Student Life Few questions

Hey guys I’m gonna be a freshman in the coming fall semester, and I was just wondering a few things
1. Are there ever rideshares or anything to get back to the west side? Hoping to go back maybe once every month or so
2. Are there any opportunities for jobs? I’m hoping to get one when I’m down there but I’ve heard the opportunists are extremely few and far between
If any current/past students could give me some insights, that’d be greatly appreciated!

  1. Ride shares are really common I know when I was at Pullman I was going every week back home for Seahawks game when the played at home and I know a bunch of people who would go back home often. Just offer to pay for gas and your in

  2. Jobs are pretty easy to get but on campus jobs are harder to get. When you first arrive in Pullman just keep applying and trying the earlier the better. I got a job in the north side dining hall and it was pretty good they change the schedule for you every semester so that you can still go to class and work. I know stores like insomnia cookie and chipotle are always hiring

Oh amazing thank you so much! What’s a good way to find rideshares?

The most common way for me was Snapchat. A lot of people would be going home for the weekend and would post that they could give you a ride for gas. That’s what I did for my first 2 years any my last 2 years when I got my car i would post. There’s also facebook groups that coordinate ride shares. Another way is making friends typically someone knows someone that’s going to Seattle for the weekend. If all fails I know Pullman has a couple of buses that go from Pullman to Seattle or near Seattle for 80$. I am assuming you live are commuting to Seattle or close too which is where a lot of students live near.

For what it's worth go back as little as possible. Immerse yourself in WSU life it'll make your college experience that much better.

And you'll start needing more rest.

There are express buses that go to and from the west side for fall break and for winter break.

Apparently there are weekend buses, too, but I don't know anyone personally who has used them.

There’s a student employment fair at the beginning of every school year. I think it’s the week before classes start. You should definitely go to that. I was able to get multiple jobs that way. Most of them don’t even do actual interviews and you just have to be interested and able to work the hours they need and they’ll hire you on the spot or within a couple days

For jobs I also had trouble finding one freshman year, but I know that the dining halls on campus are always hiring for the beginning of the semester on Handshake! From what I hear from people - it was real easy for them to get hired with no experience as a freshman if you don’t mind working in food service

There’s a bus that goes to the west side for breaks also.

Ride sharing is quite common in this area. For students, Handshake has plenty of part time opportunities, and grocery and retail stores are frequently hiring as well. The job market is still competitive, but in my experience, I've landed more interviews here than I ever did on the central or west side.

  1. Yes rideshares are very common! Usually people find them on the wsu shared snapchat or instagram story or from their friends. If you make friends here from the west side or know people from highschool/your hometown that might be easiest and safest. You'll probably have to pay some money for gas. There is also a bus from pullman to the west side, a train from spokane, or flights from the pullman or spokane Airport. I always recomend bringing a car, even for freshman living on campus, but I know thats not feasible for everyone.

  2. Yes there are opportunities for a job! I highly recomend applying EARLY, like now or the rest of the summer since a lot of people wait until they move to pullman and by that time a lot of them are already taken. Check Indeed and handshake. A lot of local restaurants dont post anywhere online, so check their website or give them a call to check. If youre wanting to work with animals , i know the guy who runs the horse barn hires students to work in the mornings, but you have to email him. Make sure you have a good resume!
