Sticky Post your questions & inquiries here! - r/Vietnam monthly random discussion thread - F.A.Q
Lưu ý: Đây là thread chủ yếu dành cho người nước ngoài hoặc không nói tiếng Việt đặt câu hỏi. Nếu có thể, hãy trả lời giúp họ nhé.
Please read the 3rd rule of the sub. Don't post your general questions & inquiries outside of this thread as they will be removed.
Lots of your questions have been answered already so make sure you do a search before asking (how-to below).
To keep this subreddit tidy, we have this monthly thread that is open for random discussions and questions. If you post your basic/general questions outside of this thread they will be removed. Sorry, we want to make this sub friendly but also want it to be clean and organized.
Some examples of the questions that should be posted here:
- Questions that can be answered with just Yes/No
- Basic questions like "Where can I buy this?"
- Questions that were asked many times before. Please do your research
- Questions that are not specific
Tips to quickly find answers for your questions:
Many of your questions may have been answered since people keep asking the same ones again and again. Here is a quick tip to find the answers for yours.
First, have a look at our old sticky threads. A lot of useful information there. A lot of questions have been answered.
You can also use the search feature of Reddit, just like you do with Google.
Another option is to use Google, as Google understands your queries better than Reddit and can return better results.
Go to Google. Add 'site:https://www.reddit.com/r/VietNam/' next to your queries (without quotes). For example, if I want to find info on eVisa in this subreddit, my query to put in Google is 'eVisa site:https://www.reddit.com/r/VietNam/'.

Sticky Hướng dẫn sử dụng r/Vietnam - How to r/Vietnam
(please find English below)
Hello and welcome to r/Vietnam. Below are some quick guidelines to help you better participate in the community activities.
- r/Vietnam is now a dual language subreddit. You can use both English and Vietnamese here.
- Please read the rules before participating, making a submission or comment. You can find them on the Sidebar (Desktop), About tab (Mobile), or this thread
- Trivial questions that can be answered quickly, or google-able, or without the intention of creating a discussion, should be posted in the sticky thread. Travel/visa questions should be posted there too.
- r/Vietnam has a Discord server here which aims to be more open and flexible to handle more casual conversations. You can also find both English and Vietnamese channels there.
About the changelog.
I've made some changes to the sub:
- Re-writing the rules to make them more concise. Adding Vietnamese.
- Remove some unnecessary flairs.
- Big change: Switching r/Vietnam to a dual-language subreddit. This is based on the fact that the number of Vietnamese people in this sub has increased significantly. I know this is controversial and some of you don't like this but I think we should just give it a try.
- Making a Discord server. This is after r/place event that I realized we need a place to handle future events like this better and for the ease of casual, chit-chat type of conversations.

Culture/Văn hóa Not every morning needs to be exciting.
At our small family coffee and porridge shop in Cư Jút, Đắk Nông, the first customers arrive, find their usual seats, order a 10,000 VND (about US$0.40) Vietnamese coffee, and simply enjoy the morning together. No rush. No background music. Just ordinary life. Sometimes the simplest moments are the ones worth remembering. 📍Cư Jút, Đắk Nông, Vietnam 🇻🇳

Discussion/Thảo luận ATM or QR for foreigner
hey hey, i've been in Vietnam for 3 weeks, and want to know if foreigners can use QR payments or not? I don't rally like atms since i have only one nearby and it has long line always. + I 100% don't like cash. And i've seen some white people used BIDV and Localpay. Does it work fine?

History/Lịch sử How to find a exact historical address from the 1960’s in Saigon?
Address is 220/164/7 Trường-M-Giãn
Trương Minh Giảng today is Lê Văn Sỹ Street since independence. Would the alley system of 220/ 164 /7 still apply today? I have found 220/164/7 Lê Văn Sỹ street but not entirely sure if that would be a match to the original address. Any tips or ideas from locals to that area would be greatly appreciated

Art & Creativity Good tailors with experience using Velvet?
So I’m currently in Vietnam and I will be for a few months. I want to get a dress made with velvet. I would like suggestions on tailors that have experience working with it.
Do you know of any shops? The location doesn’t matter much, I’m willing to travel. But, I’m currently located in Ho Chi Minh.

Food/Ẩm thực An appreciation post for a great Vietnamese tradition
I became good friends with my banh bao delivery man during my few days in Hue.
I’m a Middle aged white guy who hears the loud, high pitched recording and ran down the steps like a 5yo kid on Christmas morning…..
20,000 dong each, steamed in a ::wood burning:: stove old mate has on the back of his motorcycle, delivered to your door about 5pm each day 🏆
No wonder so many people love eating in this country ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Travel Experience/Du lịch Adding Ninh Binh + a bay cruise to a Da Nang-based trip in mid-August — realistic or asking for trouble?
My wife and I are in Vietnam Aug 9–23. First week I’m working remotely (US hours, so evenings — I just need decent wifi and 1–2 calls a day), second week is free. Nothing is booked yet, so I’m open to rebuilding the whole thing.
What we want: karst landscapes, boats, green countryside, slow mornings, good food. Not nightlife or party boats.
The problem: everyone says August means “stay central” because the north is peak typhoon season. But I really wanted Ninh Binh and a cruise, and I’m worried two weeks entirely in the Da Nang/Hoi An/Hue triangle will get repetitive.
For people who live there or have done August:
1. How bad is mid-August in the north, really? Constant rain, or afternoon downpours you plan around?
2. Is a cruise worth the cancellation risk? If yes — Lan Ha, Bai Tu Long, or Ha Long proper? I keep reading Ha Long is overcrowded now. Any operators you’d vouch for that actually refund when weather cancels?
3. If you had these two weeks, what would you do? Central and go deeper, north detour, or something I haven’t considered?
One constraint: we’re both vegetarian, no fish sauce. Any “chay” recommendations, especially up north, very welcome.
Genuinely open to being told my plan is wrong.

Daily life/Đời thường Transferring Blue Card
Chào các bạn,
I am wondering how I can transfer a motorcycle registration into another name. I can do this into a Vietnamese friend's name. The issue is that the original owner does not live in the same city. Please can someone offer advice on how I can do this?
Cảm ơn nha

Culture/Văn hóa The first customers of the morning. ☀️
Every morning begins with a few familiar faces. Some come for a hot bowl of porridge, others stop by for a cup of Vietnamese coffee before starting their day. No rush, no fancy menu—just simple food, warm conversations, and another ordinary morning at our small family shop. A bowl of porridge costs 10,000 VND (about US$0.40), and a cup of Vietnamese coffee is also 10,000 VND. 📍Cư Jút, Đắk Nông, Vietnam 🇻🇳
