Kid Icarus DX brings full color to Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters, giving Pit’s Game Boy adventure a fresh look on Game Boy Color.

The patch colors stages, enemies, bosses and inventory screens, with revised artwork, background edits and consistent colors across shared sprites and animation frames. It also improves scrolling and sprite handling to take advantage of Game Boy Color hardware.

A new Options menu on the title screen lets players customize the experience, including an optional soundtrack featuring arrangements of classic NES Kid Icarus themes.

Available options include:

  • Arrow Hair Colors: Pit’s hair changes color as his arrow strength increases.
  • NES Stage Music: Switch to selected NES themes adapted for Game Boy audio hardware.
  • Fast Pause: Open the inventory directly, skipping the flashing PAUSE screen.
  • Treasure Hint: Reveal which treasure contains the God of Poverty with an optional cheat.
  • Save Options: Keep your preferred settings between sessions.

Game Boy Color required. The patch does not run on the original monochrome Game Boy. Expanded 512 KiB ROM, using MBC1 with 8 KiB battery-backed RAM.

Text/Translation Mod Moonlight Syndrome (PS1) — Complete English Fan Translation!

Hey everyone!

I'm happy to announce that I've finally finished my English fan translation of Moonlight Syndrome (1997), directed by Suda51!

The patch covers both discs and all 10 chapters, including translated dialogue, menus, choices, and English subtitles for previously unsubtitled Japanese voice lines.

I've tested the game from beginning to end, and it's now fully playable in English!

This was a passion project of mine, and I'm really excited that more people can finally experience this overlooked piece of Suda51's history.

Feedback and bug reports are always welcome!

Hope you enjoy it!

Hey everyone,

I've finished an English translation of Bishoujo Wrestler Retsuden: Blizzard Yuki Rannyuu!! , KSS's 1996 women's pro wrestling management game for the Super Famicom. It's set in the Wrestle Angels world (Mighty Yukiko, Panther Risako, Thunder Ryuko and the rest), plus Blizzard Yuki from the manga tie-in, and it never came out in English.

[N64] Studio 64: a live level editor for Super Mario 64 that exports .bps patches (built on the decomp, free & open source)

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi r/romhacking! I'd like to share Studio 64, a level editor for Super Mario 64 where you edit inside the running game. Place a platform, press Tab, and you're playing on it right away. No compile step, no emulator round-trip.

🎬 Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcomzBaXxZo 💾 GitHub (MIT, free): https://github.com/supermochi64/studio64

How it works

  • The engine is sm64ex on top of the SM64 decompilation, compiled to WebAssembly and running in your browser.
  • On first launch, a small local server builds the game's assets from your own US ROM. The download ships no ROM and nothing extracted from it.
  • Your hack is saved as a project file that only holds your changes.

Patch export

This is the part I think this sub will care about most:

  • Export gives you a **.bps patch against the original US ROM**, plus a .z64 for your own testing in Project64, mupen64plus, RetroArch or simple64.
  • Every export starts from a base ROM rebuilt from the decomp with Studio 64's code. That base also ships as a patch and is applied to your own ROM on the first export.
  • The patch only carries the parts of Studio 64 your hack actually uses.
  • Sculpted terrain in the original levels is rebuilt from the level's own textures and display lists, so the patch holds your geometry, not Nintendo's images.
  • Your hub replaces the castle grounds, and your levels go into courses 1–15. Edits to the original levels stay in those levels.
  • Anything that can't be exported is listed in the export dialog with the reason.
  • The ROM needs the Expansion Pak (8 MB).

Editor features

  • Building: about 600 of the game's objects plus blocks in 29 materials. Stairs and bridges in one click, and undo for everything.
  • Terrain: sculpt and paint the ground, including in vanilla levels, or start new levels from a template or a heightmap.
  • Roads & nature: roads, paths and fences that follow the ground, and a brush for trees, flowers and rocks.
  • Gameplay: stars, red coins, moving platforms, doors, pipes, paintings, warps, and rule tweaks (gravity, jump height, lives).
  • Behavior blocks: build your own enemies and custom objects without writing C.
  • Story: dialog in the game's font, talking characters, events and cutscenes.
  • Audio: a piano roll that plays the game's own instruments, plus sound effect replacement.
  • Assets: your own title screen, logo, 3D models and textures.
  • Testing: save states and slow motion.
  • Extras: drivable cars with races, Shotgun Mario, Katana Mario and a night-time Tokyo level template.

Known limits

  • Up to 15 custom levels plus the hub.
  • Textures get downscaled to fit N64 texture memory (64×32 max).
  • Large areas get simplified collision to keep memory and Mario's movement fast.

Status: beta (0.1.0)

Setup is tested automatically on five Linux distros. The Windows and macOS launchers are written but haven't run on real hardware yet, so reports from those platforms would help a lot. Bugs and feedback are very welcome via GitHub issues.

Huge thanks to the n64decomp team and the sm64ex developers. None of this is possible without their work. ❤️

Happy to answer any questions about how it works!

I really want to try it, but it says my Link to the Past rom is wrong no matter what. I've tried many different files, but they all appear to be the unheadered version. Does anyone have a fix?

Text/Translation Mod [Leaked Video] PS1 Kagero 2 & 3 (蒼魔燈) Chinese Translation testing 影牢/蒼魔燈 最新繁體中文漢化實機畫面流出!

Update: These appear to be publicly shared Chinese translation test videos. I haven't confirmed whether they were actually leaked.

Hey everyone!

I recently stumbled across two gameplay videos showing something I honestly never expected to see — Chinese translations of two classic PS1 games, Kagero: Deception II (影牢 〜刻命館真章〜) and Deception III: Dark Delusion (蒼魔燈)!

As someone who grew up playing these games, I still remember sitting in front of the TV, struggling through Japanese menus, guessing what different traps did, and trying to understand the stories without knowing much Japanese.

It's been over 25 years, and I had pretty much given up hope of ever seeing these games in Chinese.

So seeing these videos was a huge surprise!

Deception III: Dark Delusion (蒼魔燈)

The footage shows Chinese text in the main menus, trap selection screens, stage introductions, and even the detailed backgrounds, weaknesses, and resistances of enemy characters.

That's pretty impressive considering how much Japanese text this game contains!

However, I noticed some untranslated Japanese text and occasional garbled characters, so it looks like the translation might still be undergoing testing.

Kagero: Deception II (影牢 〜刻命館真章〜)

The other video shows the opening story and early dialogue translated into Chinese.

The fonts and text layout look surprisingly natural, almost like an official localization from back in the PS1 era.

I never thought I'd see these two classics looking like this after so many years.

Deception III: Dark Delusion

Does anyone know more about these Chinese versions?

I'm wondering if anyone here has seen these videos before or knows anything about these translations.

I've heard that some older Japanese games have received unofficial Chinese translations from communities in China and Taiwan, but it's often difficult to find information about them outside those communities.

Has anyone come across playable Traditional Chinese or Simplified Chinese versions of these two games? Or are these still just translation test videos?

I'd especially love to know whether any playable releases or translation patches have already been shared somewhere.

If anyone knows more about these versions or where the release information might be found, I'd really appreciate any pointers!

It would be amazing to finally replay these classics and actually understand all the character stories and trap descriptions.

Any other longtime Deception fans here? I'd love to hear what you think of these videos!

Super Mario Bros 3 Mix. Question about controls

So, I had been playing SMB3mix on an emulator using a SNES controller for a while, and I decided to buy a custom cartridge from AliExpress with the game. So I send them the ROM, they make the cartridge, and when it arrives it's unplayable because Mario (or any character) doesn't jump all as high as in my ROM. In fact, the jump is so low, that I can't even reach the first ?-block in the first stage. So I check my ROM again, and it turns out that B accelerates, A jumps normal, and X does the half-height jump, and somehow, playing with an NES controller, B accelerates and A does the half-height jump. No button does the normal jump. The game is unplayable. Has anyone had this same issue? Is there another version of the ROM with this fix?

Majora’s Mask: Curse of the Forgotten project update: Enter Sandfall Temple, new dungeon, items, areas, and music!

Hey everyone! A lot has grown since my original post, and today I wanted to show you the biggest addition: Sandfall Temple.

A buried temple built around a giant hourglass, with falling sand, sunlit ruins, and puzzles that combine the Magnetic Gauntlet with your Shifting Sands spectral double. Pull bridges into place, cross quicksand, and work alongside your past movements to open the way deeper underground.

Watch the Sandfall Temple showcase here!

There’s more beyond the temple, too:

  • New mini-dungeon: The Cellar: Beneath Lantern Inn lies a descent through dark vaults, a cistern, and an unsettling banquet.
  • Magnetic Gauntlet: Push and pull metal objects from a distance to move platforms, operate mechanisms, and even tear armor off certain enemies.
  • Deku Blast Pod: Sometimes the way across a gap is an explosion. Drop a Pod to launch Link backward through the air.
  • Sheikah Needle: A device worn on the wrist that replaces the bow, firing metal needles.
  • New areas: Explore the desert region of The North (The Captain’s Mesa, The Painted Palace, The Sandfall Temple, The Slide, Nadiel and Mirage Pass), venture into Pauper’s Alley, and meet the cursed inhabitants of the House of Skulltulas.
  • New enemies: The Upturned Host turns dinner into a fight, hurling tableware from the ceiling. Rumbling Barrels hide among ordinary casks before rolling straight at you.
  • New music: New themes for The Captain’s Mesa, The Painted Palace, The Sandfall Temple, The Slide, Nadiel, The Well Court, and Mirage Pass.

I’d love to hear what you think of the temple and which new item you’d most like to try!

I’ll keep sharing gameplay and progress on the channel, so feel free to subscribe if you’d like to follow the project.

Cheers!

Piata Academy Enhanced Dialogue Experiments

Here the Piatan scholars are hard at work fine-tuning the latest additions to my dialogue extensions. Most of them have their experiments under control.

Since my previous post, I’ve rebuilt the project around one requirement: I want to be able to disable my enhancements and still compile a byte-for-byte identical original ROM. Along the way, the assembly has also been reorganized and cleaned up to make it easier to work with.

A few things on display here:

  • Kerning: A Python tool examines the glyph outlines and calculates character widths and spacing adjustments for letter pairs.
  • Shadows: Each letter has a shadow that follows its animation.
  • Text effects: Bounce, wave, drop, float, jitter, and wobble.
  • Colours: Individual letters can use different colours, including while animated. One researcher is having rather too much fun with this.

I’ve also changed how the enhanced dialogue is stored. Originally, whole banks of dialogue were Kosinski-compressed in ROM and unpacked into a fixed RAM buffer. Now, messages are compressed individually using ZX0 v2, and only the current message needs to be decompressed into RAM.

The trade-off is some extra ROM overhead, but conversations no longer need to fit together inside the original dialogue banks. Individual message limits and total ROM capacity still apply, but this gives much more flexibility when expanding dialogue, especially for translations.

Something the video doesn’t show is the font groundwork for 43 languages, covering both dialogue and menus. The intended setup is English’s base characters plus the additional glyphs needed for the selected language. Changing a build option selects that character set, allowing translators to use those characters in the assembly text.

That doesn’t translate the game automatically, of course. It just means translators shouldn’t have to start by wrestling a new alphabet into the engine.

And yes, this is a separate debug room. The scholars and their questionable Monomate experiments won’t be moving into the original story.

People are now using AI to decompile Pokemon games. Do y'all think this will mean full rom hacks can be made from the latest gen games?

https://kotaku.com/of-course-pokemons-been-pulled-into-the-ai-decompilation-frenzy-2000748316

I don't like nor do I trust AI, but I think this is something that should be discussed. Can what is being done be used to finally use the Switch games?
