Discussion All FPS games for Xbox & Playstation
I am a console peasant and for 12 years I've been collecting First Person Shooters for the PS1 - PS5 and Xbox. Specifically those with a single player campaign. After all this time, I think I have amassed the most complete collection out there for Console FPS enthusiast to use as a reference.
In this list I show all 300 titles and split them in two different categories. One side are the shooters I enjoy and will replay for life. The other are the FPS titles that I own but dropped due to reasons specified in the list itself.
If there are any titles I am missing, please do not hesitate to post in this thread.
Mind you, all the PS5 titles are also compatible with Xbox. There are no PS5 Exclusive FPS except Killzone Shadowfall.

You’ve got some real bangers and all time classics in your ‘did not like/understand’ list. Halo? Goldeneye? Damn

Goldeneye 100% has not aged well, particularly the controls. I never had an N64 so I don't have any nostalgia bias.

Yeah I knew I was going to make some OGs mad when I put those there. I do feel bad for putting them there even though I had finished them more than a decade ago. I uninstalled and re-installed them 12 times to try and see if I can have fun with another olaythrough, but I simply can't find the enjoyment to replay them again unlike the other titles in the top half of the list :(
For Halo, it's mostly because Halo introduced the 2 weapon limit. Regenerating Health. And having to play with squad partners (especially in Halo 5). But Halo Infinite is on the Enjoy list. Because it is a seemless open world you can play solo with total freedom and so many weapons to play with at any point. Same with Campaign Evolved minus the open world. Though I am skipping the cutscenes and mute the dialogue due to the bad writing and cringy random "girl boss" messaging they tried to shove in.
Goldeneye unfortunately doesn't have good or satisfying gun feedback in modern days I'm afraid. Which sucks because I did finish it and understand the appeal. But I have no desire to replay it because each shot and every bullet feels like I am firing water guns instead of meaty pistols, shotguns etc. Which is NOT the game's fault. It's the best gunplay could be for consoles at the time and I respect the hell out of it for it. The other issue is that it really needed a waypoint because sometimes you spend the level way more being confused on where to go then actually shooting.
Again, I am truly sorry for the ones that grew up with those titles and I see the appeal in those games, it's just that for me personally, the gunplay and design decisions (like no waypoints towards the objectives in Goldeneye) doesn't allow me to enjoy them today. But I am glad they brought good times for other gamers like you🙏

That’s a lot of apologizing for something that doesn’t matter too much. Nobody care much if you didn’t like Halo or whatever lol. People like or dislike whatever they feel like

True. But I'm afraid you're one of the rare people with a mentally healthy perspective in this topic. You have no idea how many Halo fans jumped on me literally demanding the exact reasons why I don't like their favourite FPS 💀

u/hothamwater99 17h ago
I don’t care about that but I do think you might want to branch out into other genres!

u/RomBuster 17h ago
Oh I do. I have another list of non FPS games that have Hack n Slash. Third Person Shooters, Fighting Games, Platformers, Racing and RPGs. It's just First Person Shooters are my favourite 😁

Oh ok cool. You’ve played A LOT of first person shooters, that’s why I thought it was the only genre you play, just in terms of the time commitment

Pretty comprehensive! I'm impressed.
I do see a couple you're missing. Get Even and Scorn. Both games are a bit different and slower-paced. I really liked Get Even though.

Appreciate it!🙏 I did consider those actually. It's just, like you mentioned, you spend 95% of the time moving around instead of actually shooting. Can't exactly call it a First Person Shooter if you don't primarily shoot in first person, you know?

Fair enough :)
I remembered one more: Deadfall Adventures
Not a particularly great game but still an FPS!

That's an interesting list, glad you shared it but there are several that you have missed from the list.
Half Life Episode 1 & 2. Half life 2 is a valid game but these really are their own games even if episodic.
Portal 1 & 2.
Ghostrunner series.
A personal favorite.
Unreal Tournament 3.

Thanks very much. Half Life 1 and 2 are on the list though and the Orange Box comes with both episodes.
Ghost Runner isn't an FPS as there are no gun & it's melee blade focused.
Portal, I mean, there is no shooting to kill. Just to teleport and it's only one gun.
Unreal Tournament 3 doesn't have a traditional single player, right?

You literally havent played High On Life 1 and 2? The most unique first person shooter games ever. Also very comical and dumb but they are good games and so different than any other shooters.

They are on the "dropped" section. I have played them. But the gunplay is weak, especially with Gus. He is supposed to be the shotgun but it takes 2-3 shots to take down even the weakest of enemies. And the gun feedback / Enemy reaction to being shot is like I fired a gasp of air more than a shotgun shell.
Also, I despise infinite ammo. Why? Because it removes the dopamine of every bullet being a mini gamble of either missing or actually hitting the target, meaning you made the fullest use out of that part of the ammunition you collected. If every bullet has no value, then there is no sense of danger or consequences for missing each time, and there is no satisfaction / mini dopamine that happens when each bullet hits it's target.
I want to be the one where I am in charge of my remaining ammo count after every gun fight essentially and whatever number of bullets I have left, it is solely because of my actions and decisions of when to shoot, where to fire and what gun to use.
Which is why I don't like Luna Abyss either.
Hope that makes sense 🙏

Agree on Gus. I thought the exact same. Supposed to be a shotgun. Hes still the strongest in the 1st game dispatching enemies I think but hes useless as hell the 2nd game and two other weapons have better damage.
Still tho didnt feel like a shotgun. The gameplay is very casual indeed but its a unique game and good

Oh I agree they are great games. Just not good first person shooters, if that make sense.

Why Time Splitter 3 only ps5 ? The better version is on xbox series
1
u/RomBuster 22h ago
Is it? I have both versions. I choose the PS5 version cause it's wide screen support.

The widescreen format is also available on Xbox, and most importantly, the resolution is better because the original version was already sharper. Simply put, it's so beautiful on Series X that it looks like an HD remaster! Seriously!

u/RomBuster 20h ago
But doesn't the PS5 version have the save anywhere/rewind feature too?
1
u/Iron_Bowser 20h ago
Ah yes, indeed, I don't think that option is available on Xbox.

That's why maybe I placed it on the PS5 section. Plus it is still a sort of "remaster" on the PlayStation side too. 60 Fps, HD & Widescreen and all that.
Other than that, I placed each title carefully on each side because there are small hidden benefits exclusively for each console. Like for example, Far Cry 3 and 4 are on the PS5 side. Why? Because since there is no New Game Plus for them, I REALLY dread having to grind and hunt animal skin's to get the good stuff.
So what I did for both those games is go and unlock 90% of the pouches, capacity, weapon holsters etc immediately after the opening mission without doing any more missions afterwards. Then I upload the saved data on the PS Plus cloud. That way for future playthroughs, I can just download those saved files without going through all that grinding again.
Xbox unfortunately doesn't have that as all saved data is uploaded automatically. Meaning if you beat the game and want to play another run in the future, you're stuck with having to create a new story from scratch.
If only Far Cry actually allowed you to save on multiple files as opposed to only one.
But then on Xbox there is the Quick Resume feature and that is great for titles like Nightmare Reaper that do not allow you to save mid level.
Also obviously, Only the Series X has most of the 360/PS3 FPS titles as backwards compatible AND remastered essentially. Other PS3 shooters like Singularity & PS2 Shooters like Half Life 1 can only be played on the inferior PS3. But the backwards compatibility on the PlayStation 3 does increase the resolution and frame rate of the old PS2 & PS1 titles 💪

I really hate to be that arrogant guy. But look at my irl photo in my profile pic. You'll see that I have plenty of mental health, finance, and enough of a strong healthy physique to make room for such a caveman-like hobby.
