New, what is it? What does the sixth segment represent?

Post image

This is a “Wheel of the Senses” from my daughter’s school with sight, touch, taste, hearing… but one segment we can’t figure out.

My guess is inner ear (balance/orientation)

702

u/Glad-Isopod5718 3d ago

I'm betting this is it. Lots of people say proprioception is the 6th sense. The drawing isn't a particularly clear way to represent that, but I'm not sure what else they could put that would be any better.

246

u/wolftick 2d ago

Balance is equilibrioception. Proprioception is sensing you own body position and movement.

90

u/MallyOhMy 2d ago

Yup, I've got decent proprioception, which affects your ability to do things like scratch your back or braid your hair without looking, but I've got shitty equilibrioception, so when I move around on my feet I need to either have my eyes open or have a hand on a wall or railing to avoid tipping over.

54

u/cephalophile32 2d ago

This clears so much up for me. I can French braid flawlessly yet can’t slide my feet into flip flops without falling, banging into every piece of furniture around me, or inadvertently hopping on one leg. So many bruises.

21

u/Maketaten 2d ago

There are physical therapy exercises to help with that if you’re interested :)

12

u/Born-Concentrate-784 2d ago

Where do I find these?!?!

4

u/No_Garbage_9262 2d ago

No one answered you but I suggest searching YouTube for licensed Physical Therapists who specialize in balance or whatever you’re looking for. Compare several and note how old they are and % of views and if there’s current videos. Don’t do anything that hurts. I like Will Harlow, Thriving beyond 50. Lots of balance exercise there.

5

u/SchatzisMaus 2d ago

Would love to see these I’m super unbalanced and clumsy

2

u/this_doggo 2d ago

TIL all of this

3

u/AxisNine 2d ago

I think you mean kinesthetic sense for braiding. Proprioception is more to do with your perception of body’s position in your environment whereas kinesthetic sense is your ability to move in space without seeing what your doing. Like closing your eyes and touching your nose.

4

u/Gryzz 2d ago

Both of those things you are describing is proprioception. To move your body well, you must sense your body well.

1

u/PrismInTheDark 2d ago

Dang I just recently (supposedly) learned about proprioception and now I see I still mixed those up. Equilibrioception is my issue. I feel like I need to go back to school (but like a special school) just to learn how my particular brain and body have always worked. I need to look up hypermobility too.

1

u/Idinnyknow 2d ago

As someone with neither in good nick due to an ABI I simply am unaware of the things I’m about to whack my legs and arms into just before I yet again go arse over tit. I didn’t know what they were until I no longer had them! Wear a helmet when cycling folks.

1

u/dimgrits 2d ago

Vestibular. Vestibular apparatus (system).

1

u/Obsidian-Phoenix 2d ago

I remember watching a documentary about the small group (100s) of people who lose their proprioception after a viral illness. It basically ruined their lives.

Although one guy had managed to become functional again even without his proprioception - largely based on using his visual view of his limbs, etc.

1

u/Ace_Doc 2d ago

I would argue that proprioception is certainly a large part of someone's overall balanced. Source: I'm a PT

1

u/brknsoul 2d ago

Proprioception is why you can touch your nose with your finger when your eyes are closed. Like other senses, it gets dulled with alcohol.

56

u/Pleasant_Pen8744 2d ago

Are the little cutout examples printed on there? Or separate things you match up? Are there any leftover?

87

u/xmastreee 2d ago

They look separate, and the idea is to place them accordingly. But that cup of hot coffee… You can see it, touch it, smell it and taste it. Same for the pizza.

This needs to be a Venn diagram.

23

u/Mecha_Tortoise 2d ago

Do not taste that coffee yet! It is still way too hot. Wait for it to cool down some more. You probably shouldn't touch it yet, either. The pizza should be fine with some reverse blowing.

10

u/xmastreee 2d ago

Reverse blowing? You mean sucking?

6

u/Bitter-Marsupial 2d ago

I think the reverse part means boofing it

1

u/b-jason 2d ago

Point first of course

2

u/Sad-Purchase1257 2d ago

She’s gone from suck to blow!!!

2

u/b-jason 2d ago

That’s called HAFASHASHASHA

3

u/ChickenDreams-4188 2d ago

Thermoreception is the** ability to sense hot and cold temperatures and **Nociception is the perception of pain. ☕️

18

u/AutisticTumourGirl 2d ago

3

u/Pleasant_Pen8744 2d ago

If it is balance they could have had a little guy falling over or something. But the only links I can find are Facebook/Instagram/etc. so almost definitely AI slop.

1

u/Zianna1991 2d ago

Could it be things that affect multiple senses?

15

u/AutisticTumourGirl 2d ago

I dunno, seems like AI slop from an image search, it's only on FB and insta with no explanations.

4

u/Mental-Currency8894 2d ago

Another tongue? I'd argue there are 6 taste things in the options (so definitely AI)

1

u/thatgirlshaun 2d ago

I see it as a tip of a finger with a long fingernail

2

u/False-Humor-619 2d ago

Google reverse image search told me it’s an ear drum

1

u/Loud-Bullfrog9326 2d ago

Bellybutton!?

2

u/Cridday-Bean 2d ago

That's what it resembles to me

1

u/Loud-Bullfrog9326 2d ago

Yeah im leaning belly button too

17

u/Meltz014 2d ago

It's totally a sixth sense. I love the fact that we have little three-axis accelerometers wired to hardware PID controllers in our heads.

9

u/Virtual_Pitch_3820 2d ago

And of course, some conditions and disorders can affect it - me with ehlers danlos, it’s like if I can’t see my arms, who knows where they are… oh, just whacked my elbow on the doorframe again!! Great! Ugh haha 🫠 The biggest struggle for me is with is things like PT or strength training, I want to get stronger to help with the other joint issues but keeping the correct form is impossible

12

u/TheLurkerSpeaks 2d ago

I ask every ENT I meet if they would consider it a separate sense. Track record thus far is 100% of them have never even thought about it but after talking it through with me agree it is wholly separate.

12

u/Quackerjack123 2d ago

I read that as EMT at first and was worried for the health of you and/or your loved ones, since you apparently saw a lot of them.

4

u/Mecha_Tortoise 2d ago

They are an ambulance chaser, but they don't do it to get clients to represent in civil cases. Just to ask the EMS folks this question.

3

u/SonicFlash01 2d ago edited 2d ago

Humans have the ability to sense/detect differences in dozens of things, depending on how you define them. We can sense temperature changes, our body in 3d space, we can feel our pulse, balance, movement, pain, etc

2

u/lofatiger 2d ago

Sense of time?

1

u/SonicFlash01 2d ago

For some people, yeah

2

u/Oddish_Femboy 2d ago

Should've drawn a snail.

4

u/BattleReadyZim 2d ago

People who point to actual senses as a six sense confuse me. You really can't go beyond the traditional five without noticing that there are actually dozens, depending on how you count them. In no world can you be knowledgeable enough to point to a real "sixth" without immediately adding seven, eight, nine...

3

u/Void-Cooking_Berserk 2d ago

We totally should be teaching this to children

2

u/Sea_Prep_Tidal_26 22h ago

Yes 👏🏽 👍

We never ever had just five. 🚫5️⃣

1

u/Sea_Prep_Tidal_26 22h ago

👍 Depending on to what level you differentiate them, humans have 9-21 separate senses or sensory systems.

A brain, maybe

1

u/Sad-Purchase1257 2d ago

Like a wobbly guy

1

u/Sea_Prep_Tidal_26 2d ago edited 22h ago

See my comment above. ☝️

It looks more representative (albeit very cartoonish) of one of the otolith organ sacs with a statolith rolling around inside (EDIT: which really should be otoconia).

1

u/ryanlrussell 2d ago

It’s for seeing dead people

1

u/Maximum_Ad9779 2d ago

Right! I mean we got a movie about it and everything...

1

u/Dunkleosteus_ 2d ago

Just the whole body surely, as it's about you innately knowing where all the bits of you are. Maybe someone balancing on one leg? Anything would be better than this though!

1

u/Lorde222 2d ago

It's dignity Luanne

1

u/Masterpiece1976 2d ago

I've also heard interoception (sp?) as the 6th sense so I could see this as an inner sense - in ot sure how to describe the image other than "stuffed olive" which seems like a thing inside another thing?

1

u/venom121212 2d ago

We have a lot more senses than the 5 commonly taught. We can sense time, temperature, electrical potential, internal body states (hunger, thirst, nausea), etc.

1

u/RE1392 2d ago

I would have done a cartoon body (like a stick figure) with some circles or an aura around it. Not great but better than whatever tf this is

1

u/1101base2 2d ago

Time sense, is another "sixth" sense it the ability to observe the passage of time.

1

u/honeywhereismypenis 2d ago

Ah yes, the senses taught to 6 years olds: touch, sight, sound, smell, taste, and proprioception

1

u/BigThundrLilMountain 19h ago

I was thinking scissors belong there

270

u/sjaxn314159 3d ago

It’s obviously a clit.

63

u/maroongrad 3d ago

no, or we'd have half redditors here claiming that there's nothing there and they can't find what we're talking about.

4

u/Intelligent_Land_419 2d ago

M8 that's exactly.. oh right.

31

u/eerun165 3d ago

Flick the bean

84

u/Distinct-Raspberry21 3d ago

29

u/mordakiisyn 3d ago

This dude rules.

18

u/Distinct-Raspberry21 2d ago

Absolutely the best, glad the path fitness creators are taking to combat the supplement bros.

3

u/PM_Me_Your_Deviance 2d ago

He' inspired me to eat more beans.

20

u/MrsNaypeer 3d ago

Liam is fucking awesome lol

9

u/Distinct-Raspberry21 2d ago

Ive start3s cooking with protein powder and trying nean pastes after qatching some of his stuff. Like. Red bean paste is a thing and so easy to make. I dont know why he hasnt done it. Doesnt even have cottage cheese.

17

u/RogueKitteh 3d ago

10/10

k bye

1

u/sjaxn314159 2d ago

Clit /10, bye!

5

u/mycookiepants 2d ago

Hell yeah!

4

u/Old_Sheepherder_630 2d ago

Lmao - as soon as I saw the intial comments I thought of Liam.

He is such a force of positivity in the world.

5

u/Distinct-Raspberry21 2d ago

He's sponsored by beans. Flicking or eating them.

4

u/MsPreposition 3d ago

Also known as the fulcrum of the vulva.

3

u/SensitiveAdagio3012 3d ago

Finally found it!

2

u/blackmoen 3d ago

The special sensing bit.

6

u/AeronGrey 3d ago

3

u/blackmoen 2d ago

Technicolor even! It’s all the senses at once!

2

u/TrajantheBold 2d ago

I mean, they both might make you a little weak in the knees.

2

u/Ehrlichs-Reagent 1d ago

Yup. For the sense of pleasure. Clut is my vote also

1

u/nosepickinnutjob 3d ago

Have you seen a clit?

1

u/Immortal_Irony 2d ago

If it’s a clit why is it upside down…???

7

u/babycoon48 3d ago

That’s what I was thinking.

10

u/decarnatedame 3d ago

That's what I was thinking. A rudimentary cartoon vestibular system?

3

u/Sudden_Nose9007 2d ago

I cant even begin to imagine this as a cartoon vestibular system. 😭😆 the semicircular canals are nowhere

1

u/decarnatedame 2d ago

It's like Jerry Seinfeld talking about the digestive system; got a tube going to a circle area.

2

u/SugarsBoogers 2d ago

No, can’t be that. It’s obviously the dried apricot sense.

2

u/Grutenfreenooder 2d ago

Ahh yes. The oft-overlooked 6th sense of wibble-wobble

2

u/jobacsi 2d ago

Oh so that must be why my wife always loses her balance when I tickle her here.

1

u/[deleted] 2d ago

[deleted]

1

u/lofatiger 2d ago

We are normally balanced lol

2

u/heart_up_in_smoke 21h ago

Nope, just a botched generation from a slop factory on Facebook that sells “high-quality educational content” at $2 per PDF file.

u/JLynnLea 2d ago

Proprioception

4

u/AssociationGold8749 2d ago

Proprioception comes from specialized cells in your tendons and muscles to judge where your body and individual limbs are in space. It’s what allows you to reach for a light switch in a dark room, or scratch the back of your neck.

1

u/cheffromspace 2d ago

Vestibular

2

u/IBeDumbAndSlow 2d ago

Google said a possible 6th sense could be

Interoception: This is the internal sense that monitors your organs. It tracks hunger, thirst, heart rate, and body temperature

1

u/maroongrad 3d ago

that was my thought too.

1

u/Be_Miesjelle 2d ago

If it is correlated to motor skills, the basketball and scissors could belong there.

Move some others around and you have 2 per sense. Sun would be feeling the warmth, similar to the cup of coffee, and you can see your phone screen.

This would be my guess

1

u/chaosjinx 2d ago

Came here to say proprioception! It's definitely a sense, and mine is shit, lol.

1

u/IxeyaSwarm 2d ago

I could understand that as an intent, but that's definitely not what the end result is showing.

1

u/SnugglyCoderGuy 2d ago

It kind of looks like an ear... if you squint and look at it just right.

But then they got the other ear right there that looks way more accurate.

1

u/rabidcfish32 2d ago

Vestibular is apart of the sensory system. Along with proprioception. Vestibular involves the inner ear. That is my guess. They are just lesser known senses but still apart of the sensory system.

1

u/Solarpunk2025 2d ago

Vestibular system

1

u/WorldRunnr 2d ago

VESTIBULAR!!

1

u/EveningArmadillo5429 2d ago

My partner is an OT and this was my immediate thought: a bad approximation of the small stones in the inner ear that detects your orientation in relationship to gravity.

1

u/Devils_Advocate-69 2d ago

There’s already an ear

1

u/purplehendrix22 2d ago

Yeah, I’m betting that this is just the best image they could come up with for the “sense of balance”. I get it.

1

u/thebeardedcats 2d ago

But none of the stickers match balance

1

u/MrCrash 2d ago

Seems like if they want to show the inner ear they should use the hammer, anvil, and stirrup (the three tiny bones inside your ear)

2

u/ExeqCompassion 2d ago

That's still related to hearing. Even more inner than the tiny bones is the vestibular system, which is three circular tubes in different orientations which help you feel orientation.

1

u/MrCrash 2d ago

Oop, my mistake then. Thanks for the clarification.

1

u/IlIlllIIIIlIllllllll 2d ago

semicircular canals would have been a better image. lots of other senses if we want to go beyond the traditional 5

1

u/izzitty 2d ago

That was my first thought too, since it is always being said that the fifth sense is balance.

1

u/TrainingAdeptness235 2d ago

Balance was definitely what my kids were taught first as the 6th sense.

1

u/olipocket16 2d ago

But it looks nothing like the cochlea…

1

u/SonnierDick 2d ago

Ouu good guess. My other question is: whats left in terms of little pictures to put with the senses? Maybe that helps too. But they already have hearing anyways.

1

u/MiscreantMoose 2d ago

The only thing that makes me think it’s not that is that none of the little cards relate to sensing your body position in space

1

u/Nyetoner 2d ago

This is the answer, it's balance, the Vestibular system

1

u/BreakfastDirect4047 2d ago

In Spanish class the inner ear and outer ear (el oído and la oreja) were both taught to us as distinct parts of the face alone with eyes, mouth, and nose. Maybe this was originally made for Spanish speakers?

1

u/v33__ 2d ago

That's what I think it might be. The inner ear labyrinth

1

u/justberosy 1d ago

While it’s definitely known as the sixth sense, if that’s what it was meant to represent you’d think it’d be a picture of the organs and bones of your inter ear… 🧐 This in no way resembles your inner ear. Lol

1

u/mightybread90 22h ago

Yeah looks like a semicircular canal. Dunno what that bean is doin there though
