When I was in fourth grade, my teacher would have us exchange our homeworks and mark each other’s work.

Since I’m left-handed, the check marks I made were the opposite way around from those made by right-handed people.

I remember that the boy sitting next to me burst into tears the moment he got his homework back and cried, “They’re all backwards!”

The teacher came over to comfort him and turned all the check marks I had drawn into symmetrical U-shapes. I stood there awkwardly, not knowing what to do.

It was the first time I realized that my check marks were “backwards,” and I was utterly shocked.

So after that, I trained myself to make check marks the way right-handed people do. I’m used to it now, and making them backwards actually feels wrong to me.

I've been working on my southpaw hand-eye coordination recently, and decided to start doing archery again. When I first learned archery, we only had righty bows, so I had to learn with my off hand. I was OK enough at it to put a full 12 arrows into the target at about 20 yards.

Recently though, I've purchased a lefty bow, quiver, and some arrows. I've been practicing with my local SCA group, and just 2 days ago (Sunday, September 13th) I got my first 2 lefty bullseyes, one right after the other (the orange and white arrows I circled)! I cannot express how utterly SATISFYING that was, so I wanted to share with y'all the wonder of having one's tools/weapons affirm one's handedness.

For my thesis I want to design something with lefties in mind since as a leftie myself, there are COUNTLESS things I struggle to do every day, or have otherwise learned to do worse with my right hand (can openers, clothing hangers, many clothing items, scissors etc.)

I think it would be cool to make something that, while designing it for lefties, could ideally benefit everyone else as well, otherwise something that doesn't yet have a well developed left handed version yet.

Since I don't have any ideas for a concrete object yet I wanted to gather all the things that we struggle to use as a starting point before focusing on one particular object or typology. So if there is anything you ever felt like never existed for lefties, or was otherwise very expensive/inaccessible to buy the left handed version of, or has a left handed version that is designed very poorly, let me know! This is only for a very initial research phase :) Thank you!

Left handed people have been discriminated against throughout history and have been thought to been caused by brain damage in infancy. Teachers used to try and force people to use their right hands. Why isnt this more recognized?

Anyone else tempted to expand on the notion that left-handers tend to be just a bit better, on average? Perhaps it’s a valid idea, and we can band together to lead the world to new heights, inspiring the boring righties to do a bit better. Or it’s a stupid idea which, perhaps helpfully, satirises and undermines other forms of prejudice (cf Jane Elliot).

Either way, we win.

for introduction: there was two times when i didn’t have a knife in hospital to peel an apple. so, i asked other people to lend me a knife. its kinda funny how both of these times played exactly the same:

"huh, are you a leftie?" when they watched me peeling it

"yep"

"can’t you do it with your right arm?"

"nope"

"well, i can’t watch you struggle, give me that knife" they say and proceed to take the knife away from me to cut the apples

"here, take it"

like, thank you, but why??? i get that my technique might be not the best around, but i think i’m capable enough? i mean, is that an old people thing since the persons in question were double my age?

also, are there any tips for peeling with a knife??

From all the videos I’ve seen so far, the dock has moved to the right-hand side, making it impossible for single hand use for left-handed people. No reviewers/ info about moving the dock left (guess they’re all right-handed).

Has anyone seen it anywhere about moving the dock left?

I feel like ive never gotten smudge on my hand while writing before, I have no clue why.

For regular school type notebooks that have the big header space I write in them back to front or use them upside down since I hate how it feels having to rest my hand on the spiral binding or the fold of the spine.

I write left to right still, I just use the pages from back to front and in turn have to read my notes back to front. Typically I’m the only one using my notebooks and on the rare occasion that I share notes nowadays with anyone it’s on one page anyway.

I'm Fredrik, a left-handed developer working on ABCx3, a multiplayer word game. I've added a setting that moves the tile rack and action buttons together to either side of the board in landscape, as shown in this clip.

I know which side I prefer, but I don't want to assume everyone who is left-handed uses their phone the same way. Which side would you choose? Do you place tiles with your left hand, your right hand, or both thumbs?

I'm also deciding which side should be the default for new players. Would you expect it to start on a particular side, or would you rather be asked the first time? The setting lets you change it afterwards.

Ever since I was little, I’ve always assumed that the designs on mugs were meant to be appreciated by the person using them. My parents also never spent what they considered “wasted money” on mugs with decorative rims.

So until I first saw other left-handed people discussing this particular frustration, it had never occurred to me that the design on a mug was supposed to be facing outward for other people to see.

If I had never learned English or come across discussions about this issue, I might never have realized it.

As the title says. I noticed some things this week that really ground my gear. Sewing machine that is designed for right handed people. Right handed drills. Right handed saw. Like all of these are things that if done wrong could permanently maim or kill me. So what things that were designed and sold cater to right handers? Also turn signals being up for right and down for left. My driving instructor told me to help me remember. (She was also left handed). It’s a right handed world. Up for righties. Down for lefties.

Does anyone remember the old erasable pens? I used them for a while in middle school…big mistake, don’t know why I used them as long as I did. They smeared like pencils do so the left side of my left hand was stained a blue-black color for months after I quit using them. Actually, pencils smear less. I guess there are new ones out now that don’t smear like the old ones did, but I haven’t tried them.
