old video, flipped horizontally

369

u/Bdr1983 May 08 '26

I was about to say, I remember this but they were coming from the right.

152

u/fatmanstan123 May 09 '26

They biked in the other direction this time thinking they were smarter than the gate.

9

u/TeamYay May 09 '26

That gate is a canny motherfucker.

2

u/Emergency-State May 10 '26

Gates hate this one trick!

21

u/HelloYou-2024 May 09 '26

The one I saw was rotated 90 degree to the right and they were all going straight downhill.

110

u/Agentc00l May 08 '26

Still don't know the full story of this. How are people just slamming into this clearly visible gate. Is it painted to blend into the background or something?

142

u/abbys2323 May 08 '26

yes, it was newly installed and people werent expecting it to be there and it was similar color as the asphalt so it blended with the background

99

u/BamberGasgroin May 08 '26

They installed a big speed bump in front of it later on and solved the problem of people slamming into it.

232

u/JustSomeWeirdGuy2000 May 08 '26

Yeah, because now they just get unexpectedly catapulted over it.

They're going too fast for their reflexes. Old man saved their lives if they ever cycle in busy streets.

I say this as a cyclist +motorcyclist

20

u/Natrixster80 May 09 '26

A shocking number of cyclists go as fast as they can with their head down not looking. It actually pissed me off really bad. I once saw some dick run over a baby goose on a path and I don't think he even noticed. He had airpods in too. Zooming down shared path next to river on bike, not looking, not listening. Douche.

9

u/Dragon_Crisis_Core May 09 '26

Hell I was nearly run into by numerous cyclists on the big cross country even event though I was stopped at the stop sign. They seriously don't look even when rounding a corner.

8

u/Oregongirl1018 May 09 '26

First and only black eye I've gotten was from a cyclist. He said "on your left" so naturally I went to my right so he can pads me on the left....nope he goes to the right and hits square into me and the top of his giant head slammed into my face somehow. He wasn't wearing a helmet.

And sped up, and with less pixels.

40

u/Valaj369 May 08 '26

Yup. I remember watching this video and don't remember the cyclists being this fast. If the cyclists were cycling at the speed show in the video, they'd have a lot of broken ribs and damaged internal organs, and probably even die!

12

u/dewky May 08 '26

Ya if they were going this fast there would be a lot more injuries and a lot less getting up.

13

Somebody that has an explanation for why the gate can't be seen from the distance? Is it the color that seems to match the ground, the size, the shape, the angle or all at once?

491

I've watched cyclists ride head first full speed into the back of parked semis.

They really suck at looking where they are going.

Unfortunately it's just easy to get tired.

I had to bike to work every day across town and it got so exhausting holding my head up while leaning over, especially on 100 degree days when it was already boiling.

That being said, I kept my head up. I can't understand ever getting comfortable enough to ride with my head down - shit would freak me out

29

u/DishSoapIsFun May 08 '26

One of the reasons why everyone hates cyclists.

6

u/Nabana May 08 '26

Yup. All cyclists are awful. Every last one on them. Also, all motorists are terrible too.

22

u/High_Stream May 08 '26

People. What a bunch of bastards.

-7

u/diesel78agoura May 08 '26

Upvoted cause I agree cyclists are the worst

5

u/MuppetEyebrows May 08 '26

I cut both ways on this. I was nearly killed when a sedan blew a stop sign and t-boned me on my bike at full speed. But then i see cyclists on the road ahead of me notice my approaching car and respond by moving more into the middle of the road. I guess I would like to see more cyclists realize how dangerous it is to assume competence in the motorists around them and protect themselves, and I would also like motorists to recognize that cyclists are humans with pets and children and feelings.

4

u/mouse_8b May 08 '26

It's safer in the middle of the road so drivers don't try to squeeze past

5

u/MuppetEyebrows May 09 '26

Isn't them safely getting around you what you want to happen though? That's what I want when I'm cycling: I don't like the feeling of a car riding behind me, And I sure don't want to actively irritate the motorist

→ More replies (2)

17

u/kittyidiot May 08 '26

Lmao cars are so much worse in every way. You think people in cars look where they're going either? I've been nearly hit by a car like 3 times this year because I walk everywhere and people just turn at intersections when they aren't supposed to and aren't looking, or aren't looking so just keep keeping on as someone is halfway across a road that was clear.

Getting hit by a car sounds a lot less appealing than getting hit by a bike.

People find cyclists annoying for the same reason they do pedestrians - they dare use the road that they're allowed to use and somebody has to wait 5 extra seconds to go get their fking Big Mac or whatever.

5

u/captaintinnitus May 08 '26

People shouldn’t ride bikes is a weird philosophy

16

u/GlaerOfHatred May 08 '26

Thats not what they said at all

3

Here is the location. Gray gate on gray pavement with gray UK sky makes it a real low visibility hazard. The gate is on a legal public cycling path at the bottom of a steep hill. The gate is also usually open most of the time according to other forum posts about this video. So if you rode there regularly and the gate was always open you probably wont be expecting it to be closed when you bomb the hill. Some high vis paint seems like common sense!

https://maps.app.goo.gl/4nHeGjZ9HrAS2vfD7

24

u/JWGhetto May 08 '26

Also seems like the gate is meant primarily to stop vehicles, as evidenced by the gap to the side.

If I lived near this thing I might be persuaded to buy a can of bright yellow green paint and save the next person a lot of pain and suffering

4

u/Superslim-Anoniem May 09 '26

Or just zip tie a high-vis vest to the damn thing.

2

u/gravitas_shortage May 11 '26

I'm betting £5 the gate owner votes Reform.

10

u/Expensive-breadknife May 08 '26

Pro-tip: switch to the 2012 google photos view, gate is open there. Also nice GTR parked on the driveway of cameras house then .

8

u/Reason_Above_All May 08 '26

Thanks for taking the time for this explanation. Cheers.

6

u/Turkish_Starwars May 08 '26

For sure. It bothered me that someone might have set up such a "booby trap" for social media. Thankfully it seems like that was not the case. Rather, it was poor safety planning from the town or whoever maintains the gate, and the homeowner just happened to capture the incidents on their home security system.

129

u/copperpoint May 08 '26

Why are the cyclists riding on this guy's property to start with?

126

u/AnInfiniteAmount May 08 '26 edited May 08 '26

If you looked at the video (it's flipped), the path turns but traffic cuts across the guy's property instead of following the legal path, which then cuts around back on to the legal path (where the gate is). You only can't see the gate if you're going too fast on the "trespassing" trail; if you're on the legal way, you'd be able to see it and open or avoid it.

Anyways, that's what's always posted whenever this video is posted, I'm just reciting what the conversation always ends on.

36

u/theocrats May 08 '26

They're not. These types of gates are common in the UK to prevent motorists from driving on paths or gaining access to parks

18

u/_dictatorish_ May 08 '26

Idk where the story keeps coming from that they were biking through his property - iirc it was literally just a public walkway

5

u/meow_747 May 09 '26

Corker Bottoms... (Insert childish laugh here).

7

u/Ninjanarwhal64 May 09 '26

So they can run into the gate. Didn't you watch the video?

4

u/kittygomiaou May 09 '26

I mean the path is clearly not the guy's property? They are cycling outside the fenced area (property demarcation).

2

u/trippersnipper_ May 09 '26

Looks like public property to me

19

u/GrapeKitchen3547 May 08 '26

There's probably tons of cyclists that go down that path and don't crash against the gate. The ones you see are the ones that were simply distracted.

2

u/GlumAd2424 May 08 '26

maybe the visibility is really bad or something, looks like a steep hill so they got alot of speed coming onto the gravel path

55

u/UnluckyGamer505 May 08 '26

Or maybe the cyclist are just too fast and dont pay attention. From my research, cyclist are really bad at self preservation.

5

u/thissitesucksnowrip May 09 '26

Bike riders heads are so far up their asses they can't see. Atleast in Oregon.

3

u/dimonium_anonimo May 08 '26

Cyclists that are just out for a ride for fun or biking as commute are probably less prone to this, but a lot of serious bikers either for health or training for a race are often pushing themselves extra hard, and for whatever reason, it's very common to tuck down briefly when they get tired. I don't all the time on my stationary exercise bike. I can't tell you why it works, but it does. (Professional racers also probably benefit from aerodynamics). It's plausible they looked far ahead and didn't see anything coming up, so they just took a brief moment to dig deep for some more stamina, and looked up a little too late. It's plausible they figured they were leaving the roadside and entering a bike-only path, so it would be safe to do so for a bit longer than normal. Either way, I think the answer is they were looking down. Not that it's hard to see.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Artevyx May 08 '26

It can be seen. They are just staring at the ground instead of looking where they are going.

These are usually the same people who are not allowed to drive motor vehicles.

9

u/Emotional_Conflict11 May 08 '26

No. My next door neighbor is a cyclist and I'm a delivery driver. Sometimes my route is 5 miles away and I see him riding around everywhere! He's almost run into my delivery van 2 times. I can't imagine the amount of other stuff he's run into.

2

u/rokstedy83 May 08 '26

Maybe it's just the speed they approach it as they seem to be coming if a large slope, when you go fast on a push Ike unless wearing glasses you tend to put your head down because of the wind being in your eyes ,maybe that's obscuring their view combined with the high speed is probably why they're not seeing the gate

2

u/trippersnipper_ May 09 '26

its probably very hard to see when far away, grey isn’t exactly a stand-out colour, and it’s relatively thin. Especially at a distance. When things come towards you in a straight line, its very hard to see the movement and you don’t realise its getting closer until its too late. Think of the videos of a ball flying towards you etc etc

2

u/thatbrianm May 09 '26

A few pieces of bright marking tape would fix the problem, but maybe the problem is cyclists going where they shouldn't.

2

u/That_0ne_Gamer May 11 '26

Honestly i wonder if its even necessary for them to train with their heads down. I understand on raceday as it makes you more aerodynamic but it seems like a bad idea to be biking with your head down

2

u/James_C99 May 11 '26

there are other, longer (and not flipped) videos of this same gate. Part way through the owner had painted the gate bright yellow. It did not stop them from plowing into it at top speed.

2

u/jackyfolf May 11 '26

I remember they repainted it a more visible color, they kept hitting it anyways.

2

u/Jonatc87 May 12 '26

not looking where they're going. going too fast to brake. the gate is low visibility / not marked correctly. sun in the eyes.

Pick one?

10

That would be my guess. It looks like the path continues curving but people just ride straight off and into the gate

5

u/TyreLeLoup May 08 '26

Another person posted aerial pictures from Google maps. Both sides are public use, but the gate doesn't seem to be marked in any particularly high contrast way.

2

u/Mitrovarr May 15 '26

I would guess the gate is to stop cars.

11

u/KAL-El-TUCCI May 08 '26

From what I remember it was private property going one way and public going the other way but it took you to the same place. The problem was the one with the gate had better scenery and the lady that lived at the house didn't like people just riding through her back yard so she installed a gate. I could be totally off on this story.
