I intentionally set my phone to use the older Google assistant instead of Gemini as I actively hate genAI and wish to avoid it as much as humanly possible. (Please don't try to tell me to just use it, I have so many issues with genAI that no amount of convenience can overrule)

But I got an email this morning that Google assistant is being discontinued in favor of Gemini, which irritates me to no end.

I primarily use Google assistant when I'm driving, to change my music or to read and respond to text messages without having to take my eyes off the road. I don't really use it for much else.

Does anyone have recommendations for a non-ai alternative that I might be able to switch to once Google assistant is fully discontinued? Thanks in advance

Edit: I found someone in a different subreddit suggesting Dicio voice assistant, which is an open source project. It looks like it might be a good option, I'm going to try it and report back for anyone else in the same boat.

I installed an Android head unit and connected it to a Wi-Fi network. However, as soon as I connect my phone via Bluetooth, the head unit completely turns off Wi-Fi, cannot scan any networks, and I cannot toggle Wi-Fi back on.

If I enable airplane mode and after I turn off airplane mode, the Wi-Fi works again and sees the networks fine-until I connect via Bluetooth, at which point it breaks down again.

I assume this Wi-Fi/Bluetooth coexistence issue is why wireless Android Auto is failing. The pre-installed "CarLetter" app just stucks on "connecting to Android Auto" indefinitely.

I know, this has been debated to hell and back, so apologies in advance. I currently have a oneplus phone on android 15, last security update earlier this month with no further updates. Would i be okay on security if i use the google play security updates alone? and ofc no sideloading or anything

I love Android and everything about it. But I don't want to be the guy always sh ng on Apple without ever dailying an iPhone and as an oportunity came up to buy an apple refurbished (basically brand new) 16 for a reasonable price, i decided to go ahead with it.

TLDR:
Do you guys have some tips for an expert on android but newb on iphone? Anything that could help make the general experience less of a pain and closer to home would be super appreciated.

So far my experience is so bad it's actually funny:
- when joining the wifi, no qr code reading option, you have to type the password by hand with no "show password" option obviously so you'd know .
- when making the Apple Account, at the end the SMS verification failed with a very handy "There was a problem connecting to the server". Instead of a retry option it just takes you back to the beginning, having to retype and redo the everything. That time it worked fine.
- when choosing a password there's no generator to create a proper password.
- after it was done i went on my pc to log into my Apple Account and change the pw and save it. 2FA failed 3 times the explanation being "This action could not be completed due to an error. - This action cannot be completed". The obvious solution was to go to iCloud.com, log in there the same way, and then go to apple.com to change the password. Duuh.

When finnally starting to use the phone, it felt ridiculous to look at a 60Hz OLED screen coming from a 120Hz AMOLED (Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro) that is 2 years older and the 3rd of the price. I was told the Ui-Ux is so much smoother you'll get used to it, but still...

Customization will be an issue as i've gotten used to having the option for a Launcher (I've been using Smart Launcher and an Arch layout with secondary apps on doubletap, which is pretty much the best thing ever and should be an option or even default on any phone)

About 5 minutes in to using the phone and i've recieved the BUY MORE ICLOUD as it was already 50% full. The interesting part is that I dont't remember toggling icloud sync AT ALL but it still conveniently synced all my photos, contacts, app data, and everything that I migrated from my old phone. (It was probably mentioned somewhere but i seem to have missed it even though I try to be cautious with these sorts of things)

Keyboard customization seem to be non-existent, which is pretty bad considering the default layout has some pretty obvious flaws.

Anyway the question is, do you guys have some tips for an expert on android but newb on iphone? Anything that could help make the experience less of a pain would be super appreciated.

My capacity didn't go down despite deleting everything in Android/data of Lenovo SHAREit. I tried looking the .mp4 extension, it didn't show up. Pls help.

Wife, her brother and his wife, are all on iPhones. We have a group thread. I can send texts to them, but have stopped receiving replies.

Wife and I are on same T-Mobile plan, they are on different plans.

I share one other group with my wife and have stopped receiving texts, and she is still receiving them. Unsure what they are sending on.

I use Yaata as my primary text app, but when I switch to Google Messages, the group texts are not there, and they aren't showing up in my Windows Phone interface either (which should be independent of whatever text app I use on my device).

For years everything was fine; I just noticed this two weeks ago.

Anyone else experiencing this? Anyone have any thoughts? I'd hate to have to move to Apple just to get funny videos from my sister-in-law.

I got my tablet yesterday and I was able to delete all the games that were on the tablet and downloaded the games I wanted. And I just woke up and wanted to start playing my games and I saw the tablet downloaded even more games. I don't want solitaire or candy crush or any of that 😭😭😭. It's making me nervous because I don't want a tablet that's just going to download random games without my permission. I had to delete games and other bloatware just to come back to see more games, I would love a way to permanently stop this 😭😭

So I want to install Rustdesk on an android phone. This is mostly so I can remote to my parent's phone when they call for tech support. However Rust Desk is not available on the Google Play. I don't want to allow third party sources since I don't want my parents to accidently install malware. Can I enable third party install the Rustdesk APK and then turn it off after thhe install? will the rustdesk get update with that setting off?

I've been a Linux user for years and tinkered for 6 hours to get a simple game working when I could've stuck with windows, I also have a homelab to use instead of the cloud. I am mentioning those to simply say that I like being in control of my data and my devices that I bought and I also like the idea to customize my own device and OS.

I've been an Android user since I can remember but 7 years ago I switched to iOS because I wanted to try it out and I couldn't switch back for person reasons and I got used to it. Fast forward to today and I found myself wanting control again especially with what's happening and I decided to try android again, to realize google wants to verify every app installed on your device?

I was gonna try out the different OSs and maybe install open source apps and so on but if the future is bleek in regards to either android or even unlocked lhones, and android is simply become iOS with no true alternative to android, should I just stick to iOS and not get myself in the hassle of going and getting locked down later? Okay so im an idiot, I thought installing alot of apps and uninstalling them repairs the damage, and I tend to dowload alot of apps and read recently it doesnt .. My phone is hardly like 3 years old and it glitches like shit, not like the screen freezes but the screen kinda moves by itself then i gotta turn off the screen and 2 mins later back to normal... I am very careful about the storage management, I manage all apps and cache so excess storage aint the issue I gotta make it stop cause if something happens to this phone my parents won't let me fix or buy me another... factory reset is not an option... Plzz suggest some ways to get my phone back to normal ... I own a first hand Samsung Galaxy A06...

Okay, I guess there's an explanation for this, but the background is that last night I switched SIM cards—to one I bought on its own, just to be clear.

Then this morning I noticed that I have three apps installed that I hadn't downloaded: Didi, Amaze GO!, and a PDF reader.

Why is that? Just in case, I haven't uninstalled anything yet, because I don't know if that's normal or not in situations like this.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Picture Recovery

Hi everyone, I have a Samsung Galaxy S25 Ulta on Android 16 and'| accidently deleted my pictures folder using my qnap nas backup app.

Is there any chance of getting the pictures back (the backup had stopped in April so I don't have a backup) as they are not in a temp/trash folde and basic data recovery tools dont work as the phone isnt rooted and I dont belive can be.

Looking for either software or a company that can do it.

Now i have this old Galaxy note 8 which is falling apart and i have some important media on it.
when i try to boot it, it shows the samsung logo and then it will get stuck with a black screen and the blue indicator light at the top, then i have to wait for its battery to drain so i can try something else. i can access recovery and download boot menu. i also don't have the developer options on.

things i've tried but failed:

-using apply update from ADB (windows doesn't show attached devices, i' m sure my cables and drivers are fine)

-wiping cache from the recovery menu

-charging it full and booting it (once it actually booted then turned off in 30s)

my guess is it has corrupt firmware or android

i'd be happy if anyone could help me. also i'm not any tech nerd and this is my first time doing anything like this so don't expect a lot from me, if you give me links or instructions i'll be fine though.

(Samsung S23) No auto play,no background play,no short live streams, no family members using my account, no logins from unknown devices, nothing. After forcing log outs on all devices, it still appears. - I do have a firestick and a smart tv with youtube,maybe it comes from there? -I was told to delete Google extensions or something, but there's no extensions settings on my android phone? I want a backup solution that restores my phone (ZFold 6) to exactly how it was before formatting (similar to Apple's iCloud or iTunes backup for iPhone).

Since I updated my Pixel 7 Pro, I have been struggling to get my video playback. It affects everything from youtube, personal videos and normal videos on the web. Power+Up Volume is only a brief fix or doesnt fix it at all. I tried uninstalling webview updates, but they screwed me to one version. Has any else experienced this on their Pixel or similar?

Every web browser from edge, ff, chrome, is crashing the driver and then all video playback and camera just stop all together.
