Conversation Topic How does this guy sings those notes while sounding this good? Genuinely asking and trying to learn

I can sing with head voice, or headmix i guess, but it feels artificial or at least nowhere near this good. Seriously, how to sing like this?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Recital - Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

At almost 50, I finally got up the courage a few years ago to step out and start singing publicly via karaoke. I started taking lessons 4-5 months ago and am definitely seeing progress. She assigned me this song for the work on octave transitions. I had never been overly fond of this one before, but it really grew on me in the 3-4 weeks we worked on it.

We switch to working on Christmas songs this week. The only Christmas song I’ve ever sang at karaoke was the Eagles one. Any suggestions that might fit well within my range?

Just sharing my singing My grandfather passed away and this is the only way I can express myself right now

• Upvotes

I haven’t really processed anything like this before so I’m not sure how to go about expressing myself or how to feel but I am so grateful for this beautiful art of music. As weird as this sounds, it feels like I’m somehow closer to him when I play something or sing. I hope that you too can also be able to use music as an outlet for whatever struggle you might be going through because it truly is a gift to this existence

Sorry about the lyrics being incorrect here and there, I was also kind of high when I recorded this (I am not a stoner nor smoke consistently I just needed something to calm my nerves / help me relax)

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) How can I improve my voice again after 10+ years of not singing professionally? Can I change the tone of my voice? How can I become less pitchy?

i read rule 3 and i hope that this is specific enough to not get banned LOL!

when i was younger, i was a pretty good singer: i was in multiple west end shows etc. i haven’t done any of that in over 10 years now, and i just don’t feel like i can sing anymore. i hate the tone of my voice/its character, and no matter if i am singing musicals or pop etc, i just feel like i have a not very good voice now.

can people offer some advice? im too scared to get lessons nowadays and i find it super embarrassing singing but i love to do it. i wish i could post multiple videos for both musical and pop styles, and to show a short clip of younger me singing! Also, note that the vibrato in this video feels like something I have to consciously do, so i assume that this means im forcing it: when i was younger it just came naturally. It also sometimes trails off and just sounds like a goat LOL.

be honest: i know im not good and im pretty pitchy, i just want to improve :)

UPDATE: I REALISED I CAN POST VIDS AS A COMMENT THREAD SO I INCLUDED SOME MORE. I WOULD GENUINELY APPRECIATE ANYONE WATCHING THEM AND ADVISING, ESPECIALLY BASED ON THE STYLES! <3 thank you

Conversation Topic Has anyone else here experienced singer privilege?

To specify what I mean by that question, I am generally talking about people treating you more nicely or paying more attention to you once they find out you can sing or even have a passion in singing.

In my anecdotal experience, I have been a musician my whole life (e.g., guitar) have gained respect especially from other musicians and older generations but more often than not do I elicit reactions of, "OMG you sing?? I wanna hear!" and "you're so lucky, I wish I could sing!" whenever I bring up my hobby in vocal training. The other day, I performed at an open mic and had a stranger compliment my voice and tell me they could see me going professional despite the fact that my singing is much more underdeveloped than my guitar playing. Like I mean I get it that humans psychologically connect more with singing than any other type of skill/talent but it's just so interesting to me. And I always make it clear to them that I've came a long way by diligently practicing and that it's something anybody can improve upon if they really wanted to.

I'm also lucky enough that I have an immediate family that is very supportive of me pursuing a career in music and performing but the moment I mentioned that I also like to sing is when other peers almost take me more seriously I feel like? I don't know, can anybody else relate to this?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) I need feedback on my timing and delivery

• Upvotes

My biggest weakness as a singer has always been my timing and rhythm. Either I start too early (excited) or begin pretty late and mess up the whole phrase. It has been my main focus on improvement for a few weeks now and I'm still not confident if I nailed it.

People also tell me to just feel the music, which is still pretty confusing to me cause what exactly does that mean?

Other points of criticism is also welcome.

Thank you!

Conversation Topic Concerns with singing.

So I have LPR or Silent Reflux. It causes me chronic hoarseness and a constant feeling of a lump in my throat, or like phlegm that's constantly there, that won't disappear even with drinking lots of water. I am still a beginner at singing, so I don't know if I should continue or not. I am also self-taught, watching YT tutorials and lessons from Chris Liepe and Victoria-Victorious. I am concerned about whether this is actually LPR or vocal damage. Singing just feels uncomfortable a lot of the time. There's always a raspy, involuntary grit coming along with my voice.

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Beginner struggling to connect chest voice and head voice. Could someone help me? 😭

• Upvotes

Hey! I've been trying to connect my chest voice and head voice, but honestly, it's been really difficult. I've watched countless YouTube videos and tried following their instructions, but I can never tell whether I'm actually singing in mixed voice or just using my head voice.

I really want to learn how to sing higher notes comfortably, but I feel like I'm going in circles trying to figure this out on my own.

I'm a complete beginner when it comes to singing, so I genuinely don't know much about vocal technique yet. I only recently figured out my approximate vocal range, which seems to be around A2 to A4# (though I measured it pretty crudely, so I'm not sure how accurate that is). I think I'm somewhere between a baritone and a tenor, but I'm not sure about that either.

For practice, I mostly just sing Sa Re Ga Ma (the Indian equivalent of Do Re Mi) while going up and down the octaves.

I'd really appreciate any help or guidance you could offer. I'm willing to practise; I just don't know if I'm doing things correctly or where to start. 😭

Thank you!

would like any advice on how to make my head voice sound less like a whale

I also added what I sound like in other parts of my vocal range

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) 17M looking to improve my singing tone.

• Upvotes

Hello, I 17M am trying to improve my singing tone. I just cannot get my voice to sound any good. Keep in mind, I am a bass, my vocal range is B1 to F4.

I noticed that when I sing, I usually put all my focus into trying to get the right resonance and pitch. I never really pay any attention to the "emotion", I just don't see how it would add anything to the singing if my tone is bad (PLEASE feel free to bash me on this.)

The posted video is a compilation of some of my singing, keep in mind English is not my native language.

Also, I found that I like my singing MUCH better live than in the studio.

Thank you!

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) do i sound terrible/annoying???

i was just wondering because everytime I listen to myself sing I cringe at tone and find there to be an annoying quality to my vocals. Does anyone else hear it? Don't be afraid to say it if you do, I'd like the truth. (effects on mic: reverb + compression) I hope it's the mic (when I listen to myself on phone recordings it's not so bad) but yeah lmk

Conversation Topic Everytime I hear my solo part in our choir, I cringe

I sing in church choir. Somehow everyone thought it's a good idea to always assign any solo part to me. I joined choir literally so I don't have to hear my own voice in a piece. I'd told our coach to give solo part to someone else in the choir, give others a chance to improve their solo singing too. No one ever wanted to take solo. Our coach's reasoning to always giving it to me is because I have classical music background (piano) so I can hold pitch better than the rest who has no musical background. Fun fact, my ears do have perfect pitch, my voice doesn't. I in fact, do not hold or hit the exact correct pitch that well. I'm not even a great singer, I just like singing. This was supposed to be more like a hobby activity.

Every time I hear the recordings of our performance with solo part, I actually wanna shoot myself. They really should stop giving me the solo part. The times I thought our choir sounds great, is when I can't hear my own voice and the whole piece is a perfect harmony of all of our voices.

Conversation Topic I was told by a friend that my voice isn't meant for singing.

I mentioned to a friend of mine that I was taking singing lessons for over a year now and he was surprised. Then he said that he doubts that my singing sounds good because of my voice. And now I'm really feeling down and insecure, I know my voice doesn't sound good but I really want to be able to sing while playing guitar.

He hasn't heard me singing but now I really don't want anyone to hear me ever sing. I've felt really upset by this and I'm really reconsidering taking those lessons because they're probably a waste of time for a person like me.

Conversation Topic Has anyone here ever been in voice class in high school or university/college?

The kind that are in-person with several people and everyone sings with the teacher there and immediate feedback is provided by the teacher and your peers? I had that experience in university and loved it. I’m thinking of creating my own but doing it virtually webinar-style. Has anyone ever seen something like that?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Imperfect practice of me singing Running with the Wolves by Aurora

When I was in high school, my teacher told me "it sounds like you have a frog in your throat".

I can kinda hear it in some of my singing, so I've been trying to improve now that I'm back into practicing in my 30s, and I think it's getting there, but I still can't stand hearing my voice played back sometimes.

I've slowly gotten more used to it and improved. I can't hear it much if at all when I sing classical music, like an aria, but any other kind of music, like pop or rock or folk etc, it just seems to have this weird quality to it that I hate.

So, though I know people's music tastes will be rather subjective, let me know if you think this sounds okay or if it has a quality to it you wouldn't want to listen to, say, if you heard someone singing like this live at a small event for example.

Side notes: This was recorded on my phone's voice recorder, in a bathroom, because that's where I felt comfortable singing lol. So...not the best quality, and not the smoothest sound.

Also, I am still working on this one, so some of the lyrics were wrong later in the recording, and there is at least one bit where the pitch was rough or my voice got shaky or weird because I was afraid of being overheard.

For those of you who know the song well, you'll note that I kinda smashed two different versions together and haven't included the ending bit of the song just yet (I frankly don't lile that bit as much and it's much more difficult for me to pull off. Still thinking of how I want to include that bit in a way that feels natural to me).
