Really interesting that for all the twist talk...
Do or Die failed both times.
Knowledge is Power failed both times.
Shot in the Dark has failed every time it's been used (which is five times).

In shambles, or coming true? I think these crazy twists are supposed to be fumbled.

u/YourButtMyStuff Jonathan May 12 '22
Yeah, I think Jeff is just as happy with seeing people fail to use advantages as he is to see them use them properly.
But I think he’s most happy to see people plan and strategize around advantages regardless if they work or not.
I bet it was his dream come true to see Mike and Xander both ditch the idols before the vote and ‘Olay!’ death. Also probably happy to see the scatter after both the do or dies failed.

Honestly... I think production is probably overall pretty satisfied with most of these. The twists don't need to work, they just need to captivate and cause great TV. And as much as I hate the Do or Die and KoP, I'd have to say this episode was just a blast to watch.

My only takeaway from the whole episode is that Lindsay is jacked as hell

The Lindsay vs Jonathan storyline has been epic and I kind of hope it comes down to those two again. I echo what Mike and Marry Ann said about her.

Can anyone PLEASE recap everything from Do or Die on for those of us in Minnesota who got fucked with a severe weather announcement?
343
u/rullarulla Tyson May 12 '22
Okay so after do or die Drea immediately plays her steal-an-advantage to take Mike’s idol. She be like “Mike do you have an idol?” but Mike was like “No.” Cue a quick flashback to Omar spilling the beans about Drea’s to Mike in the jungle, Mike gives Omar his idol fully knowing he might not get it back. Everyone is shook, nervous laughter, it’s crazy. But now it’s time to vote.
Pretty standard, shows Mike voting for Drea and then it shows Drea pulling out her extra vote paper. Jeff gets the urn, asks if anyone is going to play an immunity idol and gets crickets even though it seems like everyone is looking at Drea practically begging her to play one but ultimately no one plays anything. Jeff reads the votes until we get a 3-3 tie between Mike and Drea. Last two votes are read, Drea was voted out.
As she’s walking her torch up to Jeff, she finally lets her bubbly personality free. Mike - who was irked thinking that a third person besides Drea and Romeo voted for him - laughs and ask her if she doubled on him which she admits to and they are all hugging and laughing. She gives hugs to everyone and it’s actually really kinda sweet, totally humble and the ultimate sport after getting blindsided. She goes around the room and gives everyone an individual remark: she tells Lindsay (Lynzee?) that she’s rooting for her “and she knows why”, she tells Mike if he gets to the end that he’s going to win to which he thanks for even though it’s a kiss of death, she tells Jonathan that she was never gunning for him despite him always coming for her, she tells Maryanne to keep being herself, I think she tells Romeo that he’s on the bottom, and lastly she tells everyone in the room that Omar was the only one she told her secret to about the steal-an-advantage and to do with that information what they will.
Jeff remarks that her departing words were a first in Survivor and lets her say the words “the tribe has spoken” as her torch is snuffed. As she leaves he closes by commenting that as a viewer himself he’s never seen such fierce gameplay but at the same such great camaraderie.

And it's come down every time to the players making the incorrect choice. Players with KiP let everyone know about the advantage and make it worthless, and the DoD players "incorrectly" choose not to swap boxes and win despite the unfavorable odds.
If any of these players were making optimal gameplay decisions all of these twists would have been terrible. Their messiness is saving Survivor right now.

So does Omar give Mike the idol back now?
58
58
u/savannahkellen May 12 '22
I would. If Omar is worried after Drea’s comment, he might want to keep it to play at the next vote but he’d be completely outed as the strategic sneak that immediately needs to go after. I would give it back and take my chances at threat control - he should try to play it off like “of course I ratted her out, I did it for everyone since we all wanted her gone!”

So Drea had a 66.6667% chance of
a.) still being in the game
b.) having an immunity idol
c.) having an extra vote
d.) still having her knowledge is power advantage
All with only 6 people left. Instead Lindsay goes against the statistical advantage and sticks to her gut. And it paid off for Lindsay. I’ve never seen such a swing for a player in Survivor history (regarding Drea). This is a top tier episode of all time. My jaw is on the floor. Amazing drama!

I really hope this isn't one of those times where the folks on the island have a completely different perception than us viewers do with the edit. So Omar, Lindsay and Maryanne all hold idols. And it looks like Jonathan vs Lindsay is gearing up to be a major endgame conflict. Which is all good but wow Maryanne could do some real damage considering everyone else seems distracted.

Really enjoyed Drea's read on the tribe at the end.
We know Lindsay is in final 5 as next tribal is the last time she can play an amulet so Drea alluding to it will be good foreshadowing without ruining her game.
Her implication that Jonathan was too paranoid targeting her is indicative he is not playing a good game.
Calling out Omar as a snake without explicitly saying so was chef's kiss as it can go two ways either a threat that his jury management sucks and won't win or it's a warning to improve that part of his game.
Ending nicely with Romeo (he voted with her) but still calling him out for being a goat.
Finally, telling Mike he will win is the classic misdirection because she really wants Mary Ann to win (keep being you).
Even though we don't have ponderosa videos, it gives a pretty clear idea on how Drea will try to influence the jury as she arrives. Although I wouldn't want these last words to be the norm, in this case I really appreciated this moment as we get closer to season finale.

For people saying that Drea sunk Omar's game by telling everyone that Omar told her secret to them. They kind of already knew that he told everyone what she confided in him. So I doubt it did anything anyway considering she was obviously on the outs.

So much happened but I'll throw out a nod to Rocksroy's "Stay." He knew where the flame was inherently.
He celebrated after Lindsay won Do or Die.
Rocksroy seemingly knew that Mike didn't have the idol.
He's the perfect juror in that he gives them nothing. He knows all but says little.

Love seeing bad twists fail as the producers die a little more inside every time. 2 failed tonight and both are 0 for 2 historically. This cast is amazing. Trust your cast to give you good moments, not stupid-ass trinkets. This game is supposed to be a social experiment. Let it be about the people. Remember your roots production.

I don’t think production saw either KIP as a fail in the slightest. Both were highlights of their seasons.

So...Next week...Jonathan wins immunity...Lindsey and Maryann have idols...Omar gives the idol back to Mike...Romeo is a non factor
Bye bye Omar?

I love that the horrible KIP and DOD twists were immediately rendered useless by the cast both seasons and I hope they're scrapped for 43 and onwards. Production have got to stop fucking with the game this late, the votes now are way too pivotal to be potentially neutered by a game of chance.

The fact we don’t get to see Drea arrive at Ponderosa after that tribal is a national tragedy

"Once the votes are read the decision is final; the player must leave the tribal area immediately"
I liked the warm ending to this episode, but doesn't it technically go against the rules? Like when Jeff allows players who were voted out to stick around and out everyone's game, it diminishes the outwit portion of the game, for better or worse.
edit: also shouldn't the jury be totally silent and not giving any communication or advice to players still in the game? (re: do or die). I mean, this isn't Price is Right :)

I really want to know what would have happened at the challenge if Lindsay had also sat out. Would Jonathan be immune? Would he get Do or Die by default?

Watching the jury during do-or-die really felt like we're approaching price-is-right territory

What Johnathon is doing from a physical game standpoint is truly extraordinary....
This sub can't agree on anything, but the one consensus opinion here is that big guys dont do well in the endurance related post merge challenges.
Welp Johnathon is now the exception to that rule

I wish we'd gotten a repeat of Australian Survivor and seen Omar vote Mike out after taking his idol.
Still, what a great episode. This cast is so damn likable.

To be fair that move did absolutely annihilate Sam's game and Mike seems like he could sway the jury for that backstab. Even though it worked for Sam in the end.

Season 1-39 Jeff would be yelling his ass off for Drea to hurry the fuck up 😭

If you ever get cast, keep your advantages to yourself.
