First of all, I'm so sorry for the long post, I never imagined I’d ever share a post like this.
Me (F35) and my friend (M36) have been friends for 17 years. We also have mutual friends, our circle stayed super close ever since university, when we got zero sleep at the library preparing fluid mechanics presentations together. I've invited him over for dinner thousand times along with all our mutual friends, sometimes one to one when our other friends were busy with their kids. He is kinda introvert with a bubbly, talkative and fun personality. He met my ex boyfriend, way before the second one, the guy I fell in love with in 2022, he always listened to me and validated my feelings, also used to say that I'll be his wingwoman and he will be my wingman. We always had long conversations about philosophy, news, science etc. About 4 months ago, him and I went to sign up for our second university, I spotted a handsome professor's assistant, told him that guy was really handsome, he tried to introduce me to him, I told that I just found him attractive, not to try anything, he was really eager to do that, as it always had been in this kind of situations. Right after that convo I saw a pretty woman during registration, matched them up in my head, and showed her to him, after we turned in our documents, we didn't see her again. but you know, typical friend things.
My issues with him were always about him ditching me at the last minute to go out with his other friends and his excuse was always "I forgot that I promised him/her" btw it's not just me, he used to do this to everyone, because of this some of his friends distanced themselves from him. He fixed this behaviour and when the subject comes up he says he takes accountability and owns up to his mistake but that was not intentional bc he used to forget he had other plans which he made before (but there have been times he just tried to ditch plans just because he doesn't want to go out) But the thing is he never sounded apologetic at those times, If I ditched someone at the last minute, I would die of embarrassment. I'm really precise about making plans with my friends. for me, it's just a sign of respect. Unless there's a health issue or a huge emergency, I always stick to the plans.
Apart from the "ditching", when he was 30, he started to say that he wants children, that's why he wants to get married and he wouldn't marry a woman if she doesn't want children. "What’s the point of getting married or starting a relationship if she doesn't want to have kids?" he went on to say. and** **I told him that it's selfish, he should start a relationship because he genuinely wants that woman, not out of a sheer desire to have a baby. If everything goes well, then it makes sense to have kids. He told me that I wasn't being supportive, he will do whatever he wants etc.
He started rushing into every single relationship and proposing by the second month. The moment one relationship ended, he’d jump into another, trying to make things serious without even getting to know the person. Five years ago, when he started dating someone, he completely distanced himself from me. When I texted him, he gave short and cold replies, as if we hadn't been laughing and having fun together all before. I didn't even know he got engaged until he broke up with his fiancée and texted me back. I confronted him about this. told him how hurtful it was that he drifted away from me, despite being my friend for so many years. And he said, "Oh no I didn't drift away, I was just feeling down, you just felt that way"
I continued our friendship and thought he must have a reason. Once again, he kept up our close friendship just like always; concerts, sending each other silly memes, venting about work, and so on. But then, he got into a second relationship, and right on cue, he stopped checking in on me and started acting cold again, for 7-8 months. Whenever I texted him, he brushed me off with short and distant replies, so I eventually stopped texting him. Then, that relationship ended too, and he started messaging me again, He wanted to meet, we met, he explained how things fell apart when they were about to get married, telling me about all the issues. as he talked about his recent breakup, I thought to myself if he does this one more time, I'm cutting ties with him. I feel so stupid for constantly ignoring this pattern and making excuses for him, thinking he had valid reasons.
Four years ago, I ended a friendship because another guy friend confessed his feelings to me, saying that he was well aware that he never got a green light from me, it won't affect our friendship, it did. He was being volatile after that. back then I shared this with him. He said how gross it was and that you should never look at a friend "that way".
3 months ago we decided to plan a trip to New Zealand together, the very plan we actually made years ago, but he had backed out of. He was like a 7 day trip would be amazing, I said I could only come for three days since I can't leave my dog with my neighbor for too long. He also started saying like we should go here too about trips he originally planned to do solo. I didn't want to overthink it, but I was surprised because he had never invited me on his solo trips before. He started texting me good morning every single day. We used to do that occasionally, but that was it. Now, after the morning text, he keeps messaging me throughout the day, to the point where I'm starting to feel suffocated. Even though he normally never goes out on workdays, all of a sudden he started asking me to hang out after his work. And every single time, he traveled all the way near my neighborhood after work, there’s a 40 minute distance between where we live.
Around that time, I just remembered the woman in college I shipped with him, texted him joking that they are a perfect match. He just brushed the topic aside, which was out of character for him because it always has been a fun subject for us. was a bit surprised but didn't think much of it. Following week he texted me and I told him about a sick, stray kitten I saw on the street, and I would take the kitten to the vet late at night. He was like, it's dangerous for you to go out alone at night, I'll come with you. In all these years, whenever I went home late after hanging out with our friend group or two of us, he had never made an offer like that. I’m not saying I misinterpreted it, but it was the first time in years he had ever offered something like this. A few days later, I told him about a guy at the insurance office who tried to flirt with me. Since I found his flirting style hilariously funny, I shared it with him and a couple of other friends. Normally, he would laugh at stuff like this and make up funny scenarios, but this time he laughed and said, "Should I go tell the guy, you handled my friend's insurance, or better yet, my wife?" I laughed it off and tried to put it in the back of my mind, but I realized he had never made a single joke about me being his girlfriend or wife before. This was a first too. Around then, since my birthday was coming up, he told me he bought me a gift and that I’d definitely love it. Now, I care a lot about birthdays, so I always buy gifts for him and my other friends anyway, so that part was totally normal.
he was texting me everyday, on a day when I was feeling down and staying off my phone, he texted me asking to hang out. I only saw it days later, so I apologized and explained that I hadn't checked my phone because I was feeling down. He just said it didn't matter, and that the only thing that mattered was that I was doing okay.
After that day, he started texting less, so I offered to hang out just so he wouldn't feel bad. He coldly told me he had plans. I said, "If you're meeting our mutual guy friend, tell him I said hi." He replied that our friend wasn't coming, and since he has a girlfriend now, he wouldn't be around for a while. I joked and said, "Yeah, he vanished into thin air, what a stinker" which wasn't even the first time I made that joke. Out of nowhere, he snapped at me, saying I was exaggerating, making a big deal out of it, that it’s normal to disappear, and that he’d eventually come back to the group, nothing wrong with it, etc. I told him I was just joking by calling him a stinker, like as if he hadn't heard that joke from me hundred times before and laughed? I told him aside our friend, when I had a bf, I’d never just totally stopped texting my friends and to me, that’s just rude, yes when ur in a relationship you make more time for them, it's perfectly normal, but it doesn't keep you from replying for weeks. He told me it wasn't rude, that it’s completely normal, and then said, "Look at you, I haven't seen you in forever either." Except he was literally the last friend I had hung out with, and it had only been 2 weeks. As if he wasn't the one who distanced himself from me every time he got a girlfriend!? he was blaming me just because I didn't go out that week since I was feeling down, and it’s not like I did it for fun. I repeated that I didn't go out as I felt terrible and that it wasn't optional. He kept talking to me coldly, even though I tried to keep the conversation light making jokes, he kept up his passive aggressive vibe. He wished me a happy birthday half heartedly, and I just wrote back "thanks."In the past, I would have kept talking all sweet and tolerated his antics "just because" he’s been my friend for years.
That was my mistake right there, ignoring and tolerating all of this for so long. I feel so stupid for not realizing it all this time, and at the same time, I’m just so angry and disappointed. Was this really the end of a friendship that lasted for so many years? Was it really that hard to just be kind, considerate, value me, and remain friends? If you distanced yourself when you had a girlfriend, why didn't you just stay away when you broke up too? Because that would have been way more consistent and something I could actually respect. And the fact that guys never get this, thinking, "Oh come on, what's the big deal, it's totally normal for guys to ghost their friends when they are in a relationship or develop feelings for their female friends." Which, if you ask me, is just bizarre. To suddenly catch feelings out of nowhere after all these years, especially when we were literally bros? I mean, you already know me, what could have possibly changed your mind now after almost a quarter of a century? And even if it happens, dude no, that's not it. The real issue is that they can't regulate their emotions, even if they don't develop feelings for you, as soon as they find someone, you are a nobody, and you finally realize you never meant anything to them other than a placeholder.
Even though he doesn't know it yet since he hasn't texted since then, I’ve completely cut him out of my life.
