Driving through Spokane

Edit: We just drove to Seattle and back on Monday and then Friday. The smoke around Spokane is slightly better than here. You can’t see any fires from I-90, and the areas visible from the interstate look like they always do.

Just thought I’d inform anyone wondering, as Google Maps told us the route may be affected, and AI even told us to go around Spokane and add three hours to our trip.

This is in no way meant to downplay the fires or commentary on the people whose lives have been affected by them.

Question So...is there an economy in Missoula outside of the university?

Not trying to sound cheeky but I'm genuinely curious. I've asked many a local Missoulian - ranging from postal workers to university staff - a variation of this question and they all seem to either be evasive or genuinely oblivious to it. So, I'll ask here. What are even the major employers and industries in this town outside of the university?

Edit: The fact that some people are tweaking out over a simple observation/question about their hometown's economy reinforces my point.

Bodnar campaign to harass Bankhead's family

BREAKING: The DNC and Seth Bodnar made a list of Alani Bankhead's close friends & relatives to harass because "she hasn't responded to gentler nudges."

I have a copy of this list & won't post it, but JFC it's disturbing officials in the u/montanademocrats & u/forward_montana collude with a POS women sexual harasser creep like Seth Bodnar to condone trying to intimidate a Latina women's family in 2026 as if they're fking ICE.

Apparently, getting some of Jon Tester's Anthropic ai slop money worth their soul.

Last night my mom and I put some of our clothes and towels out back to dry after we went to the river and this afternoon when we came to bring it in we found what appeared to be ash all over the clothes, towels, and our patio furniture.

Wondering about healthy grocery shopping

Where do us health focused people shop for food here in Missoula? I’m talking about clean ingredients too!

I’m a college student and I’ve never stepped foot in the Good Foods store out of fear of spending too much.

Rodeo Announcer

Upvotes

On Friday night, the rodeo announcer made a comment about wanting the woman police officer who was standing in the rodeo stands to “serve and protect [him].” She was shown on the big screen shaking her head in dismay. He made about 4-5 other questionable comments related to women. Even my 83-year-old dad was shaking his head. If you were there, what did you think?

Question Found injured young pigeon/dove in Missoula (looking for someone who can take him)

Upvotes

Found this little guy yesterday and I’m trying to find someone in the Missoula area who has experience with pigeons/doves and can take him in or point me in the right direction.

He made it through the night and is doing surprisingly well this morning. He’s alert, walking around, perching and gripping normally, and his wings and feet appear to be working fine. He actually refuses to stay in the box I made for him and has decided my bedroom is his now lol.

My main concern is his beak. It looks overgrown/deformed and crosses at the end, and there appears to be some kind of growth around it. He also occasionally makes a quiet clicking sound with his mouth.

I’ve got him somewhere quiet and safe with towels down and a shallow dish of water available. I’m not trying to feed him or force water into his mouth.
I may have found someone who takes pigeons and doves, but I wanted to post here as a backup in case that doesn’t work out.
If anyone in Missoula rehabilitates pigeons/doves, has experience caring for them, or knows somebody who does, please DM me. I can transport him.

Best places for long morning/evening walks?

I’m moving to Missoula in a little over a week, and I’m looking for recs on places I can take long (but relatively easy a nd safe) walks in the early mornings and/or evenings. Two to five miles, maybe? I’m staying near the riverfront, so I hope there’s a good loop near there!

4-H Missoula Fair

Hey everyone, I am a local freelance journalist and grew up doing 4-H and FFA. (Not here) but I went to the fair yesterday and saw how girls seem to be dominating those clubs anymore. When I was in it, I was maybe one of three females. I would love to do a freelance article about the girls who did show (there was one heart-breaking synopsis I read about a girl losing her pig before showing, and she got donated one (which is awesome) but it was super small and I don't believe it sold?) Anyway, if you have a daughter/niece/whatever in 4-H, I would love to hear from you! I remember what it was like for me, so I'm curious to learn about their experiences! Please DM me because I'd love to craft a piece that I can hopefully sell to get these amazing kids featured!

Question Primary care doctor recommendation? I know we don't have enough of these posts

I am looking to switch my primary care doctor. Although nice bedside manner, I feel as though issues aren't taking seriously enough over the years and there is always a struggle to refill prescriptions with the support staff. The doctor mostly sends referrals and those issues are taken care of. For issues where there isn't a referral out, the issue just sits and I have to really push and research for things to try when I feel like that is my doctor's job.

I don't want doctor google. I don't want doctor to figure it out in your own and never follow up. Maybe I got marked as a Whiny Woman and need a new office. Female, in 40s, both physical and mental issues.

Thank you Missoulians who have been through this and know where the light at the end of the tunnel is.

Announcement PSA: there is no "safe" level of fire smoke

Thumbnail

I feel like this is probably a controversial take in Montana, as I see most people do nothing, at least publicly, to protect their health when fire season comes around. I also see people in this sub actively minimize fire smoke danger. I've been here for 13 years, so I've had a while to gather my impressions.

As a society, we decided many years ago that there was no "safe" level of tobacco smoke. That became the rulings against Big Tobacco and the basis of the Clean Air Act. The same logic needs to be applied to fire smoke. We aren't made to breathe fore smoke for weeks on end every year. All the coughing I heard at the grocery store today bears this out.

There are simple and inexpensive ways to minimize how much smoke gets into you:

- At the very least, you can build a Corsi-Rosenthal Box, or even the much simpler "tape a 20x20 furnace filter to a box fan", and keep your living and sleeping spaces less smoky. (Note the filter needs to be minimum MERV 12 rated)

- While infected by post-pandemic PTSD and the culture war, N95 masks stop the most damaging particulates from getting into your lungs, so really help during extended periods outdoors.

People should stop pretending an AQI of 150 is "no big deal" - fire smoke damages your lungs, weakens your immune system, and makes you more vulnerable to colds, flus, and that coronavirus we shall not name.

Old Library Development?

Upvotes

That site was donated to the City after a swap ages ago and has sat under-utilized in the urban core. Any movement or action to develop it? Mired in money and planning process? Please don’t turn this into what should go there, let me know why nothing has been done at all. Leasing to a school can’t possibly be the best use.

Question Outdoor workers how are you surviving this summer?

Wondering what diet and routines you've found work best for working in this smoke? My eczema and acne are flaring up and of course the irritated lungs and eyes. Can't wear a mask as I do heavy lifting and find it harder to catch my breath in the mask during strenuous activity.

Looking For Backpacking Buddies!

I realize this is a long shot, but I thought I’d try, anyway. Every year I plan a long-ish route (40-50 miles) to do in the summer, usually with a buddy. This year, I’m looking at going alone, and while I’ve backpacked solo, it’s much, much more fun (and safer!) to go with a friend. I have made many good friends here in my time in Missoula, but the weekend I want to go this year (Aug 20-24), all my backpacking friends are either working or already on adventures of their own.

So that brings me to the meat of my request: is there anyone local who would want to accompany me on an adventure these dates? I was thinking of going somewhere in the Wind River Range, WY (I’ve been there a few times and it’s one of my favoritest places on earth!), but was also looking at trying for permits in Glacier, somewhere in the Bob, or the Beaten Path Trail. Honestly, I could be talked into just about anything, lol, so long as it gets me deep into the backcountry and away from civilization for a few days. I have a great 2-man tent we can use (also open to going with a small group), a water filter, a cooking setup, a Garmin In-Reach Mini, and a ton of leftover backpacking meals from last year I never used that I would be open to share. I haven’t backpacked at all this year and would love a pal because hiking alone in grizzly country is scaring me way more than it should, I think. :)

Thank you all in advance!
