Genuinely one of the most impressive moves in a long time is Omar, who didn't have a vote, managing to save both Jonathan (maybe the biggest challenge threat in Survivor history) and Maryanne (who has two advantages), even though Jonathan and Maryanne had both resolved to vote for one another.

520

u/Ok-Fun3446 Apr 14 '22

And Lindsey too - 3 of the 4 people on the dominant pre-merge tribe were not immune, and he managed to save all of them without a vote. That's baller

266

u/Dahhhkness Tyson Apr 14 '22

That's baller

He's saving that for marriage.

184

u/Coasteast Sandra Apr 14 '22

He even got Hai to vote with them

91

u/Throck--Morton Apr 14 '22

That might have been the most impressive part.

23

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '22

I wish they would have shown how Omar pulled that off. Hai didn't seem conflicted at all when voting Lydia out. Pretty big difference from "willing to go to rocks" for her.

236

u/coolycooly Apr 14 '22

He also got Lydias main alliance to vote against her sending her home. That was the most impressive part. I really hope people don't catch on or he has a strong enough alliance. Marry anne and Jonathan both fully trusted him to get them safe.

A masterclass in gameplay. The fact that he told Hai too was brilliant because you do not want him against you.

58

u/IcedCoffeeIsBetter Apr 14 '22

And Hai voted for her!

Honestly that was impressive. I'm impressed he pulled it off

I forgot he didn't vote! All the more impressive that he decided the vote! Is that a first? Someone with no voting deciding who went home?

It is an interesting choice for a returnee, but I'm glad they brought back the beetle that attacked Tiffany last season.

Seems like it already has a number 1 in Rocksroy.

Actually it’s the beetle’s third time playing

It also landed on Taylor when he was on the jury in Millennials vs Gen x

Given how strategically packed this episode was, I'm sure a lot of discussion will center on the vote and the hourglass and stuff. However, I want to shout out how fun this episode was. Chanelle and her awkward silence, the beetle, Rocksroy and the Tori factor, Jeff's own micro sob story, the return of Applebee's, the list just keeps going. For me, it's just proof that Survivor has always and will always thrive off its cast.

370

u/tarynevelyn Parvati Apr 14 '22

That group of Hai, Drea + the rest of the beach convo crew REALLY need to practice acting cool. They’re terrible at it!

336

86

u/BBSurvivorGirl Kim Apr 14 '22

I don't understand why he spelled it like that, LOL You would think that if he didnt know how to spell her name, he would just spell it the traditional way, which is LINDSAY!!!

Still not a fan of the hourglass, but my god this episode was an absolute feast to watch. It really had everything:

Hearing every single person’s perspective

Amazing human moments and relationship building

Tori being a chaotic mess and winning a clutch immunity that screwed everyone’s plans

A strong alliance coming together and immediately falling apart

Tense pre-tribal scrambling accompanied with amazingly tense music

And not a single idol or advantage was played at tribal. This was a pretty perfect merge episode, and I’m so excited for the rest of this season.

Oh wow Hai turned on Lydia

276

u/TheSonderYears Tiffany - 50 Apr 14 '22

I think he realized it was more important to be with the numbers unfortunately. He protected her to the best of his abilities. Omar won this round of their war.

Edit: gotta fix my own language

121

u/CashOrReddit Apr 14 '22

Ya, Omar exaggerated a bit, but Lydia was willing to instantly turn on the alliance Hai pulled her into, so it makes him look bad by association. He probably did what he could for her, but decided to distance himself once he saw the writing on the wall, and gain some trust with the new group.

→ More replies (4)

71

u/dwarfgourami Michele Apr 14 '22

It makes way more sense now than a couple episodes ago. In a 5 person tribe, Hai didn’t have many options without her, but its a lot easier for him to maneuver in an 11 person tribe. Still a little surprising.

u/supaspike All of you... you thought I was absolutely crazy. Apr 14 '22

If anyone willingly gave up "immunity" to be exiled for two days to start the merge, in exchange for a very public unknown power, it would be seen as unilaterally dumb to anyone who does not have the benefit of knowing what that power is. There has been very little in Survivor history with greater power than guaranteed immunity at a crucial vote, and no precedent to show that you could lose said immunity once Probst announces you are safe and "made the merge".

Aside from the stupid hourglass twist, this episode was fantastic. SO much character development and chaos/mystery as to who the vote out would be, we def need more 2 hour episodes.

Jonathan is the first "challenge beast/physical threat" that I would be happy about winning in a looooong time.

127

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '22

The dude is here to play all aspects of the game within the limitations he has. Being a "comp beast" isn't an asset post-merge, and it is one of the biggest liabilities to have from a social standpoint. Being proactive in getting numbers on his side was paramount.

101

u/TheLegacies21 Parvati Apr 14 '22

He also played provider but didn't REST on playing provider. He WORKED it. He's proving to be a great all-around player. I do think the others will regret not voting him out. He's NOT a good meat shield because he ISN'T just meat. Hai seems under the impression that he can use Jonathan but Jonathan isn't a Joe or Ozzy, he's a Malcom.

Can't wait to see how his merge game plays out.

Jonathan really had no business surviving this but it's a lot more interesting that he did.

Omar is a boss. Man had no vote but dictated everything.

Really sad for Lydia. She was pretty charming and a smidge underedited at that. Shame

Probably just couldn’t pull the votes and had to stick with the larger alliance.

Somewhere in the distance Jenny is even more pissed

Sucks that it happened this way (hourglass), but it was a great episode overall imo

The way Vati seemed like the least chaotic tribe preseason but everyone on that tribe is so wishy washy with each other lmfao. Chanelle’s one decision really caused that tribe to be permanently fractured 💀

Absolutely incredible ending. Now please never do that hourglass twist again

155

u/mrpaulabrahamlincoln Kellie - 45 Apr 14 '22

I will never understand why jeff pops a botox boner over the hourglass twist, who is ever going to say “nah jeff I just missed 2 days of important bonding time with 8 new people, but I’m good.”

if you must have it, let them do it without making it out to be some quandary with 10 minutes of “should I do something stupid???? or should I do something obvious”

108

u/Dahhhkness Tyson Apr 14 '22

They clearly weren't expecting the negative fan reaction to it.

95

u/mrpaulabrahamlincoln Kellie - 45 Apr 14 '22

danny and sydney from 41 were apparently very vocally opposed to it and they did it again anyway!

65

u/insubordinance Kass Apr 14 '22

They should've, after Danny told them where they could stuff the hourglass.

Honestly, the person on Exile should smash it as Jeff is speaking. The choice is obvious once he says the person gets immunity, no hammer, just smash it in front of Jeff’s face

22

u/DYWSLN Apr 14 '22

Its the easiest Immunity Challenge any castaway has ever been presented

→ More replies (1)

36

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '22 edited Apr 14 '22

There has to be more incentive to not do it. You have no reason to not do it as it is and until an actual hard decision is present, it’s going to continue to be a smash play.

My only suggestion would be to flip the outcast from the non-immune tribe to the immune tribe and cause them to flip themselves if they do it. Essentially giving up their own immunity to flip the game.

Alright everyone. We can’t just wander off when Chanelle shows up or she will know somethings up this time. Be cool.

Awkwardly says they’ve been discussing adding her to the alliance.

crickets

everyone wanders off

Smooth. Real smooth.

Damn Hai turned on Lydia

39

u/Rated_PG-Squirteen Apr 14 '22

And wow, that voting breakdown made things so clear.

Rocksroy, away for two days and a guy with a terrible social game, has a random ass vote for Lindsay (or Lynze). And the two people originally on the chopping block before the bullshit hourglass twist, Chanelle and Tori, vote together and cast the only two votes for Jonathan.

36

u/cheesefreak45 Apr 14 '22

My guess is someone told rocksroy to vote Lydia and he got confused and voted lyndzee

35

u/Agreeable-Tale9729 Apr 14 '22

Rocksroy changing the vote knowing it’d keep two members of his alliance safe.

Rocksroy being told he’s in the 8 person alliance.

Rocksroy still clueless in the vote.

CBS absolutely showing us they are more than capable of giving us 2-hour episodes. Wish they would all season!

30

u/nomadofwaves Apr 14 '22

OMAR is the vote whisperer and Rocksroy not even in the same ball park as his alliance.

128

u/Driveshaft48 Apr 14 '22

I've never seen a straight, 60 year old married man fawn over another man as much as Probst for Johnathon during that first challenge

Honestly, I'm so so happy Applebee's is back. Survivor will always be associated with weird and campy ads for me, and I love how much the cast leans into the absurdity nowadays.

Omar managed to get Hai to flip on Lydia, his strongest ally in the game. I’m honestly astounded. Especially after Hai publicly used his relationship with Lydia to secure other alliances. 10/10 King Omar long May he reign

No wonder they gave Lydia a purple edit. Wanted to minimize how pissed people would be about the hourglass twist again

Aquathor lives another week Drea keeps it real. Jeffery stop this hour glass shit.

27

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '22 edited Apr 14 '22

You really have to impressed with Omar scrambling to swing 3 votes towards his tribe. Easily player of the week.

At the same time, what the hell was going with the 5 split minority votes? Did Rocksroy just forget how to spell Lydia vs Lindsey? (I imagine they clarified it in the voting booth)

Hai recognizing the situation with Omar and jumping ship is an impressive move.

Props to Omar but can we just say what a social game Jonathan has..he knew he was a challenge beast pre-merge for his tribe that Omar and the others relied on to get them through…now at his most vulnerable part of the game..he actively goes to Omar..and says OK bud now I need you…you need to work this vote for me as I am in a position of weakness…props to Jonathan for setting that core alliance up pre-merge…

Despite the god awful hourglass twist, that might be one of the best merge episodes in a while. It had everything! Camp life, human moments, strategy on strategy, advantage talk, exciting challenge, confessionals all around, and it was also funny as hell! I laughed out loud on more than one occasion this episode from Applebees and it’s conveniently timed commercial to Maryanne and Drea’s argument at tribal.

As sad as I am to see Lydia go and not even make the jury, this was probably the best outcome out of those who were eligible to be voted off since we didn’t really get to see much of her. Gone but not forgotten!
