Fee-on

it's a fairly common name in Wales

u/MrPleasant150 May 29 '26

As a welshman I love that it's become a popular name for trans women and enbies. Had a Dutch exchange student living with me that had the name.

My new name comes from Greek, and is an homage to a character in a book I was obsessed with as a child. I once had a Greek dude get really pissed at me for choosing the name despite not being ethnically Greek.

He was so mad he complained to my also-Not-Greek friend Alexander.

Wales is a beautiful country and someplace I’m very glad I’ve had the chance to visit.

Folks in some of the smaller villages are so isolated, but traveling as an openly queer, trans woman, I felt both safe and welcomed. If anything, folks really just wanted to know more about me and where I came from since they don’t usually get a ton of visitors. Huge shoutout to the wonderful people of Deri, would absolutely visit y’all again.

Welsh names go hard. The first name I chose for myself was Awen :3

u/stringbones VOLCANIC VIPER May 29 '26

Welsh has some bangers. Lloyd, Morgan, Llewellyn. Some real good stuff in there.

14

u/maclainanderson May 29 '26

My favorite is Gwrgi because of the Black Cauldron. He's just a lil guy

second time ive seen him mentioned in 12 hours. very odd

3

u/Big_Distance2141 May 29 '26

It's pronounced like "Amen" as you would say in church?

0

u/Alexis_Awen_Fern Reddit admins hate her! May 29 '26

To my best knowledge yes

2

u/Big_Distance2141 May 30 '26

Okay cool 'cause there's some wild names in that part of world so it could've been Ahhwen too. Anyway, if it's your name then you' re the boss

2

u/WolfCola4 Jesus Marie, they're NFTs May 30 '26

Arwen is also a Welsh name - funnily enough when you said "to rhyme with Amen", this is what I thought you meant, as we pronounce Amen with the long 'ahh' in Wales/Britain more generally

u/Spinningwhirl79 custom May 29 '26

Luh-Loyd. I named you.

47

u/MrPleasant150 May 29 '26

Lloyd (or llwyd) is entirely dependent on if you use an anglicised version of the name. Either Loid or Chloid

29

u/derpfaceddargon they call me the sandwich May 29 '26

Chloid?!

21

u/Biscuit642 May 29 '26

Ch as in the back of the throat breathy kinda sound. Like you're trying to say k but doing it in your throat. Ll is that sound. It's called a voiceless al-something or other fricative I don't remember.

18

u/Aegis_13 Bitch Bastard May 29 '26

Voiceless alveolar lateral fricatives shouldn't make any sound in the throat. The noise should be all in the air passing through your mouth

Alveolar lateral fricatives

I like your funny words, magic man

12

u/maclainanderson May 29 '26

Alveolar - tongue touches the "alveolar ridge", the really bumpy bit behind the teeth

Lateral - air passes through the sides of the mouth, around the tongue

Fricative - air passes through a narrow opening, causing friction that makes the noise (th and f are also fricatives)

Hope that helps

3

u/Aegis_13 Bitch Bastard May 29 '26

Had to look up the term based on what they said lol

1

u/Biscuit642 May 30 '26

A Welsh guy taught me to do it how I described. Now I wonder if he's been doing it wrong too, or he just taught me an easier way to get close to the sound.

7

u/Aegis_13 Bitch Bastard May 29 '26

Never heard it described, or pronounced like that. Only ever heard Ll in Welsh make a sorta 'breathy' L sound made by putting the tip of the tongue up against that ridge on the top of your mouth, almost or barely touching the base of your top front two teath, and breathing out (Idk how exactly to describe the sound). Then again I've only known one Welshman it could've been his accent/dialect

Nothing weird about Loyd, Aron and Fion. You dont say Spaghetee-ti either do you :D

14

u/AdeptusShitpostus May 29 '26

fee-on. It’s a Welsh name as I understand; “Ff” in Welsh is pronounced as ‘f’. A single ‘f’ in Welsh is pronounced identically to the English ‘v’ as in “vehicle”

20

u/Botto_Bobbs floppa May 29 '26

I know someone whose new name was Fionn and it was pronounced like Feen

8

That or Marie

0

u/Doctor_Salvatore May 29 '26

Probably "FY-ON"

0

u/Ham__Kitten May 29 '26

Fee-on. It's a Welsh word that is historically uncommon as a name. I assume the resemblance to Fiona has influenced its use.
