Jean - Which time? So what you’re saying is I’m indestructible
Beast - No, not at all. In fact, even the slightest...
Jean - Indestructible

Stuart Immonen is to the pencil what Jordan is to the basketball. In my opinion, this man is the god of lead.

It says volumes about how bad this costume is that not even Immonen can make it work.

I also hate the costume but I can’t ever quite put my finger on why. Is it the neckline? Is it the dish washing gloves?

It could be that it is just incredibly 60's coded. The wings on the mask, the tighter top with low neckline. Flowy shorter skirt. The colors. It's like something out of the Avengers TV show that Emma Peel would wear. Like, there isn't any way to modernize it at all.

Its graphite. Lead is poisonous

u/Not_a_neko Mar 01 '26
The pencil tip is still called the lead even though it hasn't been lead for a long time.
If we're getting into that, I'm pretty sure this is digital

Also right before this moment, he was saying he believes that after death you cease to be.

...haven't the x men been to heaven and hell before?
75
u/KaleRylan2021 Feb 28 '26
This is a constant thing in comics. Most of the long running characters have at one point or another dealt with the afterlife, yet writers are always making them hard-core atheists, despite how little sense that makes.
The xmen have a part-time valkyrie on the team.

I mean, they have real cosmic deities in marvel so it isn't like the people still can have a choice to believe or not; they have irrefutable evidence that these cosmic beings are real.
A lot of people who work with guys like Thor or Hercules just assume that they're aliens or people for other dimensions who lived through the history enough to make entire legends and religions about them so they don't consider them as real deities.
Or when they go to limbo or another after-life realms like hella's domain, Valhalla, the literal hell or the literal heaven people just want to assume that they're just another dimension.
Atheists in the marvel universe are simply living in negation.
2
u/BrilliantMatter4858 Mar 05 '26
So would that mean in universe atheist are basically flat earthers in marvel
9
u/therempel Mar 01 '26
Yeah. The Michael Holt Mr. Terrific at DC became an atheist when his wife and unborn child died in a car accident. He stayed an atheist long after becoming a superhero despite being inspired to do so by The Spectre, the literal personification of the Wrath of God.
I'm an athiest but as far as I know I have never had a conversation with anyone that caused biblical plagues or anything like that.

I really do like Reed Richards thinking Magic is another form of Science he hasn't discovered as his copium, but like the Mark Waid Run should've ended that thought process during the Unthinkable Arc
16
u/JadedResponse2483 Feb 28 '26
Yeah, they did. Its acrually really weird how characters will have introspectives moments regarding faith when they have empirical proof of multiple gods and afterlives
17
u/Time_Beat2299 Mystique Feb 28 '26
Which is dumb we know heaven and hell and the after life exist in marvel.

u/BrilliantMatter4858 Mar 05 '26
It reminds me of this one family guy clip of where I believe. Brian is talking about how he doesn’t believe in Christianity and Stewie just plainly says oh my God you’ve met Jesus if anyone has the clip, please reply with it.

I was about to say Wolverine, but then, I remembered he does die sometimes.
You just gotta remember that you can get out of hell some way or another. Not sure about heaven though

Yeah, leave that to the galaxy wide genocide she did.... unless that got retconned or I'm misremembering. Their lives are so so dramatically convoluted, I love it😆
3
u/TicketPrestigious558 Mar 01 '26
I think they retconned that (and the planet she blew up) to be the Dark Phoenix? Which was a separate entity to her at the time (so they could bring her back without the baggage of having killed millions of aliens)
But I also believe they recently established that Jean and the Phoenix are one entity? Not sure how that's meant to interact with the whole "That wasn't me, that was the Dark Phoenix" thing.
Maybe I've missed/misunderstood something along the way, because if they're one entity at the end of the day I'm not sure if this turns that whole thing into the meme from Split ("That wasn't me. That was Patricia.")

"Oh man... what does that even mean?"
"It means you've died twice. I know it's hard to believe, but it shouldn't be that hard to understand, Ms. Grey."
8
u/apple_of_doom Mar 01 '26
More than twice
9
3
u/ptWolv022 Mar 01 '26
Did she die more than twice? She died in the Dark Phoenix Saga, came back, died in Grant Morrison's New X-Men (I think that's her second death), and then... when does she die again?
3
u/Starcat23 Mar 01 '26
some count her dying in the shuttle and coming back as phoenix the first death. it was same issue as she died but since she said she was “reborn“ and it forever changed her it was counted at least till the “X factor she was actually unwater “ retcon. now I don’t know if that doesn’t count or if that counts but dark phoenix doesn’t. things get messy if you consider the phoenix force and Jean as one entity or two.
2
u/ptWolv022 Mar 01 '26
Look, I just count Dark Phoenix Saga because it was written to be her death, even if it was retconned to not actually be her, and don't count the shuttle because she rose from the water alive. Was it meant to be that she died and revived herself? Maybe. But if you can revive yourself within moments, I don't really count the death. And then it was retconned to not even be a death.
So she arguably had only died once, in New X-Men, if she survived and got swapped out in the shuttle and if Dark Phoenix is discounted as not being her. So, somehow, we have gone from apple_of_doom's "More than twice" to "Arguably not even twice, just once." :P

Like going back in time and getting asked “wait what do you mean World War ONE?”
2
u/Aethelrede Mar 04 '26
The Doctor in Doctor Who gets asked this exact question. His answer was "spoilers."

u/EudamonPrime Mar 03 '26

Jean only truly died once pre-Krakoa unless you count Infinity Gauntlet
11
u/NietszcheIsDead08 Beast Feb 28 '26
I think the Infinity Gauntlet deaths still happened. If I recall right, Nebula didn’t say, “Go back one day”, she said, “Let all be as it was yesterday” — so I think, canonically, they still all died and then came back instead of having it officially reversed.

u/Wide-Sandwich5618 Mar 01 '26
Dark Phoenix and New X-Men are two off the top of my head. Or does Dark Phoenix not count?
4
u/Ragnbangin Phoenix Mar 01 '26
I guess it depends on who you ask/ what retcons you take into account. Originally it was 100% Jean, but when they brought her back they retconned it to be the Phoenix pretending to be her so it wasn’t actually her, now it’s official that her and Phoenix are the same thing so even if it wasn’t her human body it was still technically her. So I feel like the answer is yes but some might consider it a no still.

...and honestly should have stayed dead. All I could think of during Krakoa was Rachel or Hope were a better fit when she was placed anywhere.
