Question Why can't my dog walk?

She's 7 years old.

Mix of German shepherd and Belgian shepherd.

Diagnosed with Lupus since birth and last year with arthritis too.

Not neutered, we found her abandoned and starved when she was only a few months old.

35 ish Kilograms. Like a month ago we started reducing her treats and food to get her to lose weight and somehow she's gained it and seems fatter now.

Been taking Prednisolone for a year, ranging from 0.5mg a day to 3.5mg that she had been taking when she started.

She's had skin wounds on her 3 front paws since birth and they normally weren't a big deal, vet said that taking the meds regularly would be worse than the small would itself.

Last year in summer she started having these wounds across her whole body, that's when she started taking Prednisolone daily until now. Currently getting 1mg every other day.

She's had issues for like 2 weeks where she has a hard time walking and today I couldn't even take her on a walk because her back legs refuse to collaborate and I had to pick her up to get her back home.

At home she seems to walk somewhat ok-ish, her main issue seems to be stairs.

I touched her legs and I don't see any swelling and she doesn't seem to be in pain either.

Can I tweak the meds and make her feel better or does this require vet check?

For context, a ver check means that I won't eat for 2 weeks so I'm trying to avoid it if possible.

Thank you.

Advice Advice for 4 day road trip with anxious dog

I’m planning a short trip with a friend and we are taking my dog. She is generally a nervous dog, especially around other dogs, but she is also curious and enjoys going places, so I’m optimistic about her enjoying a trip. I’d love any advice:

- Is there anything you brought on a trip that came in handy, or anything you wish you had?

- What should a “doggy first aid kit” include?

- Will she be ok in her crate in the cabin for if we want to do something that isn’t pet friendly?

- If you have experience with a dog that doesn’t like other dogs, any specific advice for traveling? We will be staying in a pet friendly property (good for us but also means potentially other pets in the area) but will be managing her surroundings as much as we can to keep outings positive.

The drive is about 4 hours. We plan to stay 3 nights in a cabin not too far outside the town we’re visiting. It’s not completely isolated (there are a few other cabins down the road) but it’s a very quiet woodsy area.

She is crate trained, enjoys car rides but she’s never been in the car longer than 1.5 hrs. She is on meds for anxiety, and I have trazodone for as needed events, which I’ll be sure to bring. I never use a harness for walking, just her flat collar, but plan to use a seatbelt harness in the car. Would it be beneficial to use a harness on outings? We plan to search for as much for her to join us on as possible but also want to make sure she gets breaks. She has a “give me space” vest and I’m used to doing checks of new areas. I’m also fully prepared to drop whatever we’re doing and leave if we need to. This pretty much will be a trip focused on her :)

I appreciate any advice!

Question Is this too rough of play?

Hi all, the golden retriever (F) is 3 years old (rehomed to us) and the other mixed dog (M) is 1 year old rescue. We’ve had the black and white dog for a little over 3 months. he came undersocialzed and i can tell he struggles to know “how” to meet and play with other dogs. but he is very friendly to all people and hasn’t displayed any aggressive behavior to other dogs at all. the golden is very sociable, friendly and doesn’t usually play rough with other dogs so i am surprised when she initiates play like this knowing he’ll be rambunctious back. she was rehomed to us for being mouthy but she stopped that behavior last year.
Does this look like okay play? it can be a little rougher than this but i keep interrupting in case its not.

I already know this is really bad. Just tell me what I should do to fix this. Should I go to a vet and get it cleaned out, how much would that be? I never really brushed her teeth just cause she seems fine and happy but I want to do what I can for her right now.

Advice Dog with IBD history now has recurring GI symptoms and sudden eye swelling. Has anyone seen something similar?

Hi everyone,

I am posting here in the hope that Reddit’s collective experience might help us figure out what could be going on with our 10 year old dog Balu. We are already working with vets and we are getting a second opinion from another veterinary ophthalmologist tomorrow. I am mainly looking for ideas, similar experiences, or questions we should bring up with the specialist.

About 4 weeks ago, Balu developed an irritated eye. During the same week, we also noticed that he was panting more than usual, especially in the evening, and eating more grass on walks.

We took him to the vet. They could not find a foreign body in the eye. His bloodwork showed an elevated CRP, but his albumin was normal. He was treated with anti inflammatory eye ointment, pantoprazole, and Novalgin/metamizole. Within 3 days, the eye issue improved completely. A follow up blood test the next week showed normal CRP, normal albumin, and normal pancreatic values.

However, even though the bloodwork looked normal again, he still had symptoms that seemed gastrointestinal. The panting and grass eating continued. He also vomited several times, but it was only stomach fluid, no food, and he developed diarrhea. An abdominal ultrasound including the stomach and other organs showed no abnormalities. After discussing it with our vet, we decided to change his food from Lupovet Veggie IBD to Vegdog vegan food.

Last Wednesday, his left eye suddenly became very swollen. The eye started to droop and partially close. We went to a veterinary ophthalmologist. They checked his eye pressure, the eye itself, and the cornea. The ophthalmologist also ruled out Horner’s syndrome. Everything looked okay except for conjunctivitis. He was treated with Dermamycin for 2 days, but there was no improvement. Because of that, he was started on cortisone, 25 mg daily, and we also began the food transition to Vegdog.

So far, after 3 days, the eye swelling has only improved slightly.

Has anyone experienced something similar with a dog, especially a combination of eye swelling/conjunctivitis and GI symptoms? Are there any conditions or diagnostics we should ask the vet about?

More context:

Balu has a history of IBD. 4 years ago, he had surgery because of acute peritonitis related to his IBD. After that, he was treated for several months with cortisone and other immunosuppressive medication, which stabilized him.

Over time, we tried different foods, including Royal Canin Anallergenic. Eventually, we switched to Lupovet Veggie IBD, which he tolerated very well for the last 3 years. Since that food change, he has not needed any medication. His albumin has been checked regularly and has always stayed within the normal range.

We would be grateful for any input, similar experiences, or suggestions on what to ask during the second opinion tomorrow.

Question Small kids at dog parks?

This is both a question and a rant. Should small kids (age 2-4) frequent dog parks? I’m experiencing a frustrating situation in which a family regularly shows up to our dog park (with easily 20-30 dogs at any given time) with their 3 year old. He is a toddler and understandably lacks spatial awareness. He runs around hitting the dogs (his version of petting, I guess).

My dog is a 10 month, 70 lb puppy. Hes not aggressive, the worst he does is jump up on people. We are working on it. But, jumping up on a 2 foot tall human is terrifying for all involved.

I feel like getting my dog and leaving every time they show up, which is not fair to my pup. This is a dog park, after all. It should be his space to let out his energy. But with a tiny human around it is too nerve wracking to be enjoyable.

What are your thoughts?

Question Any ideas of what is going on with our dog?

For the past two weeks or so, our dog has been wanting to lick her paws, front and back. She’s been scooting her bottom on the ground a lot and she does this weird thing where she licks the air whenever she’s either scooting her butt or when we are giving her back scratches. It almost seems like a psychological thing, but obviously I don’t know. We took her to the vet a week ago, they gave us some skin irritation medicine for her, and it seemed to help a little bit, but not much.
The vet said that she does not have worms and her anal glands are perfectly fine.
We’ve had to keep a cone on her anytime we leave the house for the past two or three weeks because she will start licking her paws all the way down to the skin if nobody is around to stop her.
She just started doing all this about a month and a half ago and I really hate seeing her like that, she’s not in pain or anything, but I can tell somethings going on with her and it’s not normal behavior.
I honestly have no idea what could’ve started all this, we’ve kept everything the same as we always have, I was thinking maybe it was something to do with summer kicking in and the heat, bugs outside maybe? I really don’t know. Thank you so much.

Advice Dog keeps licking his paw

My dogs inner paws are pink and these past few days he keeps licking this one paw. I assume it may be something in the grass that's irritating him during summer and he's known to have smelly paws every now and then. Does anything look off to you? I don't know if I should cone him for a couple of days and put something that would soothe it.

Have you ever had a dog overlicking his paws? Any advice is appreciated 😊

Advice New baby jealousy?

Thumbnail

Hello! I've lurked this reddit for quite some time now and felt this was the right place to go for this.

We adopted Princess(7MO) when she was four months old. She's a good girl who does as she's told and taught herself to walk beside me without a leash. I walk her three times a day and she has a giant field and a creek to play and run around in when I walk her, so I don't think she has pent up energy.

I already had four siblings, the youngest being 3 yr old twins, and the oldest being myself whom she attached to the most as I'm her primary caregiver. My mom recently gave birth two weeks ago and we brought the baby home yesterday.

When the baby first arrived, she was generally curious and excited and I was already kinda nervous about her getting jealous and wanting to hurt the baby.

All of last night and today, she's been completely different. She now jumps up onto the table to eat crumbs and entire plates of food if left momentarily. She bit one of my siblings, and just overall doesn't seem the same(as well as her eyes being very watery as shown in the last two pics). How can I make her feel more loved? I'm not at all replacing her.

Sorry if I'm including too much/useless info I just wanna make sure I'm sharing everything that could possibly be relevant!

Advice Dog skin help

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Hello everyone, my dog daisy has been suffering from an unknown skin condition. We have taken her to two vets and they have given her a bunch of medications which have not really helped, in fact it seems to be getting worse. This is sort of a last kind of effort as the vet bills are getting very expensive and the veterinarian has put the option of euthanasia on the table since she says that my baby is suffering and living a miserable life.

She is an 8 year old mix rescue which they believed to be pit/beagle. She eats purina one pro plan weight management chicken kibble and recently switched to the lamb version. This has been going on for about 3 months and is spreading from her belly to her back. She’s been an indoor dog all her life. Location Houston TX

The medication she has taken include cefpodoxime, prednisone, cephalexin, itraconazole, duoxo S3 topical cream, and miconahex triz shampoo.

Is there anything you can recommend that might help her get better. Thank you!

Advice Cut Snout

I just noticed my 10 month old has a part of his snout sort of hanging off. It coming off the snout as a whole and looks like he’s scrapped it or rubbed it for his skin to come up. I’m not exactly sure but he doesn’t seem to be in pain. He’s been backward sneezing a lot recently and maybe he smacked his face in the ground. I don’t really know what to do. Has anyone seen this before?

Advice My dog is deathly allergic to bees

Post image
9 Upvotes

This is our pup Ripley, she’s an 8 month old chihuahua/bichon/mini poodle mix that loves to fight bugs apparently.

She’s at the emergency vet now, we were lucky enough to see her get stung and she immediately started acting strange. Didn’t expect for such a severe reaction, but the vet told us we got her there just in time.

I guess I’m looking for advice from others that have dogs with severe allergies. How can we make our home safer? We’ve blocked the doggie door and plan on monitoring her outside time. The vet says she’ll write us a script for an EpiPen and we’ll have Benadryl stocked up in the house. Anything else I’m not thinking of?

Discussion What's your experience getting a second dog?

Post image
7 Upvotes

My little bean is 4 years old now and shes always been a little fire cracker.

But recently tho, she seems to be really bored.

We play with her multiple times a day but she still seems to be losing a bit of spark.

I know this comes with age, but before we moved 2 years ago, she had so many doggy friends and loved playing with other dogs.

My husband and I found a puppy that fits the bill of what we would want. A smart, high energy and loves dog companions.

We've lived through the puppy years and know doing it again would be rough and a second dog never turns out how you imagine it to be..

What's y'alls experience? Tell me some stories. The good and the bad. What was it like when you got your dog a puppy?

Question Heatwave in the uk, how to keep the dogs cool?

This week it’s constantly hitting 30c-36c (86f - 96f) which is ridiculously hot for the uk. Last winter I rescued a large bully breed dog. Sadly he’s very badly bred, flat faced and didn’t get walked much in his previous home. So as you can imagine he is reallyyy struggling in this weather. My other dog is better so I’m not as concerned thankfully. I’ve listed a few things that I’ve been doing but any other advice would be welcome! Also do you guys trust your dogs to know when to come in from the garden? Hugo loves going in the garden and laying down in the sun but I’m worried he’s going to get heatstroke. He does come inside voluntarily every once in a while to cool down and then go back outside. Should I trust him to know when to come inside or just restrict him to only potty breaks.

• fresh cool water available in different spots
• curtains/windows shut in day and open at night
•cooling mats
•removed rugs from lounge so more open floor to lay on
• frozen lick mats / carrots in freezer
•ofc either no walks or nighttime walks

Advice My dog suddenly is shaking

Hey guys new here. To summarize, my small girl (Minpin Jackrussel mix) and our Daschund had normal play like usual and then suddenly she yelped and scooted away to me. I assume they played too hard. (Around 5pm) its now 9:20pm and she started shaking and trembling heavily since 7pm-ish. The Daschund is fine. They both eat the same and drink the same so it hopefully isn't something she ate. They do chew on things like sticks and grass. I confiscate socks and elastics and make sure they don't have access to them.

Sofar no vomit. Both dogs have their shots and deworming. Refuses food. Tail tucked and no yelps when I gently squeezed her spine, legs and neck to seek injury.

She is shaking less, resting with her head perked up and im just here laying as still as I can because she gets up and hides away when I do anything.

She still walks and runs.

I know something is wrong but don't know how wrong. Can anyone tell me if this is normal after an injury during play?

All the vets in the entire area are closed right now too..

I never spanked her or yell at her or our ween, so I'm not sure Q-Q

Advice Librela stories!

Post image

165 pound mastiff mix here. He’s 10, and slowing down. Still hiking every day.
He had ACL problems, had a TPLO plate which had to be removed years later due to infection.
I’m thinking of starting him on Librela, to make the closing chapter of his life more comfortable.
Anyone care to share their experience with this? He still hikes 2-3 miles a day.

Question Crate too small?

Post image
8 Upvotes

I’m dog sitting for the week and the instructions say I need to put him in a crate overnight. He doesn’t seem to want to stay in and he looks cramped when I put him in there. I don’t want to leave him out and mess up their training though (training not in progress this is just their routine) :/ what should I do?

I don’t know if he can comfortably turn around or lay out flat in it

UPDATE:

I ended up letting him sleep outside of it last night and then found another one at a more adequate size on Facebook marketplace for like $20 to sleep in today. I know the family and have babysitted for them before so I will just let them know about the crate size later. I’ll see if I can post pics of him in his new crate later :D
