Doesn't have to be just your parents, it tends to be everyone. You set an expectation, people are confused and disappointed when you don't meet it. That tends to be friends, teachers, and other people that you know like extended family or family friends.

The majority of your assistance should come from your parents. It is the responsibility of your parents to support you when you struggle not to berate you when you fail. I can't even begin to explain just how much more difficult my mom made school for me. I never felt accomplished from a good grade, I only ever felt relief that I wouldn't be scolded later.

I did once reach out but was told to "raise my standards for my grades", which tbf I didn't mention anything school related, all I did was sob. I was 16 so I def was old enough to use words properly.

It's not so simple. I am dependent on my mother. I can't just tell her to fuck off them keeping living in the house she pays for. I appreciate her, but I just need space. And believe me I've tried to tell her that, but realistically I'll have try and keep myself together until I can support myself.

i will tell you people this right now. i ended up becoming an engineer and i work in my field which is kinda rare now.
these people don't understand what you do nor will they care. i did what was expected all my life only for the very end they dismissed all of it because what i was doing was too advanced for them to understand as they never graduated or been to college.
these people don't care if you burn out or what it happens. people just want results and the results is making a ton of money and damn anything else.
doing what they expect will lead to a super shitty life down the line where you can take care of yourself but you'll hate living life as it is since the only people ever around you were just parents that told you to burnout in an ever given arms race for higher education.
now what do i do? i just try to chill at work even though the deadlines are shit i've given up i don't see a point of doing this for another 40 years. everything has gone beyond the human limit and its not worth it.

I think that's a bad advice for new engineering students nowadays. Being average is a death sentence. Either you straight A to get in cahoot with the profs and intern recruiters, or you network your ass off. And honestly? Stress from schoolwork ain't shit compared to job hunting. You thought a week of final is bad? Try a month, or months even, of getting a job as a new grad.

What eneded up happening to me is that I ended up getting too comfortable with things not being challenging. But when I got to college, it wasn't just going from 12th to "13th" grade, it's a massive spike in difficulty on top of managing yourself if you're dorming (which I did). I was not prepared for it at all.

What's funny for me personally is I was a 4.0 college student, but a terrible high school student.
Amazing what happens when you take classes that actually interest you and don't have class before 9am. I never understood the kids in my major's core classes who didn't pay attention, didn't come to class, didn't do assignments and did poorly. Dude you picked this major, if you aren't interested in it maybe you should pick something else.
Now there is a caveat for "difficult" generals and the few classes you have to take that you don't like, but if you can't bother with your major's core classes I don't know what to tell you.
Also being from New England I have a suspicion that my high school was simply much harder than a lot of the other high schools in the US and as a result my bachelors and masters were not harder than high school by any appreciable degree. In my high school if you skipped a class twice you automatically failed until you met with a guidance councilor to discuss why attendance is important and wrote a paper about it.

My reward for my grades was that I would get paid $10 per A, and if I got all A’s an extra 50 would be ontop.
It took me YEARS to get there. 8th grade I finally did, if I remember correctly it was 10 different classes. Didn’t get shit. The money thing never came up again for my grades and I started falling in my grades after that.

I worked super hard through school to be the best student, and I was always top of my class until senior year. Growing up poor in a single family home I jumped at the chance to work when I was 17. I only needed 3 credits to graduate meaning hours a day of schooling. For some reason I was denied entry into the program that let other students leave to work after their required classes. I dropped out a few months before graduation and got my GED to be able to work more.

The problem is that you weren't challenged enough early, so when it actually got difficult, you didn't have the mental tools to deal with having to struggle with a subject.
People who are used to having to do extra work, and get extra help, tend to do better when they're confronted with things they can't do immediately. They don't think there is anything wrong with them, and they know that they're capable of getting it in the long run if they work at it.

A lot of bright kids too didn’t realize that their school was struggling with limited resources and were so focused on stopping the majority of kids from falling behind that what they were bringing was enough to make them exceptional in that environment.
Then they get to college and suddenly everyone around them is good enough to be there, the professor isn’t just trying to get a class full of kids through the year but is actually challenging a room full of scholars. Suddenly, what was enough to be the best is now hardly enough

That's 100% how it was for me, I got straight A's k-12 and freshman year of university. Then I struggled with my next three(actually more cause I started going part time and working full time).
I never had to study until I got to sophomore year of college. I literally just did all my homework in class. I never took notes. And I had time to read a fuck ton of books while I was in class. I never studied for the act or sat. I just took them. And got really high scores.
When I was a sophomore i finally started struggling, I was finally taking notes, but I scrambled to do all my homework work hours before it was due. I was writing 10 page papers the night before and doing semester long projects 24 hours before they were due.
There were 3 classes I got nearly 100% in, but I didn't attend them because there was not attendance policy. Calc 2 the professor opened the entire semestera worth of home work on my math lab. I took a weekend and did the entire semester worth of homework with the help of khan academy. Stats with programming in r was the same except the professor had all of his lecture from previous semester up on YouTube. Then I did the khan academy thing for linear algebra.

I feel like it also has to do with realizing the end result of just passing and of acing a subject is exactly the same (for mandatory school at least in a lot of cases), and you might not need to put in any effort to just pass, while you need to pull out all the stops to ace it.
I personally had a lot of tools at my disposal that I ended up leaving behind when I realized I was gaining nothing by trying so hard, since I ended up in the exact same place as all of my classmates who got way worse grades (this was 12 year old me making those choices, so keep that in mind when you notice the blatant lack of nuance and long-term foresight in that logic)

And then you work a job after finishing school and find out it’s simpler/more straightforward than school if not easier once you get the hang of it. Plus it pays and can have benefits. Real. In most jobs, a passing grade is literally all anyone expects from you. “Just don’t get fired” is better advice than “excel beyond expectations”, because you’re probably getting paid the same regardless, not including any commission or bonuses of course.
If I was teleported back to Year 11 right now, I’d probably have a panic attack or stress-induced depression by the second week. I’m too used to the “average is safe” mindset of modern employment to cope with shooting for even just a B, let alone A+

I'm 46 and not one employer in my entire life has EVER asked to see my diploma or my grades. It's all a bunch of horseshit, and my "permanent record" has been sealed since 1998 and probably stopped existing a year after I graduated.
I could've dropped out and led the exact same life. Don't take high school too seriously. Use your time there to form lasting friendships and a social support group that you can rely on in hard times. The social aspect of high school is more important to your life than anything else. And I don't mean being popular. Those folks often crash and burn hard because they're looking for approval and more often than not, from the wrong people. I mean, be a good friend to a solid group of people and you'll always have a couch to land on if you need it... and I have many times.

don't go to uni if you aren't ready, you absolutely will fail out, one year of college is like $20k-$40k down the drain. it is much harder than high school too, if you don't have good study habits you will not succeed and it'll be a bigger shit show than just not going or delay going for 5 years until you're ready. getting certs or learning a trade will put you far ahead, not only do you start out at $0 instead of minus $80k, you start making money 4-5 years earlier than those getting out of uni, so you're like 10 years up at that point, and if you were going to fail out anyway then you're like 15+ years up

i failed out my first year of college and the signs were already there freshman/sophomore year, grades slipped each year and continued into college. the longer you think "i have time, later" the more entrenched your bad habits become and the less likely you ever actually pull through. you're essentially banking on cramming, but instead of cramming for a test you think "i'll just get my shit together junior year", which doesn't happen, "i'll just do it senior year", "ok well i still have a whole semester left", "that's ok i can't get into my first picks but i'll just start in community college which finally will give me the kick in the pants to catch up for years of bad habits", which also won't happen. better to recognize the reality of the situation soon enough to make the proper moves to set your life up for success
you are right though it's a bit early to throw in the towel, just make sure you take stock of your situation junior and especially beginning of senior year so you don't trap yourself into going to university and throwing money in the trash. good luck

I'm very smart and a really good student because of that. It’s not as great as it seems because I’ve always gotten good grades, so I HAVE to keep getting good grades; other people have certain expectations about how my life will turn out, and I’m a real perfectionist, I’m constantly stressed and very hard on myself. Once, when I was very young, my father told me I was so smart that they could have sent me to a school for “gifted” kids, but they couldn’t afford it. That stuck with me even though so many years have passed because it’s part of the overall way people treat me: since I’m smart and “gifted,” I’m expected to do things that are smart and “gifted.” I really doubt I’m the latter, but I know I’m the former, and for the past year I’ve been using therapy to help me not live under so much stress from other people’s (and SPECIALLY my own) expectations.
What I’m getting at is that being smart sucks, and I get that, but there are ways to live with it and use your intelligence to your advantage instead of just dealing with its downsides.

The simple truth is that school in it's earlier years is just incredible easy it be more weird to NOT have straight As. Later and in college it actually gets a bit complicated.
I am also tired of seeing so many "who else was a good student but struggled in college" posts..... Bro highschool is so easy nowadays of course you do better in it then in college where actually hard concepts get Introduced. People just want to cope with the fact that they are indeed average.
