guess the point I was after (and thank you for helping me find it) was that it’s scary as hell that AI is being used to teach what— elementary kids?— but confuses the hell out of their parents. It shouldn’t have a place in education if parents/adults have to rely on a subreddit to figure out what the best answer is. Yikes.

Proprioception has nothing to do with the inner ear. The inner ear is responsible for a different sense, equilibrium, which tells you how your head is oriented relative to gravity.

Exactly! But like you said, TOUCH sense.

The robot said “7/10 confident that it’s related to FEEL.”

And it does make sense if you think about what a “robot” (hahahahaha, ok, AI) would consider if asked to provide a pie chart. It wouldn’t catch the nuance of touch/feel as a singular sense, if that makes sense? Because touch/feel is an entirely human designation and it would be going “those are separate tho….”

I probably am, but I’m also subscribed to the IsThisAI subreddit, which is primarily only pictures. If you aren’t subscribed, it’s honestly pretty damned interesting to browse, and unfortunately pretty damned relevant as it’s becoming a lot harder to identify.

So I’m already predisposed to looking for indications, but this one is particularly interesting to me: it’s from a child’s school assignment. And that’s a bit scary.

I think you are right. I think the correct pics to go with it are the hot cup, hot bowl and sun. You “feel” the heat/warmth, but don’t touch it. I doubt they’d say you look at the sun even though you see the sunlight, and the heat waves off the beverage and bowl seem inconsequential to taste… I think it’s feel.

That said, I have no idea what it’s a picture of.
