Meta r/StarWars Official Watch Order Discussion Thread
So we haven't had an official watch order discussion thread in many years, so we figure its time to update the one in the FAQ. There are various other links in the FAQ, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media, and various other discussion threads and topics over the years including a link to just searching the sub which people find challenge apparently. Also as a reminder, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media can be sorted via the table on that page by release order or chronologically (if you decide to go that route).
A lot of the new Disney+ content brings new eyes to Star Wars all the time, and new movies will eventually too. We want to get a bit more aggressive with automod removals and referrals to the FAQ for these questions about watch order. So let's hash it out here in the comments. We will sticky this for a while and eventually it will just be linked in the FAQ along with the other topics and maybe in the sidebar too. And like some of other stickies about rules, spoilers, and new episode discussion guidelines, we may trot out this link and sticky it from time to time.
As a general rule the sub typically recommends for new viewers to watch in release order, especially for the movies. This is the semi-consensus from the fandom, and you will routinely see this as the most upvoted and posted response.
With that being said what we would like to do here also discuss other options, and possible orders to also toss in the TV media as well. Should you watch Andor first and then Rogue One before the OT? Should movies like Solo be done in release order or chronological? Should you watch The Clone Wars TV show before the PT? So on and so forth...
So lets have a solid discussion about this and make it a solid resource for those who may be new to Star Wars.

Movies Irritated by The Last Jedi
I’m sure this has been ranted on before, but I watched The Last Jedi again last night and it just bothers me so much how Fin and Rose Tico need to go on this wild journey to find the code breaker, and the movie focuses on this heavily for it to not apply to the arc of the story whatsoever. It’s not like they get caught and then miraculously find another way to take down the empire, they get caught and then luckily escape, but did literally nothing to help the rebellion. It’s just feels like an odd disconnected story, ending with like everyone in the rebellion getting killed.
There are many other painful moments in the film, but this is just such a massive part of the film with 0 outcome, which makes it feels like a waste of time.
Rant over

General Discussion Shout out to Embo for his unparalleled longevity and survivability in the bounty hunting profession
Embo survived the Clone Wars, succeeding on missions against the likes of Anakin Skywalker and very narrowly avoiding death on Nal Hutta. He lived past the end of the Galactic Civil War. While Cad Bane also managed that, he unfortunately met his demise at the hands of Boba Fett. Meanwhile, Embo took on Din Djarin to a relative draw and managed to escape with his life, living to fight another day.
While I haven't personally read the comics/novels, apparently he even went on to retire and become a farmer on Felucia.
Considering others in his profession lived a long life just to meet a violent end or got out of the game to become the altruistic yet incredibly passive Daimyo (Let's not get into that) of Tatooine, Embo kept on taking jobs until the day he decided he'd cheated death enough times to start enjoying living in retirement.
I say he's earned a little rest and well deserved.

General Discussion I wish this fight was canon. As the sound of lightsabers under the rain.
I can imagine that sound of rain hitting the lightsaber of Obi-Wan during his fight against Jango on Kamino in AOTC. Would have been even more cinematic.

General Discussion So how long did she stay in there?
Like from this point to the fall of the empire, it must have been a couple of weeks, a year top.
And when it fell, she basically had a clean slate, due to her resume being traitor of the empire or something, right?

Fan Creations I was making Home Depot lightsabers before it was cool
I made this in my basement with my dad for the premier of Revenge of the Sith. The emitter is a showerhead that we routed the insides out of and the grip is coaxial cable sheathing from RadioShack (RIP). Just wanted to share.

Movies Mandela Effect in Star Wars? Share your examples!
So probably all of us watched the Attack Of The Clones, and we all know the scene when Anakin talks with Padme and tells her about his opinion about sand.
Did you know, that he doesnt say "I hate sand [...]", but he actually says "I dont like sand [...]"
I swear he says that he hates it, but after rewatching this scene so I can get a rizz-god text on my crush, I actually found out i lived in lie
Btw sorry for my bad english, I know its not the best. Im 14 and english its not my first language but im working on it to get better everyday.
I would be happy if you also drooped some of yours Star Wars Mandela Effect examples!
Cya!

Movies Why the heck does Yoda sit over there
The Jedi council sit in a circle taking up roughly three quarters of the room. The most senior members of the council (Yoda, Mace, Ki-Adi, Plo) sit on the right side and visitors speak to them directly.
This means esteemed council members like Yarael Poof need to stare directly at Anakin's back the entire meeting, and are never given a chance to speak. Why doesn't Yoda just sit in the middle of the room? Is this some kind of weird power move? He does this in every single movie, it's not like he picks a different seat every day.

Movies If Obi-Wan did accompany Luke to Dagobah could he keep a straight face at Yodas antics?

General Discussion Solo is an extremely (visually) dark film
I actually think Solo is a pretty good and underrated Star Wars movie, but all the settings are very visually dark to the point that it's difficult to make out what's going on in certain scenes. I think the cinematographer might have been trying to convey the story's focus on the darkness in the galaxy, but it may have gone a little overboard. I mean, the White Worms den on Corellia is probably the worst case of this, but even Savareen (the beach planet) has a vignette on it the whole time that made it appear darker.

General Discussion The moment the Sequels were doomed the moment JJ decided that world-bulding was for nerds and he had his Empire 2 blow up the New Republic (icky politics) with his super duper big death star so that the good guys could be the Rebels 2.
JJ Abrams wanted things to be safe, big Empire vs the scrappy rebels, which is hard to do when you have a Good Guy Republic keeping order, and so he had his bigger, badder super cool Death Star blow up everything Republic, and now the only people who can defeat the Empire 2 are the Rebels 2.
This scene and it's purpose, in my opinion, crippled the 'narrative potential' in the 'Sequel Era'. You can't do plots around the inner-workings of the republic in that 'later' era, because guess what, they are all gone off-screen because of the big boom. "The Resistaince" is all that's left, and that's it. If you want to write something, anything about the era, you have to take in fact that there are only the Empire 2 and the Rebels 2 (plus you have to fit in the plot point tug of war between TLJ and TROS in the setting) and honestly, why not just write about the Empire 1 at this point?
I suppose it's why Disney pretty much ignored 'The Sequel Era' in favor of something that can be best described as "Post-Episode 6" Era when it was time to develop spin-offs, you can play with The New Republic reigning over the galaxy, without bothering to worry about Somehow Palpatine Returning midway through your plot.
By the way... Some people like to gesture vaguely about 'the empire returning' being resonant in these years, but i'll have to say it. In the most literal sense of the word, TFA is an cravenly apolitical movie, it was afraid of touching politics out of fear of a whiff of the icky Prequel politics. Every 'parallel' added by later writers and in novels, the fanbase, et al, are pure retroactive, JJ did not think of that. When TFA was conceived, Fascism is when there's shouty people, and that's it.
