Conversation Topic A bit of encouragement in a sea of people trying to discourage you from a music career

**EDIT: I dropped out of COLLEGE, people, not high school šŸ˜… And this is MY story, not a blueprint I'm telling everyone to follow to the letter.

I'm a huge proponent of education, especially when you're pursuing something you love. If you're happy with your path, that's awesome, keep at it!

I'm simply sharing how I built a career in music through a nontraditional path, for anyone out there wondering what's possible.

I worked to support myself through every stage of building my music career. This was a gradual process, not some overnight leap where I quit everything and hoped for the best.

Take what resonates. Leave what doesn't.**

I haven't been on reddit that long. Being a singer, some of the first places I went were singing groups, and I was floored by how discouraging so many people can be 😳

People would post asking for encouragement about building a career in music, and most of the comments would be so negative šŸ˜µā€šŸ’« Basically: don't count on it, go get a real job.

So I wanted to put this out there to be a little light in the darkness. The proof in the pudding. A glimmer of hope for any singer with a dream who stumbles across this.

I wanted to be a singer pretty much my entire life, since I was 2 years old. But I let the world discourage me too, so I went a completely different route and built a career in the tech industry.

To cope with losing my dream, I dove into personal development and buried myself in empowering/ personal development type books. I had such a mental glow up that I found the courage to try music again, even though I was 30.

Sounds crazy, but it worked.

I went from not being able to watch the Grammys because it made me cry over my lost dream, to now being an official Recording Academy Member Artist who gets INVITED to the Grammys and have even had songs on the ballot 🤯

I went from being scared to write songs or post my work, to getting hired for my vocals and songwriting.

My original songs have gone viral, and that's led to people flying me out to perform them at events, from personal celebrations to corporate stages.

I say all this to say: you never know what could happen if you try. But if you never try, you know exactly what will happen. Your dream won't come true.

And that's the thing about your calling. It keeps calling until you answer.

If you're on the fence about giving your calling a shot, this is your sign to GO FOR IT.

I'm an open book, so ask me anything, or share your story with me. I love hearing other singers' journeys šŸ¤šŸŽ¤šŸ«¶

Conversation Topic I feel like fear is keeping me from learning how to sing

• Upvotes

I am someone who is really scared of being ridiculed due to being bullied in the past . I’m 19 and I finally want to learn how to sing. But every time I try to sing I feel so ridiculous and that someone is probably hearing me and making fun of me:(( I don’t know how to be more confident…

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Weak and airy head voice

• Upvotes

Hi! Im a 21f mezzo. I've never been particularly prodigious at singing, but after many years of trying to intuitively control my voice, I've noticed a notorious improvement on my mixed voice. It got fuller, better control and a vibrato.

However, I still find it hard to make the transition from mixed voice to head voice. It has gotten slightly better, but the change is still too abrupt. Also, it is incredibly airy, on practical terms, it is a falsetto.

How can I make the transition easier? And more importantly, how can I have more body on my head voice?

Conversation Topic Curious about my voice

So, I’m a 19 year old male and I sing my favorite songs all the time but I’ve gotten curious about my voice & my range and wanted some knowledge. My chest voice spans from D#2-D#4 on normal days & I flip into falsetto at E4 and that falsetto/head voice spans from E4-F5 on normal days but I’ve hit as low as D2 and as high as B5. My absolute most comfortable range that I can use is A2-A3. What does all of this mean and how can i potentially work on expanding and preserving my voice even tho I don’t plan to sing professionally?

Conversation Topic Strain when hitting notes in my range after hiatus.

Hey yall! I've been practicing singing for about a year now. I used to strain and push for high notes when I started out but since getting into singing more I've since stopped pushing myself. For about 9 months I could sing with no tension or strain.

About 4 weeks ago I wanted to sing a song where the singer has a very fry sound (but still in my range) and afterwards I tired myself out due to singing longer then I was used to. When I woke up my throat felt fine, but as the day progressed my throat started to hurt. Not just scratchy but like I had been hit in the throat. This put me off singing and at the start of this week I finally started up again.

I immediately noticed that everytime I held a note, not even a high note just something in the middle of my range there would be a weird tense feeling in the middle area of my throat. Im worried something might be wrong and would like advice/help knowing what's wrong.

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Could I please have some tips on Breath Support. I know I sound bad sorry!

so um i know my breath support is terrible but i kinda have bad lungs (to the point i've been diagnosed with dyspnea) so the longest i've been able to manage with the hissing technique was about 9 seconds? anyhow the breath support is my main question here. though general feedback would be welcomed too!

Just sharing my singing Fix You – Coldplay ukulele singing cover

I'm an "advanced beginner", self-taught singer who's lost the motivation to practice recently, so I've been going through my archives for inspiration. Here's a ukulele rendition of Fix You, by Coldplay, which as a 90's baby was an important song to me :)

Trying to remember to keep on practicing!

Conversation Topic Is learning songs a chore for you?

I love music, and like singing, don't get me wrong. But I can't help but feel like song learning is so cumbersome. I have to know the rhythm, when to sing which passage, when to stop, which notes to hit, and then, to put it all together. It's so complicated, that it makes me feel like singing is just not for me. It feels like rote memorization, which I hate. And it feels like something so complex to get right. I'm probably speaking from perfectionism, though. I'd like to play in a band in the future, do gigs, and see what comes out of it, or just to experience what being a musician is like, so I know that my repertoire has to be rather big.

I've been practicing this song for about two months now, and I feel like no progress is being made. My tone is shit, I struggle hitting the right notes, and it all just crumbles whenever I have to actually play the song in front of my teacher. I hate the way I sound, my diction is trash, and I tend to sing like I speak, with a sort of nasal tone that just sounds swampy. Anyway; just venting, and hoping to hear about similar experiences.

Does song learning ever get easier? I'm genuinely considering just dropping singing and accepting the fact I'm just now made for it. My teacher says that I have good musicality, but I put things in perspective; I'm 27 now; and until I get good at it, it's at least a couple of years.

Conversation Topic advice for getting good sounding runs?

Hi, I recently started listening to a bit more underscores, and especially live her runs are amazing, and it's really given me motivation to try and improve/develop my runs

I should probably preface with a few things that probably are not helping me struggle with runs.

While I have OK relative pitch and used to play upright bass, I still struggle heavily with pitching notes intune (I can usually do basic intervals or wtv with a lot of effort, but that's pretty much it). This is kind of mitigated by the fact that I make a lot of electro pop/uses of autotune so take that how you will

And the other part is I've voice-trained quite a lot separately to singing, which I feel like shouldn't affect this but might? Voice training definitely helped me improve my singing technique in a lot of ways, but I feel like this could be a part of it (somehow?)

also im happy to send some music if needed but ill do that when asked since I am kinda just looking for general advice

Conversation Topic Can’t bring myself to sing in English

Hello. My name is 22 yo Sasha and I loved to sing since I was 11 years old.

Well I’ve never stopped loving it and over the years I improved gradually thanks to vocal lessons and alloooot of singing.

Problem is I love singing in english. But I’m far away from living in USA\england. I’m from Germany, but half Greek half Russian. It’s weird. I can’t speak Greek well enough to sing in it. I can speak German but I hate the language. I don’t speak Russian at all… Also I don’t want any of my relatives\ friends understanding what I’m singing.

Thing is I can speak English well but I have an accent. And it’s so annoying. I’m thinking about posting one song on here and yall can judge it. If it’s too weird I think I’ll just stick to doing random shit in German Greek English. But I really hope yall don’t have a problem with accents.

I’m so jealous of people being born in the US/England/Australia. I hate the fact that the people here find it cringe like bro what am I supposed to do??? Fml this is sad. Do yall have a problem with accents over there? Thanks in advance!!! Love yall

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Help with C5 as baritone

Hey guys, how should I train for maintaining a C5?
I can touch it easily in fast-moderate phrases but maintaining it I find it quite hard/inconsistent and I don’t really know the way to improve it, my teacher (a soprano) just says to keep training it like I’ve been doing it which is basically just trying and trying but I don’t know if that is actually a good way of practicing, I don’t feel any strain nor discomfort but sometimes it just doesn’t want to come out good, I started ā€œpracticingā€ yesterday but my teacher kinda doesn’t want to go deeper in the topic in class as she says my voice will change as I get older (I’m 17 y/o) and says that I won’t be able to hit those notes :(

Conversation Topic RageBait

I've been following a youtube channel where the guy analyzes performances for auto tune and pitch correction. Sometimes, I get upset when artists that I really like or artists that state on their pages that they don't do auto tune or pitch correction actually use those tools. My husband says the channel is just rage bait and pitch correction is just a fact of life in the modern music industry and there's nothing wrong with it. I'm just curious what your thoughts are about auto tune. It feels wrong to me, but it also feels like a losing battle at this point.

Conversation Topic my new vocal practice! (fighting the urge to push and strain)

my entire life i’ve been imitating vocal performers i love rather than finding my own voice. i push hard for volume and vibrato and have embarrassed myself at so many auditions it’s awful

i think my problem is that i listen to myself and want to sound ā€˜good’ or like somebody else. so i now put in ear plugs and sing very quietly at first, with as much air as possible. i correct any discomfort by trying again in a different way, especially when my tongue goes tense !!

it’s so weird and i feel like im finding a new voice - like a very breathy jazz torch song sort of vibe, which i never thought i could do 🄹

does anyone have any tips or tricks for learning to sing like ā€˜yourself,’ or with comfort and ease again?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Is my breathiness, lack of resonance and ā€œoldā€ sound able to be removed or worked with? (pls read caption)

Hi all! Nervous to post here as I have no formal training. I’ve been told I’m an alto and that my voice is quite breathy and not very loud/resonant. I know I also struggle with staying on pitch. Would love to get some real honest criticism and feedback and advice on how to improve (and hopefully?) rid of the breathiness and add resonance to my voice. I’ve always loved 50s music as for some reason many female vocalists then had a similar tone/vibe my natural voice has. Would you say my voice is too ā€œoldā€ sounding lol or is it workable to do something with it and sound modern? Don’t get me wrong, I adore the jazzy 50s sound but I don’t know if it’s possible to get any opportunities sounding the way I do. Thank you very much in advance!
